Since the movie is the beginning of G5, I doubt spoilers are necessary for Sprout's actions therein anymore.

* CorruptedCharacterCopy: Sprout superficially resembles Big Macintosh from the previous generation, as an earth pony with a red coat, light brown mane, and green eyes. Unlike the mature, hardworking, and shy Big Mac, however, Sprout is bad-tempered, lazy, and likes the sound of his own voice.
* DemotedToExtra: Ever since the movie, he mainly made cameo and background appearances and only occasionally returned for some supporting roles in ''Make Your Mark'' and has yet to make a single appearance in ''Tell Your Tale''.

* DirtyCoward: Would rather run and laze about than face any (perceived) real danger. He literally puts himself in one of his mom's Unicorn traps just to avoid having to follow Hitch in chasing after Sunny and Izzy, runs away to 'get reinforcements' after Izzy comes out and makes him believe she is reading his mind (she isn't) during the standoff at the lighthouse, and later in the film messes up his own desk ''right in front of Hitch'' to excuse himself from following him to track them down by claiming he needs to 'tidy up' his own space. The only time he doesn't display any cowardice is when he is having a [[DrunkWithPower power-trip]] and [[spoiler:piloting a giant war machine against the perceived threat]].

** After Sprout becomes DrunkWithPower and [[spoiler:dresses as TheGeneralissimo]], he still needs a raised step to reach a microphone. And when a flag with his face drops down from above, it completely covers him, necessitating him to squirm his way out from underneath it and ruining his big moment.
** The first thing he does when he gets into and activates his [[spoiler:giant war machine]]? Pull a wire and ''honk'' it like he's a glorified truck driver.

* TookALevelInKindness: He makes several appearances in the series as a background character but doesn't demonstrate any of his negative traits, except boasting, and while his out-of-control Earth pony magic did create problems, he clearly did not intend to cause any harm.

* EntitledBitch: The end of the special has her claim that now that magic has returned, it's time to "take back what is mine", implying she feels she's entitled to magic itself. She also makes it very clear that she believes that alicorns are inherently better than normal ponies and should be the ''only'' wielders of powerful magic. Opaline also fully expects Misty to do anything for her.

* {{Jerkass}}: She is racist toward Pegasi and Earth Ponies, ''Sunny Starscout's Book of Adventure'' stating she doesn't think better of unicorns. She treats Misty awfully, no matter how nice the poor kid is to her. In "Nightmare Night Party", she also states she enjoys ruining parties.

A villainous winged snow leopard who has enslaved the Auroricorns of Starlight Ridge into doing her biding.
----
* AmazingTechnicolorWildlife: She looks like a snow leopard with purple fur.
* ContrastingSequelAntagonist: To Opaline Arcana. Oplaine was a bombastic [[PlayingWithFire fire alicorn]] who [[BadBoss treated Misty like dirt]] and cared about no one but herself. Allura is more subdued, associated with [[AnIcePerson ice and cold]], treats her subordinate Twitch with far more care, and is motivated by [[spoiler:her desire to reunite with her brother]].
* AnIcePerson: [[spoiler:She can reduce the temperature and freeze the ground and plantlife, creating a localized winter in her immediate environment. This power had no visible effect in Starlight Ridge which is naturally a snowy, boreal location, but manifests clearly in the more temperate Equestrian climate.]]
* CatsAreMean: She's a winged snow leopard who enslaved the ponies of Starlight Ridge. That's about as mean as you can get.
* CompellingVoice: Allura can use her purring to hypnotize others, and the only thing capable of counteracting it is [[spoiler:the magical snow that falls around the town of Starlight Ridge]].
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes:
** [[spoiler:It's implied that the main reason she's doing what she's doing is because of her brother, who mysteriously speaks to her as a disembodied voice near the end of the special.]]
** She genuinely values and cares for Twitch. Phyllis' son, Sprout is the deputy sheriff of Maretime Bay. While initially a young stallion with big dreams but not much motivation, things change when Hitch leaves Maretime Bay in pursuit of Sunny and Izzy, leaving him to step into the role as the temporary sheriff of Maretime Bay...
----
* AllThereInTheScript: The film's dialogue only refers to him as Sprout. His second name -- Cloverleaf -- is given in the toyline and some other supplementary material.
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: He resents Hitch for being better looking and more well-liked by the townsponies than he is.
* AngryEyebrows: Most of the early film has him moping about with a deadpan expression nicely accented by his brows.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Sprout is a bully, a coward, and an idiot -- one who resents being under the shadow of his more competent, heroic, and popular superior Sheriff Hitch. But no sooner is Sprout made temporary sheriff of Maretime Bay than he quickly becomes DrunkWithPower, taking over the town as a rabble-rousing dictator and having the workers at Canterlogic build a giant war machine in preparation for a conflict with their Unicorn and Pegasi 'enemies', becoming a serious threat and the final obstacle standing in the way of the heroes' quest to bring back magic to Equestria, quite literally piloting a jury-rigged giant war machine against the heroes at the climax of the film.
* BigotWithABadge: He's an already prejudiced town policeman, but we only get to see how bigoted he truly is once he gets appointed Sheriff.
* TheBusCameBack: He's absent for the ''Make Your Mark'' special, but returns for an episode in Chapter 2 where he's [[KarmaHoudiniWarranty doing community service]]. He also plays a supporting role in the Chapter 4 episode "Top Remodel".
* ButtMonkey: His idiocy and incompetence cause him to keep embarrassing himself, and this doesn't change even when he becomes the film's main antagonist.
* TheCameo:
** His face is [[FreezeFrameBonus briefly]] seen on a wanted poster in the ''Tell Your Tale'' shorts "Nightmare Roommate" and "Foal Me Once".
