!Main Characters
[[folder:Sousuke Sagara]]
!! Sergeant Sousuke Sagara
[[quoteright:240:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/SagaraSousukepicture_8677.JPG]]
->Voiced by: Creator/TomokazuSeki (JP), Creator/ChrisPatton (EN)

The protagonist of the series. He is an approximately 16 year old sergeant within the paramilitary counter-terrorist force, Mithril. He is an Arm Slave specialist in the SRT (Special Response Team) of the Western Pacific Battle Group "Tuatha de Danaan". His call sign is Uruz-7 and his ID number is B-3128, and he operates as the team point-man.

The picture on the right is one of those rare moments where he actually resembles [[RidiculouslyCuteCritter Bonta-kun]].
----
* AccidentalPervert: It happens so many times that Kaname eventually ''knows'' that it's NotWhatItLooksLike.
* AceCustom: In the light novels, when Sousuke participates in underground AS battles, he pilots an Rk-91 Savage painted white and navy blue like the Arbalest, which he dubs "Crossbow". Subverted in that the Crossbow is '''under'''-powered; the Rk-91 is an older model which uses a diesel engine, which is less powerful than the gas turbine engines most other 2nd generation Arm Slaves have (to say nothing of the 3rd generation's Palladium reactors).
* AlliterativeName: '''S'''ousuke '''S'''agara.
* AlmightyJanitor:
** Despite being insanely skilled and competent, saving the day countless times, he [[LimitedAdvancementOpportunities remains a sergeant for the entire series]]. Partly explained by his [[{{Dismotivation}} lack of motivation to move up in rank]] and how he [[TheStoic just plain doesn't care]]; Mao actually calls him out on it in ''The Second Raid'' after he admits that his only plan for his future is to keep following orders.
** After ''TSR'', he's now working at half his previous pay (as leverage for being allowed to live at least part of his life as a normal teenager in Japan with Kaname).
* AnguishedDeclarationOfLove: Thusfar, combining all the different canonical material for the series, Sousuke has received around five of these. Out of these five, he's [[CompletelyMissingThePoint misunderstood]] or [[SelectiveObliviousness blown off]] four of them.
* AnimalMotifs: A cute little dog, during more comedic occasions or a wolf, during serious situations. Though a more plot significant one is a tiger (seeing how he's the "son of Badakhshan's tiger," as well as his eventually having a tiger as a pet).
* AntiHero: He's a good guy who willing to do bad things to save the day, such as the willingness to use torture and deception and execute any terrorists detained.
* BadDreams: He's eventually shown (in the novels) to start having nightmares about [[spoiler: Kaname]], and even his dead mother (who died protecting him, telling him to "fight" and "never give up"). As a matter fact, these nightmares are pretty much the only mention and thoughts he has about his beloved mom (as he's normally [[TheStoic not a very sentimental person]]).
* BadLiar: He ''sucks'' at it. Pretty much any {{Muggle}} he tries to lie to is not convinced.
* BandageHunk: There are quite a few {{Fanservice}}-laden instances where he's [[ShirtlessScene shirtless except for some bandages]].
* BeautifulDreamer: He inspires this with many people. Now how well they [[DudeShesLikeInAComa restrain themselves is a different story...]]
* {{BFG}}: Sousuke's newest AS, the Laevatein, is equipped with a ridiculously powerful Multi-purpose Demolition Howitzer cannon. It's intense firepower and huge recoil makes it impossible to use under real-life conditions and normal physics. It has to be used in conjunction with the lambda driver to nullify all the those drawbacks.
* BigDamnHeroes: The way Sousuke tends to make his awesome entrances to save the day. He does it so often, it gets to the point where [[ArchEnemy Gauron]] actually {{lampshades}} it mockingly when he tackles and holds him down. "Well well, how do you like this? It's such a disgrace like this, isn't it? You can't act like a big damn hero and save the day in a cool way."
* BirdsOfAFeather: He bonds with Shinji through their shared love of Arm Slaves.
* BookDumb: Being raised by the KGB and mujahideen as a ChildSoldier has left some massive gaping voids in his education. He's a TeenGenius when it comes to military strategies and techniques and the maintenance and operation of Arm Slaves... but he has little to no knowledge of Japanese history, can't wrap his mind around modern literature, and can barely ''read'' classical literature and poetry thanks to his complete lack of familiarity with more archaic and poetic forms of the Japanese language. As a result, he often struggles with his high school homework.
* CantHoldHisLiquor:
** Despite being in the military ever since he was young, he doesn't drink. He's shown to be disgusted at the idea of it, and can't understand how others can stand it. As a result, he has zero tolerance for the stuff. Especially pronounced in the manga, where he takes a small sip of amazake (a drink that has very low alcohol content), and promptly gets dead drunk, complete with the fever and loss of strength. Kaname even {{lampshades}} it, telling him he '''really''' can't hold his liquor. He ends up dropping unconscious, and even after waking up, he's ''still'' drunk.
** This could be a holdover from his KGB training; as an assassin in Helmajistan (what used to be Afghanistan), abstinence from alcohol would be a necessary part of his cover as a mujahadin. It also helps to note that he's also raised as a Muslim[[note]]Or at least some Islamic values, he isn't really that religious[[/note]], where UsefulNotes/{{Islam}} forbid their followers to drink any alcohol.
** As of recently in the novels, he ''literally'' CantHoldHisLiquor, due to [[spoiler:debilitating internal injuries courtesy of a rifle round that relieved him of a portion of his liver among other things.]]
*** Sousuke himself is fine with that. [[spoiler:After a rather unpleasant experience in Hong Kong involving whiskey (and Gauron), he ''really'' doesn't want to see alcohol again.]]
* CatchPhrase:
** "[[BlatantLies Mondai nai/Not a problem.]]"
** Before Kaname found out about Mithril and everything else surrounding Sousuke, he always used "It's a coincidence" to justify his following her.
* ChickMagnet: Let's see, there's [[OfficialCouple Kaname]], Tessa, Nami (from the novels), Ena Saeki, Gray, and countless girls from his school (that are just too scared to approach him, but nonetheless fangirl and drool over him). And that's not even getting into how EvenTheGuysWantHim.
* ChildSoldier: He was trained as an assassin for the KGB ever since he was 2-3 years old. Sousuke fits quite neatly between the Talented and Tragic flavors; he isn't angsty or traumatized (much), but he has severe difficulties coping with civilian life, rarely bothers trying to do ''anything'' non-violently and sees everything in terms of its value in a guerilla combat situation.
* CloudCuckooLander: A very hilarious example in that he is generally serious, by-the-book and not crazy by any standards. The problem is that, due to having NoSocialSkills, his classmates (and the viewers) see his behavior as... UNUSUAL.
* CluelessChickMagnet: He ''never'' notices all the girls he attracts.
* CoincidenceMagnet: [[spoiler: Being the person that has the most connections to all known "whispereds"]].
* CombatPragmatist: He uses small arms in close quarters that involves martial arts and his background as an anti-Soviet guerrilla in Afghansitan gave him training and ideas to take on armored vehicles and Arm Slaves when cornered.
* TheComicallySerious:
** He finds humor in practically nothing, and ''never'' gets a joke. Doesn't help that he's a PerpetualFrowner who has apparently forgotten how to ''smile''. Despite, or perhaps because of, all this, he's well known for being ''the'' funniest and most beloved character in the entire series.
** He eventually plays the straight man to his own mecha. [[CrowningMomentOfFunny The two of them agree that the mecha has a better sense of humor]].
* ConvenientlyAnOrphan: Although his mother's death while protecting him, along with her dramatic LastWords for him to "live," "never give up," and "fight!" serve to help make him the CrazySurvivalist he is today, it mainly seems to serve the purpose of making him an orphan with no ties. Since he has no one waiting for him, it justifies why he can carelessly put himself in such dangerous situations without worry or care.
* CrazyPrepared:
** Goes hand in hand with his HammerSpace and HyperspaceArsenal. It's also {{Lampshaded}} numerous times by shocked and exasperated bystanders. Especially pronounced in an episode of ''Fumoffu'', where he was [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdSTuFF764Q&feature=related asked to get rid of all of his weapons]] during a hostage situation. It takes him a ''long'' time to put all of his weapons out in a (huge) pile, which makes the kidnappers horrified.
** Worth noting the pile includes a 9mm handgun, extra clips, at least five frag grenades, and from what else could be noticed, one assault rifle and ''[[UpToEleven two L.A.W.s]].'' And he managed to hide all of this inside regular civilian clothes!
** Oh it goes beyond mere weaponry. In the very same situation as above, he not only prepares a counter-hostage of original hostage-taker ahead of time [[spoiler: okay, a pretend hostage, but still]], he thoroughly researches *each and every gang member* and pulls off ShameIfSomethingHappened on ''all of them''.
* CrazySurvivalist: Heck, he even carries a special biochemical suit on him, ''just in case''.
* DrillSergeantNasty:
** Boy, does he make one ''nasty'' drill sergeant. He [[BreakTheCutie breaks a whole army of cuties]] into AxCrazy killers in record time. Extra irony in that it's hinted that he makes a more cruel and sadistic teacher even when compared with [[AxCrazy Gauron]] (who was actually a well respected AS instructor for a camp). Granted, this was Mao's fault since he was using her guidebook.
** One chapter of ''Overload'' has Kaname trying to get a slimmer figure for swimsuit season; Sosuke offers to help and ends up becoming this, putting her in a Bonta-kun suit that forces her to exercise while he shouts insults. Eventually he apologizes, explaining that her original weight-loss methods (which included skipping meals) were dangerously unhealthy and he was trying to get her to realize that.
* EarnYourHappyEnding: [[spoiler:In ''FMP! Another'', Clara Mao considers contacting "Seagal" (one of Sousuke's aliases) for help, but Kurz insists that she leave him alone due to this trope.]]
* {{Expy}}: Gets compared to [[Anime/MobileSuitGundamWing Heero Yuy]] a lot, since both are [[TheStoic Stoic]] [[ChildSoldiers Teen Soldiers]]-slash-HumongousMecha pilots who come out of their shells due to {{Bodyguard Crush}}es on {{Ordinary High School Student}}s (namely, Relena and Kaname); the main difference is that Heero lacks Sousuke's comedic awkwardness and can blend into regular society much better. Years later Sousuke would get his own Expy in the ''Gundam'' franchise: [[Anime/MobileSuitGundam00 Setsuna F. Seiei]], who unlike Heero actually does have a degree of Sousuke's social awkwardness, as well as a Kurz-like ally and Gauron-like archrival.
* FishOutOfWater: Pretty much the whole premise of the series. Military nut who has no social skills gets shoved into a school where he wreaks havoc.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: He has a cross-shaped "hero scar" on his jaw, as visible above.
* {{Hammerspace}}[=/=]HyperspaceArsenal: {{Lampshaded}} in both ''Fumoffu'' and ''The Second Raid''.
* HatesBeingTouched:
** Due to his highly paranoid nature. It's shown later that only a select few (which you can count on your fingers) can without provoking a very violent reaction.
** Best shown in one episode of ''The Second Raid'' where Chidori drags him out to get a haircut; he ends up freaking out and holding the barber at gunpoint. Chidori has to do it herself, and he falls asleep during the process, [[PowerOfTrust such is his trust in her]].
* HeroicBSOD: He has an epic one in ''The Second Raid''.
* HeroWithAnFInGood: He's one of the good guys, but he tends to cause a lot of problems in some of his solutions to things, such as blowing up his school locker when he finds a suspicious letter in it in Fumoffu. And he interprets said love letter as a letter of challenge based on the bits of the letter that survived the explosion.
* ILetGwenStacyDie: [[spoiler:How he feels about Nami. He also feels horrible about Kyoko getting injured on his watch, thanks in part to Ono-D chewing him out for it.]]
* ImprobableAge: Even beyond being a 16-year-old genius secret agent and sergeant working for an anti-terrorist organization, before that he was a prepubescent KGB assassin.
* InformedJudaism: Was raised Muslim by the Mujahedin in Afghanistan/Helmajistan, but the only Islamic practice he routinely follows is not drinking alcohol, which might be more the result of his state of perpetual paranoia than any religious upbringing.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Barring his near-sociopathic tendencies which is kinda justified, he's a actually a NiceGuy who cares about his friends in & out of school/military & loves Chidori very much.
* JustAKid: Especially pronounced during the arc where he was sent to assassinate Gauron. All the teammates that he was forced to join up with (other than Gray) found it hard to believe that Mithril would send a child to help them, and refused to take his advice.
* KickThemWhileTheyAreDown: He's definitely [[CombatPragmatist not averse]] to doing this to his opponents.
* KillerRabbit: BONTA-KUN. That is all.
* LackOfEmpathy: A product of his upbringing; He's by no means a [[TheSociopath Sociopath]], but he finds it difficult to understand other people's feelings, and tends to do very morally ambiguous things without much consideration for others. Most of the time it's played for laughs. There are numerous times where he finds himself unable to understand why someone feels fear or sadness (even when someone died).
* LethalChef: In the manga, he's shown to be this due to his [[CloudCuckooLander lack of common sense]]. He ends up cooking rice in a rice cooker... over a fire. Indoors. Which results in the others fainting from the fumes.
* LightningBruiser: All the Arm Slaves [[spoiler:barring the [[AceCustom Savage "Longbow Custom"]]]] he pilots are like this, being very fast & powerful [[spoiler:especially the [[InfinityMinusOneSword Laevatein]]]]. His battle style in & out of Arm Slaves is also like this, preferring to charge in for medium-to-close range combat.
