Chapter 142: "The Day of Unity" shows that King's soul was brought into the In Between Realm by his father, Papa Titan, who uses the last of his power to send him back to the world of the living alongside Amity.]]

** Since Chapter 101: "Helluva Dad", Luz starts a catchphrase with her use of "[[OhMyGods Titan's crack]]", which is used whenever someone is exasperated or things are going FromBadToWorse.

* ShipTease: During the "Underworld" Arc, he gets along with a girl named Laura, [[spoiler:who's an otter hailing from the world of Zootopia]], and Luz immediately jumps on board that ship. * ColorMotif: Her gold uniform symbolizes her standing as Glandus' Queen, her being the best and strongest student. [[spoiler:It ends up foreshadowing her replacing Hunter as the Golden Guard.]]

* FairPlayVillain: Emily had just enough decency to give Luz a chance to forfeit in their duel after [[spoiler:she transforms out of her cambion form]], but charges in when she refuses.

* BadassFamily: The Clawthornes definitely act as one, which includes Amity to a small degree since she's Lilith's goddaughter. [[spoiler:This also extends to both Camila and Cross, the latter being a Clawthorne by blood.]]

* LimitedSocialCircle: In the beginning Luz only spent time with Willow and Gus after befriending them, then befriended the troublemakers a few months before the start of the series. Both groupings solely hung out with each other but this was averted when Luz and Willow respectively befriended Amity and Skara: it went on to being subverted when that led to everyone becoming friends with Amelia, Cat, the Blight twins, Mattholomule and several other people. The original trio even lampshade how they've outgrown this in "Chapter 67: After the War".

* CurbStompBattle: Anyone who faces her in a battle always loses, even when they initially have the upper hand. Willow openly calls her out on her behavior during the moonlight conjuring, straining the friendship between the two and leading to her growing out of it.

* LeeroyJenkins: She often runs headfirst into a dangerous situation without a plan or thinking of her own safety. [[spoiler:Boscha uses this against her in "Exams to Survive", creating a strategy that was based on Luz attacking first.]] [[spoiler:Emperor Belos later uses this against her in "Prelude to War (Part 1)", fully expecting she'd come alone to break the Bards Against the Throne out of prison]]: it's the ensuing loss, being grounded and learning about [[spoiler:Belos' plans for her]] that she sheds this trait along with her IWorkAlone tendencies for good.

* LoserProtagonist: Due to being a human, Luz is treated like an outcast by the population of Bonesborough for most of her life and it doesn't change when she begins going to Hexside. It is slowly averted however, when she starts proving her worth.

* MagicMusic: She may have joined the Bard track for its artistic side, but Luz soon begins learning about the musical side and she takes to using Rocky after finding him. In "Prelude to War (Part 3)", she starts learning to play the lute.

* PowerGivesYouWings: [[spoiler:In "Good from the Bad", she gains a set of wings in her cambion form.]]

* RedMage: Initially she refused to multi-track until she knew she was ready for it. Now she's specializing in Bard (where she can express her creative side) and Beast-Keeping [[spoiler:(where she can hopefully learn how to control her cambion form.)]]

* SecretRelationship: Near the end of "Maternal Aspiration", Amity requested that she and Luz kept their relationship private so her parents wouldn't hear about it, and Luz agreed. It later became public in "Grom: The Musical (Part 2)".
* SecurityBlanket: Otabin, as she kept her own book ever since Eda read it to her after the [[spoiler:slayground incident]]. Before she met Willow and Gus, she made the main character her imaginary friend.

* SwappedRoles: In a reversal of canon, [[spoiler:Luz develops feelings for Amity ''and'' kisses her first]].
* TaughtByExperience: Willow telling her off for picking fights with people just to defend her friends caused Luz to rethink the kind of friend she is in order to be better. [[spoiler:Losing her first duel against Emperor Belos after taking him on alone]] led her to stop jumping head-first into a battle and to start planning things out.

* TomatoInTheMirror: [[spoiler:She believed she was cursed when she started transforming until Belos told her during their first meeting that she evolved into the same being as he did.]]

In order, she got trapped in the Forest of Fear, imprisoned by Belos, nearly petrified, witnessed Puck dying in front of her eyes, nearly killed by the Coachman, absorbed Maya's soul, got injured by Emily and Asi on top of Meteora trying to kill her and Amity during the school war, mauled Hunter thinking he made Amity disappear, encountered the Horned King who tried to steal Maya from her, had to cope with Amity, Willow, and Gus being sent to the Human Realm, and learned that a member of her godfamily is trying to kill her and all of witchkind. And she ''still'' doesn't know that Belos plans on possessing her to fight the enemies ''he'' made on the Day of Unity.]]

* YellowPurpleContrast: Has this with Emily, as Luz wears purple with her main outfit while Emily is associated with gold, be it through her uniform or [[spoiler:while acting as the Golden Guard]].

* InterspeciesAdoption: Eda's a witch, and she adopted Luz, a human. She still adopts King, a demon, later on.

* HasAType: Emily tends to become attracted to girls with the following traits: kindness, blue hair, and having a powerful [[SuperMode alternate form]]. She was attracted to Glinda for the first two, [[spoiler:Lindsay]] for the former and the latter, and [[spoiler:Zee]] for showing all three.

The Alchemist discovers during his examination of her that Willow's magical aura gives off higher readings than Terra, which may make her more powerful. Sure enough when the two fight each other, Willow unlocks a magical form that makes her far stronger than a Galdorstone-boosted Terra is. Unfortunately, this makes her the perfect replacement for Terra after Belos kills the crone.]]

