* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: Nobody likes him; he's the village pariah because he's scrawny and usually messes everything up. In keeping with the trope, things get better for him after he ends the Dragon Wars. In the books, Snotlout nicknames him 'Hiccup the Useless'.
* AlliterativeName: Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III. It's [[AllThereInTheManual never said in full]] in the movie but it's canon.
* AsleepForDays: Hiccup wakes up several days after the final battle with Toothless watching over him. In the books, however, he is asleep for days and wakes up [[spoiler: just in time to see Toothless wake up during being burned alive in a Viking funeral, after he goes into a healing sleep coma after badly injuring himself saving Hiccup from the Green Death, where he then flies through the sky on fire, before extinguishing himself.]]

** BadassPacifist: His role in the movies, since the "Vikings vs. dragons" conflict doesn't exist in the books. His ability to tame dragons comes from Hiccup being friendly instead of defending himself. This takes more courage than killing them on sight.
* [[ABoyAndHisX A Boy And His Dragon]]: With Toothless of course.
* ClassicalAntiHero: Originally a Type one, a wimp who nobody really likes. Compared to the paragon hero his father acts like, Hiccup's runtiness is constantly mocked. Even his ingenuity in making newer weapons was mocked because while being smart about hunting and trapping and killing dragons is a good thing, none of what Hiccup created seemed to work. Eventually, he accepts himself and all his flaws, turning them into his strengths and would become a hero in the eyes of his village.
* DeadpanSnarker: It's such a defining trait, being held hostage by Alvin doesn't stop him from dishing it out. A lot of the series' funny moments is mostly him and his often witty one-liners.
* GuileHero: Stoick wants him to be an ActionHero, but Hiccup is much better with smarts and cunning. In fact, it was due to his intellect that he [[spoiler: was the first person to solve a poem-based puzzle that nearly destroyed Stoick's and Gobber's friendship. This was because the puzzle was created by a GuileHero himself]].
** That said, Hiccup has become quite capable physically by ''Defenders of Berk'', facing off with [[spoiler: Dagur the Deranged]] in single combat while [[spoiler: Toothless was trapped by bolas]].
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Often uses his sarcasm to make fun of himself on occasion. At comedic and dramatic moments.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: An inter-species example. With Toothless, a Night Fury dragon.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: At the beginning of the film, Hiccup desperately wants to be like the other Vikings and kill his own dragon, which means...

* JockDadNerdSon: His first scene shows a miniature ballista he invented because he couldn't heave the projectile himself. His dad is not impressed.

Hiccup is [[TearJerker quite afraid of forgetting her in Riders of Berk]]. [[spoiler:It turns out she's alive in ''How to Train Your Dragon 2'', and every bit the dragon trainer Hiccup is (and then some).]]