* LoveHurts: And ''how''. His whole HeroicBSOD in ''TSR'' was pretty much caused by being ripped away from Kaname after he was starting to feel something for her.
* LuminescentBlush: He has a couple of [[NotSoStoic rare moments]] in ''Fumoffu''.
* MadBomber: Definitely. Especially in ''Fumoffu'' and ''Overload''. And no, it's not everyone from Mithril - it's mainly just him.
* MagneticHero: He ''tries'' to [[TheStoic not get attached to people]] and [[LonersAreFreaks just stay a loner]]... but TrueCompanions just keep flocking to him.
* MarriedToTheJob: Kurz and Mao tend to {{Lampshade}} this, calling Sousuke a bore that doesn't care about anything else except his job. This eventually becomes a major plot point for ''TSR''.
* MiniMecha: His Bonta-kun costume in ''Fumoffu'' is basically a human-sized AS.
* MomentKiller: It's pretty much 100% guaranteed that if he's saying something or doing anything that could [[IDidntMeanToTurnYouOn possibly be construed as romantic or seductive]], he'll kill the mood almost immediately by revealing his intentions to be purely pragmatic if not actively violent.
* MoreDakka: [[spoiler: The ARX-8 Laevatein is already a GameBreaker machine to begin with. Then during the final assault on Amalgam, Sousuke & some of the MITHRIL engineers develop a Long-Range Booster Jet Pack called the XL-3 that not only gives it the ability to fly but also adds [[ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill ANOTHER SHOTGUN, TWO ASSAULT RIFLES, ALMOST A DOZEN MISSILES]], & to top it off [[GatlingGood TWO GATTLING CANNONS.]]]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aY3aUSdmmXo Gloriously animated]] in ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWarsZ Tengoku-hen''
* NewTransferStudent: His cover story to allow him to transfer into Kaname's school without anyone being the wiser about his ties to Mithril.
* NoGuyWantsToBeChased: He does ''not'' take well to aggressive methods of romantically pursuing him. As a matter of fact, it almost seems like he subconsciously turns ''up'' the [[SelectiveObliviousness level of his obliviousness]] when his admirer becomes too direct. In contrast, when the girls act more shy and cute, and tell him touching things like [[PowerOfTrust "I trust you,"]] his heart starts fluttering. (Case in point: Why Tessa is rather unsuccessful at wooing him, versus Kaname and Nami, both of whom he admits deeper feelings for.)
* NoSocialSkills: Someone once described Sousuke as that character in a TabletopRPG who traded in all those "worthless" character points in social skills and instead put them into combat abilities. He is a nice guy, he just has no concept at all of what's expected of someone in a high school environment. Naturally, the writers put him in a high school environment, often.
* NotGoodWithPeople: Boy does he suck at dealing with people (in ways that don't [[SociopathicHero involve]] [[MadBomber explosives]], that is). He's shown to actually be capable of understanding and relating to ''animals'' more than humans (such as in the cases of Mousuke and Shiro, both of whom he managed to communicate with, and even understood their actions).
* NotSoStoic:
** The most obvious one would be his huge HeroicBSOD during ''TSR'', where he thinks [[spoiler: Kaname died]]. But even then, he didn't cry. What ''really'' takes the cake is, in the novels, the one and only time he's ever shown to actually ''break down crying'' and show his vulnerability as a young boy is during the Behemoth Arc. ''Not'' over Kaname, ''not'' over Tessa, ''not'' over any of his comrades dying... but over his shame and hurt pride when his plan for the hostage situation failed to succeed. Heck, he didn't even cry when [[spoiler: Kurz died]].
** In the final novel, [[spoiler:it looks like he's going to die on Meridia Island and he makes peace with that. But after he sees a video from his classmates at Jindai High asking him to come back to school, he breaks down, sobbing that he wants to live so he can see his friends even if it's just one last time. Thankfully, Al manages to save the day]]
** An often-overlooked (and utterly hilarious) one is in the third episode of ''Fumoffu!''. After Kaname STILL hasn't come back from washing off the watermelon juice Sousuke [[ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill accidentally covered her with]] (ItMakesSenseInContext), Sousuke goes off to look for her. He's told that she was seen going to a mansion on a cliff, and after his attempts to ask for her there failed (she was ''seriously'' [[{{Tsundere}} not happy with him]] and told the kid running the mansion that Sousuke was a sick pervert stalking her), Sousuke...[[ColdBloodedTorture imagines what the people there are doing to her]]. [[http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f71/Sil_Screenies/RUN.png The resulting look of complete fury on Sousuke's face]] [[OhCrap is enough to scare Chuck Norris]]. Keep in mind that all the times she's ''legitimately'' kidnapped this season, Sousuke is still his eternally composed self.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: He's shown to have done this when Mao interviewed him for a position on her squad. Suspicious of the mysterious organization sponsoring the training camp (actually Mithril), he deliberately underperformed during tests so as not to stand out, and insisted that his victory in an AS match (where he won overwhelmingly over another AS that was much superior in make) was entirely a fluke.
* ObliviousToLove: At one point someone angrily ''yells'' at him about how much she loves him, and he never notices, and he should just admit he wants to be with Kaname...and there's evidence he ''still'' didn't get it.
* AnOddPlaceToSleep: Prefers to sleep ''underneath'' beds.
* OfficialCouple: [[spoiler: At the very end on the last chapter of the novel, with Kaname.]]
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: He's a consummate and serious professional, but when he sees Chidori with a former boyfriend, he starts mixing up his words and giving orders for an exfiltration to men who aren't there, obviously working from muscle memory, all the while speaking in his usual tone.
* PerpetualFrowner:
** Alluded to even in the beginning. Kurz is exasperated when he tries to get Sousuke to put on a decent smile for his photo ID. He ends up looking like he has facial neuralgia. Also referenced by some characters feeling it's a pity that such an attractive boy looks perpetually angry and unapproachable (with slanting down eyebrows and lips pressed firmly in a straight line).
** Unnervingly, one of the few times he's shown to smile naturally [[http://www.mangafox.com/manga/full_metal_panic_sigma/v05/c019/24.html can be seen here]]. Yikes, [[SociopathicHero Sousuke]].
** He does legitimately smile a few times. In particular, in Episode 1 of the first anime when he tells his new classmates at Jindai that he loves to go fishing, and in ''Fumoffu'' Episode 2 when he thanks Kaname for lending him her notes for Japanese class.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: He's the poster boy for this. You ''know'' he is when he considers blasting holes in the wall to get to the room next door as being [[ThereWasADoor more efficient than just using the door]].
* ProperlyParanoid: The humor value of his seemingly ridiculous overreactions to aspects of civilian life others take for granted is somewhat tempered by the fact that people genuinely are out to get him and Kaname.
* TheQuietOne: Let's face it, no matter ''who'' he's with, he will ''always'' be the person who speaks the least. This is especially pronounced later in the novels, when he's with Nami's group.
* TheRainman: He at least borders on this due to his extensive knowledge of all things military and complete lack of social skills. Heck, he didn't realise that ''kissing a girl without her permission'' was a bad thing in the anime.
* SacrificedBasicSkillForAwesomeTraining: He was raised by the KGB to be an assassin ever since he was 2-3 years old. Spending his entire life in the military has left him completely incapable of even understanding civilian life, let alone actually passing as a civilian himself, and tends to lead him to some very off-kilter interpretations of other peoples' behavior:
---> '''Sousuke:''' [Chidori] seems to be bothered by something. Either that or she's been abusing drugs.\\
'''Kyoko:''' Er... I don't know about that...
* ScarsAreForever: His little, cross-shaped scar on his cheek is permanent.
* ScrewTheRulesImBeautiful:
** He has a mission to follow Kaname around and protect her from terrorists, but he must not let her know he's doing that. So to Kaname and everyone else, he's acting like a creepy Stalker With a Crush. The only thing is, she completely underreacts to his insanely creepy and scary behavior, even blushing and acting extremely shy when talking about him. In fact, hardly knowing him (other than seeing him throw himself off a train to continue stalking her), she actually starts fishing around for an answer if he has a girlfriend or lover, and is shown to be ridiculously happy when he tells her she's his "special person." It undoubtedly has quite a bit to do with his good looks, seeing how she acts towards men who don't even do nearly as much crap as Sōsuke but are ugly. It's only when he gets to the point where he's on her balcony at night holding her panties that she gets angry.
** In the novels, his being able to screw the rules because of his looks is [[{{Lampshaded}} lampshaded]]. He had always been a bit suspicious about how all the other guerrillas that were working with him treated him a lot nicer than they treated anyone else, and he got away with a lot more. Turns out that they all wanted to [[EvenTheGuysWantHim jump him]].
* SecondLove: To Tessa. Not in the anime, but in the novels, her first love was Bunny Morauta (the whispered that built the Arbalest) - they were girlfriend and boyfriend. He ended up dying, and she later ends up falling for Sousuke (Within two months of Bunny's suicide!).
* SheIsNotMyGirlfriend: A variation of this is found during the party on the Tuatha De Dannan, in regard to Kaname. Kurz: "''Any'' man would fall for her." Sousuke (quickly and coldly): "I wouldn't know. I'm not interested." So Sousuke ''is'' [[NotSoStoic capable of]] acting like a {{Tsundere}}...
* ShirtlessScene: He has one even in the beginning, where he's being bandaged up by Kurz. And then there's that completely gratuitous shot in ''Fumoffu''.
* ShotgunsAreJustBetter: While using the Arbalest, Sousuke's favorite weapon is a Boxer shotcannon, which is essentially a mecha-sized shotgun.
* TheSpartanWay: What Sousuke subjects his schools' Rugby team to. His results could be considered [[BrainwashedAndCrazy a little too successful]].
* TheStoic: He's famous for this. Not to mention that it's pretty much ''expected'' of him from his superior and colleagues. ''Any'' display of emotions by him tends to be met with shock by people who know him.
* StrawNihilist: [[HeroicBSOD Temporarily]] near the end of ''TSR'', and in his backstory.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: In his backstory, he's shown to look exactly like his mother.
* SuspiciouslySpecificDenial: See BadLiar.
* TalkToTheFist: More of the form "Talk To The Bullet." Being the CombatPragmatist he is, he tends to do this when his enemies show an opening and are giving long speeches.
* TranquilFury: He always maintains his composure and cool, even when utterly pissed off.
* TeenGenius:
** Gauron was well known for being a genius at handling AS in Amalgam. Gauron is 40-50 years old. And then here's Sousuke, who is 16 years old, and can actually fight evenly with Gauron (minus the Lambda Driver - and even then, Sousuke ends up being able to handle it extremely well in a remarkably small amount of time, with little guidance). It's even more pronounced when one considers that the boy was a genius even when he was only 8-12 years old.
** Kalinin mentions during their final duel to the death that while Sousuke is good at everything, he can not beat specialists of the area, ie Kalinin in CQC, Melissa in strategy, Kurz in shooting, and Clouseau in AS piloting. Effectively making him JackofAllTrades.
* ThatManIsDead: This reaction is provoked whenever Gauron calls him "Kashim." But only when [[ArchEnemy Gauron]] calls him that. Because he ''[[BerserkButton hates]]'' Gauron [[TermsOfEndangerment acting like he was his friend]].
* TrashTalk: A tactic he uses several times in the series.
* TriggerHappy: No matter which canon, he can ''definitely'' be described as this. Now ''how'' TriggerHappy depends on which source. He's at his most outrageous and violent when in ''Fumoffu'' and the ''Overload'' manga, where he has traces of AxCrazy as well. In the ''Overload'' manga, he's even shown getting ''withdrawal symptoms'' when forced not to use his gun or shoot anyone.
* TroubledButCute: [[{{Bishonen}} Good looking]], 16-year-old male that has extreme Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, plants land mines around his school, bombs public and private property, and points gun at people? Yes, he qualifies. This is furthered even more when one realizes that, in his school, it's implied that a ''bunch'' of girls ([[EvenTheGuysWantHim and guys]]) have precocious crushes on him, but are just too scared to directly approach him.
* TheUnfettered: He has a tendency to treat everything as if it's a military mission, which often leads to him pulling guns on Kaname's classmates, blowing up lockers, or threatening to torture people he thinks are spies trying to get at Kaname. Kaname hitting him is the only way to effectively stop him.
* VirginityMakesYouStupid: An obvious virgin, and a ''complete'' idiot when it comes to anything not involving fighting.
* WhatBeautifulEyes: Although his eyes don't have a particularly special color, they ''are'' big and very pretty. Gauron [[LoveAtFirstSight initially became infatuated with him]] because of seeing his [[http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/SousukeGaussianGirl.jpg emotionless, cold eyes]]. To put it in Gauron's words: "''Anyone'' would say they're beautiful."
* WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove: For the majority of the series. He ''literally'' doesn't understand the meaning of "love," even when Kaname tries to explain it to him.
* WhenHeSmiles: During the moments where his face relaxes and he lightens up, people who see him like that tend to have their heart racing BIG TIME.
* WouldHitAGirl: Or [[ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill shoot]], [[PersonOfMassDestruction bomb]], whatever. He definitely isn't sexist when he deems the person a threat, that's for sure.

