The characters and their tropes appearing in the video game ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil'' and in its prequels and sequels.

!!Chris Redfield
[[quoteright:300:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Chris-RE6-Resize_6315.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:300:Chris in ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil6'' (2012)]]
-->'Voiced by: RogerCraigSmith (2009 to present)
-->''"There's one thing I do know: I have a job to do, and I'm gonna see it through."''

The first male protagonist of the series, appearing in [[VideoGame/ResidentEvil the first game]], ''[[VideoGame/ResidentEvilCodeVeronica Code Veronica]]'', the ''[[VideoGame/ResidentEvilUmbrellaChronicles End of Umbrella]]'' scenario, ''[[VideoGame/ResidentEvilRevelations Revelations]]'', ''[[VideoGame/ResidentEvil5 RE5]]'', and ''[[VideoGame/ResidentEvil6 RE6]]''. He was a member of STARS Alpha team, and like many of the protagonists, has made a vow to stop bio-weapon experiments and bring down Umbrella. He currently serves as a top agent for the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance (BSAA), an NGO he co-founded that acts to disrupt and quell acts of bioterrorism worldwide. Despite the series having no 'official' main protagonist, Chris is generally assumed to be it, since he's TheRival of BigBad Wesker.

* AFatherToHisMen: His subordinates in the BSAA have the utmost respect for him, and Chris likewise cares for the men under his command. [[spoiler: The trauma from seeing his entire squad in Eastern Europe turned into B.O.W.s was enough to turn Chris into an amnesiac, alcoholic wreck for six months.]]
* ArtisticLicenseMilitary: In the original ''RE'' and ''RE:CV'', Chris is ex-Air Force at the age of 25. He's received flight training, since he can handle the jet he flies in ''CV'', which means he would've had to have been an Air Force Academy grad and an officer in the ranks. Somehow, he's been kicked out by the age of 23 due to some ill-defined incident, yet without a dishonorable discharge.
* {{Badass}}: [[TookALevelInBadass Goes from]] surviving the events of [[VideoGame/ResidentEvil the first game]] to [[VideoGame/ResidentEvilCodeVeronica defeating Alexia Ashford when she goes]] OneWingedAngel with the T-Veronica Virus; and then later [[VideoGame/ResidentEvil5 punching boulders]] as well as [[spoiler:stopping a [[TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt bio-weapon fueled apocalypse]] started by [[BigBad Wesker]]... by fighting him to the death in a volcano.]]
** [[MakesSenseInContext The boulder was twice Chris's height and refused to move until Chris punched it out of its rut]].
* BigBrotherInstinct: During ''Code Veronica''.
** {{Big Damn Heroes}}: Likewise.
* BigBrotherMentor: He taught Claire how to use weapons.
* BrownEyes
** Though stated as brown on his ID in ''[[VideoGame/ResidentEvil5 RE5]]'', the data sheet is already unreliable due to getting his height wrong from previously established games. In other games, most notably Code Veronica, his eyes are blue (like his sister's) on both official artwork and in-game. Interestingly, if his eyes are brown he is the only one of the four major protagonists not to have blue eyes, if they are blue all four protagonists have blue eyes.
* ChekhovsGunman: Is this to his sister, Claire, as he taught her how to defend herself.
* ContinuityNod: In ''5'', he gets Hunk's Neckbreaker from ''4''. Josh similarly seems to have adopted many moves found in Leon from ''4'''s Mercenaries.
* ColourCodedCharacters: Although it varies in shade, Chris is invariably dressed in some form of hunter green through every game.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: Up to and including ''punching a multi-ton boulder out of the way'' during the FinalBoss fight of 5.
** Some fans joke that the extra muscle mass he sports in ''5'' could only have come from ingesting one of the viruses if not from this trope.
* CoolShades: The alternate outfits.
* DeadpanSnarker: Particularly in ''Resident Evil 5''.
* [[spoiler:DeathSeeker]]:Has this mindset throughout a lot of parts of ''Resident Evil 6''. Look at how he charges into danger and [[spoiler:tells Jake that he killed Jake's father, Albert Wesker, without mentioning why or how evil Wesker was. Even when Jake points a gun in his face, Chris seems resigned to a possible fate of being killed.]]