* AesopAmnesia: In "Terrible Two", he causes problems because he trusted a strange dragon over Toothless. He didn't learn his lesson because in "Heather Report", he trusted a strange girl over Astrid. Downplayed in "We Are A Family Part 2", where he is ''very'' reluctant to trust Mildew but ultimately does so. [[spoiler: Like the previous occasions, this is a horrible idea because Mildew used him to learn dragon training which he passed onto Alvin.]] A storyboard of an unused intro by Hiccup says this has less to do with amnesia and more to do with Hiccup simply being too trusting.
* AmazonChaser: A large part of his crush on Astrid is because of her ActionGirl-ish qualities. Take a look at her introduction: she's fighting dragons amid flames and Hiccup has the 'hearts in his eyes' expression.
* ArtificialLimbs: Hiccup loses his left foot during the battle with the Green/Red Death in the movie. It's replaced with a metal prosthetic. Leads to AngstWhatAngst as he seems to adjust to it very quickly; in the series other characters make a bigger deal out of it than he ever does.
* ArcherArchetype: Though he is on the warmer side of the things compared to colder examples of this trope.
* BadassOnPaper: He looks like a scrawny teenage kid with a knack for inventing, but he ''did'' create the art of dragon taming, ended the war, and instigated the demise of the Red Death.
* BadassTeacher: Slowly becoming the second part as the main teacher of the Dragon Academy.
* TheBeastmaster: He learns how to tame and train dragons.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Hiccup is a very pleasant person and easy to get along with, but he can be quite terrifying if you piss him off. Dragon taming aside, he displays his anger in "Out Cast Part 1" where he gets furious with Snotlout in regards to getting Astrid in danger, and suspends him from the Academy. The rest of the children were surprised to see him like this. Keep in mind he ended the war with the dragons by killing the Red Death, and he is ''very'' protective of his dragon and friends. Dagur the Deranged discovered this the hard way.
* BigOlEyebrows: Just look at that picture!
* BiggerStick: Discussed. His friends sometimes wonder how much of his success is due to his own skill, and how much is due to being the rider of an absolutely fantastic dragon. Of course, when they attempt to test this by having the group train Terrible Terrors, Hiccup quickly teaches his to blow things up with impressive accuracy.
* BlackSheep: In the movies, as an inventor and scientist in a society of warriors.
** BornInTheWrongCentury: In the 21th century [[RealLife here]], Hiccup might be bullied, but at least he'd have [[{{Geek}} a niche in society where he belonged]], and his intelligence would be recognized. In the films' setting, he's treated as a child [[spoiler: and disowned by his family and tribe for trying to train a particular species of animal instead of killing it on sight.]] Instead, he has to make his own niche.

* BrainyBrunette: In the film and TV series.
* BreakoutCharacter: Along with Toothless. The fans fell in love with him. His humor, {{Adorkable}} nature, his life in the village, inventiveness, bond with Toothless, and general NiceGuy attitude. They loved it all.
* BrokeYourArmPunchingOutCthulhu: In this case, Lost Your Leg Punching Out The Frackin' Huge Volcano Dragon. His lack of angst about this implies it was WorthIt.
* ButtMonkey: In the books to almost everyone else ''because'' he was born to the chief of the village. He feels very inadequate compared to the tough warriors he's descended from.
* CatchPhrase:

** "You just gestured to ''all'' of me."
* TheChainsOfCommanding: Felt that when he had to consider kicking Snotlout out of the academy. His father pointed out that he can't always be both a good friend and a good leader at the same time, and that as a future chief he will have to put Berk above himself and his friends.
* ChickMagnet: Hiccup has won the affections of both Astrid and Ruffnut, the former who he started a relationship with. Hiccup has the largest female fanbase of the entire cast, except maybe [[BadassAdorable Toothless]].

** With Stoick. It takes a while for both to realize they have the same hardheaded tendencies about things they truly believe and won't listen to arguments against it lightly.
** With Toothless. A significant turning point in the film is when he musters up the courage to look into Toothless' eyes. Upon seeing the fear there, he realizes that dragons are not, as he'd been taught from childhood, a mindless AlwaysChaoticEvil race that wants to kill everyone.
* RedIsHeroic: In the sequel, Hiccup's new suit contains one of his shoulder pads with Berk's symbol painted red.
* RelationshipCeiling: His relationship with Astrid is held back in the TV show, although the ShipTease is rampant.
* ScienceHero: Along with wit, Hiccup also prefers to resort to his amazing inventions and gadgets to help.
* ShroudedInMyth: It's implied (in the "Portrait of Hiccup" episode) that no matter what Hiccup does, Viking mythology in the future will portray him as a fearless, tough, fire-breathing badass admired by everyone- because that's what Vikings ''do''. They make awesome ballads out of their heroes' exploits even if they must [[VeryLooselyBasedOnATrueStory warp the truth]] to do it. Hiccup finds this exceedingly depressing since he spent his whole childhood ignored and degraded because he ''didn't'' fit Viking standards of strength.
* TheSouthpaw: Shown subtly in the film, which is accurate to the book portrayal. Hiccup writes with his left, and any closeups on his control of Toothless' prosthetic tail-fin are on the left stirrup. His clumsiness may be a factor of having to use right-handed objects, or his weak hand, or both.
* [[SwissArmyWeapon Swiss Army Shield]]: His own invention and personal weapon, it's a shield that can be used not only as a shield, but also fires a grappling hook and transforms into a crossbow.
* TranquilFury: He was ''very'' angry with Snotlout in "Cast Out Part 1" when his latest attempt to hog the glory almost killed Astrid, keeping composed as he sternly told him he was suspended.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: A lot of people tend to think Hiccup is just the scrawny, nerdy, weirdo...then they actually see him in action.

