* WithFriendsLikeThese: While he always pulls through for his rider in the end, that still doesn't stop him from attacking his rider most of the time. Though mainly due to who Snotlout is it makes sense why Hookfang would be more rough around the edges with him.

* UnstoppableRage: [[spoiler: We see a few glimpses of how terrifying he can be when his trainer/friend Hiccup is threatened. The first one was when Hiccup was tackled to the ground by Astrid when she sees Toothless nearby. Toothless, taking it as Astrid attacking Hiccup, goes absolutely mental and charges at her, Hiccup snaps him out of it but even as he was introducing Astrid to him Toothless was giving her an ''absolutely terrifying'' DeathGlare as well as a snarl to remind her that he still wasn't finished with her. Later when Hiccup's life is in danger in the fighting ring, Toothless hears his cries, proceeds to speed through the forest, jump through into the ring and deliver a CurbStompBattle on the offending dragon. In the second movie when Drago orders the Bewilderbeast to end Hiccup, Toothless dives to take the blast, then blows the ice prison up, declaring to all that his BerserkButton is well and truly ''pressed''. He then channels a Godzilla impersonation that is far more accurate than a twenty-foot-long animal has any right to pull off]].

* AdaptationalBadass: Horrorcow (Fishlegs's dragon from the books) was a Basic Brown (the second smallest and most common dragon species after the Common-or-Garden Dragon) who was a vegetarian. Meatlug is a much larger Gronkle and an ExtremeOmnivore.

* EarlyInstallmentCharacterDesignDifference: While she is a dark grungy brown in the first film and the [[WesternAnimation/GiftOfTheNightFury holiday short film]], she is recolored to be a lighter brown in the tv series and the sequels.

* MundaneUtility: In "The Iron Gronkle", Fishlegs discovers that by ingesting specific metals Meatlug can regurgitate a new alloy, Gronkle Iron, which is lighter than period iron but significantly stronger as well. In "Night of the Hunters II", he discovers Riker's dragon hunters have perfected Gronkle Iron and steals the formula from them.

* SpinAttack: The "Gale Force Gronkle." The downside is it leaves Fishlegs horribly dizzy.

* BlowYouAway: Astrid discovers he can create a powerful wind attack by clapping his wings together.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Generally indifferent to his owner and tends to cause intentional harm to him for a quick laugh, but always proves to care about him when the chips are down.

* WithFriendsLikeThese: While he always pulls through for his rider in the end, that still doesn't stop him from being a massive jerk most of the time.

* DisabledLoveInterest: Inverted. Toothless is the deuteragonist of the franchise and has a prosthetic tail. And in the third film, he becomes mates with an unnamed Light Fury.

* BadassAdorable: He's one of the very few dragons who are traditionally cute rather than UglyCute... and he’s got a BreathWeapon that’s basically a WaveMotionGun built into his throat.

* MysteriousPast: Toothless's life before Hiccup is largely a complete mystery. We know he was helping the dragons that raided Berk for food, and the series reveals he had a rivalry with a certain Whispering Death.

* AllAnimalsAreDogs: [[ZigZaggingTrope Zig-zagged]], her design and behavior are both very bird-like but she occasionally displays dog-like qualities, such as a love of playing fetch.

* SmarterThanYouLook: His design is even more ridiculous and exaggerated than most of the other dragons, and when you see him going straight at Toothless with his mouth ''wide open'', you expect him to suffer the same fate as one Terrible Terror in the movie. Except that he dodges Toothless' blast and immediately goes back into the water, where he can hide and pull surprise attacks on the Vikings. He [[FridgeBrilliance doesn't even have the ability to fall for that fate]] given [[MakeMeWannaShout his unique breath weapon]].

Although not always well behaved, the Hooligan Tribe's dragons have made themselves at home in Berk and live with them. Naturally this was not a smooth change, but they have integrated with their human allies.