* {{Determinator}}: Chris does not give up, especially when against [[ArchEnemy Albert Wesker]]... [[spoiler:[[{{SubvertedTrope}} although by Resident Evil 6 enough things have happened to him that one tragedy pushes him to]]]] [[DrowningMySorrows drown his sorrows.]]
* TheGunslinger
* HiddenDepths: One of the easter eggs early in ''Resident Evil 5'' indicates that he disapproves of capitalism and isn't all that patriotic. Sadly, this is never referenced again.
** One of the ending screens in Code Veronica also seems to imply he likes to fish.
* {{Hunk}}: He gains nearly 40 pounds of muscle between ''End of Umbrella'' (2003) and ''Revelations''(2005). It would make more sense if it had been immediately after Code Veronica, or after [[spoiler: losing Jill]], but it wasn't.
* JackOfAllStats: In ''The Mercenaries'' mini-games where he packs balanced weapon-sets, impressive health and decent [[GoodOldFisticuffs punching]] and NeckSnap melee attacks with good crowd control capabilities.
* TheJuggernaut: In ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil6'', especially if the environment is right. He can vault right over alleys and barricades and barely slow down to lay quick and brutal beatdowns on stragglers in the way.
* KnightInSourArmor: Due to the numerous amounts of biological experiments that eventually wind up in the hands of terrorists, Chris often wonders if fighting is even worth it. This gets the best of him prior to ''Resident Evil 6'', [[spoiler: when a lot of men under his command die during a mission and he lets the "sour" overcome the "knight", diving into a drunken sorrow.]]
* MarriedToTheJob: He comes off like this in ''Revelations''. He's partnered with Jessica, who's [[FridgeBrilliance routinely dressed much more attractively than the mission demands]] and who does everything up to and including throwing herself at him, and Chris doesn't seem to notice. Parker seems to think it has something to do with Jill, but implications are ambiguous.
* MeaningfulName: Redfield is also the name of an American company that manufactures high-quality rifle scopes and binoculars. Chris was the best marksman in the STARS unit.
* MrFanservice: Chris's Warrior costume in ''5'' certainly shows a lot of skin, not to mention the GameMod for the PC that makes him completely shirtless. His samurai outfit in ''RE6'' leaves him relatively uncovered as well.
** Since he muscled up in ''Resident Evil 5'', Chris has gotten an absurdly large gay fan following, to the point where one could be forgiven for wondering if "{{bara}}" was a motivating factor behind his character design.
* PermaStubble: In ''5'' and ''6''.
* PlatonicLifePartners[=/=]BattleCouple: With Jill. Which one you get depends entirely on whether you take several moments as LikeBrotherAndSister or as ShipTease.
* PromotionToParent: For Claire. Particularly ''Resident Evil: The Book'', a rare tie-in novel published via a mail-order offer around the same time ''Resident Evil 2'' was released, reveals that the Redfield parents died in a freak accident when Claire was only 14.
* TheProtagonist: Mostly assumed by default due to being the opposing force of BigBad Wesker.
* RatedMForManly
* TheRival: Chris and Wesker have a relationship like this, mixed with being each other's ArchEnemy.
* SecretCharacter: In ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil2'''s Extreme Battle Mode.
* ShipTease: In the first big trailer of ''VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcom3'', Chris does a DivingSave to catch a falling [[VideoGame/{{Darkstalkers}} Morrigan]]. Granted, she had just been stunned by IronMan, but the fans didn't let it slide. Morrigan is later shown wrapping her hands lovingly around Chris in the game's opening movie.
* SiblingYinYang: While Chris is a serious and dutiful soldier, his younger sister Claire is a playful and snarky civilian. What they do have in common is hotheaded recklessness and a tenancy to get themselves in way over their heads.
* SmokingIsCool: In the intro for the first game, Chris's live-action actor takes a drag off a cigarette. This [[{{Bowdlerized}} was]] [[NoSmoking removed]] in the American version, because in 1996, it was illegal to portray smoking in any work that was marketed specifically to children, and the idea of an M-rated video game didn't exist quite yet.
* [[spoiler: SoleSurvivor: By the end of his campaign in Resident Evil 6, he is the only one left alive in his squad.]]
* TheBigGuy, though he has element of TheHero
* TookALevelInJerkass: In the beginning of his and Piers' campaign in Resident Evil 6. He [[TookALevelInKindness gets better]].
* TrueCompanions: With Jill, Sheva and Piers.
