!!War Machine Armors
!!!Appearances: Film/IronMan2 | Film/IronMan3 | Film/AvengersAgeOfUltron | Film/CaptainAmericaCivilWar | Film/SpiderManHomecomingIn a video recording | Film/AvengersInfinityWar | Film/AvengersEndgame | Film/ArmorWars

The heavily weaponized suits of PoweredArmor used by James Rhodes.

* AchillesHeel: Given how Tony develops it similarly to the Iron Man armor, it shares the same weakness of becoming completely unusable if the Arc Reactor powering it gets destroyed. In Captain America: Civil War, Vision accidentally shoots it with the Mind Stone and destroys it while Rhodey's flying, disabling the suit and causing him to fall at high speeds while being completely and utterly helpless, resulting in his paralysis after hitting the ground.
* ArmCannon: In addition to the PowerPalms, the War Machine armors have all kinds of firearms in their arms.
* BFG: War Machine's iconic weapon. Tony seems to think he's compensating for something. Rhodey's reply is "It's called being a badass."
* BottomlessMagazines: No matter how often Rhodey shoots, he never runs out of ammunition for his armors' weapons.
* ClothesMakeTheSuperman: Even though Rhodey is a decent fighter with military training, it's when he wears his War Machine suit that he becomes a powerful superhero capable of decimating armies of Hammer Drones, Ultron Sentries, and Outriders single-handedly.
* CollapsibleHelmet: At first, the armor's face plate can only slide up or down. Starting with Civil War, the helmet can fully retract into the suit.
* DarkIsNotEvil: The War Machine armor is a menacing black and gray, complete with an overdose of guns and a red-eyed helmet, but Rhodey's a MilitarySuperhero who's more grounded than his best friend Iron Man.
* DisabilityNegatingSuperpower: After Civil War, all the War Machine armors have built-in walking aids that allow the semi-paralyzed James Rhodes to walk.
* FlyingBrick: The suit allows Rhodey to fly, have tremendous superhuman strength, and take a lot of damage plus it's equipped with a lot of guns and explosives.
* FlyingFirepower: Even more so than Iron Man, as War Machine is the same armor but equipped with more conventional weaponry such as a machine guns, missiles, or bombs.
* HeadsUpDisplay: Similar to Iron Man, all War Machine armors have this, albeit colored green rather than blue.
* HeartLight: Just like Iron Man, the War Machine armors have arc reactors on their chestplates that serve as their power sources.
* ImmuneToBullets: Best demonstrated in the final battle of Iron Man 2. No matter how much the Hammer Drones strafe the War Machine armor, it has little to no effect.
* InfraredXrayCamera: Rhodey repeatedly demonstrates that he can use his armors to detect the heat signature of the people in the surrounding area.
* KineticWeaponsAreJustBetter: While capable of using the same repulsor energy as Iron Man, the War Machine armor favors the use of heavy ordnance via wrist mounted firearms and a shoulder mounted minigun.
* LightningBruiser: It's almost as fast as Tony's suits and is incredibly strong and sturdy. It also has more firepower and ammunition.
* MoreDakka: The key difference between the Iron Man and War Machine suits. The War Machine is equipped with at least five different kinds of guns. While more heavily armed, these guns are mostly conventional weaponry compared to the more advanced tech in the Iron Man suit, keeping the playing field level. Among the armors, Mark VII is the king of this trope, being much bulkier than previous War Machine armors, and seems to have double the armament of even the previously most loaded armor, the Mark IV.
* PoweredArmor: Probably the most powerful ones that can be found on Earth outside of Iron Man's.
* PowerPalms: Much like Iron Man's, the War Machine armors have repulsor blasters in their palms that are mostly used for flight stabilization, but can also serve as powerful weapons.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: While the Mark 2 eyes light up blue like all Iron Man suits, after it's converted into the War Machine armor, the eyes become red. It helps to make it clear that, even though Rhodey is certainly one of the good guys, he's still someone you really don't want to have as your enemy.
* RocketBoots: Naturally, all War Machine armors have reactors on their feet and backs that allow them to fly.
* SavedForTheSequel: At the end of the first Film/IronMan1 film, Rhodey looks at the Iron Man Armor Mark 2 and briefly contemplates using it to help Iron Man, but he finally changes his mind and says, "Next time, baby". Indeed, he wears the suit and becomes War Machine in the sequel.
* ShoulderCannon: War Machine's trademark weapon is the big gun on his shoulder. It's a big gun, but not the big gun.
* SuperSpeed: The War Machine armors are fast enough to catch up with Iron Man armors.
* SuperStrength: Just like Iron Man's, the War Machine armors greatly enhance their user's strength.
* WalkingArmory: He's not called "War Machine" for nothing. His first armor alone gets a whole scene where Justin Hammer presents all of its weapons, which include the iconic 7.62-mm minigun, an M24 shotgun, a semi-automatic 9 mm pistol, two FN F2000 tacticals, a 40 mm GrenadeLauncher, and the self-guided missile known as the "Ex-Wife". Later armor models add even more weapons.

