** Ash is very fond of speed attacks, ranging from Quick Attack and variants like Aqua Jet and Accelrock to speed boosting moves like Flame Charge. They become a staple move of any Pokemon he has that possesses them, and a lot of Ash's Pokemon know these moves. Specifically 14 of his Pokemon: Pikachu, Pidgeot, Cyndaquil, Sceptile, Swellow, Staraptor, and Unfeazant know Quick Attack with Greninja, as a side note, having tried to learn it, Buizel and Oshawott knowing Aqua Jet, Pignite, Talonflame, and Torracat knowing Flame Charge, Infernape knowing Mach Punch, and Lycanroc knowing Accelrock. While Greninja's Water Shuriken is a priority move in game, it is not counted in this list as does not have a speed effect to it the way the moves above do in the anime.

** Recent beginnings downplay this. The beginning of the Kalos anime pitted him against the Ground-type Bunnelby, but he still handled Team Rocket fairly easily. The Alola anime showed him and Ash having difficulty with some sample competitions, but they were nothing like actual Pokémon battles. And in the Sword and Shield anime, he still could easily beat Team Rocket single-handedly despite them having a revolving-door of mix-and-match mook Pokémon at their disposal, and only had slight difficulty with Scorbunny due to unfamiliarity before ultimately beating it easily.

* MessiahCreep: When the series started, Ash was far more flawed and bull headed, and often fell into standard childish impulses like being arrogant or throwing tantrums. As the show progressed, he slowly matured into a NiceGuy with a more serious and insightful attitude, to the point that by XY he is nothing short of TheAce, idolized by most of the cast, with barely any of his former flaws still coming back to bite him. Sun and Moon dialed him back into a far more comedic and childlike character, though still keeps the majority of his NiceGuy characterization to maintain CharacterDevelopment.

** In [=SS022=], after Go decides that he'll leave Raboot behind in the Hoenn reason. Ash states, in a very cold tone of voice that while he while he will accept Go's decision if he's serious, he then asks if Go asked Raboot about it.
** In [=SS034=], he's noticeably more cocky and arrogant due to . Losing to Bea qucikly snaps him out of this.

Not an example of Motive Decay; The World Coronation Series is even bigger than the Galar League, hence why Champions, Elite Four members, and Gym Leaders all participate it in it from various regions.

* MotiveDecay: Originally, he wanted to catch every Pokémon there is. Now he is just bent on being a great trainer and having adventures with his friends. A case of Administrivia/TropesAreNotBad, since catching too many Pokémon brings a lot of problems to a show that focuses on the character development of the human cast and their Pokémon they carry with them. A more extreme example happens in Journeys, where Ash doesn't even display a interest in challenging Galar's Pokémon League and gyms, instead deciding to compete in the World Coronation Series championship.

* BrattyHalfPint: Acts like this in the first episode. He was disobedient, lazy, and openly mocked Ash whenever Ash made a mistake as a trainer. After Ash attempted to save it from a flock of Spearow, Pikachu came to Ash's rescue and mellowed out since then.

** While still a main character, he received less attention in the XY series in comparrison to the Froakie family.

* NewFriendEnvy: In SS030, Ash begins to neglect him in favor of Riolu, which eventually results in Pikachu running away for a while.

*** Mimey and Delia both seem to be in no danger from his shocking either. In The Dream Continues!, Mimey actually holds Pikachu in his hands and swings him up and down like a baby in a swing and there's nary a spark! Delia, of course, is Ash's mother, so she's safe regardless of anything.

** Averted hard in Journeys, where he retains his strategic battle style from the previous two series. This is mainly thanks to this series rotating between different regions instead of staying put like before. This trope stays averted, even when he does eventually go on a trip to Galar.

* TheLeader: He is essentially the leader of his group of friends in every installment of the series, since they are accompanying him on his journey, and from Hoenn onward, he sometimes provides guidance and mentorship to his female companions who are just starting their journeys. His male traveling companions, though usually older and wiser, have more of a TeamDad role in the group. Ash's leadership skills develop over the course of the series, to the point where it's more obvious than ever in the XY series that he's the one calling the shots. Sun and Moon downplays this due to the standstill format and Ash's more pronounced FishOutOfWater status, with him often willing to follow the direction of peers, though when situations become more serious he is still often the most fluent leading the others.

* DenserAndWackier: Played straight in Best Wishes where he gained a more bumbling personality and randomly lost most of his battle experience. Zigzagged for Sun and Moon thus far. While he's more hyperactive and comical personality wise, he retains a lot of his competence and knowledge from the previous regions and even shows a similar degree of insight as his more serious XY incarnation.

* DumbassNoMore: He was, to put it bluntly, an immature IdiotHero in the first season. Beginning with Orange Islands, he began to show more maturity and skill, and from Advanced Generation onward aside from Best Wishes, where he regressed and TookALevelInDumbass , he's merely been reckless and occasionally naive, to the point that by XY it's inaccurate to call him an idiot at all. Sun and Moon zigzags this, since while he is more outwardly buffoonish again, a lot of his insight and competence remains during serious situations, making him more a CloudCuckooLander than an IdiotHero.

** This continues to be downplayed in Journeys, still showing the tatics and strategy he had from the two previous series.