** He's seen briefly at the start of ''Winter Wishday'' where he's seen decorating the town hall with two others. Perhaps he finally made some real friends?
* CorruptedCharacterCopy: Sprout superficially resembles Big Macintosh from the previous generation, as an earth pony with a red coat, light brown mane, and green eyes. Unlike the mature, hardworking, and shy Big Mac, however, Sprout is bad-tempered, lazy, and likes the sound of his own voice.
* DemotedToExtra: Ever since the movie, he mainly made cameo and background appearances and only occasionally returned for some supporting roles in ''Make Your Mark'' and has yet to make a single appearance in ''Tell Your Tale''.
* DramaticIrony: ''Make Your Mark'' reveals he has a very strong magical ability with GreenThumb magic, despite his earlier crusade against the other pony species having it.
* DirtyCop: Deputy sheriff of Maretime Bay, and a corrupt idiot.
* DisappearedDad: His father is never seen or mentioned.
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: Sprout is a nobody who suddenly becomes quite dangerous during a (perceived) crisis by rousing the fear, anger, and hatred of those around him for those not of their kind, uses his given (temporary) authority to establish a dictatorship and has his subordinates build weapons in preparation for a war with those others they fear and hate out of paranoia that their 'enemies' are plotting to destroy them all, all the while abusing his authority and being an absolute egomaniac. This mirrors the rise to power of many real-life dictators. More specifically, Sprout's usage of nationalistic rhetoric and the fact that he was brought into power by business to quell public dissent parallels the Marxist reading of the rise of fascism (due to their broader anti-capitalist beliefs, communists tend to emphasize capitalist support of fascist leaders and portray them as either puppets of the rich, or monsters created by them that later went rogue).
* DramaticallyMissingThePoint:
** When Queen Haven tries to tell him the pegasi and unicorns aren't looking for a fight, Sprout replies that he's not going to accept their "surrender".
** Similarly, when he's told that the unicorns and pegasi don't even have any magic, his response is to say that now it's gonna be so much easier to take them out.
* DrunkWithPower: Less than a few days substituting Hitch as the town's sheriff while he goes after Sunny and Izzy and he's already gone full-blown dictator, complete with an earth pony-style generalissimo uniform and cap.
* EasilyForgiven: In "Growing Pains", Sunny and Hitch have no problem engaging in conversation with him. While they find him exasperating, they clearly hold no ill will toward him. Given he's stuck doing community service, they presumably feel he's being punished appropriately and have no need to pile on.
* TheEmperor: Sprout flat-out declares himself this for Maretime Bay as his [[DrunkWithPower power-trip]] descents into full-blown egomania. His reign naturally doesn't last.
* EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas: Even at [[DrunkWithPower his worst]], Sprout still loves his mother, desperately seeking her approval and driving his machine away from Phyllis when she gets in the way, both of which cause what HeelRealization he has. He is last seen asking his mom sincerely whether or not he was a good sheriff and was left annoyed and despondent when his mother [[LookBehindYou avoids the question]].
* EvilCounterpart: He's Hitch, albeit without his bravery, tolerance, or morals.
* EvilEyebrows: It may be his color scheme that makes them stand out and it's never commented on in-universe, but his eyebrows appear much more prominent than Hitch's and most other stallions in the G5 series, even when he was small. And he is the final villain of the movie.
* EvilLaugh: He gives off a few of them when piloting his giant mech and using it to attack Sunny and her friends at her lighthouse.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: In the opening AMinorKidroduction, as a young Sprout goes home with his mother and Phyllis complains about Sunny's father and his beliefs of inter-tribal unity, little Sprout promises that when he grows up, he would become sheriff and make sure to "keep everypony in line." This hints at his transformation into a rabble-rousing dictator when Hitch leaves him temporarily in charge and he lets his new authority go to his head.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: "Top Remodel" reveals that, even after dropping his xenophobia, he is still the same obnoxious, lazy jerk he always was and the Mane 5 only tolerate him at best.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: From a bigoted, cowardly and idiotic deputy to a rabblerousing, egomaniacal and paranoid [[spoiler:dictator]] within ''days'' of being made temporary sheriff of Maretime Bay.
* TheGeneralissimo: He starts dressing like one after he comes DrunkWithPower, and also acting like one by enforcing strict "no non-earth pony" laws.
* GreenAndMean: His machinations are associated with a bright green color like his eyes.
* GreenEyedMonster: Part of the reason why he becomes so power-hungry is out of jealousy towards Hitch, whom he believes is more attractive and well-respected than he is.
* HeelRealization: After his mother turns on him due to taking her racist rhetoric way too far, he's shown to be as remorseful as the rest of the earth ponies for their actions and dejectedly questions if he was a good sheriff.
* HeroStoleMyBike: Sprout takes a kid's skateboard during his attempt to pursue Sunny to the Canter Logic factory.
* HumongousMecha: He has Canterlogic build the ultimate "anti-unicorn/pegasus' defense system in the form of a giant jury-rigged war machine in the likeliness of an enormous earth pony which he pilots against the heroes and the unicorns and Pegasi that came with them at the climax of the film. He names it "Sprouticous Maximus", [[ItsAllAboutMe after himself]].
* {{Hypocrite}}:
** He complains to his mother about Hitch going solo in his hunt for Sunny and Izzy, despite the fact that he had done everything he could to weasel his way out of joining Hitch.
** Despite his own cowardice, he expresses annoyance when the earth ponies flee rather than fight the unicorns and pegasi.
* InsufferableImbecile: He is a bigoted and cowardly idiot right from the start and [[FromNobodyToNightmare he only gets worse from there]].
