* RomanticFalseLead: For Jane. Both tried very ''hard'' and made several attempts to stay together over the course of the series and they even ''did'' get married at one point, but since Rafael has come into the picture at the beginning of season 1, there’s always been something which divided them and/or made Jane circle back to Rafael, until Michael eventually accepted in season 5 that between he and Jane was over for good. In fact, he and Jane start the series having been together for two years, but his lies and her falling in love with Rafael make them split up. Then, they become close again and get back together halfway through season 2 after she broke up with Rafael, but they are separated again after getting married by [[spoiler:his sudden death mid-season 3]]. Then, there is the 3-year TimeSkip and Jane slowly finds her way back to Rafael, gets back together with him and when she is ready to move in with him and to get engaged to him, Michael [[spoiler:comes back from the dead]]. He tries to win her back since he still loves her and Jane takes some time to figure out if she still has feelings for him too, but eventually realizes that too much time has passed and too much has changed in their lives to rekindle their relationship and her OneTrueLove is Rafael, so they part ways one last time for good.

** Her FirstLove, Pablo Alonso Segura, manages to charm her into an engagement after only having been back in her life for a week.

''Then'' he breaks off with Jane. In Season 2, just when it seems that things are looking up for him and Jane, [[spoiler: he lies to her, they break up again, and ''then'' we find out his real mother is also a criminal overlord]].
* CareerVersusMan: RareMaleExample. He struggles to balance his commitment to Jane and their child and his commitments to the hotel, which he considers his father's legacy.

* CloudcuckoolandersMinder: Ends up as this to Luisa in Season 2, having to play the StraightMan to her more outrageous suggestions.
* DotingParent: Because of his own boatload of ParentalIssues, he's devoted to being the best father ever for Mateo, Anna, and Elsa. Having a lot of money certainly helps.
* DrowningMySorrows: He notably drinks more in the back episodes of season 1--and he has pretty good reason to.
* FormerTeenRebel: He has a shady past.
* FreudianExcuse: The reason for all his manipulations and desperation to keep Jane and Mateo near him is how absolutely ''screwed up'' his own familial history is.

just as skilled in the art of Xo's promiscuity manipulation as much as Petra, whom he stole from [[TheRival Lachlan]], seemingly out of spite, [[spoiler: and orders not above using underhanded tactics to ensure that Jane not and Michael never reconnect]]. Despite this, his kids are clearly his entire world and he donates to lose anonymous charities on the down-low. * CameBackWrong: [[spoiler:While Michael didn't ''die'', his severe amnesia makes him different from how he was before. He's now slow of speech, has a different accent, lacks Michael's goofy sense of humour, and is a ''dog person''.]]
* CareerVersusFamily: When he and Jane get together, is pressured by Rafael between his ''dangerous'' career as a cop, and Mateo's safety. He is willing to choose Jane and Mateo, but Jane stops him from quitting his job and lets Rafael know that.
* CareerVersusMan: Like [[{{Foil}} Rafael]], also finds himself in this situation in the season 2 premiere: [[spoiler:Jane and Rafael get Mateo back but he has to let Nadine, his only lead on the Sin Rostro case, go]]. He agrees.
* CheatedDeathDiedAnyway: Michael survives being shot by Rose, only to collapse and die half a season later. [[spoiler:Subverted when he turns out to be NotQuiteDead and returns with LaserGuidedAmnesia]].
* CowboyCop: Not an extreme example, but is one where Sin Rostro or Rafael Solano are concerned. He ignores his orders to not to talk to the contractor that built the tunnels beneath the Marbella and subsequently gets suspended for it. Also PlayedWith in that he'll compromise an investigation if it means making Jane happy. In Chapter 26, he asks for permission to for extreme measures to take down Sin Rostro. In Chapter 27, all the cowboy-copping gets him fired. [[spoiler:Subverted, this was faked so he could go undercover and get close to Nadine]]. Rafael even brings it up later in season two, but Michael admits that he's moved past this style, as it could put Jane and Mateo in danger.
* CrazyJealousGuy: Any indication of Jane with Rafael will set him on edge. At one point, he tries to convince Jane to quit her job in order to avoid him. [[spoiler:And in Chapter 27, immediately jumps to the conclusion that Rafael turned him in and caused him to lose his job[[note]]which, as it turns out, he was right about[[/note]], and initiates a fight with him ''while he's holding the baby carrier'']].