* AlliterativeName: If he were to ever have to go by his mother's pre-marital name, that is. If he did, he'd be known as '''C'''ross '''C'''[[spoiler:lawthorne]].

** To Gus G. [[spoiler:They were both introduced in the "Human Realm" arc, yet while Cross wasn't of much importance when he was introduced, Gus G. was a major supporting player in helping Willow return home. Afterward, the boys ended up with SwappedRoles; Gus's prominece would put him a bit more OutOfFocus as Book 2 continued on while Cross would end up getting sucked into everyone's drama and receiving some of his own, joining the main cast as a result.]]

** Cross is from a NonHeteronormativeSociety, and yet he's the only confirmed character in the main cast who is straight.

* AdaptationSpeciesChange: Luz is still human, but [[spoiler: she starts turning into a black-scaled, winged, reptilian creature with black eyes containing glowing blue irises. Emperor Belos later reveals she's evolved into a cambion (a human infused with magic) due to her body adapting to the environment of the Boiling Isles, just like him. It becomes debunked in "Chapter 106: Highway to Mel", as her yellow eyes and use of a SuperScream strongly implies that she's really a Titan.]]

* AmbiguouslyHuman: She started out as human, but became infused with magic growing up in the Boiling Isles resulted in her evolution into a cambion. [[spoiler:This is later debunked when she uses the same kind of [[SuperScream scream power]] as King, implying she's becoming part Titan.]]

* LegFocus: PlayedForLaughs. People tend to comment on how Wonder Witch's costume is inappropriate because she wears a leotard which would show off her legs. However, Donna wears pink tight that cover them.

* AscendedExtra: When Cross was introduced, he was little more than a background character. Slowly he gained more prominence through his role in [[spoiler:Emily]]'s character arc, his romantic tension with Lindsay, and his getting roped into [[spoiler:Donna and Nina's own romance.]] All of this plus his unwilling team-ups with Luz's family ultimately earns him a spot among the main cast, making him the first male character to do so since Hunter was added and Jerbo & Barcus were removed[[note]]Notably, this also makes him the first OC to earn this accomplishment who wasn't created by the authors[[/note]].

* {{Irony}}: A guy studying in the Plant track is proficient in [[PlayingWithFire fire]] magic. Additionally, he's a natural with fire, but can balance it out with both [[MakingASplash water]] and [[AnIcePerson ice]] magic.

* AffectionateNickname: Luz typically calls him "G-Man" and Hunter occasionally calls him "Gossamer".

* TheTeam: Luz's friend group seems to have this dynamic but most of them tend to alternate roles often:
** Luz, being the HeroProtagonist and having a headstrong personality, falls into the role of TheLeader;
** Amity acts as TheLancer, but started out as a SixthRanger and doubles as TheHeart;
** Willow was TheLancer before Amity and would later share the role with her until she took up the role of TheBigGuy as per canon. She shows she can act as TheLeader in [[spoiler:the "Glandus War" arc]];
** Gus sees himself as the TheHeart, but his [[TheStrategist strategic mind]] and WeakButSkilled abilities showcase his strengths as TheSmartGuy;
** Viney proved herself to be TheHeart of the group because of her Healing prowess and her being more emotionally mature;
** Jerbo, in spite of his appearance, acted as TheBigGuy due to his Abominations;
** Barcus also played the role of TheSmartGuy on account of his Oracle abilities making him very StreetSmart;
** Skara serves as TheHeart alongside Amity and takes up her former position as the SixthRanger.
** Hunter initially acted as a SixthRanger and the TagalongKid, [[spoiler:but once his connection to the Emperor is revealed, he's labeled a SixthRangerTraitor.]]
** After becoming friends with Lumity, Boscha becomes the TagalongKid in the "Underworld" arc having plenty of GeniusBruiser moments.

Eda's older sister, Luz's adopted aunt and Amity's mentor [[spoiler:(as well as her godmother)]], Lilith had been known as the head of the Emperor's Coven for years. During the events of Book 1, she begins looking into why Emperor Belos has taken an interest in Luz [[spoiler:while using Amity to spy on her and Eda]]. By the end of Book 1, she betrays the coven to save her family and joins them in exile.

** Rather than the student-mentor relationship that went south due to a loss of respect by cheating, Amity and Lilith maintain said relationship because the duel didn't happen. [[spoiler:It's later revealed that Odalia named Lilith as Amity's godmother and she starts spending more time with her after learning about Luz.]] Their relationship still takes a hit when Lilith's actions here [[BrokenPedestal causes Amity to lose all respect for her]], but while they put in the work on repairing their relationship, [[spoiler:it sours again when some of Lilith's more unintentional misdeeds saw the light of day.]]

* AffectionateNickname: Downplayed in "Chapter 115: Thank Titan It's Frieday", where [[spoiler:Zee]] is shown to have dubbed her "Mily".

* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: Emily proves herself to be far more combat-capable in [[spoiler:human fighting techniques than Luz had ever been, having trained herself in Chinese Martial Arts and spending their whole duel in "Prelude to War (Part 2)" mopping the floor with Luz who only lands a single hit.]]

While they do go on a date in Chapter 121, the ship ends up sinking when Emily comes to fear hurting Lindsay if they date while Emily's still recovering. However, the same chapter plants seeds of Emily possibly falling for Zee since she shows support and understanding for Emily's situation.]]
