** To the Shogun, the final result of the technology that created him. While both were created to serve as the Electro Archon's puppet, the results could not be more different. Scaramouche is a slim young man that could perhaps pass as a relative, while the Shogun puppet is an exact replica of their creator. While the Shogun is a puppet with little individual personality or emotion, Scaramouche was deemed unsuitable because of his developing individuality and emotion. The Shogun is an obedient servant that views herself as Ei's assistant, while Scaramouche harbors a bitter resentment towards the "mother" that abandoned him. * AchillesHeel: [[spoiler:The giant puppet he's hooked up to as Shouki no Kami grants him an appropriate amount of power ([[AttackOfTheFiftyFootWhatever and size]]), but it's still a machine, and can be overloaded if too much energy is sent through it at once. Nahida weaponizes her Akasha contraption for this purpose in the boss fight against him, absorbing energy from his attacks and sending it back at him to either stun him or deal a hefty amount of damage depending on the phase.]]
* AngstComa: After making a [[spoiler:futile effort begging Nahida to not have the Electro Gnosis taken away from him, Scaramouche loses consciousness and fell out of the Shouki no Kami. His comatose body is currently being kept under the care of Nahida]].
* AnythingButThat: [[spoiler:Scaramouche begs for Nahida not to take the Electro Gnosis after he is defeated. When she does, he falls into the above AngstComa.]]
* ArchEnemy: Of the first three Harbingers the Traveler encounters, they develop a beef with Scaramouche in particular, thanks to his {{Sadist}} attitude and the role he plays in [[spoiler:Teppei's death]] during the Inazuma storyline, with the fight with him in Sumeru's quest having far more build-up than Tartaglia's or Signora's before him.
* ArtificialHuman: [[spoiler:Towards the end of the Inazuma Archon Quest, Miko reveals that Scaramouche was a prototype divine puppet that Ei made, then left on his own after deeming him inadequate to hold the Electro Gnosis. Later, he was discovered by the Fatui, who he found so amusing he decided to join them and cause even greater chaos.]]
* BetaTestBaddie: Looking at ''Husk of Opulent Dreams'' lore FlavorText, [[spoiler:he's supposedly made to hold Ei's Gnosis, but Ei deemed him unfit. He longed for a heart, and found it, only to realize it's devoid of blessing and instead filled with cruelty. He held onto that heart regardless, because he would rather feel hatred and disdain than nothing at all.]]
* BitchInSheepsClothing: Pretends to be friendly to the Traveler, Paimon, Fischl, and Oz upon meeting them to obscure his membership with the Fatui and his status as one of their Harbingers. Thankfully when trying to interact with them a second time, Mona [[{{Seers}} reads]] that he is dangerous and teleports the gang out of there. He reveals his true colors later in the scene when he is alone with his underlings.
* BreakingOldTrends: Downplayed; Scaramouche (as the Wanderer) is the first playable character since the release of Rosaria whose Wish artwork pose does not completely match his Character Introduction artwork pose; in his Wish artwork, his hat is missing and his arms and hand gestures are readjusted, but his facial expression and overall pose remains similar to his introduction artwork.
* CallingParentsByTheirName: During his boss battle, if the player has [[spoiler:the Raiden Shogun in the field, and she falls in battle, he will address her as Beelzebul]].
* TheChessmaster:
** [[spoiler:He orchestrated the Inazuman Civil War, having helped the Fatui manipulate the Tenryou and Kanjou Commissions into tricking the Raiden Shogun into enacting repressive laws and at the same time supplying the Sangonomiya Resistance with Delusions to further escalate the conflict until Miko simply handed him the Electro Gnosis in exchange for the Traveler's life. It should be noted that he did all that without lifting a single finger, having only manipulated things in his favor until they had no choice but to go along with him. Even Signora, who is noted to be quite shrewd herself, had to ambush Venti to get his Gnosis.]]
** "Hues of the Violet Garden" event reveals that [[spoiler: it wasn't even the first time he majorly altered the course of Inazuman history. A couple of centuries prior, he destroyed three of the five prominent weaponsmithing schools and drove the fourth one into near obscurity, while making it look like the decline was completely natural]].
* ClimaxBoss: The Traveler's confrontation with him marks the halfway point of the game's story, and the conversation they have with Nahida after his defeat marks a major turning point in what the Traveler thought they knew about [[spoiler:their sibling]].
* ControlFreak: Snaps and angrily berates his subordinate for suggesting another action instead of following his orders, displaying his assertive authority over others.