* EndearinglyDorky: Has a thing for doing goofy faces and impressions, which is a bit of an InsideJoke with him and Jane -- she loves it.
* FairCop: A detective with the Miami PD. So handsome, that Jane innocently [[StripperCopConfusion mistook him for a stripper]] when [[MeetCute he arrived in his Patrol uniform at her 21st birthday.]]
* FatalFlaw: His refusal to admit when he ''isn't'' fine, including to himself. This is well-illustrated in a flashback where little Michael is sick but says he isn't, just so he could go out and trick-or-treat. As an adult, [[spoiler: this has more dire consequences, and he dies because -- as his mother later tearfully acknowledges -- he ''should've'' gone to the hospital.]]
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: Although they have a shared criminal past, Michael became a (mostly) upstanding police detective while his brother Billy is still somewhat shady and prone to asking money from him.
* FormerTeenRebel: He and his brother stole cars in their teen years.
* GrandRomanticGesture: A subtler one, but incredibly moving nonetheless: [[spoiler: He has Alba teach him to say his wedding vows to Jane in Spanish.]]
* GreenEyedMonster: He's jealous of Rafael from the beginning, when he finds out that Jane is (mistakenly) carrying Rafael's baby, and this motivates his actions. It's unclear how much of his theory that Rafael is/is tied to Sin Rostro is because of genuine suspicion or jealousy that Rafael is with Jane. Highlighted by Nadine, who dismisses it entirely because she thinks he has a "vendetta." He eventually turns out to be right, but ''not'' in the way he suspects. It doesn't really go away, and in Chapter 27 [[spoiler: he ends up throwing Rafael into a glass table in front of Jane and Mateo because of a conclusion he quickly jumped to [[note]]which he was right about, but still, he could've put Mateo in danger.[[/note]]]].
* HappilyMarried: He and Jane eventually have a loving, stable marriage.
* HasAType: Both Jane and Andie are both excitable, romantic, idealistic {{nice girl}}s. The narrator even lampshades how similar they are.
* IdentityAmnesia: [[spoiler:After Rose electrified his brain, he not only cannot remember [[AmnesiacLover Jane]] but also anything about himself, his family, or his name (he goes by "Jason" now).]]
* IntergenerationalFriendship: Forms one with Rogelio. He was a bit irritated at first when Rogelio insisted on shadowing him for his show, but they end up getting along like a house on fire. It's even punctuated with a HandshakeSubstitute. This is, of course, a way for him to rile up Rafael (whom Rogelio disapproves of).
* KindheartedCatLover: Michael is a cat lover and generally a NiceGuy.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: [[spoiler:The opening to season 5 reveals the reason why he hasn't contacted Jane in four years to tell her he's alive is that he doesn't remember her at all.]]
* LousyLoversAreLosers: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. He's not horrendously bad at sex so much as he is... well, a ''realistic'' degree of skilled at it, with him overestimating his abilities to please until Jane lets him know he needs to improve.
* NiceGuy: One of the reasons Xo is on his side. Overall, he is a patient and friendly person to pretty much anyone that isn't a criminal or Rafael.
* NotQuiteDead: [[spoiler:The final moments "Chapter Eighty-One" show him alive, in Rafael's apartment.]]
* PutOnABus: [[spoiler:He returns to Montana in "Chapter Eighty-Eight" after Jane realizes she still loves Rafael.]]
* RichSuitorPoorSuitor: The poor suitor (working-class detective) to Rafael's Rich Suitor.