* UltimateShowdownOfUltimateDestiny: [[{{In-Universe}} He's a character in]] ''MarvelVsCapcom3''. Interestingly, his "rival" within the trailers is ''[[Comicbook/IncredibleHulk The friggin' HULK]]''.
** In the trailer for ''UltimateMarvelVsCapcom3'', he and [[VideoGame/DarkStalkers Felicia]] are put up against [[EldritchAbomination Shuma-Gorath]]. Chris's entire role in those games is a guy who punches way above his weight.
* WrestlerInAllOfUs

!!Jill Valentine
[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/JillArt_4732.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:300:Jill in ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil5'' (2009)]]
-->'Voiced by: Patrica Ja Lee (2007 to 2012), and MichelleRuff (2012)
-->''"You want S.T.A.R.S.? I'll give you S.T.A.R.S."''

The first female protagonist of the series, appears in [[VideoGame/ResidentEvil the first game]], [[VideoGame/ResidentEvil3Nemesis Resident Evil 3]], the ''[[VideoGame/ResidentEvilTheUmbrellaChronicles End of Umbrella]]'' scenario, ''[[VideoGame/ResidentEvilRevelations Revelations]]'', and the ''[[VideoGame/ResidentEvil5 RE5 DLCs ''Desperate Escape'' and ''Lost in Nightmares'']]. Originally a member of S.T.A.R.S. Alpha Team, she also co-founded the BSAA and was directly involved in the downfall of Umbrella. Serious and dedicated, she shares a strong bond with her partner, Chris.

* ActionGirl: [[spoiler:Is a DarkActionGirl while under Wesker's control in ''5''.]]
* [[spoiler:AndIMustScream: Her ordeal for three years leading up to ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil5''.]]
* ArtisticLicenseMilitary: One of the most notorious errors in the entire series is that Jill is listed in the manual for ''Nemesis'' as ex-Delta Force at the age of 23. Delta is a secretive anti-terrorist unit in the U.S. Army that recruits its combat personnel from the Green Berets and Army Rangers, neither of which admit women to their ranks at the time of writing (much less in 1998). Even if one assumes that women can be Berets or Rangers in the ''RE''-verse, or that Jill was in the intelligence-gathering "Funny Platoon," there's no way that she could've risen that quickly through the ranks. Later games dodge this by simply listing Jill's skills and abilities without going into which branch of the military she was trained in.
* AuthorAppeal: ShinjiMikami's acknowledged that Jill is his favorite character, which explains her widespread appearances in other games.
* BackToBackBadasses: With Josh in "Desperate Escape".
* BeMyValentine
* [[spoiler:BrainwashedAndCrazy: In ''Resident Evil 5''.]]
* ChekhovsGunman Her exposure to the T-virus back in Raccoon City has left her with a rare strain of antibodies which Wesker uses for his Uroboros research.
* ColourCodedCharacters: Hers has slightly more variance than Chris, but it's still there. She's consistently dressed in cadet blue through the earlier games, but it gives way to a darker indigo-blue as time goes on.
* {{Determinator}}: She's the irresistible force to Nemesis's immovable object.
** And again in [=RE5=], [[spoiler: where she is still resisting mind control years down the road.]]
** In ''Revelations'', her reaction when confronted with a giant monster [[spoiler:that's big enough to be eating the front of an ocean liner she happens to be standing on]] is to say, in a relatively calm voice, "We can do this, Chris."
* {{Deuteragonist}}: Of ''[=RE1=]''. Shares the role of deuteragonist of the entire series with Leon.
* [[spoiler:TheDragon: To Wesker in ''5'', albeit [[BrainwashedAndCrazy not of her own volition]].]]
* FragileSpeedster: In the first game, she has less health than Chris, but was faster than him. She is also this type of character in ''The Mercenaries'' mini-games, typically packing low power [[MoreDakka rapid fire]] weapons with powerful [[KickChick kicking attacks]], MurderousThighs and low vitality.
* HeyItsThatVoice: In her recent appearances, she's voiced by [[PowerRangersTurbo Cassie]] [[PowerRangersInSpace Chan]].
** In ''Operation Raccoon City'', she's [[Manga/{{Bleach}} Rukia Kuchiki]] and [[VideoGame/StreetFighterIV Crimson Viper]].