* CultureEqualsCostume: The protagonists find Scaramouche's attire to be foreign compared to the majority (they were in Liyue at the time), and so, he explains that he came from Inazuma. [[spoiler:He is indeed from Inazuma, being a prototype of the automaton that will eventually be known as the "Raiden Shogun" who Ei/Beelzebul let go despite being faulty. The Fatui eventually approached him, and he became the Harbinger known as Scaramouche.]]
* CurbStompBattle: [[spoiler:After hyping himself up as Teyvat's newest god, it doesn't take much legwork on Nahida's end to show him how powerful an Archon ''really'' is. With just an advanced Akasha Terminal of her own design, she's able to instantly trap him in a LotusEaterMachine not unlike the one the Sages created earlier in the questline, then simulates his battle with the Traveler through precisely 168 loops so the Traveler could then use the combat data to take him out. The advanced Akasha itself continuously fires Dendro bolts that whittle down Scaramouche's health overtime, with the blasts it fires once you collect enough energy taking out a solid quarter of his health. When you keep in mind that this is a Paimon-sized robot Nahida built in about two days versus a HumongousMecha that the Sages spent the better part of a year working on, it quickly becomes apparent how utterly outmatched the Balladeer was.]]
* DaddyHadAGoodReasonForAbandoningYou: GenderInvertedTrope. [[spoiler:Ei deemed the puppet who would become Kunikuzushi/Scaramouche inadequate to hold the Electro Gnosis when she saw him crying in his sleep, but neither did she have the heart to either destroy or assert control over him, so she instead put him to sleep in Shakkei Pavillion so he could decide his direction in life once he wakes up, even leaving him a feather containing her symbol, presumably meant to help him. However, regardless of her intentions, he saw [[ParentaAbandonment Ei's action as abandonment]], her symbol only bringing him more trouble than it is worth, thus giving him the mother (pun intended) of all mommy issues.]]
* DeadpanSnarker: He already had a few shades of this pre HazyFeelTurn, but his playable appearance has him casually adopt this demeanor in his voice-overs.
-->''(About The Captain) "The ever-righteous Captain," "the brave and fearless Captain," "the nigh-invincible Captain"... '''Even my mechanical ears demand maintenance after listening to so many compliments from the members of the Fatui.'''"''
* DeathFromAbove: Due to the sheer size of his boss form (the Traveler doesn't even reach up to his ankles, and he's also [[PowerFloats floating]]), he has a significant advantage in height, with many of his attacks involving [[MacrossMissileMassacre projectile showers]], [[BoltOfDivineRetribution forming a javelin of Electro and slamming into the ground]], and infusing his hands and [[GiantFootofStomping feet]] with [[ShockAndAwe Electro]] to GroundPunch and ShockwaveStomp. Furthermore, he also has a OneHitKill move where he charges up an energy ball from the ceiling of the boss arena and throws it down at the player when it finishes forming.
* DespairEventHorizon: In the cutscene explaining his backstory, [[spoiler:Scaramouche started to hold more nihilistic views upon arriving home to find that the little boy he was taking care of had died, which lead him to join the Fatui afterwards.]]
* DeusEstMachina: His boss form is a [[MultiArmedAndDangerous multi-armed]], [[HumongousMecha gigantic armored puppet]] that he pilots from inside the head of the puppet as part of his [[spoiler: successful]] ploy to become a god.
* DevelopersForesight: The dialogue of the Traveler's encounter with him in the Delusion Factory changes depending on whether the player took part in the "Unreconciled Stars" event. If they had, Scaramouche displays familiarity towards the Traveler and cuts to the chase. Otherwise, he makes a proper introduction with the splash text and everything to prevent players who joined after 1.1 or skipped "Unreconciled Stars" from being confused.
* TheDreaded: When he was approaching the Traveler, Fischl, and Mona in Mondstadt, the first thing Mona did was [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere grab the other two and teleport the hell out of there]]. The former two had met him before but had no idea who he was; he mutters to himself afterwards that it would have been a perfect opportunity to kill the Traveler if not for Mona's quick thinking. This makes sense with the reveal that he was really a Fatui Harbinger, [[spoiler: and even more so as an ArtificialHuman created by the Electro Archon,]] with Mona sensing his true nature.
* DreamworksFace: It's hard to see, but in his official art his right eyebrow is a bit raised, thus qualifying as this.
