Edited for factual accuracy.
* BadassGrandpa: One of the strongest characters in the series. To cite, he destroyed a ''tank'' with a '''sword'''. Seriously, [[spoiler: he takes on Fu, 2nd Greed and Buccaneer at the same time with ''paper-cutters'' and '''wins''' until they must stab through Fu to even land a hit.]]

One trope one line rule. Worf Effect was misuse for the following reasons: 1.) it was not done to establish Oliver's power level; she was already known to be mighty. 2.) it was played for laughs. 3.) confusion for Worf Had The Flu
* CharacterDeath: Shot dead by Envy. He later has a funeral to prove that [[KilledOffForReal yes, he is truly dead.]]

* KilledOffForReal: Shot dead by Envy

* PerpetualSmiler / StepfordSmiler: His eyes rarely reflect light, but he's ''always'' smiling, to the point that it's highly disconcerting when he drops it (the most notable times are when [[spoiler:Envy disguises themselves as Gracia before killing him]], and in the OVA right before shooting Heathcliffe dead). ** However, his eyes are almost always lit up when he's around his family, so it's likely that those are the few times [[WhenHeSmiles when his smiles are genuine]]. ** His StepfordSmiler status is likely due to what happened in Ishval; in a tent, he tells Mustang that he'll "swallow up every horrible thing [he's] done here," and smile when he's around Gracia.

* ShipperOnDeck: For Edward and Winry, to [[SheIsNotMyGirlfriend great effect]]. ** Also non-specifically for Mustang, whom he tells to "Get yourself a wife!" The exact manga panel where Hughes says that to Mustang features Hawkeye prominently in the foreground telling him to be quieter on the phone in a rather wife-like way. * SickeninglySweethearts: With his wife.

** Notably, he looks like a character from a BaraGenre story, but with the sparkles that would normally go with a more {{Bishonen}} character appearing in a {{Yaoi}} comic, combining two different sorts of HoYay into one character.

* GeniusBruiser: The application process for the position of state alchemist is akin to presenting and defending a scientific research dissertation, and his alchemy happens to be [[FullContactMagic more physical than most]]. You can even tell through his alchemy how much of a genius he is: all alchemical creations have slight cracks/lines on them that reveal their crafted nature. Major Armstrong's creations are ALWAYS blemish-free and expertly crafted, seemingly sculpted by hand rather than synthesized on the fly. The man could sculpt Michelangelo's David with his fists if he wanted to.

* TiredOfRunning[=/=]RightMakesMight[=/=]CharacterizationMarchesOn: When he took part in the Ishval Massacre years before the start of the story, the meaningless genocide didn't sit right with his conscience. He was gradually overwhelmed to the point that he got himself dropped out before it was complete by showing mercy to two innocent women who survived his death trap. This became his [[MyGreatestFailure greatest failure]] over the years, feeling he should've stood and fought and turned against the injustice (like the many disgusted soldiers who [[UnfriendlyFire up and killed their CO's]]), and earned much constant scolding as a "coward" from his more stalwart sister. When Mustang lays out the truth for him about TheIlluminati within Amestris and suggests he get out while he can, he vows not to back out of combating Father's conspiracy, then later refuses a chance to escape when he and his sister are given a clearing during their battle with Sloth, which leads to the CrowningMomentOfAwesome that is [[spoiler:Alex and Sig Curtis killing the large homunculus]]. This is the main source of fairly impressive character development in a character mainly there for the laughs. * TheWorfEffect: Despite being a Lightning Bruiser {{Badass}}, Olivier easily hands his ass to him when they fight. {{Justified}} though, as Alex was not fighting to kill as he did when fighting Sloth.

* CounterpartComparison: She in some ways ressemble General Esdeath from Manga/AkameGaKiru: Both are SocialDarwinist generals that fought on the north and are AMotherToHerMen. Though they have important differences: Olivia might be a social darwinist, but deep down she is still a good person, while Esdeath takes her darwinism too much and claims that she doesn´t feel empathy for the weak. Even worse, Esdeath takes extreme pleasure in [[Sadist inflicting pain and despair in her enemies]] while Olivia never shows any interest in doing so. Finnaly, while Olivia felt disgusted at the Central's corruption, Esdeath is okay with the empire's corruption as long [[BloodKnight she is allowed to instigate wars]].