* AlwaysSecondBest: Petra can't help but see herself as always second to
Jane in Rafael's heart.
* TheBabyTrap: She ''tried'' this with Rafael's last sperm sample so she could guilt him into staying with her so she could get the money from her prenup,
but Luisa accidentally inseminates Jane instead. [[spoiler: In Season 2, it's revealed that ThereIsAnother sperm sample, and she inseminates herself with a turkey baster… and succeeds]]. Her late-term miscarriage prior to the first season is outright stated to be part of what caused Rafael to fall out of love with her.
* BestFriend: Becomes this to Jane throughout the course of the show
* BitchInSheepsClothing:
** Initially comes off as a sweet and loving wife, but is actually a GoldDigger trying to keep her marriage alive for the sake of the serious bank her prenup entailed.
** Though, by early-middle season 2, it's a DeconstructedTrope and part of the show's commentary on class and gender. It's clear that Petra had talent, dreams and interests before choosing to be a GoldDigger, and could have had a more fulfilling life ahead of her if she'd stuck to her goals and her identity. Like a ShadowArchetype of the ever-motivated, honest and ambitious Jane, Petra faced the same challenges (growing up without a father, sexism, classism, a struggling career), but abandoned
everything in his life, apparently thanks she worked for, created a wholly fake persona and relied on manipulating rich men because she's lacked ''real'' self-worth and felt powerless all along.
* ButtMonkey: For all that she's manipulative and scheming, things just don't go right for her. Highlights include her lover being murdered, then revealed
to electroshock therapy be alive and tries to kill her, Magda exploiting her at her convenience, her husband leaving her for another woman who was accidentally artificially inseminated by the hands of Rose.sperm sample Petra wanted for herself, [[spoiler: inseminating herself in an attempt to win him back and winding up having twins]], and ending up [[spoiler: taking the fall for her manipulative mother]]. And finally [[spoiler: being sedated by her long lost twin sister, twice.]]
* {{Blackmail}}: He finds out about Petra's affair and holds it above CharacterDevelopment: Goes from a manipulative gold digger to a genuinely well-meaning mother who sees Jane as a sister.

postpartum depression symptoms.]]
* CareerVersusFamily: DamselOutOfDistress: When he kidnapped by Roman Zazo, she seduces him in order to get a hold of his phone and Jane get together, uses it to call Michael--who didn't need to do all that much, because Petra ends up ''impaling Zaz'' in self-defense.
* DeadPersonImpersonation: "Petra"
is pressured by actually the name of a Czech girl who died suddenly, whose identity Natalia took over in order to run from Milos.
* DotingParent: Adores her two daughters and is more openly affectionate with them than anyone else.
* ElegantClassicalMusician: She used to be a street violinist; her skill was what drew Milos to her in the first place.
* EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas: Magda is one of Petra's primary concerns in life. She does ''not'' take it well when her mother inadvertently reveals she had been lying the whole time. Even after Magda's arrest, Petra still sees her as a source of comfort and advice.
* ExactEavesdropping: In the first season finale, she is about to enter a room to talk to
Rafael between right before hearing him tell Luisa that he wants Petra out of his ''dangerous'' career as a cop, life after manipulating her to suit his ends.
* FallGuy: For Magda, who [[spoiler: sets her up to be arrested in her place after the former murders Ivan]].
* FemmeFatale: She has no qualms using her sexual wiles
and Mateo's safety. He underhanded manipulations to get what she wants. The chyrons even call her a "Man-eater." Oh yeah, and she has ties to the Czech Mafia.
* FreudianExcuse: Petra's the way she
is willing because her mother (and only parental figure) was an emotionally abusive StageMom who only got worse after Petra's violent ex-boyfriend scarred and injured her for life in what seemed like an attempt on Petra's life, and she's been trying to choose make it up to her mother while constantly on the run from him. The trauma hit her pretty hard, and she seems to have developped a sort of survival mentality since. Not to mention that even during her marriage to Rafael, she has had to contend with both a miscarriage and his cancer, only to see him fall out of love with her (he secretely planed on leaving her even before he knew she'd done anything wrong).
* GoldDigger: (Seemingly) married Rafael for his money, although she seemed to have been genuinely in love with him at some point, and her feelings for him resurface a couple of times over the course of the show.
* HeelFaceTurn: Fully a good character by late season 3.
* HonoraryAunt: "Aunt Petra" to Mateo. Justified, since she's the mother of his sisters.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Even Petra has a heart, as it's becoming more and more visible, thanks in part to her growing [[OddFriendship friendship with Jane]]. In fact, she [[spoiler: secretly starts subletting the house that
Jane and Mateo, but Michael are renting, so that they could afford the rent]].
* MamaBear: Petra is very protective of her daughters, to the point that she [[spoiler:pushes Anezka off a balcony because the latter threatened them.]]
* ManipulativeBitch:
** Goes through increasingly convoluted plots in order to get money out of Rafael.
** Comes back to bite her in season four, when
Jane stops him from quitting R. accuses her of knowingly manipulating her way to [[spoiler:acquittal after she is accused of Anezka's murder at the cost of Jane R.'s life and career.]] Petra insists that she didn't mean for it to happen, it just turned out that way.
* MaternallyChallenged: During her pregnancy, she's scared of being that way. The postpartum depression after her daughters' birth does not help. After her postpartum medication takes effect, it becomes a DeconstructedTrope: she realizes that while she isn't very maternal and needs time for herself and her job, she does love her daughters and can care for them in her way, making sure they inherit her and Rafael's legacy and spend time with their father. She still sometimes mistakes one twin for the other, though.
* MsFanservice: Her mother had taught her that her beauty was her greatest weapon, and ''damn'' does she know how to use it.
* ProperlyParanoid: After spending time with Aaron, suspects that Aaron is really Roman pretending to be
his job and lets own twin brother. Fingerprint analysis by Michael confirms this.
* PsychoExGirlfriend: Sets up several plots seemingly just to screw over
Rafael know that.
* CareerVersusMan: Like [[{{Foil}} Rafael]],
after he ends their marriage. Played with--she's done some despicable things but is also finds himself in portrayed sympathetically, and she actually has a psycho ex-''boyfriend'', Milos, whom she's on the run from.
* SensualSlav: She's Czech and the local MsFanservice.
* SlashedThroat: Invokes
this situation in by having Milos pretend to do so to freak her mother off enough to throw off the disability.
* StreetMusician: She used to be a street violinist in Prague.
* TookALevelInJerkass: In season 3, after spending