** In the movie he never quits striving for his father's respect, but as the story progresses he's able to put other priorities first.
** Despite Stoick's acceptance of dragons in the series, Hiccup still has some hang ups.

* DorkKnight: Hiccup is a SociallyAwkwardHero who became the top contender for {{Badass}} in Berk.
* ExpectingSomeoneTaller: Alvin couldn't believe that the famous "Dragon Conqueror" was 'Stoick's little embarrassment'.
* MadeOfIron: Has survived very lengthy falls, nearly on the receiving end of fire blasts, smashing into several hard things, and even ''took a direct lightning strike'' and is still fine.

The movie follows a similar path; he can't talk ''with'' dragons, but he can communicate his feelings ''to'' them very well, and this is because he's compassionate and patient enough to look for intelligence where everyone else sees evil.
* SquishyWizard: Subverted. Snotlout and several others assume Hiccup would be useless without Toothless, but it turns out Hiccup is still quite capable on his own and can kick ass using just his smarts and tools.
* StepfordSnarker: It's heavily implied that the main reason Hiccup is so sarcastic because it was a way to deal with the constant shunning from his tribe, teasing from his peers, and disappointment from his own father. Now sarcasm is just another part of his character.

** On a more serious note, Alvin is this. All we know is that the events surrounding Alvin's banishment is not someone he wants brung up and gets angry quickly, which Hiccup found out when he tried questioning him about it.

* DemotedToExtra: According to some behind-the-scenes content, Gothi was intended to be a Mage who would've foretold of Hiccup making peace with the Dragons and the Vikings. However the writers felt it took up too much time for her to be established and that Hiccup's friendship with Toothless was a better indicator of what was to happen in the film.
* [[EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep Everyone Calls Her Gothi]]: In old Norse, Gothi is the title of a priest, not an actual name. Admittedly, it is the masculine form, but it still fits with her use of divination and general reverence from the community.

* AntagonisticOffspring: Implied to have been this offscreen for his dad before murdering him.
* AxCrazy: He's known to have done several really cruel things to some of the Vikings teens, such as locking Fishlegs in a cage for three days and using Hiccup as a knife-throwing target. This is more apparent when arrives. He later tries to behead half of the twins' Zippleback and in "The Night and The Fury" he is actively hunting dragons.
* {{Badass}}: Fought Alvin one-on-one and held his own. While Alvin did get the upper-hand eventually, that's pretty impressive against a guy who can match Stoick.
* BadBoss: If his behavior in "A View to a Skrill" means anything, he is this to the tribe given he nonchalantly threw one of his soldiers off the boat for disagreeing with his order and [[BlackComedy continuously did so several more times when he got back on it]].
* BigBad: As of "A View to a Skrill", he has seemingly killed Alvin and usurped control of the Outcasts.

However, before the latest treaty signing, it is implied Oswald died of unspecified circumstances, and either way his son Dagur took command of the tribe.

* NamesToTrustImmediately: What's not to like about a guy whose epitaph is 'the Agreeable'?

Even if he doesn't fit inside the house (his mouth is wider than Stoick's body) you would still expect him to pop up more. [[spoiler:Then he gets PutOnABus to protect some adolescent Thunderdrums on Dragon Island.]]
* FireForgedFriends: Bonded with Stoick by fighting off a horde of wild boars.
* MeaningfulName: Blending 'Thor' because of Thunderdrom's legendary connection to the lightning god and 'tornado' because of its strength.
* PapaWolf: To a group of adolescent Thunderdrums in "Bing! Bang! Boom!", so much so that [[spoiler:Stoick ultimately sets Thornado free to protect them on Dragon Island.]]