* IRejectYourReality: He buys wholeheartedly into the racism and xenophobia that his mother tells him. Even after Sunny and Hitch tell Sprout that non-earth-pony races aren't a threat to Maritime Bay, Sprout won't listen. He takes it so far that even his mother starts thinking he's overdoing it, but Sprout still refuses to see reason. It gets to the point that once he's in charge, Sprout immediately starts setting draconian anti-non-earth-pony laws, building war machines against his perceived "enemies", and intends to destroy Sunny's lighthouse to stop her from restoring the magic of the non-earth-pony races.
* ItsAllAboutMe:
** Sprout starts off as a cowardly idiot who's always in the shadows of his much braver and more competent superior Sheriff Hitch, but once he gets to substitute for Hitch he turns into a grade-A egomaniac who thinks everypony should just bow to his incredible awesomeness and do what he wants. By the time Sunny and Hitch return to Maretime Bay, he's even started naming laws and [[spoiler:a giant robot]] after himself.
** In "Top Remodel", he is insistent that the now-defunct [=CanterLogic=] building still belongs to his family, and by extension, him.
* IWantMyMommy: When [[spoiler:his cutie mark is taken away from him through Opaline's tree in Maretime Bay]], he cries out to his mom to bring it back.
* {{Jerkass}}:
** While chasing Sunny, he grabs a random earth pony's food and drink and eats it.
** A flashback in "Cutie Blossom Bash" shows him refusing to let a filly play with him and his colt friends for no reason other than [[GirlsHaveCooties she was a filly]].
* KarmaHoudiniWarranty:
** ''Tell Your Tale'' implies karma caught up with him. His face can seen on a wanted poster in both the episodes "Nightmare Roomate" and "Foal Me Once". In the latter episode, Hitch mentions he works on his own and needs a new deputy implying Hitch fired Sprout due to his actions in the movie.
** In Chapter 2 of ''Make Your Mark'', he's been reduced to community service.
* LaughablyEvil: While he's the main antagonist, Sprout's actions are also played for comedy.
** Early on, Sprout has a tendency of running into doors or having doors slam on him.
** He's a DirtyCoward that hides in a unicorn trap to avoid having to chase after Izzy. When Hitch and Sprout track down Izzy and Sunny, he wears a hat that supposedly blocks unicorn mind control. And when Izzy comes outside (despite [[GenkiGirl being happy and friendly]]), he runs away, citing that he needs to find backup.
* LethallyStupid: Part of the reason Sprout is as dangerous as he is is that he's an idiot who doesn't think his actions through once he gets enough power to actually be a threat.
* MeaningfulName: A sprout is a plant that has begun to grow, similar to how Sprout has [[ManChild a lot of growing up to do]].
* MommasBoy: Sprout doesn't have one original thought in his head that wasn't put there by his mother and her prejudice. He's also shown to constantly crave her approval for his actions. Even as an adult, he refers to her as "Mommy" as a way of showing how immature he is.
* MoralMyopia: Sprout has grown to dislike Hitch for all his success and prowess, yet he himself seems lost on the fact that his cowardice, laziness, and inability to stop relying on his mother are the main likely culprits to why he can't measure up.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: With his quasi-military position, his greyish dress uniform with a CommissarCap, ChestOfMedals, and SinisterShades, and the fact that he was brought into power by business, he's a very clear UsefulNotes/AugustoPinochet parody. Even Sprout's very nature and background follows Pinochet's in a way; Pinochet was a supposedly loyal officer trusted by then-President Salvador Allende, who found himself drawn into the anti-Allende coup at the last minute. Once Pinochet got a taste of power as part of the military junta, it went straight to his head and he swept aside the junta to establish a brutal autocracy under him alone. Sprout appears to be a loyal subordinate trusted by Hitch, but quickly establishes himself as an all-powerful dictator within days, and eventually fights Hitch and his friends.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: During the first half of the movie, he's a petulant thug and at worst a nuisance to the heroes. Then Hitch makes the mistake of leaving him in charge of Maretime Bay in his absence, and he swiftly [[DrunkWithPower declares himself an 'emperor']], constructs a giant robot, and nearly kills Sunny.
* PsychopathicManchild: He combines a pathological urge for power and acceptance with deep insecurity and emotional dependence on his own mother.
* PuttingOnTheReich: Once he becomes the leader of Maretime Bay, he starts wearing a CommissarCap and cape, makes speeches from a podium with a giant banner behind him, makes his followers march in single files, and his politics are based entirely on racial prejudices.
* RabbleRouser: He quickly rouses the earth ponies of Maretime Bay with an AngryMobSong against the unicorns and pegasi when he steps up to become temporary sheriff.
* RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver: His main body coat is red, he starts wearing a black sheriff vest in his next scene after the Angry Mob song, [[EvilEyebrows plus his huge eyebrows]], and turns out to be the villain of the movie after his mother [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone realizes he's going too far]].
* TheResenter: He has always resented Hitch for being more good-looking, more heroic, and more competent than he is (and for gaining the position of sheriff that Sprout himself dreamed of attaining in his youth), and wastes no time plastering Hitch's images and pictures with his own visage when he takes over as sheriff. Hitch for his part [[UnknownRival doesn't even seem to be aware that Sprout is jealous of him]].
* SchoolyardBullyAllGrownUp: AMinorKidroduction shows colt Sprout taking over Sunny's game and ignoring her protests. Fast forward to adulthood, and nothing has changed.
* SmallNameBigEgo: He thinks highly of himself despite his general lack of skill or competence.
* StarterVillain: He's the first major antagonist of G5 but in terms of the overall plot of media following the movie, he hasn't had any major impact since being demoted to mostly small cameos.
* SubParSupremacist: Speaks about the glories of earth ponies, but is himself an infantile, lazy, and weak idiot.
* TookALevelInKindness: He makes several appearances in the series as a background character but doesn't demonstrate any of his negative traits, except boasting, and while his out-of-control Earth pony magic did create problems, he clearly did not intend to cause any harm.