[[folder:Kaname Chidori]]
!! Kaname Chidori
[[quoteright:240:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chidori_kaname.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Creator/SatsukiYukino (JP), Creator/LuciChristian (EN)

Kaname is the main female protagonist of the story, and appears to be a "normal" 16 year-old Japanese high school student at first glance.[[note]]The character was taken from a friend of the authors also named Kaname Chidori.[[/note]] However, the discovery of her Whispered abilities attracts the attention of terrorist organizations. As a result, Sousuke has been assigned by Mithril to protect her. While Sosuke Sagara's battle intuition generally saves her from dangerous situations, she often considers Sosuke's instincts an irritant in daily high school events, leading to countless comical situations. Nonetheless, she and Sosuke continue to grow closer, to the point where they have expressed their feelings for each other.
------
* ActionSurvivor: After The Second Raid. She's an ordinary girl with no military training or anything aside from powers that are useless in a direct offensive purpose but she's managed to outwit and beat up assassins and is one of the few people Sousuke is genuinely afraid of.
* AlmostKiss: An ''agonizing'' amount with Sousuke. Normally he doesn't even notice or realize that they almost did, much to Kaname's embarrassment and [[MomentKiller annoyance]].
%%* AngerBornOfWorry
* ArmorPiercingSlap: She's pretty much the only one who can successfully beat Sousuke up and deal as much damage to him as she does.
* AscendedFangirl: She frequently references to action movies. During her first adventure with Sousuke, she even compares the situation her, Sousuke and Kutz are in to a film she sees, getting some real life experience with her nerdy pass time.
* AsideGlance: What she does when she tricks Sousuke (who was the NewTransferStudent) into doing garbage duty.
* AudienceSurrogate: She's ostensibly the normal one of the main characters despite being a Whispered. We see Mithril and its workings through Kaname's eyes in addition to Sousuke's.
* BadassAdorable: Arguably, especially on the "badass" side. The "adorable" part comes through from time to time.
* BrooklynRage: She spent about eight years of her childhood in New York City, which she herself admits is why she's used to being more open and aggressive than most Japanese people.
* CannotLiveWithThemCannotLiveWithoutThem: She constantly claims that she can't stand Sousuke and all the troubles he brings. And then she realizes just how much she needs and wants him when he gets redeployed.
* ClingyJealousGirl: She gets incredibly jealous anytime she realizes Sousuke's spending time with another woman. She often butts heads with Tessa, such as in episodes 8 and 9 of Fumoffu.
* CryCute: She has a few times where she bursts into tears.
* CuteSportsClubManager: In the Rugby episode of ''Fumoffu''.
* DisappearedDad: Her father is actually alive and well. However, Kaname has a strained relationship with him and he lives in New York with Kaname's sister.
* DudeHesLikeInAComa: She ''almost'' brings herself to kiss Sousuke while he's sleeping, but quickly realizes this trope. So she ends up [[{{Tsundere}} dunking his head in cold water instead]].
* DudeMagnet: Played with. She's known around Jindai HS as "The School Idol Nobody Wants to Date" because, while the guys recognize that she's incredibly attractive, smart, and athletic, her short fuse is a major deal-breaker. Thus they're content to fawn over her without actually wanting to ask her out.
* ForcefulKiss: [[spoiler: Twice by Leonard Testarossa.]]
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan:
** To Sousuke in ''The Second Raid''. With several knees to the face and stomach.
** Did one to ''herself'' after being kidnapped by Gauron due to the info flooding her mind. She proceeded to silence all of the noise by slamming her head into a tree.
* GrandTheftMe: [[spoiler: Kaname spends the last 1/3 of the series being "possessed" by Sofia, the Whisperer; it's foreshadowed by her sudden shift in attitude and willingness to go along with Leonard's plans, but becomes more obvious when Kaname exerts enough control to type "You are not me" on a computer Sofia's using.]]
* GratuitousEnglish: "Don't worry, everything's gonna happy <3"
* HeWentThatWay: What she does to help Sousuke escape from the police while he's dressed as Bonta-kun during an episode of ''Fumoffu''.
* HostageSituation: She tends to get in these a ''lot''. Even when it doesn't involve terrorists. Sousuke always handles it in his [[ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill typical crazy way]].
* InsultedAwake: [[spoiler:Late in the story, when Sousuke is attacking Merida Island, he contacts "Kaname" on the radio and starts calling her names -- because he knows Sophia has taken over Kaname's body, and uses the insults to give Kaname the push she needs to start fighting back. Interestingly, what got under her skin the most wasn't stuff like "You stupid bitch!" but rather Sousuke accusing her of being too gutless and weak-willed to resist Sophia herself.]]
* InvisibleParents: Kaname lives all by herself in Tokyo. Her mother died years ago and her father lives in New York along with her younger sister Ayame.
* LaughingMad: She has a crazy one she gives whenever she's lying about something (most of the time involving Sousuke).
* LuminescentBlush: She tends to do this when she misunderstands Sousuke's actions as being "bold" and "romantic." Cue Sousuke doing something to [[MomentKiller completely kill the mood]].
* MissingMom: Her mother died of illness before the start of the series.
* ModestyShorts: She wears these in an early chapter to prevent {{Panty Shot}}s.
* MomentKiller: What tends to happen any time it looks like things are getting too mushy between her and Sousuke. Most of the time, it's Sousuke who does this to her.
* NearRapeExperience: [[spoiler: An odd version; one of the indicators that "Kaname" isn't herself late in the series is that when Leonard tried to initiate sex with her, she wanted to go along with it but her body instinctively shoved him away. It's later revealed that "Kaname" is Sofia, and the shove was the real Kaname's response.]]
* OfficialCouple: [[spoiler: At the very end on the last chapter of the novel, with Sousuke.]]
* TheOphelia: Becomes one temporarily whenever she goes into her Whispered moments.
* SawItInAMovieOnce: During the rescue operation after the plane hijacking, she notes how the situation they're in (being pinned by enemy gunfire in a shallow ditch) resembled something she saw out of a movie.
* SexySoakedShirt: During the BattleInTheRain in ''The Second Raid''.
* SheCleansUpNicely: What she does in an episode of ''Fumoffu'', where she dressed in one of her mother's old kimonos and posed as an older, married woman who is having an affair with Sousuke. Needless to say, it was enough to make Sousuke become uncharacteristically shy and [[LuminescentBlush beet red]].
* SparklingStreamOfTears: She does this in one later episode of the first season. Kurz gets ''very'' angry at Sousuke for making her feel that sad.
* SplitPersonality: [[spoiler: Sophia pretty much acts like this, even if she was originally a person that lived 18 years ago. At the end of the series, she monologues that Sophia is still inside her mind but no longer seems malicious, apparently content to experience Kaname's life to make up for the one she didn't get to have personally]].
* SplitPersonalityTakeover: [[spoiler: While Sophia is the one in control]].
* StrappedToAnOperatingTable: She's subjected to this in the beginning of the first season.
* TheTalk: Kaname gives Sousuke a variation of this... on exactly what it means to "flirt" and "pick up girls." Needless to say, whatever she explained to him (done as a FastForwardGag) was enough to traumatize him, making him go completely white and break out in cold sweat, stammering that he "could never do that."
* TeenGenius: Being a Whispered likely has something to do with it.
* ThroughHisStomach: As Kaname is a {{Tsundere}} she naturally fulfills this trope. She's shown to have prepared a special meal for Sousuke on several occasions, either as reconciliation after losing her temper, or as ShipTease promptly followed by Sousuke doing something to make Kaname lose her temper.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: The tomboy to Tessa and Kyoko's girly girl.
* TooDumbToLive: In the rugby episode, she insults the OpposingSportsTeam (who are all about two heads taller and ''very'' muscular) by comparing them to gorillas. If Sousuke hadn't been around to help, things could have gotten ''very'' nasty.
* {{Tsundere}}: "Stupid Sousuke! It's not like I'm doing this because I like him or anything..." ([[LuminescentBlush Blush, blush]])
* TwitchyEye: Whenever she's trying not to blow her top.
* WhatDoesSheSeeInHim: What Leonard bitterly keeps wondering about Kaname, citing that Sousuke is a worse choice for a boyfriend because he's [[{{Hypocrite}} killed hundreds of people.]] Of course, if he would sit down and start figuring out [[SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan exactly what makes]] Sousuke so appealing, maybe he would find it easier to woo women.
* WrongGenreSavvy: Sometimes her GenreSavvy leads her astray, mostly because it's based on American action movies. For example, she refused to believe Tessa could be a captain because "[[FourStarBadass captains are tough old bastards like Sean Connery.]] [[BridgeBunny You're one of those people who read telegrams or something."]]
* YaoiFangirl: Especially pronounced in the novels.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: In the anime. The novels, however, describe her hair as black.