* {{Acrofatic}}: Rather subtle in that Meatlug can keep up with the group despite her appearance and the fact the rider is Fishlegs; she is also pretty agile in combat too. Her short wings and it's hover ability also make her far more resistant against strong winds than normal dragons with large wings.
* BruiserWithASoftCenter: Fishlegs mentions several times that she is as much a sweetheart as she is a hitter.
* ExtremeOmnivore: Gronckles can eat rocks and regurgitate them as flaming boulders. Meatlug and Fishlegs have trained so she can do this in combat by catching catapulted enemy boulders ''in her mouth'' and sending them back.

Fishlegs's Terror, Iggy, which he trained to fetch objects by cue cards.\\
Snotlout's Terror, which he "trained" to bite things (mostly himself) and be nearly impossible to remove once it does.\\
Ruffnut and Tuffnut's twin Terrors, Butt and Head, which they trained to run into each other.

* ChekhovsGun: All their unique skills came in handy for rescuing Meatlug from the Outcasts.
* EarlyBirdCameo: Each of the Terrors uses a model that was seen around Berk before. For example, Snotlout's was the one that was knocked out by Gobber's stench.

** In one the shorts, The Book of Dragons, we learn about several more dragons. Some have appeared in the show proper, others, like the Snaptrapper and Timberjack, haven't.
** {{Foreshadowing}} / EarlyBirdCameo: A lot of times, dragons that are shown or mentioned in the book pop up later in shorts of the television series itself.
* BreathWeapon: Almost all dragon species have them, and most commonly they breath fire, which is created by expelling a flammable gas and then igniting it with sparks from a mechanism in the mouth/throat. Certain species have more unique weapons, though.
* MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily: Generally, the bigger the head the more teeth it has. The current kings, however, are the Whispering Death (which has six rows of teeth that can rotate like a rock-cutter) and the Snaptrapper (which has four heads, each of which has three toothy jaws).
* PredatorsAreMean: There's a certain invocation of this. Canonically, all of the "friendly" species of dragon are piscovores (fish-eaters) and have no interest in animal flesh. Those few that explicitly or implicitly do eat non-fish meat, however, have been villains -- first the Whispering Death, and then the Flightmare, who explicitly eats humans to boot.
* UnreliableNarrator: Several facts about the book are shown to be wrong, including that the Scauldron DOES have venom ("Dragon Flower"), and in regards to some dragon types it knows nothing (case in point: Night Furies).

Small Stoker class dragons, Terrible Terrors may be small but they are no less dangerous than their larger kin amongst the dragons.

* InstantMessengerPigeon: Hiccup and Fishlegs turn them into this in "Appetite for Destruction".
* KillerRabbit: They are about the size of a medium-sized cat. That won't stop them from attacking larger foes. The fact that, according to the Book of Dragons short, they're social dragons who tend to hang out in dozens-strong packs, makes them even more dangerous.
* MythologyGag: They look just like the book's version of Toothless.
* PintsizedPowerhouse: Like all dragons, it is stronger than its size implies.
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: Especially when one sleeps next to Hiccup because he gave the dragon a fish.
* TeamPet: Due to its size, there's no one small enough to ride one. That doesn't mean they aren't liked all the same. "Worst in Show" has the riders each adopting one in a competition to see who the best trainer is. No one wins since they get distracted by an attack from Alvin.
** Hiccup and Fishlegs have plans to use them as carrier pigeons to deliver messages to Berk from far away, calling it "Air Mail".
* ZergRush: While vicious on its own, a single Terrible Terror is not too much of a threat. But they are social creatures and tend to work in packs.

!!Hideous Zippleback
->Introduced: the ''HowToTrainYourDragon'' movie.
The iconic Fear Class dragon, this two-headed dragon exemplifies the bizarre nature of its class with its two heads which must work in tandem to be dangerous. One head breathes the gas, the other lights it, resulting in major explosions. The gas itself is also dangerous, but only with long term exposure.