* AbusiveMom: Opaline is Misty's adoptive mother, having rescued (rather, kidnapped from her father) and raised her as a filly, but despite her claims to the contrary she is NOT nice to her AT ALL. Not only does Opaline prey on Misty's insecurities and desire for a Cutie Mark to secure her loyalty, but she constantly berates and belittles her for even the littlest mistakes or just for doing things she doesn't like, and has also lied to her about the origins of Equestria. On the very few occasions that Opaline does praise Misty, there is no warmth behind it. The result is that Misty is a nervous, emotionally stunted wreck who desperately craves Opaline's approval, but is utterly terrified of displeasing her and is deeply hurt by her coldness.
--> '''Misty:''' For somepony made of fire, I've never met a heart so cold.
* AdaptationalComicRelief: Downplayed; her appearances in ''Tell Your Tale'' feature more humorous traits to her, such as her ranting in her sleep about getting Sparky's dragon fire, or Misty noting that her breath reeks of garlic.
* AmbiguousSituation:
** How she's a "fire alicorn" and if it's any different from being a normal alicorn. Becoming an alicorn in [=FiM=] has only happened to good-hearted ponies unlike Opaline or temporarily when empowered by external magical sources that [[TheMagicComesBack didn't exist until recently]] so either she was born an alicorn, turned evil afterward, or ascended though other morally dubious means. "Sunny Side Up" had Opaline state she was born such and is connected to fire the same way Celestia and Luna to the sun and moon, but her history of lies leaves it questionable. Spike later clarifies that she comes from Skyros (implying she was born as an alicorn), but her current state as fire alicorn is the result of some kind of dark magic and having drained power from the dragons.
** Her appearance in the comics when she first divided ponykind [[SinisterSilhouettes obscured her appearance]] such it's unclear if she was a unicorn back then who somehow later ascended or if she was (secretly or not) already an alicorn at the time, given her unicorn supremacist rhetoric there were manipulative lies.
* AmbiguouslyHuman: Or perhaps Ambiguously ''Equine''. The finale of Chapter 2, she refers to herself as a "fire alicorn" with Misty's comment about her being "made of fire" implying some other nature. Earlier in "The Traditional Unicorn Sleepover", Misty refers to her mistress as "not a pony, but an alicorn queen". Whether or not that specific part was made up or contains a seed of truth [[UnreliableNarrator remains to be seen.]] Opaline's curved horn also implies a connection to the umbrum (King Sombra's kind in the IDW comics) or the eastern-region unicorns (Mistmane's kind). The end of Chapter 4 heavily implies a connection to the dragons as she can only effectively power up via absorbing their flames.
* AncientEvil: She's been around since the days of peace in Equestria during Twilight's reign. In fact, she's the one who ''caused'' the social divide between ponies in the first place. This is taken ''much'' further when it's revealed she shared childhoods with Celestia and Luna.
* AndIMustScream: Her ultimate fate is being stripped of her cutie mark, her magic, and being sealed inside the core of the Unity Tree inside of her castle.
* AntiMagic: "Missing the Mark" reveals that she can create forcefield bubbles that negate the magic of those trapped inside them.
* BadBoss: Opaline's assistant and adoptive daughter, Misty, is visibly intimidated by her, and for good reason. Not only is Opaline an extremely powerful and evil villain, but she constantly abuses Misty emotionally and verbally.
* BaitTheDog:
** Opaline claims to have rescued and raised Misty out of kindness, but considering the appalling way she treats Misty, it is likely she just needed or wanted a servant.
** In "The Traditional Unicorn Sleepover", Opaline is impressed by Misty's EvilLaugh and praises her for it... but then coldly warns her not to be a "showoff."
* BelievingTheirOwnLies: She seems to honestly believe that Misty was her "friend" even after all the times she abused and belittled her.
* BigBad: She's the main antagonist of Generation 5, being a sinister alicorn who intends to take over the world and causes problems for the Mane 5 behind the scenes.
* BrightIsNotGood: While first seen in dimly lit areas, it is later revealed that in the light, her body appears very bright and colorful. When she absorbs magic, her wings and horn glow with a fiery, purple-white aura.
* CardCarryingVillain: Opaline refers to her own EvilLaugh as a "maniacal laugh". She also reveals to herself as "evil", "wicked", and "villainous" in her VillainSong, and blatantly calls her own goals "selfish".
* CharacterShilling: Twilight Sparkle's recording and Spike state Opaline was such a threat they [[GodzillaThreshold had to seal away Equestria's magic to keep it out of her hooves]], and Misty states Opaline's cunning and unpredictable. While Misty might be justified by being raised by them given a skewed perspective, Opaline's ability to live up to that [[InformedAbility has been subpar]].
* ChewingTheScenery: Almost her default mode.
* ContrastingSequelAntagonist: The {{Big Bad}}s of ''Friendship is Magic'' tended to appear at the start or end of a season, with their schemes being self-contained and having little bearing on other episodes (Season 9 being the only exception due to a LegionOfDoom scenario). In contrast, Opaline is a recurring character (appearing in every episode of Chapter Two of ''Make Your Mark''), with her desire to regain her power and conquer Equestria being an ongoing goal for her, and setting up the conflicts of several episodes. And while most of the major villains of ''FIM'' were quick to make themselves known to the heroes, the Mane Five only had a vague knowledge of Opaline's existence (due to Twilight Sparkle's warning message glitching out as she was about to name the villainous Alicorn she clashed with), with Opaline herself preferring to stay in the shadows until she regains her power.
* TheCorruptor: She attempts to be this to Sunny in "Ali-Conned", posing as Sunny's conscience through the compact to convince her to embrace being an alicorn and the idea that it makes her better than other ponies, hoping to turn Sunny into an ally. All it does is remind Sunny that other ponies only care about her when she's an alicorn, and further strengthens her bond with her friends, who care about her as an individual.