[[folder:Teletha Testarossa]]
!! Captain Teletha "Tessa" Testarossa
[[quoteright:240:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tessatestarossa.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Creator/{{Yukana}} (JP), Creator/HilaryHaag (EN)

Teletha "Tessa" Testarossa is the clumsy but charming Captain of the Mithril anti-terrorist organization's revered TDD-1 'Tuatha de Danaan'. She is American by birth but has lived on submarines and military bases for most of her life. She is also a child prodigy who rose to her relatively high rank at the age of only 16 after using her Whispered power to design the submarine. Tessa has silver hair (described as platinum/ash blonde) and grey eyes.
------
* ActionGirl: Look at her entry in the CrowningMomentOfAwesome page for this show. The proof is in the pudding.
* AlliterativeName: Teletha "Tessa" Testarossa. Not just the first letter, but every sound in her name is alliterative!
* AnguishedDeclarationOfLove: Which falls fantastically flat when Sousuke misunderstands it brilliantly.
* AttemptedRape: In the light novel and manga, she was almost ganged-raped by Amalgam soldiers. Fortunately for her, Melissa gun them down.
* BadassAdorable: It's hard to believe this moeblob is the commander of a next-gen nuclear submarine carrying a battalion of HumongousMecha. Fortunately, most enemies underestimate her because of this very reason, usually with grave consequences.
* BettyAndVeronica: The Betty to Kaname's Veronica.
* [[CantHoldHisLiquor Can't Hold Her Liquor]]: Much like Sousuke, she doesn't drink one bit. Also like Sousuke, this resulted in a hilariously low tolerance for alcohol as it's implied a ''single'' mixed drink (which would have about as much alcohol as a strong beer) knocked her so thoroughly out that she forgot what she did the night previously.
* TheCaptain: As Gauron found out, to his cost. "This is my ship, and I am her only Captain."
* CharacterTics: She has a habit of absentmindedly playing with her ponytail.
* CleanPrettyReliable: Tessa uses CPR as an excuse for trying to kiss Sousuke after he drowned. Kaname stops her in time for Sousuke to wake up by himself.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Gray eyes with silver hair.
* CuteClumsyGirl: Tends to trip quite often.
* DitzyGenius: Extremely talented due to being a Whispered, but otherwise look like an innocent airheaded teenage girl.
* DudeHesLikeInAComa: Unlike Kaname, Tessa has no problems whatsoever trying to take advantage of Sousuke in his sleep. It gets to the point of being a RunningGag that she tries to kiss/grope/molest him while he's sleeping somewhere else (and normally getting stopped by others before she goes too far).
* DudeMagnet: The moment it was announced that the bingo winner would get a (cheek) kiss from her, everyone in the hangar started up their fighting auras. ''For a bingo game''. To say nothing of the DeathGlare's that Sousuke got when she said she and him have a "special relationship".
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: When Tessa introduces herself as a NewTransferStudent, all the girls {{squee}} over how cute she is. Except a fuming Kaname...and even ''she'' gets turned on by Tessa's choice of bathing suit later on.
* ImTakingHerHomeWithMe: While all the guys clearly find her sexually attractive when she visits Sousuke and Kaname's high school in ''Fumoffu'', the girls go up in exclamation about how cute she is.
* ImprobableAge: A 16-year-old captain in a huge, anti-terrorist organization. Although this is justified by her Whispered status, her father being a well-known submarine captain himself, and Admiral Borda and Mardukas being family friends. Note that Borda repeatedly tried to discourage her from the task, and failed.
* {{Joshikousei}}: Even Mardukas and Sousake are stunned when she dresses up in her Jindai High uniform in ''Fumoffu''.
* LadyOfWar: As stated above, Tessa is a damn dangerous opponent and has a rather firmly military outlook.
* NewTransferStudent: For all of two episodes in ''Fumoffu''.
* NoGuyWantsToBeChased: Her... methods of pursuing Sousuke were not very well done (or well taken, for that matter). She didn't really seem to wise up to the fact that he does ''not'' react well when girls try to actively seduce him by throwing themselves at him or forcefully put him in [[NotWhatItLooksLike compromising situations]]. Numerous attempts at [[DudeShesLikeInAComa molesting him in his sleep]] probably didn't help things, either.
* ShellShockedVeteran: Shows serious signs of this after the events at Merida Island, as seen in ''Sigma''.
* SilkHidingSteel: In ''Continuing On My Own'' (''Invisible Victory'' episode 2), there's a moment where a member of the SRT jokingly suggests that they hand Tessa over to Amalgam in exchange for their safety. Tessa brings him back in line by personally threatening to shoot him dead on the spot unless he apologizes and reaffirms his loyalty to Mithril; when he expresses doubt that she'd actually do it, Tessa puts a bullet in the ground and reminds him that while he might have assumed she was just [[DistressedDamsel a delicate little fairytale princess]], she's a professional soldier through and through.
* SunnySunflowerDisposition: In one of her short stories. It led to a powerful CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming for her.
* TeenGenius: She's 16 and designed the Tuatha de Danaan. [[spoiler: This is likely due to her status as a Whispered, giving her knowledge that shouldn't possibly exist yet.]]
[[/folder]]

!Mithril
[[folder:Kurz Weber]]
!! Sergeant Kurz Weber
[[quoteright:240:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kurzweber.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Creator/ShinichiroMiki (JP), Creator/VicMignogna (EN)

Kurz is a member of Mithril and has the rank of Sergeant in the SRT (Special Response Team) of the Tuatha de Danaan (TDD-1) Pacific Battle Group. He has the call sign Uruz-6 and his ID number is B-3127. He is an SRT Arm Slave pilot and designated marksman, equally proficient with sniper rifles and Arm Slave long range precision cannons. It is said he can visualize the exact trajectory of a bullet, resulting in an almost inhuman accuracy. He most often forms a three-man cell with squadmate Sousuke Sagara and squad leader Melissa Mao. He is regarded as a finicky genius, burdening the Mithril mechanics with extremely difficult to understand complaints and requests.
--------
* BadassNormal: Unlike Sousuke, Kurz wasn't a child soldier and apart from beginning training with a rifle at 12, has nothing really remarkable about his military career. None of this stops him from being an utter badass with a sniper rifle, and was actually able to destroy sentry guns ''with a 2 second window'' of them appearing with his rifle.
* {{Bishonen}}: If the long hair isn't a dead giveaway. Amusingly enough this might actually have helped him getting closer to Kaname and Kyoko in one day than Sousuke did after a whole week (that and the Funny Foreigner trait he played up).
* BoisterousBruiser: Very much a party person, as he has no problem getting drunk with girls he picks up. He also has the loudest mouth among the main cast, which usually earns him a beating from Mao.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: He may be a flirt, but he's also a Sergeant by rank, with all the military training that implies. He's best at sniping, but force him into an AS battle or a close-quarters fight, and he'll do what he can.
* ButNotTooForeign: He's German, but was raised in Japan.
* ChivalrousPervert: He's usually the first one to jump on a situation to peep on girls, but god help you if you actually hurt one within earshot of him. He genuinely believes if you make a woman cry, you'll end up as an abusive husband.
* CripplingOverspecialization: It's unsurprising he's awesome with any long-range weapon but the moment he gets caught in a melee, he's even more useless than most civilians in the show. Mao later calls him out on it since he apparently focused so much on becoming a sniper that he neglected his hand-to-hand training. He can't even properly kick someone in the nads!
* DeathBySex: [[spoiler:Lampshaded by Sousuke when he first hears about Kurz and Mao, but as mentioned above, he gets better.]]
* DisneyDeath[=/=]NotQuiteDead: [[spoiler:In the final novel, ''Always Stand By Me, Part 2''. Turns out he was rescued by the Spetsnaz & pulls a BigDamnHeroes for Closeau & Mao during the final battle.]]
* {{Expy}}: Of [[Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion Ryoji Kaji]], though not to the extent Mao is one of Misato.
* FriendlySniper: Very friendly and outgoing to just about anyone (well, anyone that hasn't done him wrong), but no less awesome with a rifle. Amusingly, he actually sucks at close combat, meaning a Sniper is actually all he can do.
* FunnyForeigner: Not an actual example, but he plays the role shamelessly as a means of approaching Kaname and Kyoko while he's on bodyguard detail. "Hello, Japanese pretty girls!"
* ImprobableAimingSkills: Hits a good dozen sentry guns within a ''2 second window each'' before they fire. While on a hill at least a mile away. He frequently makes even bigger shots in the field, in one case crippling an AS with a man-portable anti-materiel rifle.
* LadykillerInLove: Though he might not be as successful a ladykiller as he might think. In the later novels, however, he manages to [[spoiler: get past the SlapSlapKiss stage with Mao, and it's obvious they're in love with each other]].
* LastBreathBullet: [[spoiler: In the novel ''Approaching Nick of Time''.]]
* LovableSexManiac: You may be noticing a theme.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Intentionally made mediocre shots so that he wouldn't stand out in the training camp Mao was touring, but when push came to shove, he showed he's anything ''but'' a novice with a rifle.
* PhenotypeStereotype: Blond-haired, blue-eyed and born in Germany. But he was actually raised in Japan, where his father worked as a reporter. Cue jokes about him being more Japanese than Sousuke -- at least from a cultural perspective.
* WouldntHitAGirl: Not even just hitting - just simply ''making a girl cry''. To the point where he hits Sousuke and chews him out for making Kaname sad. "People like you grow up to be those violent, abusive husbands!" indeed.

[[folder:Melissa Mao]]
!! Sergeant Major/Second Lieutenant Melissa Mao
[[quoteright:240:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/melissa_mao.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Creator/MichikoNeya (JP), Creator/AllisonKeith (EN)

Serving as the SRT's second-in-command next to Gail [=McAllen=], she serves in Mithril under the call sign Uruz-2. Her expertise in electronic warfare is valued by the Pacific Battle Group Tuatha de Danaan. Her rank was Sergeant Major, but by the novel Dancing Very Merry Christmas she has been promoted to Second Lieutenant, making her a commissioned officer. She is 25 years old.
--------
* ActionGirl: Even outside the AS, she is quite the capable fighter.
* BadassNormal: Like Kurz, she has no special training or abilities, but nonetheless can fight off enemies in advanced AS with no problem and has enough strength to terrify ''Sousuke'' of all people.
* BestBeerEver: As per her being a Misato expy, this is to be expected. It's even done shot for shot.
* BiTheWay: In the manga she gets very intimate with Tessa at times, [[spoiler: but also apparently got married ''and divorced'' with Kurz ''3 times'']].
* BoisterousBruiser: Very energetic and trigger happy.
* BoobsOfSteel: Easily one of the biggest chests in the cast, as well as the strongest female in the cast.
* BoyishShortHair: Goes along with the territory, but also likely a combat requirement since Kaname and Tessa (both of which are non-combatants) get caught with their long hair. The one time she is seen with long hair, it's a wig (and is actually enough of a difference to even conceal her identity from ''the viewer'').
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Insults her superiors (her ''captain'' no less), uses million dollar equipment for a Tango demonstration. Frequently gets drunk, sometimes on the job, and badmouths everyone within earshot when she feels like it. Nonetheless, she is one of the most skilled pilots on the Danaan.
* CoolBigSis: She even refers to this trope by ''name''. Kurz also calls her "Big Sis."
* DrillSergeantNasty: Sousuke's stint as one in ''Fumoffu'' comes courtesy of a manual given to him by Mao, who got it from Gunnery Sergeant Hartmann.
* EvilLaugh: When she gets riled up, her laugh is downright maniacal. Likewise everyone around her knows this is a sign to keep far away from her.
-->'''Sousuke''': I find her happiness quite disturbing.
* HardDrinkingPartyGirl: Apparently downs a whole case of beer and several packs of cigarettes while waiting for Tessa to get back to the room. She has no problem drinking pint after pint at the local bar either.
* TheLadette: It's notable that the only time we ever see her in anything remotely feminine, she's undercover.
* MilitaryBrat: Her father was in the Air Force.
* RunawayBride: She ditched her own ArrangedMarriage to join the Marines, showing up at the recruitment office still wearing her wedding gown.
* SemperFi: Mao enlisted in the Marines on her wedding day, but was dishonorably discharged sometime before the story begins. It's hinted that she was a DI at Parris Island.
* SheCleansUpNicely: An even better example than Kaname, who is generally agreed to be quite pretty even when she's not dressed up. Mao, on the other hand, rarely appears in anything but fatigues or a flightsuit, making the slinky dress she dons for her undercover operation in ''The Second Raid'' all the more impressive.