!!!Appearances: Film/IronMan2

The first War Machine suit, which was made from the Iron Man Mark 2 Armor.
----
* AdaptationalEarlyAppearance: In the comics it took Rhodey till the '90s to take on the mantle of War Machine after being a trusted ally of Stark for years and after replacing Tony as Iron Man for a while. In the MCU it was the first suit he wore as soon as in his second appearance.
* BeamOWar: Rhodey and Tony cause this by firing their repulsors at each other on two occasions during Iron Man 2. The first time at the end of the brawl at Tony's birthday party, and later in the final fight against Whiplash.
* ChekhovsGun:
** Subverted with the Ex-Wife missile. Despite being introduced in an earlier scene and being hyped up as War Machine's greatest weapon, it ends up being completely useless against Whiplash during the final fight.
** Played straight with the aforementioned BeamOWar, which becomes crucial at the end to defeat Whiplash.
* CombinedEnergyAttack: At the end of the final fight, both Rhodey and Tony use their repulsors on Whiplash at the same time, resulting in a powerful deflagration that overwhelms him.
* CompensatingForSomething: This is what Tony thinks about all the guns strapped on Rhodey's upgraded War Machine armor in Iron Man 2.
* CrapolaTech: The Ex-Wife. Then again, it's Hammer Tech, what else did you expect?
* DivergentCharacterEvolution: This suit started off as the Iron Man Armor Mark 2, before Justin Hammer worked on it and turned it into something completely different.
* EyeColourChange: The Iron Man Armor Mark 2, like all Iron Man armors, had glowing blue eyes. But when the suit is turned into the War Machine Armor Mark I, the eyes become red.
* FakeSpecialAttack: The "Ex-Wife" bunker-buster warhead. After all the hype (and a brief launch sequence with massive backblast) it just bounces off Whiplash's armor and sizzles in a nearby puddle. With a farting noise, no less!
-->Tony: Hammer Tech?\\
Rhodey: [dejectedly] Yeah.
* GatlingGood: The Mark I's signature weapon is its shoulder-mounted and auto-targeting minigun.
* GrenadeLauncher: One of the weapons added by Justin Hammer to the first War Machine Armor is a grenade launcher, although Rhodey doesn't use it much and it's not clear where exactly it is mounted.
* HackYourEnemy: Rhodey's suit is victim of this towards the end of the second film, when Ivan Vanko uses his hacking skills to take control of it and send it after Tony.
* TheWorfBarrage: When War Machine fires the "Ex-Wife" missile at Whiplash, which Hammer has previously claimed was his ultimate weapon, it harmlessly bounces off Whiplash's armor.
* WreckedWeapon: During the final battle of Iron Man 2, the armor's minigun gets sliced in two by Vanko's whips.

Rhodey's new suit when he dons the identity of Iron Patriot.
----
* AdaptationalHeroism: In the comics, the Iron Patriot armor was originally used by Norman Osborn, a.k.a. the Green Goblin, a supervillain who was at best a KnightTemplar.
* AmericanRobot: It's a PoweredArmor rather than a robot, but otherwise it plays the trope straight.
* BlueIsHeroic: The suit's color is primarily blue.
* CaptainPatriotic: The Iron Patriot was designed by the government specifically to appeal to American patriotism.
* FailsafeFailure: When Killian heats up the Iron Patriot suit, Rhodey gets ejected from it, even though he really doesn't want to.
* GrandTheftPrototype: In Iron Man 3, the Iron Patriot armor is hijacked from Rhodey by Aldrich Killian and Eric Savin. In the climax, Rhodey goes and takes back his suit with nothing but a pistol, saving the President's life at the same time.
* MissionControl: Much like an actual deployed fighter jet, Iron Patriot has a dedicated support staff feeding him intel and keeping him up to speed. Bizarrely, they're not heard from during the extended period that he goes missing, nor when someone else is in the suit.
* PrimaryColorChampion: Invoked. The suit is painted red, white, and blue, like the American flag, because it tested better with "focus groups". Significantly, it plays up the blue more (making it near-identical to Captain America's suit color schemes), in contrast to the original ComicBook/DarkReign armor used by Norman Osborn, where red is more dominant.
* SoleSurvivor: At the end of Iron Man 3, this is the only armor that was not blown up.
* Sucksessor: Everyone thought War Machine was much cooler, including Rhodey himself.
* WearingAFlagOnYourHead: This suit is painted with American flag colors and motifs.