* KnockoutGas: The gas emitted by the right head can be this; after all, breathing flammable gas is never a good thing.
* MultipleHeadCase: Inverted in that the two heads work together quite well, with one providing flammable gas, and the other a pilot light.
* MultipleTailedBeast: Two heads means two tails.
* OrganAutonomy: The two heads of a Hideous Zippleback are distinct and do not share each other's thoughts. If the heads start arguing, the dragon can stall out, leaving it vulnerable to attack.
* StuffBlowingUp: Zipplebacks can create explosions when one head breathes gas and the other head generates sparks that ignite it.
* WeaksauceWeakness: Throw a bucket of water onto the head that sparks the gas and it is unable to light its gas. That said, finding the right head is the trick.

!!Gronckle
->Introduced: the ''HowToTrainYourDragon'' movie.
The iconic Boulder Class dragon, Gronckles are relatively small and sluggish dragons, but extremely tough and strong.

* DumbMuscle: Gronckles are generally lazy and easygoing, but rouse them, and they're as temperamental and direct as an angry rhino.
* ExtremeOmnivore: It can eat rocks. And its BreathWeapon depends on this fact.
* LimitBreak: In the movie, it is stated they only have enough fuel for six shots. Meatlug and other Gronckles can be seen firing more shots during the series.
* MagmaMan: The Gronckle is one of the few dragons that doesn't directly produce flame. Instead, it gobbles up rocks and mouthfuls of soil and then heats them to a molten state inside its belly. This superheated rock is then spat out at targets as distinctive fireballs.
** With the right rock, it can also produce Gronckle iron, a lightweight metal that is tougher than period iron and excellent for weapon and armor crafting. Though whether it's a real material under a different name or not is unspecified.
* MightyGlacier: The slowest of the rider-sized dragons, but tough and its magma attack is pretty powerful.
** It can even stagger a Screaming Death simply by ramming into it and keeps coming back for more!
* MixAndMatchCritters: The Gronckle looks like a cross between a bulldog, a bumblebee, and a toad.
* MundaneUtility: Amongst the dragons, Gronckles have the most of this. They can hover in place, they can ingest rocks to make materials (for example, with sandstone they can make glass), and can carry significant loads while flying.

!!Deadly Nadder

The Deadly Nadder is the iconic Sharp Class dragon, a category of dragons distinguished by their natural arsenal of spines. Amongst the most avian-looking dragons, these vainglorious dragons spend much of their time preening themselves.

* AttackItsWeakPoint: The primary weak point of the Deadly Nadder is the blind spot in front of its head. To correct for this, it will attack anything that even gently touches the nose or hears something it cannot see. As Gobber said, "Blind spot, yes. Deaf spot ... not so much." That said, trainers who build up strong rapports with their Nadders are allowed to touch them there.
* FragileSpeedster: They are capable of matching speed with a Night Fury if raised properly.
* TheFightingNarcissist: Deadly Nadders are extremely vain, evidenced by the generous amounts of time spent preening themselves.
* PirateParrot: Deadly Nadders resemble crested parrots rather than the traditional lizard, with rounded beak-like heads, bright scales resembling tropical plumage, and lack of forearms.
* SpikeShooter: Deadly Nadders can shoot spikes from their tail with frightful accuracy.

* IncendiaryExponent: Monstrous Nightmares attack after ''setting themselves on fire''.

They are the most feared dragons amongst the ranks of the Vikings. They belong to the Strike class of dragon, emphasizing the classification's hard hitting firepower and speed.

* AlwaysAccurateAttack: Their plasma blasts were described by Hiccup in the movie to "never miss", which was backed up in that almost all of their attacks (in the film) hit their mark.
* {{Badass}}: The fact they strike pure terror in a culture full of boisterous dragon-slaying vikings is any indication, they are this big time.
* TheDreaded: Vikings will gladly fight any of the other dragons, even ones that can swallow them whole, and have a long and impressive list of kills. If this one's screech is even heard? They run for cover screaming "NIGHT FURY! GET DOWN!".

* InformedAbility: In the tie-in ads and ''Defenders of Berk'', it is mentioned that Night Furies only have six shots, similar to Gronckles. Toothless regularly fires dozens of shots in a fight.
* LightningBruiser: They're called the unholy offspring of ''lightning'' and death.
* MakeMeWannaShout: Rare non-lethal variant (so far). "We Are a Family" reveals that they can use echolocation.
* MetalSlime: Toothless is the only known Night Fury encountered so far, indicating either LastOfItsKind or their extreme rarity.