!! Lieutenant Commander Andrei Sergeivich Kalinin

->Voiced by: Creator/AkioOhtsuka (JP), Creator/MikeKleinhenz (seasons 1 and 2, Fumoffu), Creator/KentWilliams (season 3) (EN)

Sagara's commanding officer and one of Tessa's military strategists with the rank of Lieutenant Commander, fulfilling the role of Operations Director. He is also the foster father of Sagara.
------
* TheAtoner: He always felt guilty that he couldn't save Sousuke's beautiful mother. And he also feels responsible for letting Sousuke get taken in by the KGB (who raised him to be a StrawNihilist assassin). As a result, he desperately wants to humanize Sousuke. [[spoiler:Subverted in the last couple of novels, where he betrays Mithril, defects to Amalgam, and personally orders his men to kill Sousuke. It's stated directly by the author that it's not some double-agent act, either. He truly wants the same thing as Leonard.]]
* CoolOldGuy: Very much so.[[spoiler: Until his FaceHeelTurn that is.]]
* FaceHeelTurn: [[spoiler:After Amalgam destroys Mithril's [=HQs=], he aligns himself with Leonard.]]
* GrandpaWhatMassiveHotnessYouHave: How does he keep up that muscled physique exactly?
* LethalChef: His Borscht (made with miso paste and cocoa powder) almost killed Tessa. And it's horrific enough that [[LethalChef Sousuke]] flees in terror. This is apparently because it's something his wife used to make him when he returned home from a long mission, as a punishment. However, he never realized this, and thought it was delicious
* MajorlyAwesome: Holds the rank of ''Shousa'', which can be translated as Major (Army) or Lieutenant Commander (Navy). Given that he's the ground force commander, Major would be more appropriate.
* MortalWoundReveal: [[spoiler:Turns out he had been fatally injured by shrapnel, and was hiding it from Sagara during their duel]].
* ParentalSubstitute: He ended up becoming Sousuke's adopted father and legal guardian.
* RealMenWearPink: He enjoys cooking, and wears a frilly, pink apron while doing it. He's nevertheless very badass, even while doing that.

[[folder:Richard Mardukas]]

->Voiced by: Creator/TomomichiNishimura (JP), Andy [=McAvin=] (seasons 1 and 2, Fumoffu), Mark Stoddard (season 3) (EN)

Holding the rank of Commander, Mardukas serves as the second of Tessa's strategists and Executive Officer, responsible for keeping the ship running smoothly. Has a professional working relationship with Kalinin and defers to his judgment on ground combat. Very stuffy and very British.
------
* TheCaptain: Mentioned to have been one in his backstory, which explains his assignment as Tessa's XO, as he's the best person to advise her... not that she needs it.
* CharacterTic: Whenever [[LetsGetDangerous he's ready to kick ass]], he has a habit of wearing his hat backward. He did this even back when he was in the navy and it was impractical to do so. [[spoiler: It's why he has his cap. It was a gift from Tessa's father to make doing it much easier]].
* TheChessmaster: In the Dancing Merry Christmas arc, while his enemies are advancing upon him with very fast and powerful submarines, and his crew are panicking at the overwhelming force, Mardukas calmly maneuvers his ship to wipe out his enemies, ''before the bad guys even make their first move''. As he puts it:
--> "[[BadassBoast The enemy should have realized that this battle was the equivalent of three soldiers trying to take down a fortress.]]"
* CommanderContrarian:
** Mostly averted, with one exception - when Tessa orders the Arbalest to be sent to Sousuke in Hong Kong, during TSR, Mardukas ''strongly'' disagrees. [[spoiler: Tessa convinces him to believe in her, and he backs down.]]
** His backstory reveals that Mardukas was a [[ReasonableAuthorityFigure reasonable]] Commander Contrarian, but it also got him into trouble; late in his career with the Royal Navy, he submitted a brutally honest report that ran contrary to and embarrassed his superiors, causing him to be demoted and relieved of his command; this ultimately accumulates to his eventually joining of Mithril.
* TheGlassesComeOff: An unusual variation. He keeps his glasses on, but everyone around him knows you have to watch out for his hat. The moment he wears it backward, [[LetsGetDangerous he's about to kick ASS.]]
* LetsGetDangerous: Has an epic moment in ''Dancing Very Merry Christmas.'' A team of Amalgan underwater fighters/AS/submarines attack the TDD-1 while Tessa is on an adjacent ship. Mardukas steps up to bat and owns them ''hard''.
** In general, [[CharacterTic when he wears his hat backwards]], his kiddy gloves come off.
* NiceHat: A snazzy baseball cap. [[spoiler: It was a gift from Tessa's father.]]
* NervesOfSteel: When the Tuatha is ambushed by three high-speed submarines with even faster torpedoes, the crew start panicking, especially because Tessa is off the boat at the moment. Mardukas just [[LetsGetDangerous wears his hat backwards]] and proceeds to calmly give orders.
* PapaWolf: Since Tessa's parents died, he's become more or less her father figure. Justified, considering he was a close friend of her parents.... which is why you should '''''never''''' think of laying a finger on her pretty little head or else he will stuff you inside a '''''GODDAMN''''' torpedo tube and fire you into the deep [[spoiler: Where the freezing water will freeze you, the water pressure will crush you, and if that doesn't work, you'll drown before you can surface. And maybe he'll throw in a torpedo for good measure]]. Sousuke was reasonably terrified of this, in Fumoffu.
* RedBaron: Known to the submarine communities of the US and UK as The Duke of Undersea Warfare.
* TrainingFromHell: Mardukas is both a graduate ''and'' instructor of [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast Perisher]], the Royal Navy's submarine equivalent to TOPGUN... but ''harder''.
* XanatosSpeedChess: How he takes down the Amalgam naval taskforce. Also something of a military maverick, in that none of his tactics are convential tactics, but he points out that their foe isn't conventional.

->Voiced by: Rikiya Koyama (JP), James Reed Faulkner (EN)

The new commander of the Western Pacific Battle Group's Special Reaction Team after [=McAllen=] was assassinated during the attempted hijacking of TDD-1. He's African-Canadian and good buddies with [=McAllen=].
----
* AllThereInTheManual: The novels mentions that he practices Islam, which is why he refuses to drink alcohol at the Merida bar.
** Further implied in the OVA, with him violently hunting down Kurz over the latter splicing a clip of pigs kissing into one of his prized DVDs as a prank.
* ButNotTooForeign: He's African-Canadian.
* ElitesAreMoreGlamorous: Belfangan's a veteran of the Canadian Army's Joint Task Force Two, an elite special forces unit.
* RealMenWearPink: He enjoys Disney movies and anime and confides to Tessa that he worries about someone in the force finding out about it and teasing him for that. A few moments later, he goes [[BerserkButton completely ballistic]] when he finds out Kurz taped over some of his collection with porn.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: His name is sometimes spelt as '''Grouseaux''', which highly suggests that he's from Quebec.
* TricksterMentor: When he shows up at Merida, he engages with Sousuke in a fight in an Arm Slave by mocking the memory of [=McAllen=] so that he can use the Arbalest more effectively by pointing out to him that the Arbalest is a part of him and he should use it without relying on the Lambda Driver a lot. He mentions that it's the only way that he can learn and he doesn't want him to be like him when he joined the Canadian Army at a young age. It was also secretly approved by Tessa after Sousuke was transferred back to Merida. His talk with Melissa also doubles as foreshadowing.
-->'''Belfangan''': I've been thinking about Sagara. Just like I was at that age, always the badass. Blustering his way through shit with the best of intentions. But he needs to step back and see things for what they are rather than what he thinks they are.
-->'''Melissa''': You think... he'll ever do that?
-->'''Belfangan''': Who knows? But if he doesn't, we'll lose him. He'll be... either a dead man or a turncoat.
-->'''Melissa''': Sousuke?
-->'''Belfangan''': Where do you think the guys we're fighting now came from? Malice builds up slowly. You start lying to yourself. Then you resent the people around you and finally, you just switch off the whole world. It's a slow process. Just like you never see the hour hand of a clock moving. It sneaks up on you.

!!Gauron
[[quoteright:240:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gauron_profile.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Masahiko Tanaka (JP), Mike [=MacRae=] (EN)