* DrivenToSuicide: In the Wanderer's [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AR2n2TsJuNE Character Teaser]], after the death of the child he was taking care of during his pre-Fatui life, he sat down in the burning house they were living in, initially planning to burn himself along with it until something came along to stop him.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: His second appearance has him approach the Traveler's group casually, like before, only this time Mona [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere instantly teleports them all away]]. He then wryly admits that he was about to attack them and when one of his men speaks out of turn, Scaramouche fiercely berates him, setting up that though he seems harmless, he is both dangerous and temperamental.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: While talking one-on-one with the Traveler during Sumeru Act V, he doesn't get why the Traveler is willing to put in so much effort to protect the world, telling them to let go of their "misguided guardian complex." A little while later, he gets annoyed when Nahida steps in between him and the Traveler, angrily asking her if she's "having fun proving a false sense of heroism" to herself.
* EvilCounterpart:
** To Baal, [[spoiler: also known as the first Electro Archon, Raiden Makoto. Both have similar beliefs that all things are fragile and impermanent that contrasts Ei's original understanding of eternity that things can be preserved. Scaramouche most notably points out the flaws of Ei's ideology in Act III of the Inazuma questline, and the cutscene depicting his backstory in the Sumeru Chapter show that his pre-Fatui clothing even shared the same white and light purple colour palette as Makoto's kimono. But while Makoto sees the [[MonoNoAware beauty in transience]], Scaramouche has a more nihilistic approach and mocks the worthlessness of the human lives.]]
** Act V of the Sumeru Questline posits him as one to Nahida, [[spoiler: or more accurately, Lesser Lord Kusanali. Both were created by Archons for the purpose of serving as their replacements, but were prevented from fulfilling said purpose because of factors outside of their control, with Ei deeming the then Kunikuzushi to be unfit to carry her Gnosis due to seeing him cry in his sleep and so sealed his powers in an attempt to give him a normal life, while the Sages immediately locked up Nahida upon discovering her due to feeling her to be an InadequateInheritor to Rukkhadevata, [[DramaticIrony not realizing this went against her wishes.]] However, whereas Scaramouche's experiences turned him into a bitter, hateful individual with an equal measure of loathing towards both gods and humans, [[SmugSnake holding himself as superior]] and frequently doing horrible things ForTheEvulz, Nahida managed to remain an AllLovingHero who put her people and their well-being first, and is very much a HumbleHero who doubts her ability to live up to Rukkhadevata.]]
** To Kazuha, which the "Hues in the Violet Garden event reveal that [[spoiler:Scaramouche personally orchestrated the series of events that led to his clan's downfall, eventually leading Kazuha to his current lifestyle]]. As playable characters, both are male Inazuman Anemo vision holders of medium height that descended from noble families who wear both black and white in their clothes that are known to wander about, were personally hurt by the Raiden Shogun's actions and [[spoiler:have temporarily wielded Electro powers at the climax of their respective Chapters]]. However, Kazuha's red outfit contrasts with the Wanderer's blue, and Kazuha is wise enough to recognise the dangers of becoming obsessed the past and does not dwell on his personal loss, while the Wanderer [[spoiler:became Scaramouche because he could not make peace with the "three betrayals" he experienced, and continued his vain attempt to chase after godhood.]]
* {{Expy}}: His boss fight where he pilots a gigantic, armored puppet bears a resemblance to the [[Characters/HonkaiImpact3rdAntiEntropy Arhat]] from ''Honkai Impact 3rd''; both are sleek, gigantic pilot-assisted robots roughly the height of a 5-story building, both bear a similar crown on their foreheads, and both are fast and nimble that betray its colossal size. The difference between the two was that the Arhat lacks two additional arms, and its only appearance is in the single animated short and the webcomic (where it plays a prominent role).
* EyelidPullTaunt: As a playable character, he has this as one of his idle animations.
* FaceOfAnAngelMindOfADemon: Scaramouche appears as a cute young man, but has a cruel personality behind his cute face.
* FauxAffablyEvil: When meeting the Traveler in Mondstadt, Scaramouche acts polite and cordial, but when Mona teleports the group away, he reveals his true colors as he admits he missed a perfect chance to kill the Traveler and berates one of his men for speaking out of turn. [[spoiler:When the Traveler meets Scaramouche in Inazuma, he doesn't even bother putting on a polite front.]]
* {{Foil}}: To [[Characters/GenshinImpactTartaglia Childe]], the other playable male Harbinger. They both appear as boss battles that the Traveler has to complete to progress on their journey, and they are associated with at least one archon (Zhongli for Childe, Raiden and Nahida for Scaramouche). However:
** Childe, despite being a BloodKnight who is loyal to the Tsaritsa, is [[AffablyEvil genuinely friendly]] towards the Traveler, speaking highly of them on several occasions. Scaramouche, on the other hand, mocks them at every opportunity.