* HiddenDepths: As shown in "Lost in Nightmares", she's quite the accomplished pianist, playing a superb rendition of "Midnight Sonata" after an extended period without practice. What's perhaps more amazing is that she sightereads the entire thing.
* IcyBlueEyes: Icy and piercing.
* TheImmune: By [=RE5=], Jill is basically a walking sack of antibodies. [[spoiler:Whatever Carlos injected her with in [=RE3=] has given her complete immunity to the T-Virus and all derivatives thereof, which made her useless to Wesker as a test subject. She further stacks the deck by, in ''Revelations'', injecting an experimental T-Abyss vaccine.]]
* TheLancer to Chris, though she is also a hero in her own right.
* InSeriesNickname[=/=]AscendedMeme: ''Umbrella Chronicles'' states that, yes, she ''did'' have the nickname "The Master of Unlocking" at the RPD.
* KickChick: To contrast Chris, her physicals are usually straight kicks.
** SheFu: Lots of these too.
* LockedIntoStrangeness: In ''5'', she's gone blonde, and it's ''not'' because of hair dye. What else, she's pale.
* MagicSkirt: Despite her RE 3 outfit making an appearance half the time she does, its pretty hard to see what shes got underneath. At least the original game couldn't render that.
* MasterOfUnlocking: The trope-namer.
* NamesTheSame: Music-wise, her [[VideoGame/ResidentEvil5 boss theme]], '''Sad But True''', is also the name of songs by Metallica and Orbital.
* NiceHat: Her BSAA uniform includes a blue baseball cap. Her STARS uniform had a blue beret.
* [[spoiler:NotQuiteDead]]
* [[spoiler:PeoplePuppets]]
* PlatonicLifePartners[=/=]BattleCouple: With Chris. Which one you get depends entirely on whether you take several moments as LikeBrotherAndSister or as ShipTease.
* [[spoiler:RogueProtagonist: In ''5'' due to being under Wesker's control.]]
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Despite being easily the most stoic of the four protagonists, she cares a lot about her comrades.
* StatuesqueStunner: Not originally, [[{{Retcon}} but according to]] ''5'', Jill stands at 5'8" (her bio in the [=REmake=] listed her as 5'5").
** Debatable, as the RE5 profiles in general are not congruous with the rest of the series and may be non-canon.
* UltimateShowdownOfUltimateDestiny: [[{{In-Universe}} She's a character in]] ''VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcom2'' and ''MarvelVsCapcom3'', albeit with a different control scheme in each game.
* VictoriasSecretCompartment: She can carry a lot more than Chris or Carlos, even if she's just wearing a T-Shirt and shoulder pads or a tube top and a skirt.
* WhatMeasureIsANonHuman: She expresses anger at Nicholai killing someone who was bitten, who hadn't turned into a zombie yet.

!!Leon Scott Kennedy
[[quoteright:291:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/LeonArt_3093.png]]
[[caption-width-right:291:Leon in ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil6'' (2012)]]
-->'Voiced by: Paul Mercier (2004 to 2012) and MatthewMercer (2012)
-->''"I'm gonna scrub this virus from the face of the earth!"''

Introduced in ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil2''. A rookie police officer, who unfortunately was caught in the Raccoon City outbreak ''on his first day on the job''. He later returned in the ''[[VideoGame/ResidentEvilTheDarksideChronicles Operation Javier]]'' scenario, ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil4'', ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil6'', and the non-canon ''[[VideoGame/ResidentEvilGaiden Gaiden]]''. He is also the protagonist of the 3D animation movies ''[[Film/ResidentEvilDegeneration Degeneration]]'' and ''[[Film/ResidentEvilDamnation Damnation]]'', which take place between his appearances in 4 and 6. Like Chris, he has made a vow to rid the world of viral weapons. An good-hearted man with a strong sense of justice, he currently is employed as a federal agent of the United States government and answers directly to the president.

* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: After losing Ada once, this seems to have become a principle for him. Matthew Mercer explained it in an interview as "Even if a situation seems very dangerous and stupid and a total trap, if there’s a woman who needs help he can’t turn that down [...] And in the end of it he’ll feel better about himself knowing he went through the motions on the off chance whoever it was really needed help.”
