* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: He begins his then [[PiratesWhoDontDoAnything "pirate"]] career by beating up ''four'' officially wanted pirates, (Alvida, Buggy the Clown, Don Krieg, and Arlong) dangerous by the standards of East Blue, and rather than giving him thanks (and the posted reward) for doing so, the Marines go and slap a $ 30 million bounty on him, and continue to antagonize him at every opportunity, raising his bounty if he so much as complains, let alone defends himself, up to and including threatening members of his crew, and framing him for attempted murder. [[ThisIsUnforgivable He completely loses all patience on the last two.]]

** At the beginning of the series, he was [[ThePiratesWhoDontDoAnything a criminal in name only]]. He was sometimes [[InnocentlyInsensitive a bit rude]], and beat up [[VillainWithGoodPublicity "good]] [[TheSocialDarwinist guys"]] who really deserved it, but that was all. [[DarkerAndEdgier Later on]], his morality has caused a mild InternetBackdraft due to his [[AlwaysSaveTheGirl certain questionable actions]].

** For the curious, the specific instance that caused many fans to believe he'd slid further down the scale was when he released half the inmates of Impel Down in his quest to save his brother, ignoring [[AntiVillain Hannyabal's and Magellan's]] [[JerkassHasAPoint frankly-very-good arguments]] as to why they should stay locked up. Of course at the time he was desperate and, as Ivankov mentions, they needed as much of a force as possible to get out of Impel Down. Especially when you're fighting your way from the bottom level to the surface with hundreds of Marines in your way.
*** Still, even after the time skip, long after [[spoiler:Ace had already died]], he has yet to show any sort of guilt for the dozens of criminals he freed. Then again, seeing as how they fought together with him during the war, he might see them as good guys. Plus, most, if not all of said criminals are now with LaughablyEvil Buggy, whom Luffy considers to be an ally.
*** Since Buggy appears to be spending his time looking for treasure or something, most of these criminals probably haven't done much.
*** These "criminals" may not even actually be criminals at all. We learned during the Enies Lobby arc, that before going to Impel Down people are given a "trial" at Enies Lobby. "Trial," of course, meaning a judicial triumvirate of one judge who automatically declares the defendant guilty, one who pretends to treasure the defendant's ''possible'' innocence, and the one in the middle who holds out the death penalty, as a compromise, and... a jury composed entirely of death row inmates whose only hope of seeing another day is to automatically pronounce the defendant "Guilty" regardless of any evidence presented, presuming they aren't just out to take as many people with them as they can before their sentence is carried out, as well as the fact that the only reason the Straw Hats went to Enies Lobby in the first place, is that the World Government, specifically [=CP9=], framed them for the attempted murder of Mayor Iceburg.

* EasilyImpressed: Despite living in a world where eating fruit can give magic powers and sea monsters bigger than the Titanic are aplenty, Luffy often gets wowed by the silliest things. Namely, Franky is goofy gadgets.

** Biggest one? DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES HURT THOSE THAT LUFFY PERSONALLY CONSIDERS [[TrueCompanions FRIENDS]] OR [[HonoraryTrueCompanion ALLIES.]]

** DO NOT be a [[BadBoss massive dick to your underlings or people who should be your comrades if not friends]][[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness and definitely DON'T try to kill them]] around luffy.

* ManChild: A perfect example of the trope. Technically averted before the timeskip, as he was still a teenager, but played straight afterwards. His particular brand of Asexuality also serves to hammer this home; he's arguably even ''less'' interested in sex and gender roles then you'd expect even the typical 7 year old to be.

* CanNotTellALie

** Touch his hat without permission and he will pound you.

* OutsideContextHero:

** At long last, we have Luffy's first ever actual ''transformation'': [[spoiler: Gear Fourth, Boundman. Boundman basically turns him into a rubber version of a [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nio fighting deity]]. He uses the full potential of his body's elasticity here, and combines it with his Armament Haki, retracting his limbs to launch them with absolute force, fly, ''remotely guide his punches'', and increasing his durability to new levels.]] He developed this state in order to continuously fight the powerful beasts in Rusukaina, the island he trained during the 2-year TimeSkip.

* ThePiratesWhoDontDoAnything: Luffy's not interested in the typical "pillaging and raping" pirate activities, but rather became a pirate for the sake of adventure. He fights with other pirates and the marines freely, but leaves civilians alone. Also, though he doesn't have any explicitly stated moral codes, he does lean towards only recruiting crew members who share his ideals on what it means to be a pirate.
** In the Romance Dawn pilot, he says the Morgania pirates are the ones who pillage and rape, while Peace Mains fight Morgania pirates and look for adventure. He is, of course, the latter.

* TheHero: He ''is'' the main protagonist, after all.
* HeroWithBadPublicity: [[spoiler: He quickly goes from being the hero of Dressrosa to being public enemy number one after they mistakenly think he's kidnapped princess Rebecca (he's actually taking her to see her father). Though it turns out to be a subversion, as the citizens of Dressrosa actually know full well where Luffy was taking Rebecca, and were chasing after him so that Fujitora wouldn't be able to destroy the ships the Straw Hats were using to escape, for fear of catching the civilians in the crossfire.]]

*** He also points out Vivi's naivete in thinking people won't die in war, stating that it happens and no amount of wanting it not to will change that.

* DynamicEntry: How did he get to Marineford? Well, it overlaps with BigDamnHeroes, 'cause he dropped a ship out of the sky! (It wasn't intentional, but that doesn't make it any less awesome)

* DumbIsGood: While Luffy has low intelligence about things like mathematics and science, he is a very good and mostly pure man. He will go out of his way to help people if they were kind to him, and recognize when he is in a situation he needs help in.
* DumbMuscle: There ''is'' a reason that his head has a bounty of 500,000,000 beri; he's so powerful that almost everyone fears him, even experienced pirates who are grown men. Despite this, he's dumb as rocks, and incredibly naïve.

* {{Expy}}: Of [[Manga/DragonBall Son Goku]], in a spiritual sense. Oda said he designed Luffy based on what 'manliness' meant to him as a child. Incidentally, Luffy met Goku in the ''Dragon Ball x One Piece - Cross Epoch'' crossover. He even got to ride on the Flying Nimbus.