----
* FacepalmOfDoom: Does this to one of the Ultron Sentries during the final battle, flying towards it hand forward and blasting its face with a repulsor.
* ImmuneToMindControl: This suit cannot be hacked by Ultron thanks to a new encryption drive developed by Tony.
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: If Rhodey's stories are to be believed, he used this armor to lift an entire tank and bring it to a General's palace.
* PaletteSwap: This armor is essentially the Iron Patriot Armor in War Machine's traditional colors.
* SnapBack: It's never explained why Rhodey went back to being War Machine after becoming Iron Patriot in Iron Man 3.
* SoLastSeason: Considering Rhodey's previous armors were hijacked by villains in his last two films, this time Tony doesn't take any risks and gives Rhodey a new encryption drive for his suit to ensure that Ultron could not hack into it, as shown in a deleted scene.

!!!Appearances: Film/CaptainAmericaCivilWar | Film/SpiderManHomecoming Cameo in a video recording

The suit worn by Rhodey during the Avengers' Civil War.
----
* ArmoredCoffins: The armor turns into this when the Arc Reactor is accidentally shot down by Vision while Rhodey is flying at several thousand feet up, leaving him trapped in a lifeless and blind suit as it plummets towards the ground. We even get a brief shot from his POV as he falls to the ground, unable to do anything.
* CarryABigStick: This suit's arsenal includes a massive stun baton, giving Rhodey more options at close range.
* EyeLightsOut: After the Arc Reactor is hit by Vision's energy blast, the glow of the armor's eyes fades out.
* KillTally: The upper-right side of its chestplate is marked with white icons--revealed to be stylized versions of 's head--presumably representing the number of Ultron drones he destroyed during the Battle of Sokovia.
* MidSeasonUpgrade: This armor incorporates much more firepower than its predecessors, there is a stun baton that can be pulled out from a compartment on the right shoulder, sonic pulse weapons on the backs of the gloves, as well as new missile and artillery compartments all over the suit.
* ScarredEquipment: Rhodey's War Machine armor is dented and scratched in Civil War, in contrast to Tony's absurdly shiny armor. This serves as a nice, subtle nod to the different roles Iron Man and War Machine play.
* SonicStunner: The suit's got one in its gauntlet, in case of any non-lethal fights. It works on Wanda, not so much on Giant-Man.
* StaticStunGun: A melee variant. Another addition to Rhodey's arsenal in Civil War is a huge electric baton/warhammer for close-quarters combat and to easily incapacitate opponents.
-->Rhodey: Sorry Cap, this won't kill you, but it ain't gonna tickle either.
* WreckedWeapon: Captain America breaks Rhodey's stun baton during the airport battle. Also, the whole armor is heavily damaged after being hit by Vision's beam attack.

The suit used by Rhodey during the Battle of Wakanda and the Ambush on Thanos.
----
* BreakingOldTrends: This is the very first (and only) War Machine armor to be used by Rhodey in more than one film.
* DeathFromAbove: Rhodey can lay down the hurt more than ever in Infinity War, as this armor is equipped with a pack of bombs, making him able to do bombing runs.
* MacrossMissileMassacre: This suit has two shoulder mounted missile launchers that help Rhodey decimate the Outriders at a tactical chokepoint in Infinity War.
* MidSeasonUpgrade: This armor includes a built-in walking aid that can help the semi-paralyzed Rhodey walk properly. It also has reinforced durability, and it incorporates many new weapons, such as the bomb dispensers in its back and the multiple missile launchers.
* SuperToughness: It seems that after what happened to Rhodey in the airport battle, Tony decided to improve the durability of this armor. During the Battle of Wakanda, it was durable enough to withstand a powerful blow from Cull Obsidian's hammer and the subsequent crash landing with no damage to Rhodey. Even more impressive, the suit remained operational after Thanos used the power of the Space Stone against it.