* AnOfferYouCantRefuse: His epilogue in RE3 states that following the events of VideoGame/ResidentEvil2, Leon and Sherry were captured by the US government. They subsequently forced Leon, whose experience was highly sought after, into service as a special agent using Sherry's life as leverage. This is re-iterated in Darkside Chronicles.
* {{Badass}}: Situations that would kill most people are startlingly routine for him.
** BadassInANiceSuit: In the PS2 port and onwards, [[http://smhspanthers.k12tn.net/web_student_projects/Matt%27s_css_page/bamboo%283%29/images/Leon_and_Ashley_Alternate_Costumes.gif his second alternate costume is this]], complete with a NiceHat ''and'' a ScarfOfAsskicking. He even has a special reload animation when he wears the costume while equipped with the Chicago Typewriter. His pose in the status menu also changes.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Towards Sherry. Even when she's a fully trained government agent and a {{Badass}} in her own right, he still tries to protect her, shielding her so she will land on top of him when they fall off a fence and expressing hopes that her partner/protectee, Jake, will look after her.
* {{Biseinen}}: He might just fall under this. While he's not very effeminate (''just look at his muscles''), Leon is much more of a pretty-boy than any of the other male protagonists, particularly with the steadily-increasing length of his hair. Other characters seem to notice, as one of the Policia in the beginning of 4 asks if he "forgot his makeup", and Leon himself Lampshades it in Damnation when he's nearly stabbed in the face by a pair of pruning shears and retorts with "Do I look like I need a pruning"?
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: In one nightmare-inducing scene.
* BodyguardCrush: All the girls he ends up protecting develop a crush on him, with the exception of Sherry, who's a child.
* CaptainCrash: There's a joke making the rounds after ''Resident Evil 6'' that for all Leon's talents, he can't drive. The only vehicle he's ever been in that did not crash or get destroyed shortly thereafter is the jetski at the end of ''RE4'', and at the start of ''RE6'', he gets behind the wheel of a police car and rolls it maybe thirty seconds later.
** Coincidentally, every time he crashes a vehicle there are zombies inside trying to eat him. Except for the jet ski, which did not crash.
* ChickMagnet: So far, the one with most LoveInterests in the series: Ada, Angela, Ashley, and Manuela all have a thing for him (not to mention Helena and Claire's fondness for him). Doesn't qualify for UnwantedHarem, because he does seem to like Ada and Angela back.
* ColourCodedCharacters: Averted hard. He's the only major character who doesn't show a distinct color preferece. (In order: dark blue, army green, brown, black, army green, and black/dark blue), although they do all take on the theme of camouflage/outdoor clothing and most include some kind of leather jacket either in the main outfit or in unlockable outfits. Fandom will sometimes make his color navy blue, but this is far from official.
* CombatPragmatist: In ''Resident Evil 6'', he comes off the most level-headed of the survivors.
* CrazyPrepared: In VideoGame/ResidentEvil4, he only goes to the village to investigate and ask questions, yet he brings with him a pistol, knife, attache case, flashlight, radio, binoculars, a tracking device and a ''grappling hook''. As well as, presumably, gum. Though he was investigating a group that had kidnapped the President's daughter, so he had pretty good reason to expect trouble.
* DatingCatwoman: Although their relationship is even defined in files as "It's Complicated," he and Ada certainly qualify for this.
* DeadpanSnarker: His lines in ''4'' are full of this, but it's severely dialed back in ''[[Film/ResidentEvilDegeneration Degeneration]]''. ''[[Film/ResidentEvilDamnation Damnation]]'' ramps it back up to full force, and ''6'' seems to find a balance between the two.
* {{Determinator}}: He goes through ''Resident Evil 2'' with a bullet in his shoulder, ''Resident Evil 4'' with a Plaga growing inside him, and ''Resident Evil 6'' as a fugitive from the US government. In ''Resident Evil 4'' his tenacity is reflected in a note left by the infected villagers, something to the effect of: "If we don't stop him now, he'll kill us all!"
* {{Deuteragonist}}: Shares the role of deuteragonist of the entire series with Jill.
* DistractedByTheSexy: With Ada, see [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxqFgSB4UvM&playnext=1&list=PL6C92C52DBD58876B here]] and just follow his line of sight.
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: Has been known to do this to some players.
* EveryoneLovesBlondes: Blonde hair, and a [[HaremHero harem of ladies]] to boot.
