Nicu would eventually fall victim to his own vices and die in 2002, leaving the party without an official successor. Already being the de-facto leader of the country, Iulian Vlad was chosen as the next General Secretary and elected president. Despite his pledges of upholding the legacy of the 'Genius of the Carpathians', his time as leader of Romania has seen a slow move away from the excesses of the Ceausescu era, reducing the role of the personality cult, reintroducing austerity and moving the country towards a more mainstream form of communism.[[/labelnote]]
