A fae who was banished from his homeworld, Avalon, in the past. While passing through the Boiling Isles, he took an interest in Luz's life and became one of her friends. He ultimately perished at Emperor Belos' hands in the Book 1 finale only for it to turn out that said death was only temporary: Puck's body was reconstituted in the Forest of Fear and he fell under the Inner Demon's control, becoming his unwitting ally.

** The hints that he was the Shapeshifter are as follows: he made the Slitherbeast cave (a location he knew of) his base, he used Fae dust to turn Dolly into a doll, and he stranded Amity, Willow and Gus on Earth instead of killing them because they're Luz's closest friends, so he knows how much they mean to her.
* ForgottenFallenFriend: Averted. Luz and Amity refuse to forget Puck following his death, using their friendship with him as a reminder to not carry grudges against the rest of their friends. Amity even decides to take his last name as her own after becoming nameless.
* TheGhost: He's frequently mentioned or alluded to in Book 2, his friends seeing him in a positive light while everyone else views him as a menace.

The former teacher of the Detention track. Half jackal, half genie, all Trickster Demon, he's a distant grandson of Anubis who encouraged his students' mixed-magic abilities and takes an interest in Luz and her capabilities.

* BenevolentGenie: Along with being the son of a djinn, Anu Bist is a trickster demon which thrive on causing mischief and chaos. However, he genuinely wishes to teach his students, encourages their mixing magic and wants to help them find their inner strength.
* ComicallySerious: He's a trickster demon; he loves telling riddles and causing mischief. This doesn't mean he doesn't take his teaching job seriously.
* DivineParentage: His mother was a djinn and his father a trickster demon and death god. Pretty much divine ''ancestry'' since he's a descendant of Anubis.
* LargeHam:
* MeaningfulRename: He resembles an anthropomorphic jackal and he decides to rename himself "Jack", which is also a common name for trickster and rebel archetypes in fairy tales and folklore.
* NoodleIncident: He's arm wrestled against a Yule Cat, a Cerberus, and the Sphinx. He also fought Emperor Belos at some point, but lost because the Emperor knew his weakness to iron.
* PutOnABus: [[spoiler:He was severely injured by Belos at the end of Book 1 and had to return to his lamp to recover while Kitsuni substituted for him at Hexside. He eventually recovered and [[TheBusCameBack returned]] in Chapter 53, but only stayed long enough to say goodbye to his students before becoming a born-again genie.]]

Currently known as Sly, he's a Fae who visited the Boiling Isles centuries ago during the Savage Ages. When the witches of the Boiling Isles refused to honor their deal, the Piper got even by stealing away an entire generation of witchlings.

* TheFairFolk: The Piper is a particularly infamous example of the Fae.
* FallGuy: [[spoiler:He ended up becoming this over the Collector kidnapping the witchlings.]]
* TheGhost: The closest he's gotten to an onscreen appearance in Book 1 is his depiction on a tapestry.
* GoodAllAlong: [[spoiler:Chapter 66 reveals that he wasn't actually the one who took a generation of witchlings during his last visit to the Boiling Isles.]]
* IHaveManyNames: According to Puck, like all Fae he changes his name a lot. Apparently most recently, he goes by Sly (a ShoutOut to ''WesternAnimation/TheElectricPiper''.)

* SmallRoleBigImpact: He's only mentioned in two chapters in the first book, but his [[spoiler:initially alleged]] actions are one of the main reasons why the Fae are banned from the Isles and unintentionally led to the creation of Abominations.
