The Psychic-Type Gym Leader of Anistar City. She is very known for ability to predict the future that she managed to save Kalos from certain troubles.

* SignatureMove: Future Sight; for Ash it's ThatOneAttack in-universe, as he spends most of the battle trying to think up a way to counter it.

* ATwinkleInTheSky: This happened to him when he demonstrated the Muscle Mass Magnifying Machine.

* ImageSong: "[=DreamDream=]", the third XY ending, pops up as an insert song whenever something major happens with her or her Pokémon, e.g. Fennekin's evolution or Serena winning or performing in Showcases. * NoSell: Since Fairy-Types are immune to Dragon-Type attacks, her Spritzee easily takes a Dragon Breath from Sawyers's Bagon without a scratch.

* OrcusOnHisThrone: Has yet to take an active role in Team Flare's activities, letting his grunts, Scientists, Admins and [[UnwittingPawn Alain]] to do his dirty work. Even during the invasion of Lumiose City, it was the scientists and Z-2 (in 50% Forme) who are wreaking havoc, and Lysandre only stepped up to the plate when [[spoiler:Ash and Alain and their Pokémon decided to team up and face him.]]

* DragonTheirFeet: [[spoiler: True to his nature in the games, he shows up after Team Flare's defeat, trying to collect all the Zygarde cells and finish Lysandre's work.]]

* TheOneGuy: He is the only male scientist, and appears to have authority over the four female scientists.

* CombatPragmatist: :She takes no issue with striking down Zygarde with specialized machines while it is having a heated battle against Alain's Charizard.

* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: Was last shown being defeated and captured by Team Rocket... one scene before the [[spoiler: Megalith Zygare]] causes Lysandre labs to be reduced to rubble. Her survival is dependent on whether Team Rocket or anyone from Team Flare took her outside before that.

* StrongAsTheyNeedToBe: Noivern's power boost via evolution stands as [[DeusExMachina one of the most exaggerated]] in the anime, going from a fairly competent Noibat to [[CurbstompBattle overpowering Zapdos and Team Rocket's mech without so much as breaking a sweat]]. In later battles, Noivern is still strong, but to a far more reasonable level. It ultimately fainted in two of its three trainer battles due to type disadvantage and battle fatigue.

* ChildhoodFriendRomance: With Ash. Her crush began when they met as kids and as she [[CharacterDevelopment matured as a character]] so did her feelings showing that she genuinely is in love with him and shows this by wearing the ribbon he gave her on her chest and staying by his side and supporting him through thick and thin. Her feelings for Ash are so strong than in her first argument with Ash she ran away from him crying after [[AnguishedDeclarationofLove she almost blurts out her feelings for him]] because she couldn't take seeing him so broken and depressed that [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness he was a completely different person]] from the guy she fell in love with.

* EpicFail: The [[{{Omake}} PokéTV]] segment focusing on Hawlucha ends with him practicing his blows on a punching bag as Noibat watches on. Hawlucha punches the bag so hard that it flies up, but just as he tries to stand proud, the bag comes flying back down, knocking him over.

* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: As clumsy and {{adorkable}} as he can be, he is not one to mess with when it comes to Pokémon battles.

* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: Is the closest replacement to Brock than any other male companion. Being a Gym Leader, the older voice of reason to Ash with an {{adorkable}} side, the TeamChef, and is very knowledgeable.

* BreakTheCutie: {{Subverted|Trope}}. She breaks down into tears in front of her Pokémon the next day, early in the morning at a boardwalk, after losing the first round in her first Pokémon Showcase earlier in the episode. Fennekin and Pancham also held tears over their distraught Trainer and attempted to comfort her. However, she was crying because she was grateful for the opportunity to start her dream as a Performer despite the loss and renewed her resolve to become Kalos Queen with [[ImportantHaircut a change in style and wardrobe.]]

** Also {{played for laughs}} due to the facial expressions and responses she makes, mostly due to Miette's meddling.

* HeavySleeper: {{Implied|Trope}}, given that her mother had to use a Fletchling to force her out of bed.

* TheOneGuy: The only male on Serena's team.

* {{Tomboy}}: Lampshaded by Serena when she asks her mother to pick a hat, only to choose the opposite because she knows Grace picks the "less cuter items". Tellingly, despite [[TomboyWithAGirlyStreak having a feminine streak with keeping house and cooking]], Grace is evidently quite strong in character, and it's easy to see her younger self - an accomplished Rhyhorn Racer in her own right - as being a {{Hotblooded}} {{Tomboy}} back in the day. She's certainly more confrontational and (at times) sarcastic than previous mothers who appeared in the series.

* AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents: Meyer is absolutely {{adorkable}} when he officially meets Ash and Serena. He even assumes that Serena is ''Clemont's'' girlfriend.

* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: {{Downplayed}}. She gives off shades of this due to being a Fairy-Type specialist, speaking to her Pokémon in their language, and having a rather calm and elegantly cheerful personality.

* KarmaHoudini: [[spoiler: {{Defied}}. Although Malva was not fully aware of Lysandre's true plan, performed a HeelFaceTurn and ultimately helped save the world from destruction, she does not use any of them to escape punishment for being part of Team Flare. In fact, she states she'll turn herself to the authorities after disbanding Team Flare for good. Given all the above, however, it's unlikely she'll suffer any serious consequences.]]

* TwoGirlsAndAGuy: Pancham (male), Braixen and Sylveon (female)

* FridgeBrilliance: When Serena first meets Eevee, she struggles to get close to her because Eevee is so shy. At first this just seems like a random character trait, until Eevee's evolution into Sylveon. In the games, Sylveon is a strong special attacker, but she's not especially fast. What's the best nature to speed up a special attacker? Timid.

* But Now I Must Go: [[spoiler: He was released by Ash so he can help Squishy and Z-2 to clean up all the corrupted roots from Team Flare's experiment.]]

* MakingASplash: Surskit's secondary type, probably to counter Fire-Types.

* BareFistedMonk: Specializes in Fighting-types, even though her Lucario uses [[SimpleStaff Bone Rush]] very often.

* TerseTalker: ''Averted'' unlike in the games. She speaks normally, but with an air of grandiose like a prophet.

* ContrastingSequelMainCharacter: A recurring theme with Ash's Kalos team is that they subvert some of the trends that had been staples for Ash's teams from previous regions.
** Kalos marks the first time Ash has not had the regional Grass starter on his team. For that matter, the region is (so far) the only one where Ash hasn't caught any new Grass types as all.
** For the first time since Kingler, Ash has had a Water-type evolve, and similarly, it is the first time he has had any Dragon-type evolve.
** Hawlucha marks the first Pokémon in Ash's team since Torkoal that has only one stage of evolution.
** As indicated above, this is the first team where all of his regional Pokémon with the ability to evolve have done so.

* BareFistedMonk: His primary type. Most of his attacks are also Fighting type and he is not as good in flying as Fletchling/Fletchinder/Talonflame.

** BigBrotherInstinct: When he hears Noibat's cries coming from the forest, his first instinct is to rush there as fast as possible.

* DeathFromAbove: Flying Press. He couldn't perfect it until Ash teaches him how.