* BadassAdorable: In just a few sho

* BadassAdorable: In just a few short years [[FromNobodyToNightmare he's gone from an unknown with barely a rowboat to his name to one of the most infamous pirates in the world, with one of the highest active bounties]]. He is also a cute and handsome young man. He gets really adorable in his chibi-form after using 3rd gear.
* BadassBoast:
** "I'M GONNA BE KING OF THE PIRATES!!!" It may not sound like much to our ears, but this statement is considered utterly shocking in-universe, as many mere mortals are scared to challenge the world like this. Furthermore, Luffy makes this boast to anyone, no matter who they might be or how strong they are, including ''[[WorldsStrongestMan Whitebeard]]''.
** In the Alabasta arc: "I am the man who will surpass you [Crocodile]!" Considering he said that to one of The Seven Warlords of the Sea, right after he rebuffed the above statement, that's really something.
** And in the Thriller Bark arc: "Tell that idiot Moria, that if he lays a hand on my crew, I'll blast this island till there's nothing left!" Important to note that then Moria was also a Warlord, one with a higher bounty than him.
* BadassFamily: Just the latest in the Monkey line to cause headaches for the World Government.
* BadassLongcoat: Wears one in ''Anime/OnePieceFilmStrongWorld''.
* BadassOnPaper: If you were to put his relative strength level and improbably feats on paper, Luffy is a ''very'' dangerous pirate. However, paper doesn't account for his kind, cheerful behavior, or the fact [[CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass that he's an idiot]]. This frequently crops up after the TimeSkip, where people hear various rumors about Luffy (including that he's an eight-meter tall giant) and have a hard time connecting such an infamous pirate with... well, [[IdiotHero Luffy]].
* BadLiar: The only way his lies could be more blatant would be if a neon sign appeared on top of his head and flashed "I AM LYING" every time he lied.
* BalloonBelly: Comes with being a BigEater and his elastic nature. Actually uses it in combat to great effect. [[spoiler:After the TimeSkip, he has learned to more accurately return the projectiles upgrading his belly into an AttackReflector.]]
** [[spoiler: Uses it to even better effect with Gear Fourth, where his permanent and seemingly comical balloon belly is actually a ''very'' important part of the transformation; even the mightiest blows simply bounce off him harmlessly if somebody tries attacking his body.]]
* TheBeastmaster: He's show shades of it ever since the timeskip, being able to tame and befriend huge and/or dangerous animals in a flash thanks to his Haki.
* BenevolentBoss: Luffy is a kind and loving captain to his crew, and doesn't control through fear, but genuinely loves them all.
* BerserkButton:
** Get between him and his food, and he will be angry.
** Touch his hat without permission and he will pound you.
** He may not act like it all the time, but for him, piracy is SeriousBusiness. He doesn't take kindly to those who flaunt the jolly roger. Wapol learned that the hard way.
** Tell Luffy you're going to become the Pirate King before he does and his response is usually a finishing move. [[note]] There are exceptions to this general rule. Some have claimed they are going to be the Pirate King and he just boasts how it will be him, leading to them becoming TheRival and/or WorthyOpponent. [[/note]]
** Trampling people's dreams, tends to tick him off.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: He's nice and kind-hearted, but you ''reeeeally'' don't want to make him angry. Seriously.
** ''Anime/OnePieceFilmStrongWorld'' should have been called ''Luffy Gets Angry: Shit Goes Down''.
** The same can be said of the sixth movie, the only time where Luffy [[spoiler:''kills'' the BigBad.]]
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Luffy is usually a simple-minded goofball. Just be careful not to get him genuinely angry.
* BigBrotherWorship: Downplayed version. While Luffy clearly idolized his older [[spoiler:adopted]] brother Ace when they were younger, they did have a bit of a sibling rivalry and not once was Luffy ever blind to Ace's faults. Nonetheless, it can be argued that Ace was the most important person in Luffy's life, protecting him and practically raising him to be the happy and carefree person he is today. [[spoiler:Which is why Luffy was absolutely ''devastated'' when Ace died to protect him. One of the only reasons why Luffy never crossed the DespairEventHorizon after Ace's death is the realization that Ace died so he could live and would've wanted him to move on with his life.]]
* BigDamnHeroes: During the Marineford arc, he manages to pull this trope off as he and the rest of the Impel Down escapees crash down from the sky, ''ship and all!''
* BigEater: The elastic stomach probably helps. At multiple points, he eats until his entire body is horribly distended. He can then digest it in about five seconds.
* BloodBrothers: With [[spoiler:Ace and Sabo]]. None of them were related of course, but they were very close and even made a ceremony of [[spoiler:drinking sake and became brothers]]. Luffy was heartbroken by both [[spoiler:their deaths]], so no words can express the joy on his face when he learns that [[spoiler:he still has one brother left in the world.]]
* BloodKnight: Though not to the extent of Zoro (who can border on NominalHero at times), Luffy loves a good fight – and it doesn't help that it's one of the few things in this world he's ''good'' at, to the point of being considered a genius. Though he doesn't like pointless fights with weaklings, as shown with [[SmugSnake Bellamy]].
* BookDumb: Very much so when it comes to science and medicine -- he once tried to heal a wounded Zoro by pouring booze on his face because "Zoro likes sake, so it'll make him better". However, he's a genius in combat, social skills, and politics, beating "wittier" enemies like [[ImplacableMan Eneru]].
** In a filler arc, the Rainbow Mist Saga, the entire crew minus [[TheStoic Robin]] were all utterly shocked that Luffy was ''interested in a book'' that she was reading, even though he was utterly bored out of his mind at the time.
** One of the TV specials implies that he can't even ''read'', much like Zoro.
* BornLucky: He has been described as having the Devil's Luck. While the lightning bolt that saved him on the execution platform may have been Dragon's doing, he's survived a number of encounters due only to extreme good fortune.
** Basil Hawkins later says that no matter the situation Luffy always has a slim chance of survival. Combine this with Luffy's determinator mentality and brilliant luck...
** This doesn't just apply to surviving certain death either. Even taking into account his MagneticHero qualities Luffy has made some ''very'' helpful allies ranging from former members of the incredibly powerful Shichibukai to current members of the Revolutionary Army and even fellow Supernovas are on friendly terms with him. He even has someone that is all but said to be the canonical WorldsMostBeautifulWoman in love with him.
* BornWinner: Much like his [[spoiler:adopted]] brother, Luffy's heritage meant he had a ''lot'' of potential – the only difference is that his took a little longer to show. As a trade-off, Luffy was also completely unaware of his heritage when he was younger (unlike Ace) and was therefore more emotionally stable.
* BreakTheCutie: Unlike all his crewmembers, who have a traumatic past that defines their personality, Luffy’s breaking moment happened in the present storyline. Afterwards he TookALevelInBadass and became even more determined to protect his loved ones.
* BringIt: With the dub version, ''this'' is what went down after the [[DidYouJustFlipOffCthulhu flag was burnt]]:

* BullyHunter: In spite of his adamant claims to ''not'' be a hero, Luffy does NOT gracefully tolerate over-entitled assholes who use their positions and power to flagrantly bully those weaker than they are; he has a particularly sore spot towards {{Bad Boss}}es who mistreat loyal employees who they should be taking care of. Doing/being either of the above in front of him is a one way ticket to being pounded into the pavement. Note that this attitude of Luffy's is contagious; associate with him long enough and you will also catch his intolerance towards bullies (as shown with the originally cynical and unfeeling Zoro), even if you were once (working for) a bully yourself.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Luffy is an absolute idiot, having NoSenseOfDirection, constantly eating so much and then falling asleep right afterward and goes right for danger for no other reason than "FUN FUN FUN!". None of his crew mates deny that he's an idiot. None of his crew mates also deny that he deserves to be their captain, both as a fighter and as a leader.
* ButForMeItWasTuesday: Rare good-guy example. He repeatedly annoys people (including [[ClingyComedyVillain recurring villains]]) by forgetting [[AccidentalMisnaming their names]], [[SignatureMove signature moves]] or even that he's met them at all.
* ButtMonkey: Constantly a victim of (comical) abuse from his crew mates due to his stupidity, and he frequently ends up in strange situations that keep him from fighting.
* CannotKeepASecret: Most notably during the Impel Down arc. He casually tells Ivankov and ''everybody'' standing around in earshot that his father is Dragon the Revolutionary. After escaping, he does it ''again'' by telling everybody that Ace is Gold Roger's son. Both times he remembers that he wasn't supposed to tell that to anybody else.
* CatchPhrase:
** "I'm gonna be Pirate King!"
** "MEAT!"
* CanNotTellALie
* CementShoes: He planted both his feet on the cement ground of the Arlong Park, then grabs Mohmoo the sea cow and throws him far away. Arlong, with his strength, picks up the chunk of ground [[LeftStuckAfterAttack Luffy stuck himself on]] and then throws him, with said chunk of ground, into the water. Luckily, the [[KryptoniteFactor normal vulnerability to water of a Devil Fruit user]] only stops them from controlling their own powers instead of negating them entirely, allowing the townspeople to stretch his head out of the water so they can give him CPR.
* CharacterDevelopment: Prior to the timeskip, he was your typical Shonen Hero. Kind as a saint, strong as hell, dumb as rocks. After the timeskip, however, he is notably leaps and bounds more composed than he was prior to it, now preferring to state what he'll be doing and go through with it rather than scream and shout (except when he's really riled up) and, more importantly, he is actually a respectable and capable leader, listening to his crewmates but never letting himself be questioned (save for in comedic moments) as Captain. All in all, he's gone from Shonen Hero, to Shonen... well, pirate captain. And, while he's still ''definitely'' Luffy as before, Marineford and Rayleigh have beaten some serious growth into him.
** As if to enforce this, when [[spoiler:Big Mom's ship arrives to capture Caesar, Luffy immediately inquires whether or not Big Mom is on the ship in order to make his next decision of whether or not allowing the Straw Hats at sea to fight.]]
* CharacterTics: Luffy has a tendency to suck his lips in and turn his head to the side when an attack or technique fails to affect him, such as Enel's various electrical attacks or Boa Hancock's Mero Mero no Mi.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: Thanks to the TrainingFromHell his grandpa put him through, he's strong enough to destroy steel with his bare hands, knock out large sea monsters, and ''push apart two buildings he was stuck between''. And that's not even using his Devil Fruit ability.
* ChasteHero: Though he knows what romantic relationships ''are'', he just isn't interested... this actually becomes a plot point when he ends up on the island of the Kuja.
* ChickMagnet:
** He's one of the only characters in the series to actively have women falling for him, ranging from [[StalkerWithACrush Alvida]] (post-{{Gonk}} phase), to almost the entirety of [[LadyLand Amazon Lily]]. His reactions range from being suitably creeped-out, complete obliviousness or platonically appreciative.
** He's funny, strong-willed, enthusiastic, ''insanely nice to nearly everybody he meets'', and incredibly righteous. Naturally, [[TruthInTelevision he has plenty of real life fangirls]]. He's also young, cute, and seriously well-toned. The girls don't go gaga just because of his personality.
** Now he's got the [[PettingZooPeople Minkwoman]] Wanda repeatedly licking his face while commenting that "hairless bodies are quite beautiful". He's not amused.
** [[spoiler: Sanji's sister Reiju seems to rather... ''enjoy'' getting to give him a KissOfLife while he suffers from poison.]]
* CloudCuckooLander: When he tries to be at his sharpest outside of battle, he can only pull this off. Most of the time he's something between TheDitz and TheFool.
* CombatClairvoyance: After the timeskip, Luffy has mastered Observation Haki, a power that allows one to anticipate an opponent's next move. He has learned it to such an extent that he can [[SpiderSense sense where his enemies are]].
* CombatPragmatist: Luffy is not adverse to hitting below the belt or taking {{Human Shield}}s when necessary... or if it's amusing.
* CompellingVoice: A manifestation of his awesomeness. It used to be involuntary and basically limited to really desperate shouting. He doesn't need to actually speak to use it anymore.
* ConfusionFu: Luffy, unlike the other characters, seems to fight freestyle. Being rubber makes this befitting. It even turned into an advantage against Eneru, who can read minds. Luffy simply ricocheted his moves off a wall, making it impossible for anyone, including himself, to predict their path.
* ContagiousHeroism: Luffy is hardly a hero (and doesn't want to be one), but he has a massive problem with powerful people abusing their power and often demonstrates it with his fists. Thanks to his charismatic and caring nature, this attitude quickly takes hold on most of his crew mates, even on the stoic and previously uncaring swordsman Zoro and the emotionally reserved Robin, who betrayed every other organization she was a part of before she met Luffy.
* CripplingOverspecialisation:
** He's very useless at anything but having fun, eating, sleeping, being happy and amiable, and beating people up. He gathers his crew around him over the course of his adventure because he knows he can't go on without their help.
** He acknowledges this during the Arlong arc when Arlong sneers down at him for keeping friends. He retaliates by picking up a pair of swords and waving them wildly in Arlong's face, to no avail. Arlong sneers at him some more, for now trying something he knew he couldn't pull off, and Luffy comes out with this {{Tearjerker}} of a line, while the camera pans over each crew member that fulfills each job:
-->I know! Of course I can't use swords, you idiot! I can't navigate! I can't cook! I can't even tell lies! This is why I need my friends if I want to survive!
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Often both a badass ''and'' a moron at the same time.
** He actually tries to weaponize his idiot nature in the Eneru fight, in order to defeat his mind-reading. It works, but he also becomes too stupid to remember to attack.
* CruelMercy: According to Oda, the reason Luffy doesn't kill his enemies (with the exception of the BigBad from the 6th movie) is because he feels that letting them live with their dreams destroyed [[FateWorseThanDeath is a worse punishment]], which makes sense considering the series is about characters pursuing their dreams. Considering what they did to Ace, however, Blackbeard and Akainu might be exceptions.
* CuddleBug: Luffy shows how much he loves his friends by hugging them, ''regardless of gender.'' This can get problematic when the girl in question is actually romantically interested in him; doubly so because he [[{{Asexuality}} won't]] return romantic love.
* CursedWithAwesome: Like all Devil Fruit users, he's gained incredible powers at the cost of never being able to swim and being branded a freak forever. Not that either of these facts bother him, though. And unlike other Devil Fruit users, this does not scare him away from water sports. It bothers him less than others (like, say, Buggy) because Luffy was ''never'' able to swim even before eating the Gum-Gum fruit. The Red-Haired Pirates nickname for him was "Anchor".
* CurtainsMatchTheWindows: Luffy has black hair ''and'' black eyes.
* DangerousForbiddenTechnique: All his [[SuperMode Gears]] carry significant drawbacks; Gear Second is CastFromHitPoints and Gear Third had the side effect of making him shrink and lose speed and mobility (though he's overcome those weaknesses). Gear Fourth has the biggest drawbacks yet, it has a TimeLimit and when it's up, he's drained of his haki and exhausted to the point that he can't even move for ten minutes. Meaning, he must finish the fight while it lasts, or his enemy will make short work of him during his downtime. This is even more evident when you realize that none of his enemies have such downtime when using ''their'' SuperMode[=/=]LimitBreak.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Luffy was abandoned by his parents and abused by his grandfather in training (though both of these experiences were PlayedForLaughs), but was given a relatively stable upbringing with the mountain bandits of Goa and his [[spoiler:adoptive]] brother, Ace. Still, he suffered a traumatic experience after eating his devil fruit where his idol, Shanks, lost an arm saving him from a Sea King. [[spoiler:He and Ace then suffered an arguably even more traumatic experience during the fire that burned Grey Terminal, which eventually ended with the death of their other best friend and sworn brother, Sabo. Of course, Sabo turned out to have survived, but that's a moot point considering he didn't find out years later, long after the traumatic experience of losing Ace.]]
* DeathGlare: He always stares down enemies, and when pissed gives these. Two particularly intense faces occur, 1st was right before he defeated Lucci with his [[RapidFireFisticuffs Jet Gatling]]. And the 2nd one was to Jimbei while he was having a truly epic FreakOut on Amazon Lily. Later becomes one of his regular abilities thanks to Haki.
* DefeatingTheUndefeatable: Many of his opponents. Eneru is probably the best example, as he spent most of the Skypiea arc proving how strong he was. This becomes a plot point: A big part of the character development of Luffy comes from the realization that it's impossible for him to beat the most powerful Marines and pirates of the New World. Cue 2 years training with the Pirate King's first mate. Following that, Luffy resumes the trend, [[spoiler:starting with bringing down Donquixote Doflamingo]].
* DelayedReaction: Used ''a lot'' of times for comedic effect.
* {{Determinator}}:
** Luffy powers through injuries that should have killed him several times over, often without outside assistance. In no particular order, he's been dehydrated to a dessicated husk, skewered, cut, drowned, blown up, bitten (a ''super'' strong shark bite, mind you), beaten to a bloody pulp, stabbed, crushed, covered in arrows (in one of the movies), frozen, burnt, shot by ''lasers'', and poisoned to the point of '''melting''', yet is still alive and kicking.
** The poisoned part was almost a subversion, because it all but killed him. He was healed by Ivankov, but the technique used was explicitly reliant on the patient's will to live and even Ivankov was shocked that Luffy recovered in a few hours, despite his initial estimate that it would take days for Luffy to recover, if he recovered at all.

* TheDreaded: Due to his actions during the Paramount War, along with his actions while with his crew (such as Enies Lobby and Sabaody), Luffy's become so infamous that anyone who isn't as strong as one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea instantly fears him. For instance, at Corrida Colosseum, while incognito, he accidentally gives his real name and everyone immediately freaks out. They only stop once they see the sign on his back that says "Lucy", and start remembering rumors about him being an eight-meter tall giant.
* DumbIsGood: While Luffy has low intelligence about things like mathematics and science, he is a very good and mostly pure man. He will go out of his way to help people if they were kind to him, and recognize when he is in a situation he needs help in.
* DumbMuscle: There ''is'' a reason that his head has a bounty of 500,000,000 beri; he's so powerful that almost everyone fears him, even experienced pirates who are grown men. Despite this, he's dumb as rocks, and incredibly naïve.
* DumbassHasAPoint: There have been moments where he surprises his crew by saying something that actually makes sense:
** In the Alabasta Arc, Luffy refuse to follow Vivi to Koza's main base as he stated that Koza and his rebellion army would never believe her since this is coming from Luffy and his crew who are pirates and instead go after Crocodile at Rainbase instead.
** After dropping down from Skypiea, Luffy suggest the crew get a shipwright to fix the Going Merry (despite him suggesting a musician after the crew was surprised by his words).
* DynamicEntry: How did he get to Marineford? Well, it overlaps with BigDamnHeroes, 'cause he dropped a ship out of the sky! (It wasn't intentional, but that doesn't make it any less awesome)

* EnemyMine: Seems to have a knack for pulling this off, even in the most unlikely of cases. Mihawk actually considers this his most dangerous ability.
* EnhancedPunch: Luffy has many of this kind of move, but the most notable would be his Gum Gum Pistol, Bazooka and many variations of it, which are given additional range and force by his RubberMan powers. Later, he learns to blow his limbs up to gigantic size for even more force.