While little is known about Gauron at the present, he is Sousuke's strongest and most formidable enemy throughout the TV series. He's a terrorist of the highest caliber sponsored by a mysterious organization, but little is known about Gauron's benefactors other than the fact that they appear to be more formidable and possess greater resources than even the notorious Soviet KGB. Believed to be Japanese, or at least of Asian ethnicity, Gauron and Sousuke have a long and bloodstained history together. Sousuke left a big scar on Gauron's forehead when he and then Soviet Spetsnaz commander Major Kalinin ambushed Gauron in a sniper attack back in Sousuke's Afghan guerrilla days. This is but one of many battle scars Sousuke inflicts upon this vicious man slayer over the course of the series.
-------
%%* AbusiveParents: What he is to the twins Yu Fan and Yu Lan.
* AlmightyJanitor: Mentioned in the novels, where Harris, another member of Amalgam, explains that with Gauron's capabilities, he could have ''easily'' become commander. However, due to Gauron's {{Jerkass}}ery, most of the other members had a hard time getting along with him, and adding to that, he had incurable cancer. As a result, they decided instead to give the position to Gates, who was very much inferior.
* AnguishedDeclarationOfLove: "I LOVE YOU [[spoiler: KASHIM]]!!!"
* AnimalMotifs:
** His is a lion, according to Kalinin. Languid and bored at first sight, he shows his ferocity the next second. Contrasts with Sousuke's tiger motif.
** A more symbolic and significant one might be a dragon, from his name "Gauron" (which means "nine dragons" in Chinese). And considering that Sousuke is a ''tiger'', as well as that the dragon and tiger are natural born enemies (think ''LightNovel/ToraDora'')... well, just look at the TigerVersusDragon trope page. It describes their relationship perfectly. ("This refers to two spirits so wildly different and yet wildly similar at the same time, intricately linked together in destiny.")
%%* AnythingThatMoves
%%* ArchEnemy: Sousuke's, apparently self-appointed.
* AxCrazy: As AxCrazy as they come. Pretty much ''everyone'' knows that he gets off on killing people. Including his associates and partners, who actually get ''annoyed'' at how he keeps killing people he shouldn't kill.
%%* TheBerserker
* BigOlEyebrows: Pretty much has the biggest eyebrows out of every character in the series.
%%* BloodKnight
* CatchPhrase: He loves to drawl "Baakaaa" (Idiot) to his would-be victims.
* ChildSoldier: It's revealed that he was a soldier at ''least'' since he was 12, in the Khmer Rouge. Probably even younger than that.
%%* ChronicBackstabbingDisorder
* DeathSeeker: Which is revealed to stem from the fact that he has incurable cancer, and wants to get as much pleasure from death as he can. Extra {{Irony}} points when, the more he ''tries'' to be suicidal, the longer he seems to survive.
%%* DepravedHomosexual
* DiscOneFinalBoss: He's the series' most reoccurring and dangerous villain until he is [[spoiler:crippled at the end of the first season]] but remains a threat by delegating tasks to Xia Yu Lan and Xia Yu Fan. Still, Sousuke eventually manages to catch up to him and finally [[spoiler:kill him off but afterwards the focus of the plot changes and Leonard Testarossa steps up as the BigBad.]]
* EvilHasABadSenseOfHumor: His comes in the form of BlackComedy.
%%* EvilLaugh
* EvilSoundsDeep: He has a very deep voice fit for a villain.
* FauxAffablyEvil: It really depends on if you appreciate his BlackComedy or not. However, by the time of ''The Second Raid'', it's pretty clear that he is a heartless sociopath with no redeeming personal characteristics whatsoever.
* FirstNameBasis: It doesn't matter who, he calls ''everyone'' by their most familiar name possible. And pretty much everyone is shown to be disturbed, creeped out, or annoyed by it. He calls Kaname "Kana-chan" (something only Kyoko, her best friend, calls her), he calls Dunnigan by the name "John" (which causes Dunnigan to get pissed off, only for Gauron to ''threaten Dunnigan with castration'' if Dunnigan doesn't let him call him that), calls Kalinin by the name "Ivan" (something no one else calls him)... and then there's the pet names he has for poor Sousuke.
* ForTheEvulz: His main reason for doing most things, really. Including betraying and killing his employers for no real reason.
* GoOutWithASmile: He had a ''very'' [[SlasherSmile happy smile]] on when he died.
* GrandpaWhatMassiveHotnessYouHave: He's really muscular and well built for his age, as is made ''really'' [[ShirtlessScene obvious]].
* GreenEyedMonster: Lord help anyone else that gets too close to Sousuke.
%%* TheHedonist
* HeyYou: Being the rude jerkass he is, he has a habit of doing this to everyone. See also FirstNameBasis.
* ILoveTheDead: Something he shares in common with Gates.
* InLoveWithYourCarnage: This is the reason that this guy is so utterly obsessed with Sousuke -- when he first met him at 12 years old, Gauron saw something in the boy's eyes; an ice-blue will to kill, without sin or care. He spends much of the series trying to "reawaken" this side of him.
%%* InterplayOfSexAndViolence
%%* {{Irony}}: Everything about the man is filled with it.
* ISurrenderSuckers: What he pulls off on Mithril as part of his plan to [[spoiler: take over the Tuatha De Dannan]].
* KnifeNut: It's revealed that Gauron's WeaponOfChoice and specialty is with knives.
* KnightOfCerebus: Whenever he's around, the joking ''stops.''
%%* LackOfEmpathy
* LargeHam: The guy manages to make ''everything'' he does hammy. Especially by including [[EvilLaugh Evil Laughter]] after saying anything. In the novels, he even ''literally'' eats ham while dramatically giving orders to the AI on the Tuatha de Dannan.
* LawOfChromaticSuperiority: Gauron's first two Codarl models were silver and were portrayed as far more dangerous than the usual dull grey AS. His final one was a blood red "Venom" model, which was portrayed as still more deadly than the basic Codarl.
* LoveAtFirstSight: Apparently what he felt when [[PaedoHunt he first saw 12-year-old Sousuke]]. He was immediately so smitten with Sousuke that he literally took a double look, immediately parked his jeep, and attempted to [[WifeHusbandry get Sousuke to come with him]]. Four years after being rebuffed and never seeing Sousuke again, he actually manages to recognize Sousuke as soon as he gets a clear view of his face. Scary.
* LoveHurts: Gauron angrily tells Sousuke that, ever since the boy fell in love, he's become weaker, more messed up, and has a bunch of conflicting feelings.
* ALoveToDismember: His infamous (and thankfully unfulfilled) desire to [[spoiler: rape Sousuke's corpse after killing him]].
* ManipulativeBastard: He certainly managed to manipulate the two twins he [[WifeHusbandry took in and raised]] into falling in love with him and doing anything he bids them to. And then he managed to manipulate and piss Sousuke off to the point where he finally managed to get [[spoiler: the death he always wanted, killed by the Assassin Saint he always loved]].
%%* MindRape: What he loves to do to ''all'' of his intended victims.
* MurderTheHypotenuse: His unreasonable anger and and jealous grudge against Kaname is explained in ''TSR'', where it's completely and seriously explained that he wants her dead because Sousuke likes her. Yep, his main reason for ordering [[spoiler: the two twins he raised to go to their deaths was because he wanted the girl who managed to "tame" his beautiful Assassin Saint to die, so Sousuke will revert back to his emotionless, violent self]].
%%* NightmareFetishist
* NoOneCouldSurviveThat: Which he continues to pull off around maybe... 5-6 times in the series. Each incident getting increasingly ridiculous as to how he could possibly survive.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: Directly {{Lampshaded}} in the novels, where numerous victims of his note his smug way of breaching on people's personal space.
%%* NoSocialSkills
%%* OneManArmy
* PaedoHunt: Gauron's been after Sousuke ever since the latter was ''twelve years old''. And the things he wants to do to the boy are very, very creepy.
%%* PermaStubble
* PickOnSomeoneYourOwnSize: He takes this to illogical extremes with Sousuke. ''What'' exactly did the boy do to deserve his [[StalkerWithACrush obsessive stalking]] and persistent attempts to make his life miserable?
%%* PsychoForHire
* PsychoticSmirk: His default expression. Only changed when he's having his SlasherSmile.
%%* SlasherSmile
%%* SmugSnake
* SmugSuper: Despite possessing hubris in abundance, he truly is an unstoppable force on the battlefield. With the exception of Sousuke Sagara, none of the soldiers of Mithril can hold a candle to his abilities as an Arm Slave pilot. Perhaps most significantly, he has consistently demonstrated an almost supernatural ability to cheat certain death right up until the moment he drove Sousuke to help him commit suicide.
%%* TheSociopath
* StalkerWithACrush: If there's ''anyone'' that acts like one in this series, it's him. ''Especially'' toward Sousuke, who would much prefer he leave him the hell alone.
* TakingYouWithMe: What he tries to do with Sousuke at the end of season 1. He also takes the opportunity to dramatically [[AnguishedDeclarationOfLove confess his love for Sousuke]], which [[MomentKiller sort of falls flat]] when Sousuke blasts him off off the ship so only Gauron's AS explodes.
* WouldHitAGirl: Shouldn't be a surprise, but it's there. During the hijacking, he would have killed the high school's teacher if Sousuke hadn't distracted him - then when he takes over the Tuatha De Danann (and after Tessa let Kaname escape), he does not hesitate to viciously yank on Tessa's ponytail, or use her head as a foot-rest.
* {{Yandere}}: Way over the "psychotically crazy" side. However, the fact that he managed to raise twins and succeed WifeHusbandry means ''something''.

[[folder:Mr. Gates]]
!!Mr. Gates
[[quoteright:240:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gates_fmp.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Creator/HochuOtsuka (JP), Creator/JohnSwasey (EN)

An Amalgam agent, and complete ''nutjob'', Gates takes over as their primary field leader after Gauron's apparent death. Willing to murder people at the drop of a pin, Gates stands out as quite possibly the craziest character in the entire show, and concocts a series of increasingly over the top plans to eliminate Mithril.
------
* AdaptationalVillainy: He was already a mean son of a bitch in the novels, where he shows the beheaded head of Yu Fan's sister to her, but in the anime adaptation he doesn't lose a single minute to prove himself as someone as evil and disgusting as Gauron.
* AscendedExtra: Originally Gates is only known as "Mr Kalium" in the light novels and was just a mere Venom pilot who went after a rogue Xia Yu Fan, But the anime producers decided to give him more screentime, ascending to the BigBadWannabe of the season.
* AssholeVictim: A terrible person who has the terrible luck to ran into a newly-invigorated Sousuke.
* AxCrazy: By simply saying that this guy is CRAZIER than Gauron, you get a standpoint. There's so many laders of wrong with this guy's head and haircut.
* BadBoss: Killing a bunch of his subordinates for no apparent reason certainly isn't a sign of a good boss.
* BestialityIsDepraved: Yeah, apart from doing god knows what to the Xia Yu Twins, he likes to spend his time watching videos of little animals such as kittens and squirrels, alone, in the dark,oh and with a tissue box in his hand and naked.
* BigBadWannabe: He's set up as Gauron's replacement for the villain in ''The Second Raid'' and the series spends many episodes building up suspense for the inevitable showdown between he and Sousuke. In the final episode, he faces Sousuke along with a handful of {{Mooks}} and [[spoiler:are helpless to stand up against the Lambda Driver and are all killed within minutes]].
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Between his over the top hairstyle, and his even more over the top personality, you would tell this guy belongs in a comedy show and not in the battlefield. But that entertaining charm rarely eclipses a deadly hability for combat along with a cruelty to match
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: A dark version of this trope. For crying out loud, he randomly starts singing the Ave Maria as his men commit wholesale slaughter.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: An obvious lunatic, yet a dangerous pilot.
* CurbStompBattle: His final battle with Sousuke, which sees him absolutely destroyed by the younger pilot.
* FauxAffablyEvil: He's highly entertaining to watch, and can fake nice, though only for a minute or two.
* DiabolusExNihilo: As he was created out of an unnamed enemy pilot of the light novels, he had no backstory nor interactions with any of the heroes in the story.
* ILoveTheDead: Talks at one point about the many, many uses for a corpse, making it very clear what he's talking about.
* LackOfEmpathy: Gates treats other people as playthings or pawns and disposes of them just as quickly.
* LargeHam: He's made of ham. Singing "Ave Maria" while his underlings mass slaughter for one thing. And those wild gestures he makes while yelling out nonsensical gibberish and playacting for another.
-->"Gates has broken through! He's no mere racer; his moves are ''pure art''! The machines are rounding the final corner! The audience is going wild!! Will he make it?! CAN HE MAKE IT?!"
* LaughablyEvil: It's hard to not laugh at how utterly random his actions are.
* LawOfChromaticSuperiority: Pilots a red "Venom" Codarl, the same way Gauron did.
* Leitmotif: A theme called [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kEC2eS4hTs Seppaku]] plays whenever he is around, and it is as strenduous as him.
* MummiesAtTheDinnerTable: He likes to do this with people's corpses.
* NightmareFace: Gates doesn't hide his excitment , and usually shows it either with this or with a big, warming SlasherSmile.
* ObiWanMoment: Goes from a VillainousBreakdown to this before the Arbalest's lambda driver disintegrates him completely.
* PsychoForHire: Clearly signed up with Amalgam for the killing.
* PsychopathicManchild: His over-emotional nature combined with the sheer crazy of some of his antics makes him seem something like an overexcited child - at least until you realize just what he's doing.
* StupidEvil: His constant thirst for killing and enormous ego tends to play against him.
* TheSociopath: Exaggerated. He hits every point on the Psychopathy Checklist and then some.
* TalkativeLoon: Gates never, ''ever'' shuts up.
* ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill: Sousuke uses his lambda driver to generate a waveforce just behind the guy whom Gates took hostage, and it completely obliterates him.
* TriggerHappy: He tends to pull the trigger before even thinking. For example, killing the man who was ''supposed'' to pay them for their goods, before even thinking of a way to get the money from him. And then immediately killing his own soldier when the soldier pointed this out.
* WhatTheHellAreYou?: With his encounter at Nanjing, Gates defeated Sousuke with sheer lambda driver force,[[spoiler: so it's understandable that he has a FreakOut when he sees him again, this time completely owning him.]]
* WithGreatPowerComesGreatInsanity: Slightly averted; If we check up on his behaviour, we'll see two symptoms specified by Kalinin as to be rooted with the use of the drug firstly used by the A-21 terrorists (Sudden memory loss and unpredictalbe outbursts of rage). His [[InsaneEqualsViolent completely crazed love with carnage and destruction]],[[BestialityIsDepraved obscure sexual tastes]] and [[LargeHam acting like the world is his own personal shiny stage]] though? That's totally his.