* RedBaron: "The unholy offspring of lightning and death". In fact, the Night Fury is the ''only'' dragon in the movie to get a RedBaron like title.
* ShockAndAwe: Interesting that their [[BreathWeapon dragon fire]] seems to give off this more than PlayingWithFire. Also, if the battle with the Red Death in the movie is to go by, they have a concentrated blast so powerful they can topple the most [[AttackOfTheFiftyFootWhatever gargantuan of dragons]].
* SuperSenses: They can echolocate much as bats and some birds can, enabling them to maneuver in complete darkness and helping explain their accuracy when attacking at night.
* SuperSpeed: One of the fastest breeds of dragons. Only the Red Death is known to have matched or exceeded its speed, and Stormfly (a Nadder) only gets close because of Astrid's training and care.
* WaveMotionGun: Their plasma blasts can do ''serious'' damage, toppling things like the Red Death or sinking ships in one hit.
* YouAreAlreadyDead: The Book of Dragons mentions that if you encounter one, you are pretty much already screwed.

A large Mystery Class dragon, Boneknappers earn their moniker due to their macabre habit of assembling an armor of dragon bones to shield their bodies.

* ArchEnemy: To Gobber, [[CollectorOfTheStrange until it's revealed why]].
* CollectorOfTheStrange: It collects the bones of other dragons and wears them like armor.
* {{Determinator}}: The Boneknapper that was Gobber's rival in the short. Its lifelong feud with Gobber has lasted for what can only be described as decades between the two. Even after being attacked by a Hammerheaded Whale and Yak being sent by Thor, not only did the dragon survive, but it continued to hunt Gobber until it got what it wanted.
* ElementalArmor: The dragon bones it covers its body with qualify as this.
* HeelFaceTurn: Once a Boneknapper gets all its bones, they become incredible docile. Best described by Gobber:

* EverythingsBetterWithSpinning: Its main way of breathing fire.
* {{Expy}}: To the Timberjack, according to fans of the show.
* RingOfFire: They hunt by surrounding their prey with fire.
* SeldomSeenSpecies: A small number of them reside in the forests outside Berk but despite this, no-one had ever seen one prior to the series (And they have only appeared in two episodes so far). Their home island is revealed in "The Eel Effect": they are native to Eel Island as they can eat eels without getting horrifically sick (in fact, they use it as fuel for their BreathWeapon).
* SuperSpeed: It can get a speed boost by igniting itself like a Catherine Wheel firework.
* WreathedInFlames: As noted, this is the catalyst for its Super Speed. Not only does this make it fly faster, it also turns it into an airborne, spinning saw blade.

!!Thunderdrum
->Introduced: "How To Pick Your Dragon".
One of the two Tidal Class dragons known in the series, Thunderdrums are large, frog-like dragons who spend most of their time in the water.

* {{Badass}}: It's able to dodge Toothless's plasma blasts, and Toothless fires several times faster than any other fire-breathing dragon. It is also said to get its power from Thor itself, but that is more of an exaggeration. It is also able to plow right through solid rock without a scratch in a manner reminiscent of the Red Death.
* EarlyBirdCameo: Its first "appearance" is as a drawing in the Dragon Manual in the film. It isn't properly introduced until the show.
* FlyingSeafoodSpecial: Its introduction has it switching from swimming expertly underwater to a flying LightningBruiser. TheOtherWiki confirms that it is at least semi-amphibious.
* MakeMeWannaShout: It has a sonic scream, though its ability to scream someone's head clean off (as Hiccup narrated in the film) seems to have been an exaggeration, or not shown due to violence restrictions. It can, however, shatter reinforced wood and rock. This makes it one of the two dragons confirmed as not having fire-based {{breath weapon}}s.
* MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily: Its mouth is all fangs and its head is wide enough to hold Stoick the Vast comfortably.
* PrehensileTail: It uses its tail to grab Stoick and drag him under without leaving the water itself.

