* IronicName: Viper is an appropriate name for a member of Team Rocket, but compared to other members of the criminal organization, Viper is surprisingly reasonable and fair. * CanonForeigner: Not the organization itself, but rather its members. Nearly all the members are anime originals rather than characters based off the games, with the exceptions being Giovanni and Dr. Fuji (though Fuji in the game is not member of Team Rocket). This makes sense back in early days since Giovanni was the only named member of the team in Gen I and Gen II (not counting Jessie and James in ''Yellow''). Archer, Ariana, Proton, and Petrel, the Rocket Executives of ''Gold and Silver'' wouldn't be named until the remakes ''[=HeartGold and SoulSilver=]'' in 2009, long after the anime establishes the hierarchy of Team Rocket.

* AGodAmI: "I control the most powerful Pokémon in the world!"
* AxCrazy: The fact that almost every scene he appears in has him [[EvilLaugh laughing maniacally]] definitely paints him as this.
* BeardOfEvil: Has a beard and is a nasty piece of work. He also gets the dubious honor of being the first CardCarryingVillain of the movies.
* BigBad: Of the fourth movie. He callously wrecks a good portion of Ilex Forest with Celebi under his control and nearly destroys the Lake of Life.
* BigCreepyCrawlies: His Scizor.
* BlingBlingBang: He's wearing golden helmet, belt, [[SpikesOfVillainy shoulder spikes]], boots and bracelets.
* CardCarryingVillain: He openly boasts that the Pokémon he catches with the Dark Ball become evil Pokémon, with their power instantly increasing to the highest level.
* CoolMask: We finally get to see him without it at the end of the movie, after his defeat.
* DarkIsEvil: Two of his known Pokémon, Sneasel and Tyranitar, are Dark-type. And that's not getting into the whole business with the Dark Balls.
* DoppelgangerSpin: Scizor's Double Team.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: After barely a minute of screentime, he captures and corrupts the hunter's Tyranitar and has it lay waste to the poor man's ranch to get Celebi's whereabouts.
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: His moniker in the dub is "Iron-Masked Marauder", and he is not known by any proper name besides that.
* EvilerThanThou:
** He's introduced interrogating the movie's StarterVillain and his establishing character moment has him terrify the guy into submission.
** While a Team Rocket member that is more evil and effective than Jessie, James and Meowth is hardly rare, this guy leaves the trio completely horrified by his sociopathic methods, and trumps even other factions by even planning to back stab Giovanni himself.
* EvilIsHammy: He has a loud voice that he uses to boast of his evilness. That's what happens when a villain is voiced by '''Creator/DanGreen'''.
* FlatCharacter: There's ultimately not much to him apart from being a power-hungry, merciless brute whose main goal is to TakeOverTheWorld.
* HateSink: He has no positive traits whatsoever; being pure evil and is certainly proud of it.
* HeroKiller: [[spoiler:The main characters nearly died because of him, and he even causes Celebi's DisneyDeath.]]
* JetPack: Equipped with one in case things go south. It didn't help him in the end, obviously.
* KnightOfCerebus: He's one of the first truly vile villains to appear in the movies. In addition to being completely devoid of redeeming qualities, he also tries several times to have [[WouldHurtAChild Ash and his friends killed]], and his actions nearly resulted in [[spoiler:Celebi's death]].
* LackOfEmpathy: He doesn't care about anything other than raising Pokémon to their highest level and capturing Celebi to do the same in order to TakeOverTheWorld.
* MadeOfIron: He falls from hundreds of feet in the air, crashes through several tree branches and lands hard on the ground, and somehow survives this without even losing consciousness.
* MalevolentMaskedMan: Masked and the first nefarious movie villain introduced.
* MilesGloriosus: For all his truly depraved and malicious actions throughout the movie, after his whole plan is finally taken part, he grovels pathetically against Towa and some {{Com Mon}}s.
* NamedAfterSomebodyFamous: His original Japanese name, Vicious, is taken from late Music/SexPistols bassist Music/SidVicious.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: Iron-Masked Marauder does ''not'' sound like someone you'd want to come face to face with. His Japanese name, Vicious, is no slouch on this either.
* ObviouslyEvil: MalevolentMaskedMan? Check. BeardOfEvil? Check. SlasherSmile? Check. His entire demeanor just reeks evil.
* RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver: The majority of his outfit is black, but he wears a red vest over it. His Scizor and Sneasel also count.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: More glowing red eyes on his mask device, but it still counts.
* {{Sadist}}: He gleefully proves to be one when he succeeds in capturing Celebi with his Spider-Machine's claw, brutally electrocuting it, before capturing it in a Dark Ball. [[spoiler:Then, he reveals his true plans to use its power to overthrow [[BadBoss Giovanni]] and rule Team Rocket and the entire world himself.]]
* TheSociopath: He takes appalling delight in destroying the forest and crushing the minds of innocent Pokémon.
* SpiderTank: Has one where he got around in during the movie.
* TheStarscream: He planned on using Celebi to take over Team Rocket and eventually the world. Fairly small goal with the power of a time traveling legendary.
* TokenEvilTeammate: Downplayed but still noticeable. The Team Rocket members shown at that point are ''definitely'' far from saints, but they at least [[EvenEvilHasStandards have standards]].
* VillainRespect: Upon finding his Sneasel and Scizor tied to some rocks after fighting Ash and co., he just laughs and says, "Those kids are tougher than they look."
* VillainsWantMercy: Without the rest of his Dark Balls, he's at the mercy of the angry forest Pokémon before being tied up with a web shot.
* WouldHurtAChild: He not only has Celebi try to kill Ash and Sam multiple times, but he tries to kick Ash off of him when jet-packing several miles high up in the air.
* WrongContextMagic: It is an established fact that Poké Balls can't capture Pokémon that already belong to a Trainer, but the Marauder's Dark Balls have no such limitation. The only other Poké Balls able to do this are the "Mewtwo Balls" from ''Mewtwo Strikes Back'' and the Snag Machine-enhanced balls in ''Videogame/PokemonColosseum'' and ''VideoGame/PokemonXD''.
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: The Marauder's attitude when seeing Scizor and Sneasel tied up. He just leaves them there without a care and continues to pursue Ash and Celebi. His decision comes back to bite him back after he loses all his weapons and left at the mercy of the forest Pokémon.