taking a level in kindness, [[spoiler:she's full of resentment after being shot by Rose, only to collapse and die half a season later. [[spoiler:Subverted when he turns out to be NotQuiteDead paralyzed for three months without anyone noticing, and returns with LaserGuidedAmnesia]].

In Chapter 27, all the cowboy-copping gets him fired. [[spoiler:Subverted, this was faked so he could go undercover and get close to Nadine]]. Rafael even brings it up later in her family.
* TookALevelInKindness: Zig-zagged.
** She's still a bit of a bitch, but as of
season two, but 2 [[spoiler: she actively seems to be trying to be a better person for the sake of her daughters]] and is at least civil, when not [[VitriolicBestFriends outright friendly]], with Jane, [[spoiler: including secretly subsidizing a home for her and Michael admits that he's moved past to afford]].
** After her girls are born, however, [[spoiler:her Postpartum Depression gets the better of her and she thinks of running away and leaving everybody else to deal with her problems. It seems like she does, but

** Fully in place by late season 3. Petra genuinely wants a good familial relationship with both
Jane and Mateo in danger.
* CrazyJealousGuy: Any indication of Jane with

from a crime scene-though she's married and was secretly cheating with the murder victim-because he wants Jane to give Rafael and Petra her baby. Later hires pregnancy, she gives an epic one towards Rafael, after his shady brother to help him break into Rafael's safe.
* EndearinglyDorky: Has a thing for doing goofy faces and impressions, which
selfishness is a bit of an InsideJoke with him and Jane -- she loves it.
It doesn't really go away, and in Chapter 27 [[spoiler: he ends up throwing Rafael into a glass table in front of
preventing Jane and Mateo because of a conclusion he quickly jumped to [[note]]which he was right about, but still, he could've put Mateo in danger.[[/note]]]].
* KindheartedCatLover:
Michael is a cat lover and generally a NiceGuy.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: [[spoiler:The opening
from purchasing their dream home.
** Also gives one
to season 5 reveals the reason why he hasn't contacted Jane in four years to tell her he's alive is that he doesn't remember her at all.]]
* LousyLoversAreLosers: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. He's not horrendously bad at sex so much as he is... well, a ''realistic'' degree of skilled at it, with
him overestimating his abilities to please until Jane lets him know he needs to improve.
* PutOnABus: [[spoiler:He returns to Montana in "Chapter Eighty-Eight"
after Jane realizes she still loves Rafael.]]
* RichSuitorPoorSuitor: The poor suitor (working-class detective)
his continual piss-poor treatment and condescending attitude towards her, while refusing to Rafael's Rich Suitor.ever acknowledge or grow beyond [[{{Hypocrite}} his own flaws]].