* FindTheCure: He spends the majority of ''4'' infected with a Plaga [[spoiler: along with Ashley]], and part of his mission becomes a race to get rid of the parasite before it matures and takes control of his body permanently.
* GangstaStyle: One of his bonus costumes in ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil2'' is a thug outfit, and while wearing it Leon holds any of the handguns this way. It even affects the way he shoots - bullets fire faster, but he generally shoots lower.
* GenreSavvy: His expertise in ''Degeneration'' can basically be summed up as, "I've been in these kinds of games before, I know what I'm talking about." It's much the same situation in ''Damnation.'' As of RE6, this single fact has landed him in a pretty high government position, along with Hunnigan.
* HeroicBSOD: [[spoiler:when Chris tells him Ada is dead]], brief but very noticeable.
* TheGunslinger: In ''6'', he's able to dual-wield his pistols, giving him the fastest and most effective quick-shot.
* IcyBlueEyes: Another example of icy and piercing, but since they're [[GrayEyes blue-gray]], some of the marksman legends creep in as well. Subverted in that Chris is actually the one with a history of being a marksman, not Leon.
* IWorkAlone: Unlike the other protagonists, Leon almost exclusively goes solo on his missions -- the only time he officially works with a partner is in ''Darkside Chronicles'' when he was starting out as a special agent, and in ''Resident Evil 6'' when he comes across Helena. This is made more apparent in the CG films, where he's the only agent dispatched to hotspots and war zones. much to various people's disbelief.
* JackOfAllStats: In the minigames such as "The Mercenaries", he's usually the most balanced character.
* JadeColoredGlasses: From ''4'' onwards.
* KnifeNut: In ''Resident Evil 4'', a disproportionate amount of fights seem to involve his knife, especially those with Ada and Krauser.
* KnightInShiningArmor: For Ashley.
** In another sense, he's very understandable to certain people with their lives become an absolute hell for them. He will help them in their current situation through the end.
* LeParkour
* LiteralistSnarking:
-->'''Salazar''': So maybe you have nine lives. But it doesn't matter now, Mr. Kennedy! I've sent my [[TheDragon right hand]] to dispose of you.
-->'''Leon''': [[{{Troll}} Your right hand comes off !?]]
* MadeOfIron: In a series with zombies and other unholy biological abominations, this isn't ''that'' notable but through the course of the games, Leon (among other things) spends several hours running around with a gunshot wound to the shoulder, is thrown upwards of thirty feet into a solid wall and is able to get back up, and falls forty feet from a helicopter, taking the weight of his fall on one shoulder hard enough to crack tempered glass. After struggling to get back up, he is seemingly able to push on after all of these injuries. Adrenaline may be a partial explanation, though his tenacity is also highlighted by the fact that he's considerably smaller than Chris but invariably gets hurt more.
* TheMcCoy: Despite his somewhat [[JadeColoredGlasses jaded demeanor]] and all the terrible things he's seen, he will go to absurd lengths to help people in need, even during and especially in the middle of the zombie apocalypse.
--> ''(After a man asks for help finding his missing daughter in a zombie-overrun college):''
-->'''Helena''': Leon, we don't have time for this.
-->'''Leon''': Then we'll ''make'' the time.
** He will sometimes overlap with [[TheSpock The Spock]], however; in ''Resident Evil 6'' it's Leon who is usually exhorting his similarly traumatized and/or vengeful comrades to put aside their troubles to step back and take a look at the big picture.
* MoralityPet: To Ada.
* MrFanservice: Explains a lot about his status as the [[LauncherOfAThousandShips Fandom Bicycle]].
* NervesOfSteel: As a general rule, [[SeenItAll considering the sheer amount of crap that's been thrown at him]].
* NiceHat: A [[FedoraOfAsskicking fedora]] to complement his Chicago 1920s mob alternate outfit ([=PS2=] version onwards).
* OnlyAFleshWound: Really, a bullet to the shoulder did nothing to stop him from fighting a ''giant crocodile!''
* PapaWolf: For Ashley, Sherry, and arguably Manuela.
* PeekABangs: Most notable in ''Resident Evil 4'' but keeps a similar style in subsequent appearances.
* PermaStubble: In ''Damnation'' and ''Resident Evil 6''.
* {{Pirate}}: His alternate costume in ''Resident Evil 6's'' Mercenary Mode.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: One of the side effects of his Plaga infection.