** Childe has the decency to at least feel bad about innocents getting hurt in his plan to lure out Morax, while Scaramouche displays a LackOfEmpathy for the Sangonomiya Soldiers who died from using the Delusions and humanity in general.
** Childe is a BenevolentBoss to his subordinates, whereas Scaramouche is [[MeanBoss the opposite]].
** Childe has an UndyingLoyalty to the Tsaritsa, while Scaramouche is a WildCard with no real allegiance to anyone other than himself (even having joined the Fatui [[ItAmusedMe out of amusement]]).
** Childe is on good terms with his family back in Snezhnaya (especially his siblings), while Scaramouche is angry at Raiden for abandoning him.
** Childe is still in the Fatui as of this typing, while Scaramouche has all but deserted the organization.
* ForegoneConclusion: His announcement as an upcoming playable character (under the name "Wanderer") before the release of Chapter III Act V [[spoiler:(where he debuts as the final boss and is waving huge death flags up to that point)]] guarantees his survival towards the end of the Sumeru arc.
* {{Foreshadowing}}:
** Even though Scaramouche's very first appearance in the "Unreconciled Stars" event barely reveals any major information about him, [[FreezeFrameBonus a closer inspection of his back]] during his conversation with the protagonists shows [[https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/4a9a1498-ff4f-4319-948e-30b4153464e9 the Fatui's insignia in one of his belongings]].
** His Inazuman heritage and similarities to the Raiden Shogun's appearance hints at a connection. [[spoiler:Proven right as the end of the Inazuma storyline reveals he was a prototype of the Raiden Shogun puppet that Ei had let go out of sentiment, which is further reinforced by the description of the Surpassing Cup artifact lining up with this.]]
* ForTheEvulz: His motivation for joining the Fatui basically boils down to the fact that he finds the shady organization of masked people amusing, and he loves to taunt and toy with his opponents at every chance he gets.
-->'''Artifact Lore:''' Since these mask-wearing people are so fun to be around... I think I'll become one of them.
* FreudianExcuse: [[spoiler:He started off as a puppet created by Ei to hold her Gnosis, but she deemed him unfit for the task. Unwilling to dispose of him nor ascertain control over his life, she sealed his powers and left him to slumber, never expecting him to wake up. Scaramouche saw this as [[ParentalAbandonment abandonment]], and the lack of guidance left him emotionally unequipped to handle the tragedies that unfolded in his life, which caused him to deem humans worthless and the gods loathsome.]]
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: From helping a Fatui soldier named Viktor in Mondstadt with a commission, he mentions that Scaramouche is difficult to collaborate with and disliked by people, including the other Harbingers.
* GameplayAndStorySegregation:
** The player can pull Scaramouche (as the Wanderer) from the gacha and play as him in the open world exploration even before completing chapter 5 of the Sumeru arc; before that point, he is still your enemy as a Fatui Harbinger who has not awakened his Anemo vision nor taken up the identity and attire as the Wanderer yet. You can also bring the playable Scaramouche into the Scaramouche Boss Fight, making there be two Scaramouches with no explanation.
** Zigzagged when it comes to Fatui enemies in the overworld; they will attack him on sight just like any other party member. While it makes sense post-Sumeru arc, where he no longer have ties to the Fatui as the Wanderer, this makes less sense prior to completing the Inazuma story arc, where he is still active as a Harbinger.
* GodhoodSeeker: [[spoiler:His ultimate goal in Sumeru seems to be to somehow replace Lesser Lord Kusanali as their Archon. Even before that, he yearned for the Electro Gnosis that was meant to be his "heart".]]
* GodsNeedPrayerBadly: As part of his plot to [[spoiler:make Scaramouche the new God of Wisdom, Dottore runs an experiment on Sumeru's citizens in which he makes them worship the Traveler through their Akasha terminals. Dottore comments on how the experiment is a success, meaning he will move on to making the people worship Scaramouche enough to elevate him to godhood.]]
%%* GoodCostumeSwitch: While it is questionable how "good" he has become after his HazyFeelTurn, As a playable unit, he switches his black-and-purple costume for a white and blue one; unlike previous bosses-turned-playable (Childe and Raiden), Scaramouche is the first who changes his attire in the transition from an enemy [=NPC=] to a playable character.
* GoodIsNotNice: He may become a playable character, but that does not mean he TookALevelInKindness. [[ReformedButNotTamed Rather]], he remains the same arrogant {{Jerkass}} he was as the Balladeer.