The first is when he stabs his own face at just 7 years old in order to prove his manliness, and the second would be when he starts his adventure by punching out a giant monster, yelling out his ambition in triumph, and then laughing it off when he gets sucked into a whirlpool a few minutes later.

His selfishness isn't your typical it's-all-about-me-attitude, more about his selfish desires like having meat and good adventure, becoming the pirate king, and protecting his friends. In the Sabaody arc, he didn't act on impulse but he seethed with TranquilFury. Luffy did what he felt he had to do, even though he knew it would have grave results. He apologized immediately after hitting Saint Charloss, but showed no regrets. Including the Sabaody incident, Luffy's selfishness is portrayed through the whole series, sometimes in comedic light, but it has always been there, and several characters have commented on it.
** Honestly, it's his fearlessness more than anything that proves to be both his greatest asset ''and'' his greatest flaw. His utter lack of fear of anybody or anything has led to a lot of stupid decisions over the years, and although he sometimes sees it as a problem, he has yet to find any effective way to deal with it, and the one time he ''tried'', Kuma scattered his crew across the world in such a way that it looked like they were outright atomized to him.
* AFatherToHisMen: Luffy deeply cares for his crew and will go PapaWolf on anyone who dares to hurt any of them.
* FearlessFool: More often than not, he never realized how strong his opposition/problem in front of him would be, and he'd just punch it until it goes down. It works well for him most of the time because of his Determinator traits and having a very good luck.
* FightOffTheKryptonite: Two notable occasions: In Alabasta, in Crocodile's ElaborateUndergroundBase which was flooded, he fought off Bananagators with Zoro and Sanji, as half his body was already underwater. Then in Fishman Island, most of his fight with Hody Jones had him at major disadvantage as he doing it underwater. It was still ridiculously one-sided even before the fight was taken to a bubble-coated giant ship where he could fight with some air.
* FlashStep: When using [[SuperMode Gear Second]].
* FoeTossingCharge: He dashed through the Marine headquarters and proceeds to send hundreds of guards flying along the way.

* FriendsAreChosenFamilyArent: It's a running gag that Luffy hardly even knows about his family, let alone their infamous reputations, while he shows the utmost care for his friends.

* FromBadToWorse: The whole Paramount War saga was ultimately this for him. Starting from the conflict at Sabaody that costs him his crew (courtesy of Kuma), then finding out in Amazon Lily that his brother is about to be executed, then goes to Impel Down to rescue him, only for Luffy to be too late as Ace was transferred to Marineford before Luffy reaches his cell (not to mention the horrible injuries he suffered beforehand), and then more climactic and hard fight at Marineford, and [[spoiler:Ace died at Akainu's hands trying to protect Luffy]]. Cue AngstComa and then an epic FreakOut. The only good things he get are companionship in form of Hancock, Impel Down inmates (Bon Clay, Jinbe, and Ivankov especially), and Law.

* GeniusDitz: Luffy is childish and naive, but his brilliance is found in fighting, first and foremost. He took one of the weakest Devil Fruits , one which his own more talented brother told him would amount to nothing in combat, and turned it into one of the most dangerous abilities in the series. Luffy constantly figures out new applications of his RubberMan powers in ingenious ways, showing he is able able to grasp the properties of rubber to the extent that he can learn how to set his arm on fire and create the Gears. He is also very perceptive and adaptive to his environment, being able to figure out Crocodile's weakness of the verge of death and creating a number of counterattacks to Enel's Mantra on the spot. Mihawk even commented that he was "unusually clear headed" during the Summit War, implying he's not as much of an airhead as he seems. He also learned all Rayleigh had to teach him about Haki in just one and a half years, excels at understanding people's emotions and motivations, and possesses a form of wisdom that allows him to see the simplest solution needed (such as knowing that interfering with the Alabasta army won't guarantee anything and what's needed to be done is defeating Crocodile.)
* GoodOldFisticuffs: He fights predominantly with his fists.
* GoOutWithASmile: Just like anybody else with D. as their middle initial, he's prone to this trope. Notably, he smiled before Buggy almost cut his head off at Logue Town.
* GratuitousEnglish: Most of his attacks have English names, particularly in Gear Second.
* GreaterNeedThanMine: It does not matter that he is badly hurt and freezing to death, or poisoned to the point of ''melting'', his friends come first. He never even asks for himself to be helped, merely begs for whoever is there to aid his companions.

* HollywoodHealing: His battles only leave story relevant scars, like his trademark one under his eye he gave himself in Chapter 1 or [[spoiler:the new X shaped scar Akainu gave him]].
** Justified because he's made of rubber, thus extremely difficult to wound. The eye scar happened before he ate the Gum-Gum Fruit.
* HonorBeforeReason: During the Davy Back Fight, the Strawhats lost the first round, forcing a member of their crew to join the Foxy Pirates. The Strawhats win the second round and get to pick a Foxy Pirate to join them. Nami suggests picking Foxy himself, as he would be unable to participate in the third round duel and they would win by default, getting Chopper back without fighting. However, Luffy vetoes the plan, due to disliking Foxy too much to want him on the crew.
* HotBlooded: In fine Shonen fashion. He's a more tranquil version, however.
* HowDoIShotWeb: As a child who had recently eaten the Gum-Gum Fruit, Luffy was rather unskilled with his stretching powers – especially when compared to his mastery at the start of his journey, years later. His signature Gum-Gum Pistol? His first attempt bounced off the ground and back into his own face.
* HulkingOut: His latest SuperMode turned him into a TopHeavyGuy.
* HumbleHero: Another dominant trait of Luffy is his humble nature: he does not brag about the powerful foes he's defeated in the past, though he's not above about claiming that no one has ever beaten him in the past (which is not true, having been defeated many times by Ace and Sabo as a child, twice by Smoker (though non-fatal), twice by Crocodile before defeating him, once by Aokiji, once by Rob Lucci before defeating him, once by Gekko Moriah before defeating him, once by Bartholomew Kuma, once by Magellan and once by Kizaru, all in the past). He remains humble despite having done outrageous acts like defeating Shichibukai-level pirates and issuing the order to burn down the World Government Flag back at Enies Lobby. When Franky pointed out the latter, Luffy only replied that it was nothing to get worked up over (hinting that he only gave the order on a mere whim), for he and his crew were only there to take back a crew member that was taken from them. When Sengoku tried to cover up Gekko Moriah's defeat by ordering Bartholomew Kuma to kill the Straw Hat Crew, Vice Admiral Garp told him this, practically lampshading the trope:

** His first outfit, the red vest/blue shorts with sandals combo as well as his first Time skip outfit.
* IdenticalGrandson: Garp looked identical to Luffy when he was a kid. [[http://images.wikia.com/onepiece/images/d/da/Kid_garp.PNG He even had his scar at a young age.]] Even now you can see the resemblance, as Garp looks like a much older and brawnier Luffy.
* IdiotHero: Luffy is quite smart for a Shonen Hero, and not just in combat; he has shown an understanding of basic physics, social skills, survival skills, and politics. The 'Idiot' part comes from his simple outlook on life; while he understands that the current of Reverse Mountain has a scientific explanation, he prefers to just call it a "Mystery Mountain" because it's easier and more fun. That sort of description extends to several other subjects.
* IGaveMyWord: His word is the greatest thing he can give. He takes it seriously. How serious? He promised Robin he'd be her friend forever, so when she was taken from him, he went on a rampage resulting in the complete annihilation of a World Government island, thousands of unconscious mooks, and a staggering threefold (that would be two hundred MILLION) increase in his bounty. Do note that it's when he gave his word ''willingly'' that he will uphold it to the best of his power; when he's forced by circumstances to do it (such as when Hachi and his crew told him not to hurt any World Noble, and when Law told him to just capture Caesar), he can break his word if he gets too pissed off.
* IJustWantToBeFree: Luffy's reason for wanting to become the Pirate King is because he views the Pirate King as 'the one with the most freedom'.
* ImmuneToBullets: They simply bounce off, though in the beginning of the series he claimed to still not like getting shot. Ostensibly he got used to it pretty quickly, considering the sheer number of times (often on purpose and/or easily avoidable) that he gets shot throughout the series.
* ImNotAHeroIm: Invokes this with Jimbei. He says he likes heroes, but he knows he's a pirate.
* ImprobableAge: While this applies to the entire crew, Luffy's special in that he's already a legendary pirate and with a 400,000,000 berry bounty, considered one of the frontrunners for becoming Pirate King, and captain of one of the strongest crews on the Grand Line, all at the age of ''19'', while being a pirate (post-TimeSkip) for only about three years, two of which were spent training alone. He's also one of the three ''youngest'' members of the crew, being the same age as Usopp and only two years older than Chopper.
** What's EXTRA interesting is that the CompetenceZone in One Piece is ''very'' adult-centric. Luffy and the Straw Hats are tough, but the strongest characters are often in their middle ages, and there is no shortage of [[BadassGrandpa badass grandpas]] either, because, well... they've just been at it for much longer than Luffy and the crew. But, once the enemies had finally surpassed the 17 year old Luffy, he ''still'' only needed two years of extra training to catch right up again.
* ImprovFu: This is Luffy's main fighting style, as he'll use anything available to him so he can win. This causes his opponents to underestimate him because, more often than not, it looks like him fooling around rather than fighting seriously.
* IncorruptiblePurePureness: No matter what happens, he will be always carefree and smiling non-stop. He never actually intended anything bad either because of his moral values or his naivete. Even Hancock's beauty has no effect on him.
* IndyPloy: Uses these quite a few times: notably during his fight with Eneru [[hottip: *:make himself not think and fighting purely on instinct, then using his rubber powers to ricochet his attacks off a wall to beat him up to counter his Color of Observation]], during the assault on Enies Lobby [[hottip: *:charge at the island as his abilities allow him to get there first, and beat up as many of the soldiers and agents there as you can until he gets the attention of one of the CP9. This actually made the plan the others came up with that much smoother, in the long run]], and later against [[spoiler: Doflamingo [[hottip: *:challenge him with Law, and when he doesn't directly fight him, and uses his puppetry powers instead, pretends to lose his cool and go after Law, prompting him to switch places with Doflamingo, giving Luffy a chance to attack Doflamingo]]]]
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Towards ''everyone'' at some point, but the standout example would have to be the Mermaid Princess, Shirahoshi.
* InstantArmor: One of the many people who can do this using Armament Haki, which turns any affected area of the body black and makes it much, much harder. It can also be used offensively (as the harder body makes for a harder hit) and Luffy is particularly skilled at this type of Haki, able to easily break through most of his opponents' defenses with it.
* IronicHell: Inverted: Luffy ended up going to [[LadyLand Amazon Lily]], whose leader is the WorldsMostBeautifulWoman Boa Hancock. The natives end up worshipping him as much as they do their leader, and said leader Luffy ends up seeing ''naked''. ''Twice''. To top it all off, thanks to his kind nature, Hancock ends up ''falling in love with him''. If it had been anyone else in this situation, they'd be praising the gods and living it up. However, not only is Luffy an IdiotHero, he's also a ''ChasteHero'', making all of this an ironic ''heaven''.
* {{Irony}}: After all the times when he refused to give in until a person he was trying to recruit joined his crew, he finds himself being forced to take on 5640 followers who wish to serve him.
* IThoughtItWasForbidden: Even though Gear Second reduces his overall lifespan, he tends to use it more and more often, to the point at which he resorts to it for most of his major fights since Enies Lobby.

* LeeroyJenkins: Does this whenever he's NOT trapped somewhere and can't fight, but the most notable straight example was at the beginning of the assault on Enies Lobby, where he actually took off full speed into the heart of Enies Lobby during the middle of planning, causing his allies to nearly be wiped out.
* LethalChef: ''Don't ever let him near a kitchen''. His attempt at cooking in chapter 824 resulted in the stove exploding since he forgot to turn it off. What he cooked was a complete mess of a "curry" made from jam, uncooked rice, fishbones and God knows what else that brought tears to everyone and that ''not even he could stomach''. And he messed up so often while making it that he blew the entire group's week's worth of food in one go.
* LethalJokeCharacter:
** Compared to the likes of Pyromancy, immunity to sword slashes, nullifying other Devil Fruit powers, and [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking turning into a giraffe]], stretchy limbs seems relatively low tier. That said, he makes it work. WordOfGod says that such an ability was chosen to keep some levity even in the most intense fights.
** His latest SuperMode relies on his BalloonBelly feature. It inflates his body with so much air, he can't even stand still due to the bounciness. Even his opponent called it ridiculous. [[spoiler: Until he got sent flying to the other end of the island in a single punch.]]
* LightningBruiser: Possibly the fastest and most agile member of his crew, he also has incredible durability and strength. WordOfGod is that only Zoro matches his physical power.
* LikeFatherLikeSon: While not spending any of his childhood with his father, he has nonetheless taken after him with his will and dangerous unpredictability, and both are stakes in the World Government's side.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: Luffy is generally ignorant of global affairs, but most of the Straw Hats are young and mostly unfamiliar with the places they visit, which often gets them into trouble. However, this is especially true of Luffy, who's known to jump in headfirst without knowing or caring about the situation. During the TimeSkip, Luffy's training made him completely unaware of the major events taking place, some of which even involved his allies and his greatest enemies. These include: [[spoiler:The massive bounty increases of his Supernova rivals; His own bounty increase; The vacated Warlord positions being filled, notably by Buggy and Law; His grandfather leaving active duty in the Marines; The duel between Aokiji and Akainu for the Fleet Admiral of the Marines position; The war between the Blackbeard Pirates and the remainder of the Whitebeard Pirates, which led to Marco's disappearance and Blackbeard's ascension to Emperor status]]. One wonders if Rayleigh had intentionally prevented such news from reaching him (''especially'' the truth about Kuma and his agenda). Even Jinbe remarked on how harsh it was for Rayleigh to not tell Luffy about these things.

* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: He begins his then [[PiratesWhoDontDoAnything "pirate"]] career by beating up ''four'' officially wanted pirates, (Alvida, Buggy the Clown, Don Krieg, and Arlong) dangerous by the standards of East Blue, and rather than giving him thanks (and the posted reward) for doing so, the Marines go and slap a $ 30 million bounty on him, and continue to antagonize him at every opportunity, raising his bounty if he so much as complains, let alone defends himself, up to and including threatening members of his crew, and framing him for attempted murder. * NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: Pre-TimeSkip he was subjected to a number of these. Post, he's been handing them out with impunity, beating the crap out of Hody Jones with only one major wound (and Jones only managed to land it because Luffy was underwater, had his movements restrained by a ''bubble'', and trying to prevent a ColonyDrop from destroying Fishman Island). Caesar Clown similarly got his ass kicked without even managing to land a ''single'' hit on Luffy.

* NotAfraidToDie: Luffy has no fear of death at all. This is a trait shared by every D. carrier shown thus far ([[spoiler:save for Marshall D. Teach aka Blackbeard]]). Smoker, who witnessed Gol D. Roger's execution, saw how close Luffy was to meeting his own end on the same scaffold before his miraculous survival, made it his utmost priority to capture Luffy.
* NotSoHarmless: His [[spoiler:Gear Fourth]] may look ridiculous, but [[spoiler:it's shown to be the most powerful ability he has yet. Doflamingo learned this the hard way.]]
* NotTheFallThatKillsYou: Luffy cannot die from a fall, no matter how high he drops from.
* NumberOneDime: His trademark straw hat is a gift from his idol Shanks, and he treasures it to the point where if he gives it to someone else, it's really saying something. * OnlyICanKillHim: Not so much kill, but it's pretty obvious there are opponents that only Luffy has the power to defeat. Eneru was a [[ShockAndAwe notable example]]. His crew members even point out that Luffy seems to have a knack for singling out the single most dangerous opponent in a group that the rest would have no chance against.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Luffy is loud and proud and gives nary a damn if you tell him to clam up. For this exact reason, if he is ''ever'' deathly quiet for ''any'' reason, it's a sign that a fine line has been crossed and ''you want to be '''anywhere''' other than '''there'''.''
** If '''he''' tells you to run, you'd do well to listen to him. It's a legitimate GodzillaThreshold moment.

