[[folder:Emperor Kellanved - WARNING: Major Spoilers Ahead]]
!!Wu/Kellanved, Emperor of Malaz
-> Every throne is an arrow-butt.
--> ''Literature/DeadhouseGates'' (quoted in an epigraph)

Founder of the Malazan Empire. A brilliant but inscrutable Dal Honese mage, he and his partner Dancer recruited an adoptive "family" of criminals and soldiers on Malaz Isle to take over first the island, then the neighbouring states, and finally began an expansion spanning multiple continents. His long reign is hugely transformative for the world and sets in motion many of the conflicts which we see in the early parts of the series, but between the Prologue and first chapter of ''Literature/GardensOfTheMoon'' he is overthrown and murdered by Surly, who replaces him at the head of the Empire under the name Laseen.

Kellanved appears in Esslemont's prequel trilogy ''Path to Ascendancy'', and is quoted in epigraphs and discussed extensively throughout Erikson's series, but never appears as such. He is, however, also known by another identity, whose existence and nature is a significant spoiler. His tropes have been gathered under the folder of that identity, on the page [[spoiler:[[Characters/MalazanBookOfTheFallenAzathanaiGodsAndAscendants High House Shadow]]]], as [[spoiler:Shadowthrone/Ammanas]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Dancer - WARNING: Major Spoilers Ahead]]
!!Dorin Rav/Dancer, Master of the Talon
-> A kingdom, an empire. These are just symbols.
--> ''Night of Knives''

A masterful assassin and Kellanved's only friend, he became the second most important person in the "family" that was the founding elite of the Malazan Empire. He was the founder and master of [[SecretPolice the Talon]], an order of assassins enforcing his and Kellanved's will throughout the world. Along with Kellanved, he was assassinated by Surly around the beginning of ''Literature/GardensOfTheMoon'' when the latter took control of the Empire.

Dancer appears in Esslemont's prequel trilogy ''Path to Ascendancy'', and is quoted in epigraphs and discussed extensively throughout Erikson's series, but never appears as such. He is, however, also known by another identity, whose existence and nature is a significant spoiler. His tropes have been gathered under the folder of that identity, on the page [[spoiler:[[Characters/MalazanBookOfTheFallenAzathanaiGodsAndAscendants High House Shadow]]]], as [[spoiler:Cotillion/The Rope]].

There are even indications that Rel's [[spoiler: reign is less bloody and more prosperous than Kellanved's]].
