More than a decade ago, Lord Balon Greyjoy of the Iron Islands raised a rebellion and tried to win independence for his region. Robert, Eddard and Jon Arryn put an end to it, and Ned took Theon (Greyjoy's only remaining son, the two elders having been killed during the war) as a "ward" to [[IHaveYourWife guarantee Balon's good behavior]]. Theon has lived at Winterfell since he was 8 years old.