[[quoteright:240:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/leonard_testarossa.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Creator/DaisukeNamikawa (JP), Creator/BlakeShepard (EN)

A child prodigy and Whispered like his younger sister, he is known as "Mr. Silver" in the executive circle of the Amalgam organization. Is extremely infatuated with Kaname.
------
* AbductionIsLove: [[spoiler: His mom sold him out by handing him over to armed men since heís the only one who knows of her affair with another Navy officer.]]
%%* AbusiveParents: [[spoiler:Well, his mother at least.]]
* AlasPoorVillain:[[spoiler:After he's killed, Sousuke clearly isn't happy about his passing and laments not getting to talk with him more. Teletha is also seen putting flowers by his grave later.]]
%%* AloofBigBrother
%%* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: Never seems to work out concerning Kaname Chidori.
* TheArcher: [[spoiler:During the final battle at Merida Island, the Belial is equipped with a large bowgun that can apparently penetrate Lambda Driver forcefields (or else fires so quickly that it can hit before the forcefield fully manifests).]]
* BadassBookworm: He's regarded as the most intelligent of the Whispered and also [[spoiler:a capable AS pilot, who can take down Sousuke's Lambda Driver and has the skills to give him a run for his money as a shooter.]]
* BadassLongcoat: So badass, it even blocks throwing knives (and bullets) aimed to the head.
%%* BeautyIsBad
* BigBad: As soon as Leonard appears he begins manipulating Amalgam and antagonizing the heroes in the name of ushering in his idea of [[WellIntentionedExtremist world peace]].
* BerserkButton: [[spoiler:His mother's affair. During the final battle, Sousuke says "Tessa wanted me to remind you of 'what she did'"; just those words are enough to enrage Leonard, which makes him lose focus and leaves him open to Sousuke's attacks.]]
* {{Bishonen}}: To the point of being DudeLooksLikeALady.
%%* BrokenAce
%%* CainAndAbel: He's the Cain to [[spoiler:Tessa]]'s Abel.
%%* CampStraight
* TheCasanova: The novels state that he has had many sexual partners and is even heard having sex with a woman over the phone.
%%* TheChessmaster
* ChildProdigy: Grew up one, having solved one of Einstein's equations by the age of four.
* CrazyJealousGuy: He hates how Sousuke keeps getting in his way of not only his goal, but winning over Kaname. He can never seem to understand why anyone would ever accept Sousuke at all. Especially as a romantic interest no less.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Same as his sister, with gray eyes with silver hair.
%%* TheDandy
* DomesticAbuser: [[spoiler:Poor Kaname. He not only slaps her hard enough to hit the ground but to draw blood and even MindRape her too.]]
* DroppedABridgeOnHim: [[spoiler:After being defeated]] by Sousuke the two begin to talk to one-another, with Sousuke hoping he can break through to Leonard and Leonard buying time to [[spoiler:activate the island's self destruct button on his remote]]. Neither are successful, as [[spoiler:Leonard is shot dead by Kalinin, mid-sentence]]. Even Sousuke states he wishes they had more time to talk.
%%* DudeLooksLikeALady
* EnergyBow: The Belial's is equipped with some sort of bow that fire lambda-laced projectiles that can punch through anything.
* EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas: [[spoiler: Subverted, Leonard has nothing but hate towards his mother, she hid Tessa and then used him as a shield because he found out she was cheating on his dad.]]
%%* EvilGenius: To Amalgam, [[spoiler:at first.]]
%%* EvilOrphan
* FaceOfAnAngelMindOfADemon: A raging pretty boy, but also the most flat out dangerous leader of Amalgam.
* FauxAffablyEvil: At first he insisted he loved Kaname and wanted to win her affection honestly until [[spoiler:she accidentally shoots him, he drops the "gentlemanly act" and the very first thing he does when they meet again is to belt her across the face and tell her to shut up.]]
* ForcefulKiss: Did this to Kaname [[spoiler: twice! Almost three, but she was BrainwashedAndCrazy]].
* GrayEyes: Of the cold and superior type, as he is an aloof young man, who thinks he and he alone will be the one to set humanity on the right path.
* GreenEyedMonster: He not only hates Sousuke, but is very jealous of him. A LOT. It not only involves Kaname, but in general too. He hates how people are easily attracted by Sousuke, who can be aloof, stoic, and awkward, yet his loved ones are much more forgiving towards him. Even though he's killed over hundreds of people. What pisses him off more than anything, is that he believes that he and Sousuke are NotSoDifferent and so questions Kaname's repeatedly; why she would show such strong care and emotion for someone like him.
* TheGunslinger: [[spoiler:Surprised? So was [[TheStoic Sousuke]]]] and he's good enough to give him a run for his own money.
* IfICantHaveYou: He won't kill Kaname, but he's not above [[spoiler: slapping her, yelling at her, threatening Sousuke, letting her get BrainwashedAndCrazy, and resetting the world in where Sousuke won't remember her.]] So yeah, he gives off this vibe quite a bit.
* IHaveYouNowMyPretty: His two {{Forceful Kiss}}es and his CrazyJealousGuy[=/=]{{Yandere}} tendencies really get to Kaname.
%%* InsufferableGenius
%%* KickTheDog
%%* KnightTemplar
%%* LadyKillerInLove
* LackOfEmpathy: Is worst than Sousuke, but not on the same level as Gates or Gauron.
* LoveMakesYouEvil: He begins to lose it when Kaname [[spoiler: unintentionally shoots him in the head and overhears Kaname and Sousuke proclaiming their love to each other]]. He starts to get darker and more possessive towards Kaname.
%%* LongHairedPrettyBoy
%%* ManipulativeBastard: Just ask [[spoiler:Kaname]].
%%* MindRape: [[spoiler:Does this to Kaname to bend her to his will.]]
* MoralDissonance: He considers himself to be morally superior to Sousuke, because Sousuke has killed and he has not. This completely ignores the fact that while he has never killed anyone with his own hands, the number of people who have died or been put in mortal peril due to his actions far exceeds the number of people Sousuke has killed. How is ordering the death or deliberate endangerment of thousands better than killing hundreds in person?
* MurderIsTheBestSolution: It doesn't matter to him how many lives he must sacrifice, because once he reaches his goal, it will be corrected and it will be as if it never happened. Just as long as no one gets in his way.
* MurderTheHypotenuse: [[spoiler: Sousuke gets a double wammy. He's in Leonard's way of both his plans and winning Kaname over completely. So of course, Sousuke is at the top of Leonard's hit list for two very good reasons.]]
** [[spoiler:[[SetRightWhatOnceWentWrong In his mission to change history]], we see him with Kaname and Tessa on very good terms, but [[RetGone Sousuke is no where to be found]].]]
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: Leonard's personal AS is named the Belial, a name associated with TheDevil.
* {{Narcissist}}: Unlike Garon and Gates he is capable of caring about people, at least, in his own [[StalkingIsLove creepy way]] but he really, ''really'' likes himself and believes he's a brilliant revolutionary who can save the world.
%%* NobleDemon: At first, but then... see MoralDissonance.
%%* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: Poor Kaname.
* NotGoodWithRejection:
** He doesn't react well to Tessa siding with Sousuke and [[spoiler: even though she's well aware of what their mother did to him, she still choses to oppose him.]]
** At first he was somewhat laidback with Kaname dismissing his adavances on her. Didn't care that she slapped him or insulted him to his face. [[spoiler: Later on, however, he becomes so enraged with Kaname not giving in to him, and sort of "betraying" him by finally declaring to Sousuke that she loves him, that he slaps her hard enough to make her fall to the ground, speaks to her very rudely, and generally tortures her (more mentally than physically) in order to weaken her mind so that she won't be able to resist his plans of world-domination.]]
* ReallyGetsAround: Upon being first mentioned in the novels, he's referred to as a loose playboy who frequently sleeps around.
%%* RomanticFalseLead
* SetRightWhatOnceWentWrong: [[spoiler: He's aware that the Yamsk 11 incident changed the course of human history, and is convinced that the timeline in which ''FMP'' occurs is fundamentally wrong; thus his ultimate goal is to change history, which he believes will result in a more peaceful world.]]
%%* SissyVillain
* SmugSnake: A very high functioning and intelligent one. Nevertheless, Leonard firmly believes himself to be an absolutely brilliant young man and is prone to freak outs when he doesn't get his way. In one brutal moment he hits Kaname for wanting to be with Sosuke instead of him.
* StalkerWithACrush: On Kaname, who he introduces himself to by forcing a kiss on. Later he [[spoiler:kidnaps her and despite promising to make her fall for her in a fair, romantic fashion, devolves to screaming at her (even hitting her on one occasion and even going so far as to use mind control so that she will love him back.]]
%%* StalkingIsLove: He seriously seems to believe in these.
%%* SuperIntelligence: He's basically a whole new level of Whispered.
* TeenGenius: Even more so than Tessa, being the most referred to as the most intelligent of the Whispered. In particular, he excels in the creation of Arm Slaves.
* UnskilledButStrong: Leonard Testarossa isn't a very good pilot, but his Belial is equipped with the Lambda Driver, a device driven by the user's willpower that lets them perform feats that defy the laws of physics; since Leonard has tons of willpower, the Belial is practically invincible.
%%* VillainousCrush: On Kaname
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Despite causing massive death and destruction, [[spoiler:he honestly believes that his plan will make the world a better place.]]
%%* WhiteHairBlackHeart: Seeing how he is one of the main villains in the series.
* WickedCultured: He's definitely one of the more "refined," "cultured" characters in the series. And he's a hell of a lot more cultured than [[NoSocialSkills Sousuke]]. The thing is that, in this series, being more cultured does ''not'' necessarily make you [[ChickMagnet more attractive]] to the [[AllGirlsWantBadBoys opposite (or same) sex]].
%%* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds
* WouldHitAGirl: Not only to his enemies, but not even [[spoiler: Kaname is safe]] if he's angered well enough.
* {{Yandere}}: BIG TIME! By the time [[spoiler:Kaname and Sousuke confess to each other]], he's more than willing to do anything to get Kaname stay by his side and bend to his will. [[spoiler:He's willing to slap or MindRape her into submission. If that wasn't enough, by the time he meets his plans, only the whispered will be aware of their new world, he wants to still have Kaname all to himself. Both are shown to be ''very'' adept at martial arts and using knives, and they even have the accent when attempting to pronounce "Chidori" (instead using the Mandarin pronunciation, "Chinniu").
* AscendedExtra: In the novels, they had less scenes and smaller roles.

* DecoyDamsel: Yu Lan, who pretended to be one of the kidnapped hostages. She played the part pretty well, giving the Mithril agent who untied her an appreciative, admiring look. And the guy definitely looks very self satisfied that he had rescued a pretty DamselInDistress... until she [[SlashedThroat slits his throat]] immediately afterward.
* DullEyesOfUnhappiness: Mao notes the 'despair eyes' of Yu Lan as she's trying to hack her up with a machete.
* ElegantGothicLolita: The ''Sigma'' versions of the twins dress like this.
* EvilCounterpart: The twins serve as mirror images to Sousuke, being stoic teenage mercenaries who were adopted and cared for at a young age by a seasoned soldier. Unfortunately for the twins, the soldier ''they'' were raised by was Gauron. To further contrast with Sousuke, a ChasteHero uncomfortable with sexual situations or with being touched, the twins are shown to being willing to [[ShowSomeLeg use their sexuality]] as efficiently as machetes or firearms... [[OutWithABang and occasionally as a precursor TO those weapons]].
* GenderFlip: In the novels, they were actually ''male''. Whereas, in the anime they are female.
* HappinessInSlavery: Despite Gauron [[AbusiveParents caring little for their wellbeing]] (to the point where he only seems to care for using them as his pawns to lure Sousuke, sending them [[spoiler: to their deaths]] with no regard at all), their only happiness seems to come from being together with him. They're shown to [[spoiler: be so incredibly depressed when they find out he's dying]], and the only thing that gives them temporary comfort is that they are reunited with him.
* KnifeNut: Since Gauron's specialty is in knives, he apparently taught it to Yu Lan as well. She's shown to be very skillful and graceful wielding two large knives during her fight with Mao.
* LawOfChromaticSuperiority: Yu Fan pilots a black painted Shadow, and easily the most dangerous enemy on the field after Gates.
* OdangoHair: The hairstyle Yu Lan wears during a mission.
* RaceLift: In ''FMP Sigma'', they're changed from Chinese to an unspecified Caucasian ethnicity; however, the part where they use the Chinese pronunciation of Kaname's surname is retained.
* ShowSomeLeg: What they did to some of the Amalgam engineers, in order to distract them and carry out their Sensei's plan. Yu Fan kisses one of the men, while Yu Lan... [[GettingCrapPastTheRadar apparently jacks one of them off]].