They finance many schemes ranging from stealing Pokémon to using powerful artifacts that control Pokémon to creating the most powerful Pokémon in existence. All of this is to prepare Team Rocket for world domination.

to:

* HighTurnoverRate: Team Rocket doesn't tolerate failure, and Rocket members who fail too many times either get booted out of the organization or simply quit. Christopher, [[spoiler:Cassidy, and Butch]] are among the most notable former members of Team Rocket. And that's not counting Team Rocket members who got arrested after their operations were busted. This makes the Team Rocket trio's tenacity to remain in the organization a lot more impressive since they would typically be the first ones to receive the boot. In fact, they did get kicked out of Team Rocket for failing to pay their debts in one episode, but are let back in because the Rocket recruiter mentions that the organization was suffering a shortage of members as a result of the high turnover.

** He returned to the role during Team Rocket's ''Black and White'' arcs, taking up the role more directly in early Season 14 and the end of Season 15.
* AscendedExtra: Giovanni was for the large part a GreaterScopeVillain until ''Best Wishes'', where he takes the role of ArcVillain, directly assigning the trio most of their missions and fronting Operation Tempest personally. He retires back to headquarters afterwards however, back to his usual role.

** Ash and co very seldom fight Giovanni directly, but being the leader of the Team Rocket organisation, he is responsible for the TerribleTrio Jessie, James and Meowth and any other Team Rocket member they face in their journeys. Especially such during the Johto, Hoenn and Sinnoh arcs, when he grew so tired of the Trio's incompetence that he pretty much allowed them to do their own thing. Was also this for Mewtwo's character in the first movie.

* MightMakesRight: Giovanni only values powerful Pokémon. Even when Jessie, James, and Meowth gives him a rare (and certainly valuable) Pokémon that is Togepi, Giovanni dismisses them when they fail to explain what the baby Pokémon can do, never once considering how much money he could make by selling it in the BlackMarket.

* EvilDebtCollector: Debuted in the Johto arc this way, though not particularly evil acting, it constantly {{Troll}}ed the main trio for their unpaid debts to the organisation.

* TheSyndicate: Out of the all the villainous teams introduced in the anime, Team Rocket is the biggest of them all. And they only got more influential when their major rivals get disbanded or arrested by the authorities, leaving them free to expand and rule.

Added DiffLines:

* ShoutOut: Giovanni's depiction in the original series is a loving homage to all the [[Franchise/JamesBond classic Bond villains]]. Specifically to [[Characters/JamesBondBlofeld Ernst Stavro Blofeld]], being a shadowy mastermind that runs a massive criminal network who never shows his face and is seen petting his RightHandCat.

* AdaptationalVillainy: The anime emphasizes a lot more on Team Rocket's goal for world domination than other adaptations of Team Rocket. While it is mentioned in the games that Team Rocket's eventual goal is to rule the world, more emphasis was placed on them trying to make a profit out of their schemes rather doing something world-threatening. This depiction of Team Rocket would [[RetCanon eventually be integrated back into the games]] in the form of [[VideoGame/PokemonUltraSunAndUltraMoon Team Rainbow Rocket]], which heavily emphasized on Giovanni's bid for world domination.

* DetrimentalDetermination: Much like her daughter, Miyamoto doesn't know when to quit when it becomes apparent that the Pokémon she wants is uncatchable. Consequently, she ends up wasting most of her life pursuing Mew instead of caring for her daughter, [[GenerationXerox who grows up doing the same thing with Ash's Pikachu]].

Added DiffLines:

* GenerationXerox: Her fruitless attempts to find and catch Mew seems to foreshadow how her own daughter, Jessie, will face the same hopeless situation with Ash's Pikachu.

* HeroWorshipper: Or Villain Worshipper depending on how you view the [=TRio=], but Mondo looks up to Jessie, James, and Meowth as his idol and enjoys hearing their many stories of how they tried to capture Pikachu. He even has a crush on Jessie.
* IrritationIsTheSincerestFormOfFlattery: Irritation is a strong word, but it is clear that his admiration of the Team Rocket trio leads to him wearing a custom white Rocket uniform.
* OffscreenVillainDarkMatter: The radio drama reveals he is the offscreen middle man giving the Team Rocket trio all their food and supplies the entire time, being a "Team Rocket Special Delivery Member Trainee". Evidently, he only operates in the Kanto since the Team Rocket trio started having problems with food and supply shortages starting in Johto.