** When Luffy started his pirate career in East Blue, he was an out-context foe for both pirates and the marines. Devil Fruits in the Blues are so rare that they are often believed to be mere myth and those who do have powers are seen as demons and monsters. So when Luffy, a rubber man, came along able to deflect bullets and absorb blunt blows without taking any damage, most of his early enemies didn't know what to do except for Buggy and Arlong, both who sailed the Grand Line where Devil Fruit users are more common. Buggy also have the extra benefice of being a Devil Fruit users who contrast Luffy's powers.
** Luffy does it again during his battle against Eneru. Before Eneru met Luffy, he was completely unbeatable and most of his fights ended in a curb stomp. That is because Eneru had the Rumble Rumble Fruit that made him into living lightning. The fruit is so powerful that it is classified as unbeatable. However, since Luffy is a rubber man, he is completely immune to lightning. Even better, rubber doesn't even exist on Skypiea, so Luffy is also an out of context material. Eneru literally had no clue that a foe like Luffy could exist. The face he makes when he realizes that Luffy isn't affected by his powers is priceless.
* PapaWolf: Hurt one of his [[TrueCompanions crew]] – or for that matter, one of your own – and you are '''dead'''.
* PaperThinDisguise: As "Lucy", which is really just him with an old-man beard and shades. Later, he takes off the shades for a gladiator helmet. [[spoiler:However, this worked in his favor as it was more than enough to fool Doflamingo, when he switched out for Sabo to take his place]].
* ParentalAbandonment: While not an integral part of his character, his father willingly left him to go help the rest of the world, his mother hasn't even been mentioned, and his Grandpa made no attempt to at least have him raised near him. Luckily, though, his foster mother and brothers made up for this void, and the only time he ever showed sadness over being lonely was in childhood before meeting Ace.
* PersonalityPowers: Oda commented in an SBS that he gives his hero RubberMan powers to reflect his fun, carefree and out-there personality, as well as to make a contrast to the more "serious" shonen heroes.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: The full extent of Luffy's strength post-TimeSkip hasn't been shown, but considering that he and [[spoiler:fellow Supernova Law]] are presumably on the same level, Luffy will eventually become this if he hasn't already.
** Pre-TimeSkip, Luffy delt some pretty amazing feats of damage even before he had discovered Haki or his gear abilities. In the anime Luffy's gum gum attacks combined with his [[CharlesAtlasSuperpower super strength]] enabled him to TOPPLE WARSHIPS with his bear hands. e.i. ripping the bow off a ship in order to use as an impromptu weapon [[spoiler:albeit while under strengthening hypnosis]], drop kick and sink a tooled up battleship with ease, rend the mast off another ship and impale it upon a monstrously huge whale and to date one of his most horrendous feats of grit and strength; caused the massive upheaval between a deep cavernous temple all the way to the surface city plaza by rapid punching somebody through countless layers of bedrock all the way through to its surface!
** Pre-TimeSkip, he destroyed the top half of the Tower of Justice with two uses of Gear Third (the first made the Tower shake a little...and that was just by knocking a massive steel door down). As for after the TimeSkip, he nearly destroyed the massive ship Noah by using his most powerful attack. Keep in mind that Noah was in collision course with Fishman Island and worked have almost certainly destroyed it were it not for the Sea Kings who stopped it, who themselves remarked on how powerful Luffy is.
** [[spoiler:Gear Fourth Luffy. His most powerful attack in that form split an entire ''city'' into two slabs and forced them upwards into the air. It'd be damn hard to argue it now]].
* PintsizedPowerhouse: While he's not overly short by RealLife standards, he tends to be rather puny in comparison to most of his opponents. He's 5'8", while his opponents range from above 6' to being freaking giants (literally!). Regardless, the large size disparity seems to make no difference for him; He's able to smack around a Pacifista (Cyborgs who are all about 22'6" feet tall) just as easily as he can smack around somebody like, say, Captain Kuro (an average sized human being).
** One of the best examples after the TimeSkip is when he took on a giant (who appeared to be at least 70 feet tall) during the tournament at Dressrosa; he completely knocked him unconscious with a ''single punch''.
* PipePain: When he was a child, he would use a metal pipe to fight since he wasn't very skilled with his powers at the time.
* ThePiratesWhoDontDoAnything: Luffy's not interested in the typical "pillaging and raping" pirate activities, but rather became a pirate for the sake of adventure. He fights with other pirates and the marines freely, but leaves civilians alone. Also, though he doesn't have any explicitly stated moral codes, he does lean towards only recruiting crew members who share his ideals on what it means to be a pirate.
** In the Romance Dawn pilot, he says the Morgania pirates are the ones who pillage and rape, while Peace Mains fight Morgania pirates and look for adventure. He is, of course, the latter.
** Though he does cause lots of property damage, and he's not opposed to stealing available loot if an opportunity arises. Then there was that prison break...
* PlotArmor: Lampshaded by Basil Hawkins. He tried several times to calculate a scenario which Luffy couldn't possibly survive, but Luffy always had at least a slim chance.
* PocketProtector: In the ''Adeventure of Nebulandia'' Foxy gives him a pin shaped like his (Foxy's) own head, and Luffy puts it on his hat; so naturally, it ends up catching a bullet for him later. The bullet in question appeared to be a more modern, cone shaped round that may have been capable of penetrating him; so, as the BigBad of the special Lampshaded, Luffy really does have the Devil's luck.
* ThePowerOfFriendship: He always believes in his crew, even when they appear to betray or murder one of their own.
* ThePowerOfLove: At least half of everything Luffy has ever done in the series is driven out of the intense love he has for his crew. While undoubtedly selfish, there isn't anything in the world Luffy wouldn't do for their sake.
* PowerOfTrust: Luffy is an ''excellent'' judge of character, successfully allying even with former enemies, both as permanent crewmates (Nico Robin, Franky) and as temporary allies (various other members of Baroque Works). It will be put to the ultimate test with his alliance with rival supernova captain-turned-Warlord Trafalgar Law (And it pays off. Law, despite his desire to end Doflamingo, moved to protect Luffy's crew).
* PowerPerversionPotential: Yes, everything stretches, as the inhabitants of [[LadyLand Amazon Lily]] discovered.

** He made one with Ace and Sabo when they were children to go out to sea and live their lives free of regrets. After Sabo's [[spoiler:supposed]] death, Ace promised him that he would never die and leave Luffy alone. [[spoiler:He was only able to keep the former, and even then, he admits there was one regret that he did have: he wouldn't able to see Luffy accomplish his dream. However, unbeknown to both of them at the time, Ace ''didn't'' leave Luffy alone in this world -- Sabo still lived, and made a promise to himself to inherit Ace's will and protect Luffy at any cost]].
** Not to mention the one with Shanks, that he'd return his Straw Hat to him one day after he became a great pirate. [[spoiler:It is for this promise, Shanks refuses to see the injured Luffy at Maineford, as Luffy hadn't reached that level yet.]]

** Discussed during his fight with Rob Lucci. Gear Second was stated as a technique made by and only for RubberMan, as normal human body couldn't withstand the increased metabolism, blood flow and strain.
* RightMakesMight: If one has a strong ambition, one will always prevail in the end.
* RubberHoseLimbs: Very much justified.
* RubberMan: Thanks to consuming the Gum-Gum Fruit, and he refers to himself as this in exact words. He's more literally rubber than most examples, too. He can't stretch himself without momentum, and when he does, he snaps back into place like real rubber. His powers come with certain bonuses; his clothes automatically stretch with him, it takes incredible force to hurt him with blunt attacks without [[KiManipulation haki]], bullets and cannon balls bounce off of him, he's highly resistent to electricity, his rubber bones can't be broken or cracked, and he rarely gets winded because his rubber heart and lungs pump more efficiently. Other characters comment that his power is "weird" even by Devil Fruit standards.
* RuleOfSymbolism: [[spoiler:Curiously, Gear Fourth: Boundman. In that form, Luffy just happens to resemble a rubber version of a [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nio Kongorikishi]], a wrathful, protector guardian deity in Japanese Buddhism]].

