* DeadpanSnarker: Comes out as he's being more open, a way to crack joke while maintaining his serious behaviour.

* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: Of TheAce, Nicholas is shown to be one of the best police officers in London and is said to have the highest arrest record in the police force. However, it's shown that his dedication to his job has left him friendless, his girlfriend left him because he could never switch off from the job, and he was resented by his co-workers for making them look bad.

* EntertaininglyWrong: He outlines an elaborate motive for Simon Skinner to take out Martin, Eve and George Merchant as well as his cousin Leslie to prevent a new highway that would have threatened his business. It's pretty well thought out and reasonable but it turns out Skinner and others committed the murders simply because all the people in question had annoying habits.

* FairCop: Look at his arse!

to:

* FairCop: Simon Pegg worked out extensively for the role and it shows. Look at his arse!

* GeniusBruiser: He's in excellent shape and a skilled Karate and Judo practitioner and fencer as well as a very skilled detective who knows every part of his job inside and out.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: From the beginning, Angel is a very cold, emotionless and stoical man who takes his work very seriously. When he meets Danny, he loosens up a bit and learns how to have fun.

* MarriedToTheJob: His main flaw. The crux of his CharacterDevelopment is learning how to "turn off" and have fun.

* MarriedToTheJob: His main flaw. He even missed his girlfriend's dad's funeral because of work. The crux of his CharacterDevelopment is learning how to "turn off" and have fun.

* NoSocialSkills: Downplayed. It's not that he has no social skills so much as he's just ''very'' serious and professional and so almost never relaxes or eases up. His time with Danny gradually has him grow out of this and become more sociable.

* RightForTheWrongReasons: He's dead on that Simon Skinner is involved in all the recent murders. He just gets the motive wrong and that Skinner wasn't the only one involved.

* WrongGenreSavvy: Nicholas is a pretty keen detective, and is able to suss out that there is a larger conspiracy going on in the town. However, Nicholas ''thinks'' he's in a typical crime drama, and as such builds his case around believable motivations such as financial gain or spousal disputes. [[spoiler: So when he realizes the Neighborhood Watch Alliance are essentially a group straight out of a ''horror film'' and are just a bunch of glorified serial killers, it completely throws him for a loop.]]

* TheDragon: While he's set up as the BigBad, he's really [[spoiler: Frank's underling.]]
** DragonInChief: While he's technically [[spoiler: Frank's underling]], he is the most active villain in the story and has free rein running the cult.

* LackOfEmpathy: Zigzagged. Almost never shows any guilt or remorse for the murders he commits in the name of the NWA, ''except'' Leslie Tiller, his own cousin and fellow NWA member, saying ruefully that her death was "a terrible shame," but he ultimately went along with it due to her insistence on leaving Sanford.

* ObviousVillainSecretVillain: Skinner draws attention to himself as a suspect so that the other members of the Neighbourhood Watch Alliance can evade suspicion, especially Inspector Frank Butterman.

* BigBrotherIsWatching: Serves as Sandford's surveillance.

* AffablyEvil: He's generally quite pleasant when [[spoiler: he isn't going around murdering people for the NWA.]]

* ManChild: And a PsychopathicManchild at that. He's willing to kill, but gets distracted by a cuddly monkey. When he's lined up for his mugshot, he's crying.
-->'''Danny:''' Dad says he's got the mind of a child.

* RedOniBlueOni: Angel is the [[ByTheBookCop by the book]] blue to Danny's more CowboyCop red.

* CowboyCop: He tries to be this, but he mostly comes off as inept. He ends up embracing this status at the end of the film though as Nicholas teaches him to be a more competent officer.

* AffablyEvil: A warm, jovial, fatherly man [[spoiler: who's the mastermind behind the whole conspiracy.]]

* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: As with the rest of the SPF, they're somehow well-versed in riot gear use and tactics.

* FatalFlaw: He's a little ''too'' dedicated to his job as a police officer, to the point where it gets in the way of his social life. With help from Danny, he begins to loosen up more and have more balance in his life.

* GoodCannotComprehendEvil: He's pretty good at understanding the motives of most crimes, he can understand regular evil. When confronting the masterminds of the plot he lays out a very rational if amoral plan to enrich themselves with a few targeted murders. What he can't even begin to comprehend is the pettiness that comes from killing dozens if not hundreds of people over the years, including children, just to win a meaningless contest each year. Sgt Angel goes from calm and collected to completely baffled and yelling at them in under a minute.

Added DiffLines:

* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Heavily implied in London where the entire police force is all too happy to see him off as part of the plan to see him KickedUpstairs. His gung-ho ByTheBookCop tendencies do little to ingratiate himself to the complacent, idle police officers in Sanford as well, particularly the Andys. Though when Nicholas proves he was right all along about the conspiracy they start warming up to him.

Added DiffLines:

* GrewASpine: Initially he's completely subservient to his father, acting more like a teenager than a grown adult. By the end of the movie after some CharacterDevelopment and discovering the truth of Sanford, he becomes much more willing to stand up for himself.
-->'''Frank''': Danny, step away from the sergeant. \\
'''Danny:''' No, Dad. \\
'''Frank''': Danny, you'll do as you're told. \\
'''Danny:''' I'm not taking orders from you anymore.