[[/folder]]
[[folder:H-W]]
* HasTwoMommies: In a way. While Raiden was the one who created him, Nahida is the one taking care of him after the Archon Quest.
* HatedByAll: While Scaramouche is disliked even by other Fatui, including the other Harbingers, and shows himself to be a sociopathic jerk both in the "Unreconciled Stars" event and in Inazuma chapter of Archon Quest, he's still nowhere as bad as certain colleagues of his, like [[MadScientist Dottore]]. Additionally, bits and pieces of lore scattered around Inazuma provide insight on his past and motivations, painting him in a more sympathetic light, and later get shown in a cutscene in Chapter III Act III.
* HazyFeelTurn: [[spoiler:Despite casting aside his status as a Harbinger and joining the roster as a playable party member, it's clear from his voicelines and animations that Scaramouche is still as much of an unpleasant, arrogant {{Sadist}} as the Wanderer as he was as the Balladeer.]]
* HelloInsertNameHere: [[spoiler:At the end of his Archon Quest, the Traveler is given the chance to give him a new name. [[DevelopersForesight He will however not accept "Scaramouche", "Balladeer" or "Kunikuzushi"]]]].
* HiddenDepths:
** While his appearances in "Unreconciled Stars" and Inazuma Archon quest have shown him as a jerk who puts up a polite front, the description of Skeletal Hat from Husk Of Opulent Dreams artifact set mentions him being nice to kids and elderly, with the narration pointing out that the smiles he gave were earnest.
** From the same artifact set, Song of Life implies that [[spoiler:his current heart]] is the reason for his sociopathy, while originally he admired goodness, strength and gentleness in people's hearts, and [[spoiler:desired such a heart for himself, only to get a heart filled with vile things instead.]]
** One of the notes scattered around Tatarasuna reveals that Scaramouche knows sword dancing, and performed a dance with one of the Tatarasuna workers in the past.
* HumongousMecha: His boss form is a gigantic, armored puppet that can utilize multiple elements that he pilots from inside the head of the puppet. [[spoiler:Nahida and the Traveler caught a glimpse of this after Katheryne was stabbed by a Corps of Thirty soldier.]]
* ImportantHairAccessory: Only started wearing large hats after experiencing his third "betrayal", with his two most recent hats being a part of his Fatui attire and his unaffiliated "Wanderer" garb.
* IJustWantToBeLoved: Heavily implied by his MotiveRant. He considered Ei [[ParentalAbandonment leaving him in a domain a grave betrayal]], he was deeply upset by the blacksmiths who took him in fearing his puppet nature, and he lost his sanity completely after a child he befriended died, after which he renounced both humanity and the gods.
* ItAmusedMe: His reason for joining the antagonistic Fatui is because they seemed fun to him.
* {{Jerkass}}: Scaramouche is a jerk who looks down on pretty much everyone. He mocks the Sangonomiya soldiers who used Delusions, treated his subordinates like crap while he was in the Fatui, and is an all-around cynical, unpleasant individual. He keeps the attitude [[ReformedButNotTamed even after becoming a playable character]].
* JustFollowingOrders: [[spoiler:When confronted in the Delusion Factory by the Traveler for his misdeeds, he claims to be doing this.]]
* KubrickStare: Is fond of giving them whenever he appears in the main story, first in the [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bd168d7a_2c99_464a_9577_4f82d814f806.jpeg Inazuman Archon Quest]], then in [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2022_09_29_at_102113_pm.png Act III of the Sumeru Archon Quest]].
* LackOfEmpathy: [[spoiler:When the Traveler confronts Scaramouche in the Delusion factory in Inazuma, Scaramouche not only displays zero remorse for distributing the Delusions, but even mocks the Resistance for willingly using a power they know will kill them. He even goes so far as to mock Teppei's death, though this was partially to rile the Traveler up enough that the Tatarigami would feed on their anger and weaken them enough for him to make another attempt on their life. {{Justified}} as he purposefully closed his own heart in order for him to not feel positive emotions such as empathy.]]
* LikeFatherLikeSon: [[spoiler:Scaramouche and his creator/mother Ei both have great difficulty coping with grief and loss, resulting in a lot of problems for people around them, though the way they dealt with these feelings differ. Ei grew fearful and sought to protect herself by going into seclusion, creating a BodyDouble that had been manipulated into enacting repressive laws by corrupt elements within the Shogunate in collusion with the Fatui, until the Traveler and Miko managed to reach out to her and urge her to confront both her grief and the problems she unwittingly created. By contrast, Scaramouche actively lashed out at the world he felt hurt him, nearly destroying the Raiden Gokaden and, as a Harbinger, helped the Fatui escalate centuries-old tensions between the Shogunate and Watatsumi into civil war with the aforementioned laws. In addition, both attempt to ascend/depart from the mortal plane, referencing the concepts of samsara and nirvana in a way. Ei calls the mortal world an illusion and a dream and meditates in the Plane of Euthymia, while Scaramouche attempts to become a god, with one of his voicelines being "reality is pain".]]