* CreepyHighPitchedVoice: She has a sinister, slightly higher-than-normal voice with a slight rasp to it.
* DaytimeDramaQueen: Watching soap operas is her favorite pastime.
* {{Depower}}:
** [[UnreliableNarrator If Misty's story is to be believed]], Opaline suffered this before the start of the series, with Twilight Sparkle's creation of the Unity Crystals somehow taking her power away from her, leaving her to rely on others to get her work done.
** She is once again drained of her powers by the claws of Sparky, who strips her of her stolen magic, and purifies her corrupted Together Tree, which proceeds to steal her Cutie Mark.
* DiesDifferentlyInAdaptation: More like defeated differently in adaptation, but ''Tell Your Tale'' and ''Make Your Mark'' shows her defeat in slightly different ways. In ''Tell Your Tale'', Sparky is absent and the ponies' Unity Magic is what turns the Together Tree against her, steal her mark, and drag her into its trunk. In ''Make Your Mark'', the ponies' Unity Magic powers Sunny's locket to trap Opaline long enough for Sparky to take back the Dragonstone and turn the Together Tree against her. The Together Tree also ''only'' takes her mark and uses it to lure her to its trunk to trap her. Her reactions upon her defeat also differ, as in ''Tell Your Tale'', Opaline [[DefiantToTheEnd defiantly claims that "This [wasn't] over" as she is dragged into the trunk]], while in ''Make Your Mark'', she desperately chases her stolen cutie mark into the trunk and lets out a BigNo when she realizes that she's about to be sealed in.
* DisproportionateRetribution: In "Sunny Side Up" Opaline claims that Princess Celestia and Princess Luna dismissed her when she tried to be their friend. Opaline took such offense that she decided to dedicate herself to becoming a more powerful Alicorn than either of them.
* TheDreaded: Twilight Sparkle considered her a big enough threat to not only place all the ponies' magic into the Unity Crystals (and embed a message warning future pony generations of Opaline's menace within the crystals), but also create a barrier around Equestria to hide it from Opaline's view.
* DudeWheresMyRespect: In "Nightmare on Mane Street", she finds a way around the barrier Twilight formed around Equestria, arriving in Maretime Bay. But since she did so during Nightmare Night, everypony thinks she's simply wearing an alicorn costume and putting on a show of villainy (to her deep annoyance).
* EvilBrit: She has a light Mid-Atlantic accent in a similar manner to Rarity's.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood:
** She gifts Sunny with a magic compact mirror that transmits back to her castle, only to be annoyed that Sunny barely uses it, having assumed Sunny to be as vain as herself.
** In "Ali-Conned", she fails to comprehend why Sunny doesn't want to stay in Alicorn form. She is also nonplussed to hear that her "wildest dream" is a community garden.
** In "Roots of All Evil", she believed making friends included brainwashing and/or kidnapping others and this was why her Together Tree wouldn't grow properly and be as powerful as the other trees.
* EvilCounterpart:
** To Sunny Starscout. Both are ponies who eventually became alicorns and have knowledge of ancient Equestria. However, she is a prejudiced, greedy, manipulative mare who broke the three pony kinds apart in a quest for power eventually ending up mostly [[DePower powerless]], alone, with almost nothing she wanted, whereas Sunny is a kind, open-minded pony who brought the three pony kinds together again, was granted great power for her noble deeds, has a plentiful amount of friends, and has just about everything she needs.
** To Twilight Sparkle. Both are Alicorns, but while Twilight never asked to rule, and treated others as equals, and did her best to be a good queen, Opaline believes she deserves to rule Equestria and sees the other kinds of ponies as beneath her, and attempted to rule as a dictator.
* EvilEyebrows: Like with Sprout when he was a villain, though hers are thinner and not as pronounced.
* EvilHasABadSenseOfHumor: "Opaline Alone" has her in hysterics over Sunny's banana peel video that she keeps replaying for all the wrong reasons.
* EvilIsBigger: As with most alicorns, she is noticeably larger than most ponies. Even in flashbacks to ancient Equestria, back when she was an unicorn, she is already shown to have towered over other ponies.
* EvilIsHammy: Incredibly evil and incredibly dramatic in her intonations.
* EvilIsNotWellLit: Her debut scene is set inside a dark castle room. Appropriately, she is credited as "Shadowy Alicorn". In flashbacks to ancient Equestria in the second issue of the G5 comics, her body is entirely [[SinisterSilhouettes hidden in shadow]].
* EvilLaugh:
** Her laugh makes it pretty clear that she is ObviouslyEvil.
** She goes into another one alongside her minion Misty but gets annoyed that Misty isn't laughing in synch with her.
* ExcessiveEvilEyeshadow: Has silver glitter eyeshadow that highlights her vanity.
* TheExile: According to Spike, Opaline was banished from Skyros; her alicorn homeland.
* FreudianExcuse: She claims to have one, but even if it is real, it is ridiculously petty. As a filly growing up in Skyros, Opaline was overshadowed by Celestia and Luna, who supposedly ignored her when she tried to befriend them. This led Opaline to vow to become more powerful than anypony else, so that she would never be underestimated again.
* FreudianExcuseDenial: In "Roots of All Evil Pt. 2", Misty and Sunny accuse Opaline of being evil [[IJustWantToHaveFriends due to never having friends and the real reason she wanted power was to force others to be hers]], she rebuffs those attempts to reach out to her. Notably when she gives a {{Flashback}} claiming her FreudianExcuse was Celestia and Luna being favored over her, what's shown make it look like it was jealousy of the their friendship and them ignoring her.