!!!Appearances: Film/AvengersEndgame

The suit worn by Rhodey during the Battle of Earth.
----
* AllThereInTheManual: Though we don't see much of this suit in action during the film, we get to learn more about its weapons and upgrades in the full script of Avengers: Endgame and the artwork The Art of Avengers: Endgame.
** While the suit's original design was ultimately not used in the film, it's possible to see what it looked like and what its weapons and upgrades were in the concept art from illustrator Phil Saunders.
* BiggerIsBetter: This armor is larger and bulkier than any of its predecessors.
* BlueIsHeroic: Like the previous Iron Patriot armor, it's primarily blue.
* DeletedRole: This armor's original design was supposed to appear in Avengers: Endgame during the scenes on Morag, but its appearance was eventually scrapped.
* FreezeFrameBonus: Before Rhodey puts the armor on, it can be briefly seen in the background when Ant-Man receives a distress call from Rhodey after Thanos attacks the base, which explains how Rhodey gets a new suit during the final battle after the Mark VI was damaged.
* ImportedAlienPhlebotinum: According to the full script for Avengers: Endgame released by Marvel, this suit's recolored design has been upgraded with alien technology, presumably from either Rocket or Captain Marvel.
* MacrossMissileMassacre: A piece of concept art shows that this suit can fire a lot of missiles, just like its predecessor.
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: At the end of the film, Rhodey is seen rushing into battle with this armor and we can safely assume that he used all of its weaponry to kill plenty of Thanos's minions, but we don't actually get to see any of it. The only time he can be seen before the end of the final battle is when he is bombarded by Thanos's spaceship alongside Professor Hulk.
* PrimaryColorChampion: This suit has a red, white, and blue color scheme, similar to the Iron Patriot armor.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: From what is shown in the concept art of Avengers: Endgame, this suit's original design appears to be visually similar to the Mark IV.

* NonActionGuy: Of all the War Machine Armors, this is the only one that is never seen used in any fight scene (unless you count sucker punching Star-Lord on Morag).
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: After the suit was damaged during Thanos's attack of the Avengers Facility, Rhodey had to abandon it in the wreckage. It's unknown if the suit could have been recovered after the final battle or not.

* AceCustom: On the receiving end of this trope. The War Machine Armor he uses in Iron Man 2 and 3 is Tony's Mk. II, up-gunned and up-armored. Justified, because, since the War Machine armor serves as Tony's buffer from the government and military so they stop hounding him from giving them his Iron Man tech, Tony can't afford to give them the most extreme levels of technology he knows he can't trust them with, especially in light of the events of The Winter Soldier up to Civil War. Thus, the latest War Machine armors are definitely advanced, but not too advanced.
* AdaptationalEarlyAppearance: Rhodey was introduces to the Iron Man-comics in 1979, when Iron Man already was an established hero. They became close friends after Tony saved Rhodey's life and Rhodey learned his secret identity as one of the first allies. In the MCU they met and befriend way before Tony became Iron Man.

By Infinity War, he’s grown tired of how discourteous and priggish Ross is and implies he regrets signing the Accords. He then proceeds to cut him off when Ross orders the arrest of the remaining Avengers to team up with them once more.
* BroughtDownToBadass: In Iron Man 3. He's stripped of his suit, and winds up on an oil tanker armed with only a pistol against Extremis-empowered soldiers. He proceeds to go and get his suit back and rescue the President. It’s worth noting that both he and Tony are without their armor in this situation with Rhodey doing most of the heavy lifting in their fight with AIM until the House Party arrives.

In Iron Man 2, he's forced to utilize Hammetech in the War Machine armor, meaning Vanko takes over his armor, and his touted "Ex-Wife" super-bunker-buster weapon fails epicly at the worst moment. He's not present for Avengers, and by Iron Man 3 is forced to take on a new identity which everyone mocks, before his armor is hijacked by the villains. In Age of Ultron, he's gently mocked by Tony and Thor at the party, and his attempt to play TheCavalry at the final battle is upstaged by the much more powerful Vision. It reaches its apex when he's crippled from a glancing blow from the Vision in Civil War. It’s finally gone by Infinity War, where he is clearly the heaviest hitter Team Wakanda has (now that he’s finally able to use his full arsenal) until Thor shows up.

* TookALevelInJerkass: Is noticeably a lot ruder and snarkier in Film/AvengersEndgame than in previous entries, thanks to the collective trauma of surviving the Snap and then enduring the five years of the Blip; for example mocking Thor's weight gain and snarking at Carol for talking such a big game despite not having been there for Earth (though he does relent on the latter when Carol points out she has to be a one-woman Avengers team for all the other planets of the universe. He's back to being a lot more polite in Series/TheFalconAndTheWinterSoldier...before looping back around to irritability in Secret Invasion as a result of dealing with the Skrull conspiracy and Nick Fury's perceived culpability in the matter.

** In Secret Invasion, he rebukes Fury's reckless actions for their negative effects on the stability of the world. He also bluntly shuts him down when he attempts to appeal to their shared race, stating that their job is to be better then their "mediocre" predecessors, regardless of race.