%%* LightIsGood: As a playable unit, he wears a white-and-blue outfit, similar to what he wore before he joined the Fatui.
* MayflyDecemberFriendship: [[spoiler:His "third betrayal" is that of a child he befriended, who died, "breaking his promise". This made Scaramouche realise the fragility and mortality of humans, and how he will always outlive them. This prompted him to shut his heart and never form friendships with humans again, claiming that humans "can't be trusted".]]
* MeaningfulName: His name prior to joining the Fatui, Kunikuzushi, means "destroyer of the country," which is also the name of the scheming villain archetype in KabukiTheatre. [[spoiler:Fitting since he is responsible for Inazuma's civil war and unrest along with the partial destruction of the Raiden Gokaden. {{Justified}} because he chose it for himself.]]
* MechanicallyUnusualFighter: As a playable character, Scaramouche can use his Elemental Skill to hover in the air, which changes his Normal and Charged attacks, increasing their damage and [=AoE=], and makes Charged attacks consume no stamina. The hovering state also has its own stamina meter in the form of Kuugoryoku Points, which get constantly consumed for maintaining the hovering state, with additional points being consumed for performing various actions, like accelerating mid-air or increasing hovering height. Additionally, contacting Hydro, Pyro, Cryo, or Electro while hovering provides Scaramouche with various buffs for the duration of the skill, instead of Swirl-related effects usually associated with Anemo users.
* MythologyGag: One of his attacks as a boss is to spawn numerous dimensional portals behind him that shoot [[ShockAndAwe Electro]] projectiles onto the player, and it looks extremely similar to an attack used by the Herrscher of Void from Genshin's sister game ''VideoGame/HonkaiImpact3rd''.
* TheNapoleon: Is short (uses the Medium Male model), especially when compared to his Fatui minions, and will fiercely berate them for simply giving him a suggestion.
* NeverBeHurtAgain: It's implied that his goal of ridding himself of emotions is a reaction to the emotional pain he's suffered.
* NiceHat: He wears a large, ornate hat, both as the Balladeer and as the Wanderer. As the Wanderer, his Elemental Skill transforms his hat into magical boosters that allow him to fly, and his voiceline when it's raining has the Traveler ask if they can use his hat as an umbrella.
* NoNonsenseNemesis: Unlike either Signora or Tartaglia, he doesn’t mess around when he wants someone dead.
** In the "Unreconciled Stars" event, the first time he encountered the Traveler, he had to stand down or else he would incur the wrath of the Millelith, and he hoped to catch them off guard in their second encounter, and would have succeeded had Mona not sensed him as a threat. [[spoiler:The only reason why he doesn’t bother trying to kill them in their third encounter was because he discovered an AwfulTruth when he examined the meteor core and wondered why Pierro didn't tell him.]]
** In Inazuma, [[spoiler:when the Traveler has him cornered in the Delusion Factory, rather then fight them himself, he riles up their emotions so that the Tatarigami will weaken them, then tries to strike them down. He only backs down because Yae Miko gives him the Electro Gnosis in exchange for their life.]]
* OlderThanTheyLook: Looks younger than Childe, the youngest of the Eleven Fatui Harbingers. [[spoiler:However, it's mentioned by Yae Miko that he's around 500 years old.]]
* PetTheDog: ZigZagged. [[spoiler:When the Traveler informs him of Dottore attempting to kidnap Haypasia, who he admits to having a fondness for as his "first follower", he mocks their transparent attempt at trying to pit the two against each other, but nonetheless summons a lightning storm to obliterate the Fatui agents mounting an attack and forcing the survivors to retreat. At the same time, that same storm ''did'' hit Tighnari, albeit non-lethally.]]
* PowerFloats: His Elemental Skill lets him outright ''fly'', yes you read that right, even if only temporarily.
* PrettyBoy: The Surpassing Cup's lore states that he was "born with a face fairer than any other". He is also described as "the beautiful [[spoiler: puppet]]" in the Husk of Opulent Dreams pieces.