* GaveUpTooSoon: Many of Opaline's plans to try and steal the Crystal Brighthouse's magic would succeed if she were patient enough to learn from her failures rather than immediately switch to a new plan. For example, when she sends Misty to [[Recap/MyLittlePonyMakeYourMarkS2E6TheTraditionalUnicornSleepOver steal the Hope Lantern from the Crystal Brighthouse]], Misty only fails because she buried the Lantern in the yard overnight and Pipp found it in the morning first, rather than heading straight to Opaline. Instead of just having Misty try again, since Misty was never revealed as the thief, she decides to target Sparky and steal ''his'' magic so she'll be strong enough to steal the Lantern herself.
* GodSaveUsFromTheQueen: Unlike every other alicorn in the franchise, who were called princesses no matter their actual duties specifically because of this trope, she envisions herself as a tyrannical queen over all ponykind.
* GreaterScopeVillain: She is revealed to have been responsible for starting a racial divide in the past, prompting Twilight to create the Unity Crystals to try and stabilize harmony. After tensions soured over time and the crystals were separated, magic was removed from Equestria completely. This retroactively makes her the overarching villain of the G5, since she caused all the ponies to lose their magic in the first place.
* GreenAndMean: She has a part-green mane and is an evil villain.
* GreenEyedMonster:
** In the TYT short "Under The Mistytoe", she ''erupts'' with jealous rage upon witnessing the Mane Five's Cutie Mark magic combine with the magic of the Brighthouse's Prisbeam and the Wishing Star to create a spectacular rainbow aurora.
--->'''Opaline:''' Did you see that?! That magic! That power! It should be ''mine!'' ''All mine!''
** Her overarching motivation is revealed to be petty childhood jealousy towards Celestia and Luna, who "stole her spotlight" with their sun and moon spectacle.
* HiddenAgendaVillain: She wants to "take back what belongs to her" now that magic has returned, but it takes until late in the series to reveal what that entails.
* HiddenVillain: Aside from a garbled warning made by Twilight Sparkle, none of the Main Five were even aware of Opaline's existence until the end of Chapter 4.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: The end of the special has her claim that now that magic has returned, it's time to take back what belongs to her, implying that she feels entitled to magic. However, she's also the one who started the racial tensions between the pony races centuries ago, which would eventually lead to the magic being sealed away and her being banished from its magic.
** The Together Tree that she planted ends up being what ultimately defeats her, by acting as a conduit for Equestria's friendship magic to unlock Sunny's locket, before taking her cutie mark and sealing her away.
* HornsOfVillainy: Aside from her alicorn horn, her ears are so long and pointed that they look like additional horns. This is particularly noticeable in [[ComicBook/MyLittlePony2022 the second issue of the comics]], where we see her in ancient Equestria with her body completely hidden in silhouette.
* IcyBlueEyes: She has blue eyes and is a villainous Alicorn. Her debut at the end of ''Make Your Mark'' even ends with a close-up of her left eye.
* ILied: She strings Misty along with the promise of a Cutie Mark. Even assuming it to be within her power (she can at least steal Cutie Marks and transfer them to other objects), her attitude makes it clear she could care less about actually following through. She later outright admits in Chapter 5 that she never intended to give Misty a Cutie Mark.
* IneffectualLoner: Her attempt to retrieve the Dragonstone in "Sunny Side Up" showcases exactly why Twilight needed to embrace of the Magic of Friendship during her tenure. All alone, Opaline is forced to rely on her limited amounts of magic power to blast her way up the mountain where the artifact is being held, not even being able to lift herself off the ground due to her lack of virtue. The Dragonstone falls into a crevice that she can't reach and she is forced to go return to her castle empty handed. A FetchQuest tends to go easier when you have a group of friends backing you up to thwart any otherwise avoidable/dangerous phenomena that may come about. While she does obtain the stone in the following episode, she possibly wouldn't have had all that trouble if she had had the help.
* InformedAbility:
** Twilight Sparkle's recording and Spike state Opaline [[TheDreaded was so dangerous]], she had to seal away all of Equestria's magic and hide the land away to stop her. But Opaline's ability to [[ManaDrain steal magic]] that made her such a threat is identical to Lord Tirek's, failed to show his and other villains' competence, and like him at the [[NearVillainVictory peak of her power]], she was defeated by friendship magic. Also the heroes, with only a fraction of the experience or power Twilight had, put up good fights [[CurbStompCushion even when losing due to Opaline being near-peak power]]. So, while a legitimate threat, Opaline fell short of showing herself to be so much more threatening than prior villains Twilight defeated to warrant [[GodzillaThreshold such drastic measures]] to stop.
** The comics had Discord recount her as such an effective {{manipulat|ive Bitch}}or she was able turn the pony tribes racist against each other during the golden age of harmony. But it was near-identical to what the villains pulled in the ''[=FiM=]'' finale and the lessons that let the tribes see through it in time would be more widespread, making [[TakeOurWordForIt its apparent effectiveness]] come off as contrivance rather than her manipulative skill, which in the show was sub-par (completely failing to manipulate Sunny, only succeeding with Misty due to her being a sheltered child who she quickly lost influence over, and Opaline herself being frequently tricked).
* ItsAllAboutMe: Her treatment of Misty makes it pretty clear that she only cares about herself. The story she told Misty about the separation of ponykind -- that ponies selfishly hoarded the magic that was rightfully hers before the "evil" Twilight Sparkle sealed it away -- is similarly [[SelfServingMemory self-serving]].
* KickTheDog:
** Opaline's general mistreatment of Misty. Special mention goes to destroying her smoothie and telling her that she will never be enough until she delivers Sparky, even after Misty managed to deliver some dragon fire.