* AdoptionAngst: He discovers in Season 3 that he is adopted, which causes a great personal crisis (since he had a tumultuous relationship with his overbearing father), a financial upheaval, and a largely unsuccessful search for his birth parents.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: Acts civil to Jane and Michael, [[spoiler: while constantly trying to find ways and petty excuses to break them up behind their backs]]. He gets better once he gets over Jane, and the two of them become AmicableExes.
* BreakHerHeartToSaveHer: Breaks up with Jane because he believes that staying away from him and his baggage is her best course of action. He later begins to consider this a mistake on his part.
* ButtMonkey: Rafael's life pretty much falls apart over the course of the first season--his marriage (which was already in a bad place to begin with) ends, his father is murdered by his criminal overlord stepmother, his mother resurfaces to tell him she was paid off to stay away from him, and the hotel begins to fail under his management.
* TheCasanova: Was formerly a playboy before his marriage to Petra. The chyrons take note of this and scratch out the "Playboy" and leave it with "[[HappyMarriageCharade Trapped Husband.]]"
* CharacterDevelopment: Slowly becomes more secure in his place in the family and less reliant on his father's money as the series goes on.
* TheCharmer: As part of his MillionairePlayboy past, he can ''really'' turn up the charm on women when he wants to.
* GreeneyedMonster: He's jealous of Michael, his closeness to Jane's parents, and his constant presence in his and Jane's lives, believing that Michael is trying to win her back. (He's not wrong, though.)
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: The huge guy to Jane's tiny girl, especially with the height difference (Justin Baldoni is 6'2" while Gina Rodriguez is 5'3").
* InformedAttractiveness: Rafael's handsomeness and overall attractiveness is commented on several times.
* InsecureLoveInterest:
** In a way, he is one to Jane--he breaks up with her in Chapter Nineteen because he believes he's in too dark a place for someone like her.
** Again with Jane in season 5. [[spoiler:After Michael is revealed to be alive and suffering from complete IdentityAmnesia (thanks to Rose electrocuting his brain repeatedly), Rafael is worried that Jane (who chose Michael over Rafael way back in season 2) is going to leave him for Michael.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's a philanderer, a supposedly reformed Bad-Boy, who is just as skilled in the art of manipulation as much as Petra, whom he stole from [[TheRival Lachlan]], seemingly out of spite, [[spoiler: and not above using underhanded tactics to ensure that Jane and Michael never reconnect]]. Despite this, his kids are clearly his entire world and he donates to anonymous charities on the down-low. He dials back on the "jerk" and gets more of the "heart of gold" following the TimeSkip.
* LadykillerInLove: His cancer diagnosis certainly helped in making him realize he needed to change his womanizing ways, but it's shown in the flashbacks that he and Petra ''did'' actually fall in love. From then onward, his relationships are serious when he can help it.
* ManipulativeBastard: As said above, the man is no stranger to using people and situations around him to get what he wants. As revealed in that he was playing Petra to get her to give him her shares of the hotel, [[spoiler: and had turned in Michael to keep him and Jane from getting back together]] and playing on her emotions for him to get her to [[spoiler:turn her mother in for pushing Alba]]. He generally gets along best with Petra when he's about to stab her in the back.
* MillionairePlayboy: He used to be one, shown in a flashback where he attends a dinner celebrating [[TheRival Lachlan]]'s promotion with a girl on his arm… and then schmoozes on Petra, Lachlan's ''then-fiancee'', seemingly to get back at him.
* MrFanservice: Frequently seen wearing tight shirts or [[ShirtlessScene no shirt at all]].
* ObliviousAdoption: Season 3 reveals that he was born in Italy and given to Elena around the time she lost a baby -- he's not the Solanos' biological son. [[spoiler:To his relief, he finds out that his deceased birth parents were normal people.]]
* ParentalIssues: A ''boatload''. His father was never the best dad and was always critical of his actions, while his mom walked out on him for money. Because of never having a working family model while growing up, he wants to be a good father to Mateo.