* PsychoPrototype: Supposedly because he lacks a "heart". The Husk of Opulent Dreams artifact lore notes that [[spoiler:he longed for and got one, but it turned out to be filled with "selfishness, hypocrisy, cunning, and curses", turning him sociopathic. He kept this heart regardless, because getting rid of it would render him incapable of feeling anything at all. In his flashback in Chapter III Act III, however, it's stated that he had a close relationship with a blacksmith before the latter abandoned him, and later a child who died soon after, and only ''afterwards'' did he [[ThenLetMeBeEvil deliberately]] give himself this heart.]]
* PuzzleBoss: Downplayed. [[spoiler: His boss fight still involves quite a bit of brute force, but unlike past bosses, Scaramouche's HumongousMecha has a titanic amount of health, and damaging him is heavily reliant on the mobile Akasha terminal built by Nahida; using it in a bare minimum will prolong the fight significantly, so full use of it is encouraged. The design choice of a weapon/tool with gimmicks to counterbalance a boss with massive amounts of health brings to mind certain bosses from Creator/FromSoftware titles, most notably [[VideoGame/{{Elden Ring}} Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy]] as a massive, dual phase boss heavily damaged and stunned by a particular item.]]
* RazorWind: As a playable character, his normal attacks take on the form of wind blades.
* Really700YearsOld: [[spoiler:Being the prototype to the "Raiden Shogun" puppet, he must be around 500 years old (likely younger than Nahida and Yae Miko), first made when Ei was getting ready to isolate herself in the Plane of Euthymia.]]
* TheReveal: [[spoiler:At the end of the Inazuma storyline Yae reveals that he is the prototype puppet made by Ei to hold her Electro Gnosis and one of the original puppets that Ei created as a proof of concept for the Raiden Shogun puppet she was making. Ei intended to discard him, but instead chose to seal his powers and let him go out of sentiment after he "awoke" to a mind of his own. Years later, he would eventually be found by the Fatui and be amused by them, leading to him joining the group and becoming Scaramouche]].
* RuleOfThree: He describes his StartOfDarkness as being the result of suffering "three betrayals".
** The first betrayal was [[spoiler: Ei, who was for all intents and purposes his mother, deeming him unfit to carry the Electro Gnosis upon seeing him cry in his sleep and, in a misguided attempt at mercy, sealed his powers and placed him somewhere in Inazuma so he can live a normal life without the pressures of godhood weighing on him.]]
** The second betrayal was [[spoiler: a blacksmith of the Niwa Clan who befriended him and proceeded him to teach him how to smith, only to grow fearful of him upon learning of his nature as a puppet.]]
** The third and final betrayal was [[spoiler: at the hands of a sickly child he befriended who promised to be his friend forever, only to succumb to his illness and die. This was the final straw for Kunikuzushi, who decided to close off his heart from others and join the Fatui, becoming Scaramouche.]]
* SequelHook: During the “Unreconciled Stars” event, Scaramouche at one point mentions Jester (aka Pierro), the First Harbinger, [[spoiler:and something about the stars in the sky being fake before taunting the heroes]] and vanishing. The game will address this later.
* ShockAndAwe: [[spoiler:During Chapter III Act V, he uses the Electro Gnosis to summon a lightning storm to strike down the Fatui operatives who came to kidnap Haypasia (and forcing the rest to flee), and also non-fatally strikes Tighnari.]]
* ShockwaveStomp: His Burst has him conjure an orb of concentrated Anemo below his foot and slam it towards the ground, unleashing a column of powerful Anemo energy engulfing his foes.
* SignatureHeadgear: Most of his appearances in-game has him wearing a stylised, umbrella-shaped kasa hat with a translucent black veil decorated with Inazuman aesthetics at the back and two round, bell-like accessories attached to the sides of the kasa by red threads. As Wanderer, he sports a similar one that's blue instead, and also forgoes the veil and replaces the original accessories with new ones that resemble vajras attached by blue stripes of cloth on the sides of the hat. It temporarily vanishes while his Elemental Skill is active.
* SignificantWardrobeShift: [[spoiler: In the distant past, he wore white and light purple clothing prior to his "third betrayal" sending him down a darker path.]] As a Harbinger, he wears darker shades of black, red, and purple in an EvilCostumeSwitch. As a playable character, his clothing changes to add softer shades of white and blue, suited to his Anemo Vision and shifting from a deadly foe to a party member for the Traveler.