* SecretLegacy: The mysterious "Will of D." that several characters have mentioned. Goes a bit further when [[spoiler:he's revealed to have Roger's hat and can hear the voices of Sea Kings like the man himself could.]]
* SharedFamilyQuirks: Even before Garp was revealed as Luffy's grandfather, they both showed a BunnyEarsLawyer mentality, being more concerned with eating most of the time, often being absent-minded and a tendency to randomly fall asleep.
* ShootingSuperman: Marines seem to ''love'' firing their guns and cannons at him despite the fact that they ''bounce right off and back at them'' every time. Especially jarring since you'd think that by now it'd be common knowledge that Luffy- a world famous pirate and most definitely one of the government's number one targets- is immune to normal firearms.
** However, before he learned Haki, Luffy himself was guilty of this a few times. He had a tendency to charge headfirst into fights with [[{{Intangibility}} Logia users]] even after it was clear he couldn't touch them. His very first fight against Crocodile comes to mind, where he spends five minutes punching him to no avail only to get impaled on a hook for his troubles.
* ShowyInvincibleHero: Luffy earned the record-breaking bounty of 30 million belli for a rookie in East Blue where he won all his fights. [[{{Badass}} Smoker]] being an odd exception to the rule. And the East Blue Saga covered a hundred manga chapters! Even in the early parts of his adventure in the Grand Line, Luffy’s win record continued and it seemed like [[{{Determinator}} nothing]] [[InvincibleHero could stop him]] [[ToBeAMaster until he reached his goal]]. But then it was [[SubvertedTrope subverted]]. [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown Repeatedly]]. [[BreakTheCutie And hard]].
** A more downplayed version appears post-TimeSkip. Every fight Luffy had for the first three arcs were complete [[CurbStompBattle curb-stomp battles]] with him on the giving end, and he ''literally'' did not have a serious fight until the Dressrosa arc, [[spoiler:and it was against an old, legendary pirate who used to fight with his ''grandpa'' back in the day, quickly followed by Donquixote Doflamingo, one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea]]. It's downplayed because in spite of this, both the audience and Luffy himself are well aware that he's still got a long way to go before he reaches his dream, and that it only gets harder from here on out.
** It's worth noting that said pirate, while incredibly strong, was long past his prime as he later admits, and that Luffy is taking on Doflamingo with the help of Trafalgar Law, and it is still proving to be possibly his toughest yet.
* ShutUpHannibal: Has done this numerous times against the [[BigBad Big Bads of the current arc]]. Prominent examples include against Arlong, Crocodile, Bellamy, Spandam, Caesar Clown and [[spoiler:Doflamingo]].
* SignatureMove: The Gum-Gum Pistol, Bazooka, Gatling, and Balloon are his 4 most iconic moves, although he typically uses their gear 2nd versions now.
* SinsOfOurFathers: Luffy's first and greatest crime was being born into the world, for his father is the world-renowned criminal "The Revolutionary" Monkey D. Dragon; a predicament similar to that of his adopted brother Ace, their existences ''alone'' being sins in the eyes of the world. Unlike Ace, however, his parentage doesn't really bother him all that much -- partially because stuff like that never mattered to Luffy, and partially because Luffy didn't know he even ''had'' a father until he was seventeen. He also kind of suffers this under the fact that his grandfather is Garp, and at least one pirate, Don Chinjao, has a vendetta against the old guy and considers having it at Luffy is enough for revenge.
* SmartBall: While some of the times he's right are the result of his [[CloudCuckoolander bizarre]] or [[DumbassHasAPoint poorly thought out]] guesses being correct, there are times when he's more reasonable than usual, such as when he tells Vivi that people will die no matter what she does, and defeating Crocodile, rather than intercepting the rebels, is the surest way to stop the rebellion.
* SpannerInTheWorks: Quite possibly the greatest version of this trope. Ever. Without going into detail, let's just say that most of the arcs, movies, and video games involve him entering the scene and completely ruining the villain's plans right when they're about to be finished. Every time.
** More often than not, he never even went in intending to stop the villain or knowing the villain even had an evil plan. He is literally just an unexpected variable that happened to mess up the scheme because the villain did just ONE thing wrong. That thing is usually trying to preemptively eliminate him.
** Reversed with Blackbeard's master plan. Everything Luffy did just worked in favor of Blackbeard's plans, even speeding them up significantly, the most obvious example being the Impel Down incident.
** [[spoiler:Doflamingo]] attempted to take advantage of these tendencies in order to screw up Law's plan. He correctly deduced that [[spoiler:Luffy would immediately be sidetracked by a tournament to win the Mera Mera no Mi, most likely to ensure that his brother's power did not end up in the wrong hands. It would've worked, but it backfired magnificently when it created another Spanner to screw up his plans: Sabo, who takes Luffy's place in the colosseum in order to the win Mera Mera no Mi, being perhaps the ''only'' person outside of his own crew that Luffy would allow to take its power. This can be largely blamed on Doflamingo, as the tournament was most likely the main reason Sabo was in Dressrosa in the first place]]. It's at this point you can honestly say that anything even ''remotely'' related to Luffy has the potential to be this for ''any'' villain.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: He's known as Ruffy in some foreign editions, most notably the German translation.
* SpiderSense: He's one of the many people with Observation Haki, an innate power that allows him to sense imminent danger, see people's "auras" (outline) through walls, and hear the voices of any living creatures around him for at least several miles.
* StockShonenHero: The TropeCodifier of the "new generation" of Shonen heroes of this type alongside Manga/{{Naruto}}. Luffy is pretty much ''the'' IdiotHero and a LeeroyJenkins of a caliber so major that the rest of the cast tolerate him only because he is very good at fighting and TheHeart of the crew. Still, the only time so far that his incredible drive to keep on fighting and his on-the-spot inventiveness failed him was during the Marineford arc, which was a massive WhamEpisode.
* StraightManAndWiseGuy: The Wise Guy to Law's Straight Man. [[spoiler: They go on a great tear in 748, with Cavendish and Zoro in the middle of it all.]] Also, more commonly, the wise guy for ''the entire crew's'' straight man (but most notably Nami or Usopp).
* SuperDrowningSkills: The most common victim of the Devil Fruit users in his crew. Of course, he couldn't swim even before getting his Devil Fruit powers, hence why Shanks's crew nicknamed him "Anchor".
* SuperGullible: He is the only one besides Chopper who is gullible enough to fall for Usopp's Sogeking disguise.
* SuperMode: He has a few of these techniques, which he dubs "Gears";
** [[LightningBruiser Gear Second]] is achieved by him pumping his blood with his leg (pre-timeskip) or just by yanking up his limb hard enough (post-timeskip) to highly increase blood flow and metabolism, giving him a glowing pinkish appearance and hot steam coming out of his body; this increases his strength and speed to dramatic levels, at the cost of his lifespan (because his organs work multiple times harder than normal), although this drawback is minimized post-timeskip.
** [[MightyGlacier Gear Third]] is achieved by him blowing air into his bone hole (after biting his finger first). This gives him hardened bone structure (to the point that bullets ricochet off him as opposed to bounce away) as well as enlarged limbs, but this makes him move slower, and he becomes SuperDeformed and weak for a minute after the mode stops. Post timeskip the drawbacks has been minimized; now he can keep the air insides his bones in only the places where he needs it, making him more flexible.
** At long last, we have Luffy's first ever actual ''transformation'': [[spoiler: Gear Fourth, Boundman. Boundman basically turns him into a rubber version of a [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nio fighting deity]]. He uses the full potential of his body's elasticity here, and combines it with his Armament Haki, retracting his limbs to launch them with absolute force, fly, ''remotely guide his punches'', and increasing his durability to new levels.]] He developed this state in order to continuously fight the powerful beasts in Rusukaina, the island he trained during the 2-year TimeSkip.
* SuperToughness: His rubber body nullifies all but the most powerful blunt blows (though Haki-imbued attacks strike him as if he were normal). One of the best examples is what he endured facing [[BigBad Crocodile]]. He was stabbed with a giant hook, drained of all the fluid in his body, poisoned, cut by Crocodile's extremely sharp [[DishingOutDirt sand]], and physically beaten all over the course of 24 hours; yet he survived with just some bruises and cuts. However, though his toughness is certainly partially from his Devil Fruit, knowing [[CharlesAtlasSuperpower Luffy]] it's ''highly'' likely he'd be MadeOfIron even without it.