* TookALevelInJerkass: Season 2 has shown him become incredibly petty with Jane and Michael, and extremely selfish in regards to Mateo. He's much nicer to them by Season 3, though he's still a ManipulativeBastard towards Petra.
* UptownGirl: Rafael is very rich. Jane isn't. This is the reason Jane (and Xo) are a bit anxious about her developing relationship with Rafael, because they're "from two different worlds." It's also a frequent cause of friction regarding their co-parenting of Mateo, since Rafael doesn't want Mateo to struggle with money, while Jane doesn't want him to get used to wealth.
* TheUnfavourite: Emilio coddled Luisa and was always more critical towards Rafael.
* WellDoneSonGuy: Ever since bouncing back from cancer, Rafael's been trying to get his father's approval (as his father had considered him a disappointment before).
* {{Workaholic}}: He throws himself into his work once he and Jane break up.
* WorkingWithTheEx: Once Petra manages to become a major shareholder at the hotel, she and Rafael are forced to work together to manage it.

Star of popular telenovela ''The Passions of Santos''. Also Jane's biological father,

* AltarTheSpeed: [[spoiler: Milos proposes to her in Chapter 26 and they're married by Chapter 27. Jane and Rafael give her an out by giving her material she can hold over Milos, but she stays with him for her own reasons (once she realizes that he's still dangerous, listening to her every conversation using bugs)]].
* AlwaysSecondBest: Petra can't help but see herself as always second to Jane in Rafael's heart.
* TheBabyTrap: She ''tried'' this with Rafael's last sperm sample so she could guilt him into staying with her so she could get the money from her prenup, but Luisa accidentally inseminates Jane instead. [[spoiler: In Season 2, it's revealed that ThereIsAnother sperm sample, and she inseminates herself with a turkey baster… and succeeds]]. Her late-term miscarriage prior to the first season is outright stated to be part of what caused Rafael to fall out of love with her.
* BestFriend: Becomes this to Jane throughout the course of the show
* BitchInSheepsClothing:
Like a ShadowArchetype of the ever-motivated, honest and ambitious Jane, Petra faced the same challenges (growing up without a father, sexism, classism, a struggling career), but abandoned everything she worked for, created a wholly fake persona and relied on manipulating rich men because she's lacked ''real'' self-worth and felt powerless all along.
* ButtMonkey: For all that she's manipulative and scheming, things just don't go right for her. Highlights include her lover being murdered, then revealed to be alive and tries to kill her, Magda exploiting her at her convenience, her husband leaving her for another woman who was accidentally artificially inseminated by the sperm sample Petra wanted for herself, [[spoiler: inseminating herself in an attempt to win him back and winding up having twins]], and ending up [[spoiler: taking the fall for her manipulative mother]]. And finally [[spoiler: being sedated by her long lost twin sister, twice.]]
* CharacterDevelopment: Goes from a manipulative gold digger to a genuinely well-meaning mother who sees Jane as a sister.
* ChildrenRaiseYou: Played with. Her daughters' upcoming birth causes her to overall become nicer, although [[spoiler:she winds up with postpartum depression symptoms.]]
* DamselOutOfDistress: When kidnapped by Roman Zazo, she seduces him in order to get a hold of his phone and uses it to call Michael--who didn't need to do all that much, because Petra ends up ''impaling Zaz'' in self-defense.
* DeadPersonImpersonation: "Petra" is actually the name of a Czech girl who died suddenly, whose identity Natalia took over in order to run from Milos.
* ExactEavesdropping: In the first season finale, she is about to enter a room to talk to Rafael right before hearing him tell Luisa that he wants Petra out of his life after manipulating her to suit his ends.
* FallGuy: For Magda, who [[spoiler: sets her up to be arrested in her place after the former murders Ivan]].
* FemmeFatale: She has no qualms using her sexual wiles and underhanded manipulations to get what she wants. The chyrons even call her a "Man-eater." Oh yeah, and she has ties to the Czech Mafia.
* FreudianExcuse: Petra's the way she is because her mother (and only parental figure) was an emotionally abusive StageMom who only got worse after Petra's violent ex-boyfriend scarred and injured her for life in what seemed like an attempt on Petra's life, and she's been trying to make it up to her mother while constantly on the run from him.