!!Fireworm Dragons
->Introduced: "Portrait of Hiccup as a Buff Young Man".
Small Stoker Class dragons, Fireworms are lizard-sized and lizard-like dragons that rely on their fiery skin to shield them from bigger enemies. They swarm in large numbers. Their Queen, however, is massive and can breathe fire like regular dragons.

* BreathWeapon: The little ones don't seem to have it, but the Queen does.
* IncendiaryExponent: Said to burn with the heat of the sun.
* LargeAndInCharge: The Fireworm Queen is larger than most regular dragons, about halfway between the Monstrous Nightmare and the Screaming Death.
* MamaBear: Do not mess with the Queen's nest if you want to live.
* VertebrateWithExtraLimbs: They have five pairs of legs.

!!Scauldron
->Introduced: "Dragon Flower".
A large Tidal Class dragon that lives almost entirely out to sea; it's unclear if it can even fly any more. Spends most of its time underwater and so is rarely a threat unless it takes a hankering to a netload of fish, or decides to get territorial around a ship.

* EarlyBirdCameo: Its first "appearance" is as a drawing in the Dragon Manual in the film. It isn't properly introduced until the show.
* KillItWithWater: As an aquatic dragon, its BreathWeapon is based on swallowing liters of water and heating them to boiling inside its belly, allowing it to spray targets with powerful geysers of searing water. As with the Thunderdrum above, the book embellishes this ability; the water may be hot, but it's certainly not as dangerous as the book would have one believe, given how easily the attack is blocked.
* PoisonousPerson: If it eats the right kind of flowers (which are deadly to other dragons), it becomes one of these. This also makes its venom a good cure for the poison in the flowers.

!!Whispering Death
->Introduced: "What Flies Beneath".
A rare and deadly member of the Boulder Class, the Whispering Death is a subterranean species of dragon that uses its wide mouth, spike-covered sinuous body, and six rows of rotating teeth to bore through the ground and come up from below when pursuing prey.

* {{Badass}}: The first one that appears is the ArchEnemy Of Toothless and [[NoSell No Sells]] Thornado's sonic scream
* BlankWhiteEyes: Though it isn't blind.
* DarkIsEvil: The scariest looking dragon seen so far has also been the nastiest, with the first one harrassing the entire village of Berk, including eating several livestock, out of a feud with Toothless and the second one [[spoiler: ending up as the mount of Alvin the Treacherous]].
** However, his is shown to be subverted later in the series. When it's shown that [[DarkIsNotEvil there not all bad after all]].
* EverythingsBetterWithSpinning: They have rotating jaws and their tails move in a circular motion while in flight.
* FlyingSeafoodSpecial: Thematically invoked; despite being a mostly subterranean creature, the Whispering Death is still quite capable of flight.
* LeanAndMean: They're the archetypal 'villain' dragons, with long, limbless, eel-like bodies.
* MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily: Six rows of rotating teeth. Between this, their oversized, ball-like heads, and their hostility, they're basically a draconic [[TheLangoliers Langolier]].
* SpikeShooter: Like the Deadly Nadder, only from virtually every point on its body.

* WeakenedByTheLight: They retreat from direct sunlight, though even mild cloud cover is sufficient for them to go outside.

!!Smothering Smokebreath

Small Mystery Class dragons that dwell in isolated regions. They produce thick clouds of smoke and use this as camouflage.

* TheCollector: They collect any metal items encountered, which they then meld together to build their nests. Justified, as they're rather small in size and use those nests to protect themselves from attacks by larger dragons.
* TheNapoleon: Third shortest breed of dragons seen so far, they're also fiercely territorial and very aggressive. Hiccup and the others didn't even ''try'' to train these things!
* SmokeShield: Invoked. They make a foggy-like smoke to act as protection, combined with metal scraps, to appear larger and scare others off.
* PintsizedPowerhouse: Surprisingly strong for little dragons too.
* ZergRush: They attack swiftly and in great numbers in order to overwhelm (or at least scare off) their victims.