* SuperpoweredEvilSide: Subverted with Nightmare Luffy. He's a scary, giant, evil-looking [[Comicbook/IncredibleHulk Hulk-like]] figure, and Nami and Usopp were initially afraid of him, but he's actually still Luffy on the inside. Just REALLY serious. However, that could be something to do with shadows inside him, since Usopp and Nami noticed he behaves differently.
* SuperpowerLottery: No, really. When you actually look at all the different ways Luffy is able to use his Devil Fruit, it's quite possible that the Gum Gum Fruit might actually be one of the strongest of the Paramecia class, or at least ''the'' most versatile of the bunch. True, his own creativity is a huge reason for that, but [[spoiler: the sheer fact that he was able to develop a technique as insanely strong as Gear Fourth due to the fruit's powers shows that it's nothing to scoff at]]. HeartIsAnAwesomePower, indeed.
* TakingTheHeat: By telling spoiler:Big Mom ''he'' was the one to ruin her candy factory and ate all her candy, he earned her rage, which would have gone to destroying Fishman Island. It was a lie and Big Mom suspects as much but won't try to disprove him.
* TastesLikeFriendship: Although his friendship with them grew for different reasons over time, it only took Nami and Rebecca some food for him to instantly start to like them.
* TearsOfJoy: Can only burst into tears [[spoiler:when, in chapter 731, Sabo reveals he is alive.]]
* TerribleArtist: Luffy attempted to paint his logo on the ''Going Merry''. The rest of the crew hated it so much they had Usopp paint over it. Later, he successfully paints his logo on Laboon. It looks as competent as you'd expect for this trope.
* ThanksForTheMammary: Luffy accidentally gropes Boa Hancock when he was hiding under her dress since how he was latched onto her kept her from walking straight. The act certainly affects Hancock, but she was forced to hold up her facade in front of the Marines.
** Taken UpToEleven when he's catapulted into the room (and chest) of Princess Shirahoshi... who is one of One Piece's giant characters. Before he realized it, he thought that he's standing on a giant pudding.
* ThirdTimesTheCharm: Against Crocodile, though there is a case to be had in his confrontations with Eneru and Rob Lucci.
** It takes him ''four'' separate rounds with Doflamingo before he finally beats him.
* TimeToUnlockMoreTruePotential: By the end of the first half of the series, approx. time around the Sabaody Arc, his skills and power are simply no longer enough to beat anybody or anything stronger than a single Pacifista (with the support of his entire team at that...). : Thankfully, he got better and after two years of training, he can now also defeat a Pacifista in a single hit (along with a giant Kraken, for that matter...).
* TiredOfRunning: In Chapter 798 [[spoiler:he takes on Admiral Fujitora instead of escaping as he's tired of having run for two years and that he'll need to face the Admirals and Emperors if he wants to become the Pirate King]].
* TooDumbToLive: Indeed. He would have been killed many times if not for incredible strokes of luck and allies who are willing to save his ass. In some less dangerous situations he knows what he does, but his problem is that he basically has no fears and fails to recognize true danger.
* TookALevelInBadass: BIG TIME during the TimeSkip. To the point that he hasn't had a real challenging fight since the TimeSkip ended until the Dressrosa arc.
* TopHeavyGuy: [[spoiler: When he activates his Gear Fourth.]] He also appears like this when using Gum Gum Balloon.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Meat. Any kind of meat (Although he's not as fond of seafood, as revealed by the Fishman Island arc). Eating it even makes him stronger, and if he's not fighting or playing, he's always seen eating meat. To the point that, in a crossover with {{Toriko}}, when he orders a 3 course meal, ALL of them consists of meat. Even the ''drinks.''
* TranquilFury: If you piss him off enough to make him enter this mode, you're screwed. Luffy usually starts his fights in UnstoppableRage mode, and finishes them in TranquilFury mode, when his enemy has really pissed him off.
* TrainingFromHell: Went through this in childhood. It involved being thrown into jungles at night and tied to balloons, apparently.
* TraumaCongaLine: [[spoiler:The Paramount War is one HUGE BreakTheCutie moment for our hero, starts during the Sabaody arc, gets many times worse in [[TheAlcatraz Impel Down]], AND he finally rescues his brother only for that brother to lose his life protecting him, he is VERY LUCKY that he is able to return to being himself.]]
* ThroughHisStomach: A surefire way to get Luffy to be your best friend.
* TrouserSpace: Where he keeps the "octopus"...
* {{Ubermensch}}: Luffy refuses to follow the typical code of pirates, a code that revolves around pirating for treasure rather than your dreams, and does not harm civilians and steal. On one occasion, this even got him ridiculed and beaten, but he still stands strong by his beliefs.
** If Luffy wasn't an inherently nice and friendly guy, he'd be a brutal villain, as he follows no rules but the ones he creates and refuses to be swayed by words.
* TheUnfettered: The reason he's gotten as far as he has- his inability to hold back or restrain himself, is one of his most defining traits. His only fetter is his loved ones, especially his crew and the closest family to him.
* UnskilledButStrong:
** Initially with regards to Haki; he starts out only being able to make people submit to his power, and only during the TimeSkip does he learn how to use its forms.
** Also, this is what many villains told him InUniverse during the Marineford Saga in regards to his abilities in general. His physical power and natural talent for combat was right up there with the best as usual, but... a combination of not having any sort of hardening or observation Haki at all, no knowledge of when they were being used against him, fighting against people even stronger and faster than he was, and most importantly, fighting against people who could actually ''negate'' his strongest attacks (such as [[PoisonousPerson Magellan]]) for the first time led to a long line of defeats. Thankfully, he's gotten better.
* UnstoppableRage: On Enies Lobby, the soldiers were literally being sent flying by the hundreds from the moment Luffy got there, and it wasn't over until 3000 had been defeated and he had made his point -- shit was getting serious.
** He switches into this mode fairly frequently at the climax of his battles every arc.
* WaistcoatOfStyle: Until the TimeSkip.
* WardrobeWound: Most of the damage he incurs is of this variety.
* WhenAllYouHaveIsAHammer: Most of the situations he's gotten into have been solved through liberal use of punching the right guy ''in the face''. Prior to Marineford, it's typically his ''only'' strategy, many times literally just asking whose ass he has to kick.
** It's fitting, as one of his stronger techniques is also called Gum Gum Mallet and Gum Gum Giant Mallet, which both mean hammer.
* WildCard: As the Captain of the Straw Hats, an entire crew of WildCards themselves due to the mangling of the power balance they've done over the past two years, he is one himself. Hell, considering his reputation for being a SpannerInTheWorks and his general [[CloudCuckooLander unpredictability]], he counts greatly. Sometimes he's unpredictable even to his own crew.
* WithMyHandsTied: He one-shoted Vander Decken with his arms chained.
* WorldsStrongestMan: Not ''yet'', but his dream is to become King of the Pirates, which by default means wanting to become this.
* WorthLivingFor: [[spoiler:After Ace's death]], the only reason Luffy found the resolve to keep on living was because of his crew and the fact that [[spoiler:Ace]] would've wanted him to live and move on. Otherwise, Luffy would've probably turned into a DeathSeeker, a clear indication of just how ''bad'' his HeroicBSOD was.
* WorthyOpponent: Smoker. This has become especially apparent when Smoker was willing to transfer into the ''worst'' marine base on the Grand Line, just so he could wait for Luffy in the New World. He waited ''two years'' for someone that the world thought dead, because he knew that Luffy would return to the sea sooner or later. Luffy sees him this way as well, as when [[FreakyFridayFlip Smoker was stuck in Tashigi's body]] Luffy refused to fight him until he was at full strength.
* WouldHitAGirl: Examples include Alvida, Ms. Valentine's Day, Vivi (as Ms. Wednesday and later in a GetAHoldOfYourselfMan), Boa Marigold and Sandersonia. Of course, the women he occasionally fights are all dangerous, and it wouldn't be wise to go easy on them.
* XMarksTheHero: He got an X-shaped scar across his chest from Akainu's attack at Marineford.
* YouAreNotAlone: After his [[spoiler:HeroicBSOD he suffered from Ace's death, he finally comes out of it when he is reminded he still has his crew who still need him and he needs them.]]