In fact, she [[spoiler: secretly starts subletting the house that Jane and Michael are renting, so that they could afford the rent]].
* MamaBear: Petra is very protective of her daughters, to the point that she [[spoiler:pushes Anezka off a balcony because the latter threatened them.]]
* ManipulativeBitch:
** Goes through increasingly convoluted plots in order to get money out of Rafael.
** Comes back to bite her in season four, when Jane R. accuses her of knowingly manipulating her way to [[spoiler:acquittal after she is accused of Anezka's murder at the cost of Jane R.'s life and career.]] Petra insists that she didn't mean for it to happen, it just turned out that way.
* ProperlyParanoid: After spending time with Aaron, suspects that Aaron is really Roman pretending to be his own twin brother. Fingerprint analysis by Michael confirms this.
* PsychoExGirlfriend: Sets up several plots seemingly just to screw over Rafael after he ends their marriage. Played with--she's done some despicable things but is also portrayed sympathetically, and she actually has a psycho ex-''boyfriend'', Milos, whom she's on the run from.
* SensualSlav: She's Czech and the local MsFanservice.
* SlashedThroat: Invokes this by having Milos pretend to do so to freak her mother off enough to throw off the disability.
* StreetMusician: She used to be a street violinist in Prague.
* TookALevelInJerkass: In season 3, after spending season 2 taking a level in kindness, [[spoiler:she's full of resentment after being paralyzed for three months without anyone noticing, and returns to the warpath against Rafael.]] This is subverted -- her actions are justifiably as a result of insecurity and paranoia, and she genuinely wants to protect the hotel and her family.
* TookALevelInKindness: Zig-zagged.
** She's still a bit of a bitch, but as of season 2 [[spoiler: she actively seems to be trying to be a better person for the sake of her daughters]] and is at least civil, when not [[VitriolicBestFriends outright friendly]], with Jane, [[spoiler: including secretly subsidizing a home for her and Michael to afford]].
** After her girls are born, however, [[spoiler:her Postpartum Depression gets the better of her and she thinks of running away and leaving everybody else to deal with her problems. It seems like she does, but this is DoubleSubverted once the viewers realize who they saw running away: Petra's twin Anezka, coming to meet her.]]
** Fully in place by late season 3. Petra genuinely wants a good familial relationship with both Jane and Rafael and works towards that end.
* VitriolicBestFriends: She and Jane argue a lot, but after a long time of animosity the two come to see each other as family, to the point they're practically sisters.
-->'''Jane''': You know I ''love'' you.\\
'''Petra''': Yeah, but do you ''like'' me?\\
''(...)''\\
'''Jane''': I grew up without a sister, now it feels like I have one!\\
'''Petra''': Me too!
* WhatTheHellHero:
** While heavily hormonal from her pregnancy, she gives an epic one towards Rafael, after his selfishness is preventing Jane and Michael from purchasing their dream home.
** Also gives one to him after his continual piss-poor treatment and condescending attitude towards her, while refusing to ever acknowledge or grow beyond [[{{Hypocrite}} his own flaws]].

Jane's boyfriend of two years, a police detective.

Added DiffLines:

* AmnesiacLover: After recovering from his surgery in season 3, he jokes about not remembering Jane. [[spoiler:In season 5, he's legitimately forgotten not just Jane but everything in his life, apparently thanks to electroshock therapy at the hands of Rose.]]
* {{Blackmail}}: He finds out about Petra's affair and holds it above her head so she'll stay with Rafael and get the baby off his hands.
* TheBusCameBack: [[spoiler:He makes one last appearance in “Chapter Ninety-Eight” for closure with Jane, with a new wife and a baby on the way.]]
* DeadpanSnarker: He tends to tone it down around Jane, but he does have his moments.
-->'''Michael''': Are you okay?\\
'''Petra''': Just feeling a little nauseous.\\
'''Michael''': Probably just karma.
* DirtyCop: Removes Petra's necklace from a crime scene-though she's married and was secretly cheating with the murder victim-because he wants Jane to give Rafael and Petra her baby. Later hires his shady brother to help him break into Rafael's safe.