** She [[WouldHurtAChild intended to kill Sparky]] by letting him fall to his death from her tower after draining him, meaning it was unnecessary for her goal of regaining her powers, simply out of spite for the times he's interfered with her plans.
* KnightOfCerebus: Downplayed, but still present. Opaline does have some comical moments due to her tendency to start ChewingTheScenery, but she is the evilest, most frightening, and most dangerous character introduced in G5 so far. Her mistreatment of Misty is a disturbingly realistic portrayal of ParentalAbuse, and she is an out-and-out ''[[PhysicalGoddess alicorn]]'' who has [[ReallySevenHundredYearsOld lived long enough]] to have met Twilight Sparkle, who, despite having defeated many dangerous villains before, deemed Opaline such a severe threat to Equestria that she locked away all of its magic.
* LaserGuidedKarma: Sparky uses the Dragonstone to strip Opaline of her stolen magic, both pony and dragon, and purifies her corrupted Together Tree. The tree also becomes her new prison after it strips her of her Cutie Mark, forcing her to chase after it, before dragging it deep into its core, where she'll never be able to reach it, then sealing the doorway behind her.
* LaughablyEvil: She's constantly cracking jokes and making evil laughs, and lampshading how evil she is. She's also quite dumb and oblivious.
* LongLived: As first revealed in the comics, she was around during the reign of Twilight Sparkle. She is still alive in present Equestria. This is somewhat confirmed in the show, where she says that alicorns are actually immortal. She also grew up alongside Luna and Celestia who themselves were implied to be well over a thousand years old when Twilight was still young.
* ManipulativeBitch: Opaline is this to everyone she meets. In the past, she manipulated ponies into turning on each other, and in the present, she tries to turn Sunny evil and has also deceived her adoptive daughter Misty into believing lies about Equestria and that she can be given a cutie mark. It's implied by Discord in the comics that she was able to turn all three tribes against each other in Ancient Equestria by spreading bad rumors and psychological warfare that even Equestria's then-heroes were unable to dispel.
* MeaningfulName: Opaline means to be opalescent, i.e, of varying colors. She becomes very bright and colorful in the light.
* MindControl: She can cast a brainwashing spell on her captives to force them to do her bidding.
* MultipleChoicePast: The 2022 comics show she was born a unicorn (but her appearance was obscured enough she could have been hiding being an alicorn), while ''Make Your Mark'' shows her as being an alicorn when Celestia and Luna were young long before that. Note that both accounts come from {{Unreliable Expositor}}s.
* MysteriousPast: Nothing concrete is known about Opaline's past beyond that she somehow was such a threat Twilight was forced to seal magic in the Unity Crystals and create an invisibility barrier to keep her from acquiring it. What little is given is [[MultipleChoicePast seemingly contradictory]] or raises more questions than it answers. "Nightmare on Mane Street" reveals that she somehow created a Together Tree, which form when ponies join together in harmony, although the present Opaline strongly opposes such. "The Isle of Scaly" reveals that she was banished from her homeland, Skyros, but the reasons why are never stated.
* NearVillainVictory:
** In her message, Twilight mentions Opaline nearly succeeded in stealing all the magic in Equestria before she was stopped.
** She's close to victory yet again in the "Roots of All Evil" two-parter, having stolen the Cutie Marks of every pony in Equestria, had Spike under her control, and stripped Sunny of her Alicorn Powers.
* NeverMyFault: In the TYT short "Ponykind Parade-emonium", she has Misty use "Blazeberries" to drive the critters of Maretime Bay into a frenzy. When Misty is targeted by one of these critters and asks for help, Opaline scoffs that this is ''Misty's'' mess.
* NoNameGiven: She is left nameless in her debut, simply credited as "Shadowy Alicorn". Her true name is first given in promotional material revealing an updated map of Generation 5 Equestria, which includes the location of her castle, referred to as "Opaline's dark castle".
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: A downplayed example. Her horn is more curved than the other unicorns/alicorns we've seen, marking her as someone from Mistmane's region or someone using dark magic like Sombra's (an umbrum according to the comics). Though it may be because she's a different type of alicorn entirely, as Misty describes Opaline to be someone "made of fire" in ''Make Your Mark'' and Opaline herself boasts that dragon fire would make her "the most powerful '''fire alicorn''' of all time" in ''[[WebAnimation/MyLittlePonyTellYourTale Tell Your Tale]]''.
* NoSocialSkills: Unsurprisingly, when an ancient race elitist goes out in public for the first time in thousands of years, she proves to be very out-of-touch, thinking Nightmare Night costumes are indicative of Equestrian fashion and demanding everyone fear her.
* NotSoAboveItAll: In "Under The Mistytoe", it is shown that she secretly likes dressing up for Wishing Day and singing songs. "Opaline Alone" takes this up to eleven, showing her playing with dolls, watching and laughing at Sunny's My Bananas video and trying and failing to give herself a hooficure based on a tutorial video from Jazz among other things.
* NotSoDifferentRemark: In "Roots of All Evil Part 2", she claims that she and Sunny are similar, due to them both seeking magical knowledge and keeping certain magical artifacts in their possession.
* ObviouslyEvil: Lurking in a dark, shadowy throne room while observing the heroes from afar and laughing maniacally while boasting about taking back what is yours clearly shows you're evil.
* OnlyFriend: She calls herself this to Misty during "Hoof Done It". [[BadBoss Considering how she usually treats her]], it's clear she's either lying or trying to manipulate the unicorn.