* SayMyName: Does this to just about everyone.
* ShutUpHannibal: Just as Salazar attempts to give a confident and well-prepared speech on terrorism, Leon stops him by throwing a knife at his hand that pins him to the wall.
* SleptThroughTheApocalypse: Oversleeping at a distant motel before heading to Raccoon City turned out to be the best mistake of his life.
* SlouchOfVillainy: A throne in RE4 lets him do this.
* SmokingIsCool: Subverted. He refuses a smoke when one is offered to him by a police officer in 4, and offers Luis gum instead when he says he wants a smoke.
* TheSmartGuy: Practically, if not intellectually. Although Ada refers to him as "practically a genius" in the US translation, the original Japanese instead stated that he was "a born survivor". Regardless, within the context of the statement she seems to mean he is more of a CombatPragmatist and Determinator as opposed to a literal genius. Even so, his status as CombatPragmatist among the major four protagonists is enough to qualify him for this.
* TheStoic: To an extent, but only really qualifies for the trope during the first half or so of ''Degeneration'' due to SeenThisBefore.
** NotSoStoic: The second half of Degeneration and all other appearances.
** Throughout the traumatic events of ''Resident Evil 6'', Leon comes off the most calm and controlled of his fellow survivors, knowing that seeing their respective missions to the end is all that matters. See [[CombatPragmatist Combat Pragmatist]] entry above.
* TakingTheBullet: [[spoiler:For Ada, in ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil2''.]]
* TookALevelInBadass: He start off as a rookie cop, and becomes a [[OneManArmy One Man Zombie-Slaying Army]] by ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil4''.
* TrapDoorFail: Leon narrowly manages to avoid being impaled on spikes by Salazar by using a grappling-hook.
* TrashTalk: ''Resident Evil 4'' has quite a lot of this between Leon, Saddler and Salazar when the Los Illuminados hack into his radio-phone.
* WhatMeasureIsANonHuman: Somewhat discussed in ''Darkside Chronicles''. [[spoiler: Leon's only heard of psychos wanting the Veronica Virus or people horribly mutating if they were forced to contract it. He expresses shock that it was used as a treatment for Manuela and that she harbors it and its powers within her. Once he adjusts, though, he shoots down Krauser's idea that they should kill her before she becomes a threat.]]
* WrestlerInAllOfUs[=/=]SuplexFinisher: Leon can suplex Zealots and solider Ganados (Strangely/[[AwesomeYetPractical Frustratingly]], not village Ganados), crushing their heads.
* WhereDoesHeGetAllThoseWonderfulToys: As the plot demands, he pulls a grappling hook and an IncrediblyObviousBug out of nowhere in RE4, then gets a rocket launcher from nowhere in Damnation. Admittedly, he ''does'' [[JustifiedTrope work for the government]], making it justified to an extent.

!!Claire Redfield
[[quoteright:221:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ClaireRedfield_7497.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:221:Claire in ''Film/ResidentEvilDegeneration'' (2008)]]
-->'Voiced by: AlysonCourt
-->''"Look, you have two choices here: kill or be killed, your call!"''

Chris's younger sister, Claire was introduced in ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil2'', returned in ''[[VideoGame/ResidentEvilCodeVeronica Code: Veronica]]'' and ''[[Film/ResidentEvilDegeneration Degeneration]]''. [[VideoGame/ResidentEvilGunSurvivor Survivor 2]] also shows her nightmares of the events of Code Veronica, and as such is both canon and non-canon at the same time. A fiery young girl, she's one of the few characters without special training, yet she still holds up fairly well against the zombies.

She is the only character who's kept the same American voice actress (AlysonCourt) throughout every appearance she's made.

* ActionGirl
* ActionSurvivor
* BadassNormal: For being the only one with no professional training, yet still managing to fight zombies as well as the rest. Although, according to ''The Darkside Chronicles'', [[IHaveBrothers her brother did give her some basic training]]. Still pretty badass, given everything she can do.
** BadassBiker: Claire's main hobby is riding motorcycles.
** BadassInANiceSuit: Her alternate outfit in VideoGame/ResidentEvilTheMercenaries3D
** BadassPacifist[=/=]TheSoCalledCoward: In a sense. After ''Code: Veronica'', Claire, unlike her brother and Leon, has given up actively fighting against bio weapon outbreaks to work with an NGO that focuses on helping its victims. As ''Degeneration'' shows, when push comes to shove, she's still entirely capable of kicking zombie ass.