!!Changewing
->Introduced: "Gem of a Different Color"
A member of the Mystery Class of dragons, Changewings are best known for their chameleonic scales, which make them extremely difficult to find.

* ConstantlyCurious: Stated to be their natural personality trait in Book of Dragons.
* FaceHeelTurn: [[spoiler:After the Outcasts tame and weaponise the local Changewing population. They're animals, so they're not inherently evil, but they're certainly being used for evil ends.]]
* HollywoodAcid: Not as strong as in many examples of the trope (it can damage stone but can't go through it and it barely scratches metal bars) but the speed at which it melts wood is still uncanny.
* HypnoticEyes: Demonstrated in [[AllThereInTheManual Book of Dragons]] that it possesses this ability, though it hasn't used it yet in the series.
* {{Invisibility}}: Can flawlessly blend in with their surroundings. However, in open skies they are unable to camouflage.
* MamaBear: Stealing their eggs is ''not'' a good idea. In fact, if multiple eggs are taken, ALL the mother dragons will work together to retrieve them, and they won't leave until they have them ALL back.
* SquishyWizard: For a dragon, anyways. The Gobber mentions in the Book of Dragons that their scales are softer as a side effect of their concealment, making them more vulnerable to attack once found.

!!Flightmare
->Introduced: "Fright of Passage"

* ArchEnemy: To Astrid and her family.
* BioluminescenceIsCool: Its diet of glowing algae causes its entire body to glow with bright blue light. This extends to other dragons that eat the algae, but the effect would seem to be permanent (or at the very least quite long lasting) for the Flightmare.
* BlindedByTheLight: The Flightmare uses this as one of its abilities. As with its general bioluminescence, other dragons can copy the effect.
* FearisTheAppropriateResponse: Lampshaded by everyone in Berk. Subverted for the reason why.
* LightIsNotGood: The Flightmare glows bright blue and attacks anything it feels is a threat to its food supply.
* TheParalyzer: It sprays a mist that causes its victims to freeze up for about a minute, allowing it to eat them with impunity. As most people don't survive this effect, the villagers attributed it to the victims choking in fear at the last moment, a fact which shamed Astrid's family when her "fearless" uncle fell prey to it.
* SuperSpit: Its BreathWeapon. See TheParalyzer above.

!!Skrill

An elusive member of the Strike Class of dragons, the Skrill are known for their Electrical abilities.

* AchillesHeel: It cannot use its electricity when submerged underwater.
* AxCrazy: According to the Book of Dragons, the Skrill is "Untrainable". Hiccup was willing to try, but he ultimately settled for just taking it out of the picture.
* {{Badass}}: It's easily as strong as Toothless, in addition to being immune to his attacks. This dragon is in the same class as Toothless (Strike Class), which emphasize on being ''very'' destructive.
* BeamSpam: Its BreathWeapon operates on this principle.
* EarlyBirdCameo: Its first "appearance" is as a drawing in the Dragon Manual in the film (Hiccup even mentions its name). It isn't properly introduced until the show.
* HarmlessFreezing: Can survive decades frozen solid in a block of ice. Justified due to its efficient internal body temperature.
* LightningGun: Its breath weapon. The Skrill breathes out concentrated beams of powerful electrical white fire.
* NoSell: Its electrical field can block Toothless' plasma blasts, though it needs to recharge to keep it up.
* PurpleIsPowerful: One of two dragons that utilizes a BreathWeapon other than fire (the other being a Night Fury) and it's colored violet.

* ShockAndAwe: Its main power.
* ShootTheBullet: Can nullify other dragons' attacks this way using its own BreathWeapon.

A breed of raptor-like, flightless dragons.

* BewareMyStingerTail: Anything they sting gets paralyzed for the better part of a day.

* EverythingsBetterWithDinosaurs: Lacking both flight and a BreathWeapon, they might as well be dinosaurs.
* FragileSpeedster: They aren't very big or tall and look frail, but they are very, very fast.
* InstantSedation: Their poison takes effect instantly.

* NothingIsScarier: There is absolutely ''no'' information on them in their research notes.