* OrcusOnHisThrone: Even in her diminished state, Opaline is by demonstration still one of the most powerful spellcasters alive, certainly far above anyone in Maretime Bay. Despite this, she's unwilling to directly confront the heroes until she's been restored to her full power, leaving such schemes to Misty. ''Tell Your Tale'' has her unable to even cast enough magic to scare away a raccoon unicorn, making her reluctance to personally act more understandable. She starts to subvert it in Chapter 4, after getting tired of Misty's failures, and throws it off completely once she regains her power by draining Sparky. Chapter 5 shows that she's unable to even enter Equestria thanks to Twilight's cloaking barrier, despite the fact that ponies can come to and from her castle at will, explaining why she can't confront the heroes unless they come to her. She relies on Misty because, for the most part, she has no other choice. Lampshaded by herself when she finally gets off her ass to go retrieve the Dragonstone herself.
-->'''Opaline''': ''*panting and grunting*'' All that sitting around and scheming the castle has got me out of shape! ''*chuckles nervously*''
* PetTheDog: After Misty finally succeeds in bringing her Sparky (and unwittingly allows her to capture the Mane Five), Opaline genuinely praises her, and pledges to fulfill her promise of granting her a cutie mark.
* PlayingWithFire: Comes from being a Fire Alicorn: Opaline decorates her lair with magical purple torches, and can burn plants to a crisp.
* PointyEars: It's a little hard to tell, but her ears are more pointy than other ponies.
* PoliticallyIncorrectVillain: She believed that unicorns were superior to other ponies and used this to start sowing racial tensions. In the present, she expresses the belief that Alicorns are the natural rulers of Equestria and are superior to other ponykinds due to their powerful magic.
* PowerParasite: She's able to absorb other forms of magic to increase her own power. Unable to steal the Prisbeam power from the Brighthouse, she targets Sparky to take the power of his dragon flame. In Chapter 5, she demonstrates the ability to steal Cutie Marks from ponies, similar to Starlight Glimmer.
* PurpleIsPowerful: She has a purple coat and is an alicorn, which automatically makes her superior to normal ponies.
* PsychopathicWomanchild: Opaline has quite a lot of shades of this: She cares about no one except herself, feels a massive sense of entitlement towards anything she wants, always reacts badly whenever things don't go her own way, blames others for her mistakes, tends to do lazy things in her spare time, and her overall reason for being a villain is nothing more than petty childhood jealousy towards two other ponies for getting the fame and attention she wanted.
* TheReveal: The comics reveal that she was the one who originally started racial tensions and caused Twilight to create the Unity Crystals. ''Make Your Mark'' Chapter 4 shows she grew up alongside Celestia and Luna and that their unwillingness to let her into their circle caused her to snap.
* TheRightOfASuperiorSpecies: Opaline believes that alicorns are meant to rule over all other ponies and be the ''only'' magical species because they're... well... alicorns.
* SealedEvilInACan: In "Roots of All Evil Part 2", she ends up getting trapped within her own Together Tree.
* SecondaryColorNemesis: Her main colors are green and purple and she's a villain.
* SelfDisposingVillain: She jumps into the Together Tree after it steals her cutie mark, sealing herself inside.
* SeriousBusiness: The "important mission" that Opaline tasks Misty with during "Opaline Alone"? It isn't bringing her Sparky. Rather, it's just that she wants a smoothie.
* ThereIsAnother: We're led to believe Sunny's the only Alicorn in the current world before this shadowy alicorn appears.
* SympathyForTheDevil: Despite all the abuse she put Misty through, at the end of the first season Misty tells Opaline that she feels sorry for her for never having a true friend.
* TimeAbyss: She's as old as Celestia and Luna, meaning she's at least one thousand years old ''on top'' of however many centuries or millennia it took for Twilight and her friends to fade into legend.
* UngratefulBitch: No matter what Misty does for her, Opaline always treats her with utter disdain. The finale of Chapter Two has her shouting at the former for not bringing Sparky himself to her, even though the dragon flame that Misty managed to obtain partially restored her power.
* UnknownRival: To Sunny. Opaline utterly despises Sunny not just for her belief in pony unity, but for being a fully-powered Alicorn while Opaline has little of her own magic left. Sunny, for her own part, doesn't even know Opaline exists until the end of chapter 4.
* VainSorceress: A recurring quirk of hers is her superficial, shallow priorities. She wastes tons of time thinking what evil royal crown she wants to wear and playing dress-up in her wardrobe, and she's more enraged about losing her hairbrush than getting defeated.
* VillainNoLongerIdle: After one-too-many failures by Misty, Opaline decides to be more proactive and carries out her own plans, at least to the extent that she can. Once she finds a way past Equestria's barrier, she no longer needs Misty's help for schemes taking place there.
* VillainSong:
** Gets one in ''Tell Your Tale's'' "Opaline Alone". One that is prerecorded for her to listen to while she finds something to wear, complete with holographic images of Opaline singing about how amazing she supposedly is and how she'll eventually bring all of Equestria under her rule.
** Chapter 6 has her sing "[[CardCarryingVillain I'm a Villain]]", gloating about how evil she is.
* VillainsOutShopping: Apparently she donates her old clothes to thrift stores. Not only is it humorous to imagine why an AncientEvil would do an act of such mundane generosity, but seeing how she's a giant alicorn, there are likely no other ponies her size anyways.
* VirtueIsWeakness: Shows immense disdain for any form of altruism among ponykind, let alone "silly things" like friendship and equality, especially it was shown in Chapter Six. It even seems to be a BerserkButton if her ranting in Chapter Two's finale is any indication.
* WalkingSpoiler: If the fact she confirms that Sunny isn't the only alicorn in the current world doesn't do it, the fact that she's responsible for the racial tensions of Ponies in the present day should do that for you.
* WithFriendsLikeThese: In "Hoof Done It?", she claims to be Misty's "only friend", despite treating her terribly.
* WouldHurtAChild: Once she drained Sparky of his dragon magic to charge the Dragon Stone and unlock her fire alicorn magic, she was willing to drop him off the tallest tower of her castle.
-->'''Opaline:''' My... that's a long drop.