*** FridgeBrilliance: Even if she has taken a non-combat role, she's obviously stayed in shape and she's kept up her weapons skills. At one point near the end of ''Degeneration'', she manages to score three consecutive headshots on the move in a dark hallway.
* BadDreams: Survivor 2 consists of hers.
* BadlyBatteredBabysitter: You lose count of how many times you missed Sherry, and in just ''one'' game. Happens again with Rani, though not to the same extent. This may also tread into BabysitterFromHell territory, since she does a complete u-turn from her CoolBigSis attitude at the end of the game and runs off to find Chris, leaving Sherry behind with Leon. Despite this, she seems to have come back for Sherry afterwards, since according to RE6 files she was Sherry's biggest role model and surrogate mother figure, so it can be surmised that Sherry was important to her, but her still-missing brother was even more important.
* BareYourMidriff: Her most well known outfit, from Code: Veronica has this.
* BrotherSisterTeam: Sadly, only possible in gameplay very briefly in Darkside Chronicles and within the Mercinaries 3D side game.
* CelibateHero: Seems to end up finding new friends and people to protect rather than love interests; Steve’s interest in her never really goes anywhere [[spoiler: and now never will]], and she has no known romantic relationships, not even a throwaway mention in the files or her backstory. It’s also implied that her [[MarriedToTheJob work for [=TerraSave=]]] keeps her too busy to date.
* ColourCodedCharacters: Once again, she's always dressed in some shade of maroon-pink, even if Code Veronica took it a bit father towards red.
* DeadpanSnarker: Of the four main protagonists, Claire is the only one who's really capable of effective, non-groanworthy humor.
--->'''Claire''', on the Tyrant in ''Code Veronica'': "Just a big cockroach that needed to be stepped on."
** Gets ten times funnier if you compare her comment from Darkside Chronicles that she hates cockroaches.
* HowDareYouDieOnMe: In ''Code: Veronica'', she tells Chris he better not die on her.
* ISurrenderSuckers: And then she blew up an entire squad.
* IWillFindYou: Claire's major story arc.
* LampshadeHanging: "Never saw this coming."
* MaleGaze: The camera likes to focus on Claire's plump derriere sometimes, like in one scene in Darkside Chronicles, where the camera views Claire from behind, and moves down a bit to emphasize and show her gorgeous backside. It's revealed to be from Steve's POV, as he was definitely checking her out.
* MamaBear: Between Sherry from ''[=RE2=]'' and Rani from ''Degeneration'', Claire is very protective of children even if she has none of her own.
** Not only did she dive into a group of zombies to save Rani, but she proceeded to ''bitch-slap'' a standing United States Senator.
* MarriedToTheJob: Her work for [=TerraSave=] keeps her so busy that it’s hard for her keep in touch with the loved ones she doesn’t work with, much less start a romantic relationship. In ''Degeneration'', when she jokingly blames her tiredness on a new boyfriend that won’t let her sleep, her friend immediately catches that “boyfriend” means “FDA report”.
* ParentalSubstitute: The files in ''Resident Evil 6'' mention that she spent a lot of time with Sherry while the latter was in government custody, to the point where Sherry regards Claire as her foster mother. This seems a little strange considering she's only seven years older than Sherry, though is nonetheless heartwarming.
* SiblingYinYang: While Chris is a serious and dutiful soldier, she is a playful and snarky civilian. What they do have in common is hotheaded recklessness and a tenancy to get themselves in way over their heads.
* ShoutOut: Her ''[=RE2=]'' vest says "Made in Heaven" and her ''Code: Veronica'' vest says "Let Me Live". Those are both titles of {{Queen}} songs.
** She may share the same taste in music as her brother, since one of his alternate outfits also says "Made in Heaven".
* TheChick, though don't assume she's helpless for it.
* [[{{Deuteragonist}} Tritagonist]]: Of the entire series.
* [[WhenAllYouHaveIsAHammer When All You Have Is An Umbrella]]: In ''Degeneration''.

Chris's younger sister, Claire was introduced in ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil2'', returned in ''[[VideoGame/ResidentEvilCodeVeronica Code: Veronica]]'' and ''[[ResidentEvilDegeneration Degeneration]]''.