* TheSociopath: Scaramouche displays all the traits of a classic sociopath. He's manipulative, arrogant, easily angered, and displays a total lack of remorse for his actions. Part of this stems from how he views himself as "a human who surpasses all others", judging from the Surpassing Cup's description[[labelnote:What the description says]] Even the gods daren't meddle in my fate. Neither mortal nor god, nor fate itself, is qualified to be my judge. I am free to choose how I wish to spend the remainder of my days.[[/labelnote]]. However, this gets PlayedWith in that [[spoiler:he only became this because he ended up closing his heart.]]
* StockShonenRival: Checks off many of the boxes. Starts off as a villain? Becomes one of the Traveler's [[ArchEnemy most personal enemies]]? Arrogant {{Jerkass}}? Opposing color scheme to the Traveler's? [[spoiler:Uses numerous elements just like the Traveler does in his boss fight?]] Check to all of the above. For bonus points his title as a playable unit is "Wanderer" and his Vision is Anemo, the same element the Traveler started out with, furthering the parallels between the two.
* ThatManIsDead:
** [[spoiler:After ascending to godhood, Scaramouche abandons all of his former titles and completely cuts all ties he had to the Fatui.]]
** Scaramouche drops another one of these in the version 3.3 trailer (depicting Sumeru's Interlude Quest), presumably serving as a transition towards taking up his new identity as the playable Wanderer.
-->''From this day forth, [[spoiler:"Balladeer" and "Kabukimono" will cease to exist]].''
* TheUnfought: A unique case. Scaramouche is fought [[spoiler:but not as the Balladeer with his own powers, but as the God of Arcane Wisdom and a magitek armor.]]
* UnfulfilledPurposeMisery: During their "friendly" conversation, Scaramouche readily admits to the Traveler that he has no problems with [[spoiler:his identity being erased when he becomes the new God of Wisdom. Instead, he argues that this will finally fulfill his intended purpose. His desperation when his ascension is stopped and the Electro Gnosis is retrieved show that this isn't simply the arrogant ravings of a would-be God, but a glimpse of his deeper insecurity over "failing" to become a vessel for his creator]].
* TokenEvilTeammate: Even moreso than Tartaglia, as while he (Scaramouche) deserted the Fatui, he is still the same arrogant, cynical douchebag that he was as an enemy of the Traveler.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: For a given measure of "kid", [[spoiler:since he is an artificial human, but Ei deemed him unfit to carry her Gnosis due to being too "fragile", having seen him shed tears in his sleep. His flashback in Chapter III Act III adds that he was later found by an Inazuman blacksmith who treated him like a family, and developed a friendship with a child much like himself. However, after these two turned on him, he came to believe that humans aren't trustworthy and loath the gods.]]
* VillainousBreakdown: [[spoiler:When Nahida is removing the Electro Gnosis from his HumongousMecha, Scaramouche completely drops his [[SmugSnake smug demeanour]] and he desperately [[AintTooProudToBeg begs]] her not to remove it, even trying to force his way out of the puppet and straining the plug cords connected to him in his attempt to stop her. The moment it's removed and the cords connecting him snap, he enters an AngstComa and falls out of the puppet to his apparent death.]]
-->[[spoiler:''"No! Wait! Please, anything but the Gnosis! That's mine! Don't even try...! I'll never...'' '''''I'LL NEVER GO BACK!!!"''''']]
* VillainousRescue: [[spoiler:While the Traveler and their allies are trying to prevent the Fatui from kidnapping Haypasia, the Traveler contacts Scaramouche through Haypasia and tells him about the situation. Scaramouche, annoyed that the Fatui are trying to harm his first follower as a god, unleashes a thunderstorm that wipes most of the Fatui out (while simultaneously injuring Tighnari)]].
* WildCard: The "Labyrinth Warriors" event [[spoiler:has Childe mention that after he obtained the Electro Gnosis, Scaramouche hasn't reported back to the Fatui or Tsaritsa, seemingly having gone rogue. The reason Childe is in Inazuma during the event's story is because he was sent to investigate his whereabouts.]]
* YouCantThwartStageOne: Scaramouche ends up getting nearly everything he wants. During Inazuma Archon Quest, [[spoiler: he successfully retrieves the Electro Gnosis,]] and during Sumeru's Archon Quest, [[spoiler: he works with Il Dottore to become a god, using the Electro Gnosis and the power of the Divine Knowledge Capsules to become Sumeru's God of Wisdom. While he never gets to use the Divine Knowledge Capsules, the heroes aren't quick enough to stop him — by the time their plans reach their conclusion, [[YouAreTooLate his ascension is already complete.]] If it weren't for Nahida's assistance during the Traveler's battle against him, he would be completely unstoppable.]]
