* UtilityWeapon: The flamethrower/club he fights with is also a perfectly functional thermos, presumably filled with [[MustHaveCaffeine more coffee]].

* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Given his egocentric stories and that fact that he's clearly past his prime, one might put him down as a MilesGloriosus or PerilousOldFool. Nope; when it actually comes to combat, he acquits himself with aplomb.

* {{Deconstruction}}: Of the 'cool, mysterious, fantasy teacher' archetype. Ozpin's unwillingness to fully explain his rationale leads to Ironwood acting on his mistrust to take political action against him. Also, Ozpin abides by the classic tendency to let his students flaunt the rules by going on a mission outside their skill-level with only a single huntsman to back them up just because the protagonists are connected to the villains. The girls find themselves hard pressed during the mission and only force Roman to speed up the plans rather than fully stopping him. The girls almost get killed, Faunus do die, and the city is invaded by Grimm. Ozpin's superiors respond by revoking his authority over the Tournament and warning him they will be discussing his career options after the Tournament is over.

* AmbiguousSituation: At the end of Volume 3, Ozpin disappears. Qrow takes possession of Ozpin's cane but, like everyone else, doesn't know what has happened to him. His voice actor, Shannon [=McCormick=], states that Ozpin's situation is 'complicated' after Volume 3. Ozpin is last seen fighting Cinder. Although Qrow regards him as missing, he doesn't act like Ozpin's dead. Salem supports Cinder's insistence that Ozpin is dead when in the presence of her associates, but doesn't seem to actually believe it. His disappearance, Shannon's comment and Salem's behavior raise many questions, such as whether he won or lost the fight with Cinder, has gone into hiding or been captured by Salem, or whether something else has happened.
** Made even more so [[spoiler: by apparently speaking with Oscar in Volume 4, despite being dead, unseen, and a mirror.]]

* AbsurdPhobia: [[spoiler: Mice.]]
Port tries to give Yang a life lesson in handling fear; he mentions that even he sometimes gets afraid and its how fear is handled that matters. Oobleck ruins the lesson by pointing out to Yang that Port is actually terrified of mice. At first, Port tries to point out that they are causes of disease and famine, but is forced to admit that it's the hairless tails in particular that freak him out.
-->"They bring only disease and ''famine''!"famine! And don't even get me started on their tails! So hairless, it's simply unnatural."
