He came to rule Amestris after leading his nation out of a bloody civil war and setting up a military dictatorship. He is also [[spoiler: the homonculus Pride and Dante's second-in-command.]] And in TheMovie it turns out [[spoiler: he's the alternate universe's version of Fritz Lang.]] Who knew?

Ironically, the current picture is not of Basque Grand, but of [[spoiler: Envy impersonating him.]]

A state alchemist who served in Ishval, and creator of the red crystals. Due to his experience in the war he deserts the military, living a quiet life as a country doctor, until trouble comes knocking on his door.

A former State Alchemist who participated in the Ishval war. Kimblee is a sociopath and a sadist, believing that "people are empty, worthless beings". He does, however, have some respect for the chemical properties of human beings: he specializes in transmuting things and [[WhyAmITicking people]] into [[StuffBlowingUp explosives]].

* CharacterExaggeration: Manga Kimblee is an affably evil, philosophical Darwinist with a streak for sadism and a love of explosions. The anime version of Kimblee (which was the first to be featured as a shown character) really only had those last two traits, and they were all there was to him. Justified, since when the 2003 anime was being made, Kimblee had yet to appear in person for more than one or two panels, and all there was to base his character on was the implications [[CompleteMonster that the Ishval campaign had for him.]]

A homunculus so greedy he won't play second fiddle to anyone, even his creator. Was a failed transmutation by Dante of a lover.

* FoeYay - because he is the transmutation of one of Dante's lovers, he involuntarily feels affection towards her and is drawn to her home, despite the horrible things she does to him.

* SuicideByCop - With the prospect of being imprisoned forever by Dante, he goads Ed into killing him, and with his last words, tells Ed how to kill homonculi.

When the Elric brothers tried to revive their dead mother Trisha, they got more than what they bargained for. Immediately afterwards Ed thought he killed her but she came back to life under the care of Dante. She has the appearance of the Elric's mother and infiltrates the inner reaches of the military.

* ManipulativeBastard: Plays with Ed and Al's heads throughout their battle, actually convincing the latter to try and protect her.

An elderly woman who lives in a mansion in the woods with her current student Lyra, and Izumi's alchemy teacher. Revealed to be the creator of the homunculi, using them as pawns to retain her immortality. She is the former lover (possibly wife) of Hohenheim and the mother of his first son, who currently serves her as the homunculus Envy. She then takes over poor Lyra's body to make her goals come true...

* AbusiveParents: Arguable, especially if you do not consider Envy her son. While she doesn't treat him particularly badly, she isn't above manipulating him emotionally. She was utterly apathetic to losing him to The Gate at the end of the series, as well.

* BodySurf: Dante plans to do this when she learns that her bodies are decaying at an alarming rate. Poor Lyra and Rose.
* TheCameo: Dante pops up in episode 58 of the second anime, as well as in the "Let's Nab Oprah!" episode of TheBoondocks. She is in her elderly body in both of these appearances.

She has a very brief struggle with Edward before starting her HannibalLecture, but it literally lasts for less than thirty seconds. Instead of fighting them after her plans get derailed, she escapes in order to get Pride to take her place. Most likely justified, though, considering the state of her vessel.