!! Zaied
[[quoteright:124:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zaied_6067.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Creator/TakehitoKoyasu (JP), Creator/IllichGuardiola (EN)

A former friend of Sousuke's from their time as guerillas, Zaied served as something of a mentor to the younger ChildSoldier, and the two of them grew closer than brothers. While Sousuke and several others were away from camp, Zaied and the other guerillas were apparently killed in a raid by Gauron's mercenaries. Sousuke does encounter Zaied again though, during the "Wind Blows At Home" arc. Zaied is revealed to have survived, and is now on Gauron's payroll.
-----
* BigBrotherMentor: In the {{Backstory}}. He was the other child in Sosuke's guerilla group and acted as a mentor figure to him.
* BrokenPedestal: A mild version of this. Not that Sousuke really ''worshipped'' him or felt so eternally grateful to him... but Zaied ''was'' a respected memory to Sousuke of an honorable, dead comrade of the past. Needless to say, any feeling of goodwill on Sousuke's part completely vanishes when he realizes that Zaied decided to team up with Gauron and [[ItsPersonal kill a bunch of his current comrades]].
* ChildSoldier: Played frighteningly straight. Sousuke may be raised by the KGB and have NoSocialSkills but Zaied is too screwed up for words. His experiences have left him with the impression that winning is all there is to war, and that it doesn't matter what side you're on as long as you are victorious. He's been like this since he was at least twelve.
* TheDragon: Serves as Gauron's during the "Wind Blows At Home Arc". He's the latter's [[NumberTwo second-in-command]] and is the group's best pilot after him, is a {{Foil}} to TheHero, and has to be defeated by Sousuke before he can engage in combat with [[TheBigBad Gauron]].
* EmptyShell: Is there ''anything'' left inside Zaied? He generally comes off as a dead man walking.
* EvilCounterpart: Chillingly demonstrates what a few more years of warfare could have turned [[TheStoic Sousuke]] [[LackOfEmpathy into]]. Zaied plays the whole ChildSoldier thing very straight as opposed to Sousuke's more humorous portrayal, and takes every one of the tropes associated with Sousuke to their worst possible extreme. Sousuke's repressed, Zaied's emotionless. Sousuke's a CombatPragmatist, Zaied will do ''anything'' to win. Sousuke hates [[{{Archenemy}} Gauron]], Zaied seems to be using him as a reference to get into Amalgam. He even serves as Gauron's guide to the local area, directly mimicking Sousuke's role with the Mitrhil team.
* EvilFormerFriend: A one-time comrade and friend of Sosuke's.
* ForgottenFriendNewFoe: Not so much "forgotten" as "thought he was dead" but the results are about the same. Unlike many examples, they don't get over it either, or even really address their issues, but spend all three of Zaied's episodes trying to murder one another in the most brutal fashion possible.
* GatlingGood: Uses one as his Arm Slave's [[WeaponOfChoice primary weapon]].
* HiredGuns: Appears to have become a mercenary since the destruction of his old guerilla cell. The episode implies that he is seeking Gauron's assistance in applying for Amalgam membership.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Preemptively betrayed his guerilla cell in order to ensure his own survival, and didn't care if his only friend died in the process.
* LackOfEmpathy: It's pretty easy to see him as an emotionless sociopath. He doesn't bat an eye while committing atrocities or trying to kill his former friend, has no problem working for the man who murdered his comrades, and betrayed his all his friends just so he could "be on the winning side". Not to mention that he's emotionally a corpse, and willingly transports nuclear weapons in exchange for a paycheck.
* LastBreathBullet: Subverted. He unexpectedly still had enough life to be able to aim his gun at Sousuke and tell Sousuke that the person who has remaining ammunition is the winner. Sousuke is shown wincing and waiting for the impact, but instead Zaied falls back in his seat and opens fire into the air (whether this was involuntary or deliberate is up for debate).
* LawOfChromaticSuperiority: Pilots a blood-red Shadow Arm Slave, in comparison to the rest of his troops in their tans and greys. His Arm-Slave, the first Shadow to appear in series, is actually the precursor to Gauron's own similarly coloured Venom suit.
* MoreDakka: And lectures Sousuke on the need to keep additional bullets so that this tactic is workable.
* NeverFoundTheBody: Apparently, Sousuke didn't even bother really looking for his body before putting a flag marker grave in honor of him. So much for that...
* NotAGame: All that matters to Zaied is winning and he treats life as one big game.
* NotQuiteDead: And nearly manages to [[TakingYouWithMe take Sousuke with him]] before expiring.
%%* TheQuietOne
* ScarsAreForever: The scar under his left eye.
* ShellShockedVeteran: To the point where trauma has destroyed his ability to feel empathy.
* SociopathicSoldier: Of the shell-shocked variety. Zaied is broken and he'll break anyone else who comes his way.
* TheStoic: But unlike Sousuke, who's simply repressing his feelings, Zaied is legitimately dead inside. He has essentially no emotion to speak of.
* TemptingFate: He tells Gauron: "I've seen a lot of idiots die because of their stupid ideas of love and friendship. I'll never be like that." after Gauron (justifiably) makes sure that Zaied won't go easy on Sousuke. Next episode: Zaied ends up [[spoiler: sparing Sousuke, as he's unable to bring himself to shoot Sousuke with his remaining ammunition--though whether this was an act of mercy or the result of expiring before he could pull the trigger is up for debate.]]
* {{Turncoat}}: Betrayed his and Sousuke's guerilla cell to Gauron's mercenaries, because he was more concerned with winning than the cause he was fighting for.

His sense of pride cannot accept the fact that he was defeated by Sousuke, and he is constantly challenging him to rematches - which Sousuke usually avoids - intentionally or not. He also has a huge crush on Kaname.
------
* AnguishedDeclarationOfLove: He accidentally gives one to Sousuke (instead of Kaname) during a novel side story. Extra {{Irony}} points in that, for every single one of the other love confessions Sousuke had received, he had either [[CompletelyMissingThePoint misunderstood them]] or [[ObliviousToLove blown them off]]. But for ''this one'', Sousuke happened to vaguely understand the implications of it, and ended up getting weirded out by it, acting shocked that Tsubaki would be that kind of person.

[[index]]
* AccidentalPervert: It happens so many times that Kaname eventually ''knows'' that it's NotWhatItLooksLike.
[[Characters/FullMetalPanicMainCharacters Main Characters]]
* AceCustom: In the light novels, when Sousuke participates in underground AS battles, he pilots an Rk-91 Savage painted white and navy blue like the Arbalest, which he dubs "Crossbow". Subverted in that the Crossbow is '''under'''-powered; the Rk-91 is an older model which uses a diesel engine, which is less powerful than the gas turbine engines most other 2nd generation Arm Slaves have (to say nothing of the 3rd generation's Palladium reactors).
[[Characters/FullMetalPanicMithril Mithril]]
* AlliterativeName: '''S'''ousuke '''S'''agara.
* AlmightyJanitor:
* CantHoldHisLiquor:
* CatchPhrase:
* TheComicallySerious:
* CrazyPrepared:
* DrillSergeantNasty:
* HatesBeingTouched:
* NotSoStoic:
But after he sees a video from his classmates at
[[Characters/FullMetalPanicJindaiHigh Jindai High asking him to come back to school, he breaks down, sobbing that he wants to live so he can see his friends even if it's just one last time.
High]]
* ObfuscatingStupidity: He's shown to have done this when Mao interviewed him for a position on her squad. Suspicious of the mysterious organization sponsoring the training camp (actually Mithril), he deliberately underperformed during tests so as not to stand out, and insisted that his victory in an AS match (where he won overwhelmingly over another AS that was much superior in make) was entirely a fluke.
[[Characters/FullMetalPanicAmalgam Amalgam]]
* ObliviousToLove: At one point someone angrily ''yells'' at him about how much she loves him, and he never notices, and he should just admit he wants to be with Kaname...and there's evidence he ''still'' didn't get it.
[[Characters/FullMetalPanicIndependentVillains Independent Villains]]
* AnOddPlaceToSleep: Prefers to sleep ''underneath'' beds.
* OfficialCouple: [[spoiler: At the very end on the last chapter of the novel, with Kaname.]]
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: He's a consummate and serious professional, but when he sees Chidori with a former boyfriend, he starts mixing up his words and giving orders for an exfiltration to men who aren't there, obviously working from muscle memory, all the while speaking in his usual tone.
* PerpetualFrowner:
* ScrewTheRulesImBeautiful:
* SuspiciouslySpecificDenial: See BadLiar.
* TalkToTheFist: More of the form "Talk To The Bullet." Being the CombatPragmatist he is, he tends to do this when his enemies show an opening and are giving long speeches.
* TranquilFury: He always maintains his composure and cool, even when utterly pissed off.
* TeenGenius:

!! Kaname Chidori
[[quoteright:240:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chidori_kaname.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Creator/SatsukiYukino (JP), Creator/LuciChristian (EN)

* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan:
* GratuitousEnglish: "Don't worry, everything's gonna happy <3"

->Voiced by: Creator/{{Yukana}} (JP), Creator/HilaryHaag (EN)

!Mithril
[[folder:Kurz Weber]]
!! Sergeant Kurz Weber
[[quoteright:240:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kurzweber.jpg]]
->Voiced by: Creator/ShinichiroMiki (JP), Creator/VicMignogna (EN)

->Voiced by: Creator/MichikoNeya (JP), Creator/AllisonKeith (EN)

->Voiced by: Creator/AkioOhtsuka (JP), Creator/MikeKleinhenz (seasons 1 and 2, Fumoffu), Creator/KentWilliams (season 3) (EN)

* CommanderContrarian:

* ButNotTooForeign: He's African-Canadian.
-->'''Melissa''': Sousuke?

* AnimalMotifs:

->Voiced by: Creator/HochuOtsuka (JP), Creator/JohnSwasey (EN)

%%* InsufferableGenius
%%* KickTheDog

* StalkerWithACrush: On Kaname, who he introduces himself to by forcing a kiss on.

* DullEyesOfUnhappiness: Mao notes the 'despair eyes' of Yu Lan as she's trying to hack her up with a machete.

While Sousuke and several others were away from camp, Zaied and the other guerillas were apparently killed in a raid by Gauron's mercenaries.
* EvilFormerFriend: A one-time comrade and friend of Sosuke's.

The leader of Jindai High School's karate club, he is very skilled at karate. However, he is extremely nearsighted and can see clearly only when wearing his glasses, which leads to several comical incidents.
* ArrogantKungFuGuy: He's a more comical (and less evil) example; his extreme nearsightedness prevents him from being taken seriously. Think of [[Manga/RanmaOneHalf Mousse]] and you'll have an approximate dimension.
