* BigBadWannabe: He remains an active threat through the movie and the audience has come to believe that he's the mastermind, but they couldn't be more wrong. Hans truly upstages him in terms of evilness.

* GeneralRipper: Has a murderously judgmental hatred of magic and sorcery and those who practice them as "monsters", and will kill anyone he believes associated with them. The Duke even goes behind Prince Hans' back and orders his two men to assassinate Elsa once the search party reaches her ice palace.

* HateSink: In the film, he's consistently a jerk or an annoyance to everyone. He refuses to admit he overreacted to slipping on Elsa's ice, express anger when Arendelle's tradeable goods are being used and ordered his men to murder Elsa to stop the winter. Even though he shows some sadness for Anna's apparent death, he still uses this to prove Elsa is a monster. Even in non-film material, he still shown to dislike the sisters and at one point cheated in a race against Kristoff.

* DramaQueen: He's prone to overreacting to everything, like claiming Elsa tried to kill him, when all she did was generate some ice in his direction, what with her powers being out of control, something Hans calls him out on. At the very end of the film he even tries claiming he's suffering from trauma after everything he went through.
* EasilyForgiven: Downplayed in the spin-off book''Across the Sea''. It's clear Anna and Elsa are avoiding Weselton for his actions in the film, but they are willing to be friendlier to him during their stay in Vakretta. He also reappears during the 2017 annual comic's story "Sled Race", where it seems he's actually allowed to enter Arendelle's sled race and, until he's revealed to have cheated, Elsa isn't hostile to him. Unlike with Hans, it appears the sisters are at least willing to be more peaceful with the Duke.

* GiftedlyBad: He has an... ''interesting'' dance style.

* KickTheDog: He is willing to let freezing people die rather than give them blankets ("tradeable goods"). Hans really doesn't like him for that.

* MeaningfulName: Weselton is frequently mispronounced as 'Weaseltown' throughout the movie. Fittingly, the Duke is a rather weaselly and spineless character. Even Hans mockingly refers to him as a "weasel" behind his back.

* {{Foil}}: To Hans. While both faked being allies, The Duke is an old man who wants to take Arendelle's riches while Hans wants the throne. The Duke is rather blatant about how unpleasant he is while Hans is easier at hiding it. Both are forcibly taken out of Arendelle for their respective attacks on Elsa's life, but while Anna and Elsa are avoiding Hans, they have had several meeting with the Duke and seem more willing to make peace with him.

* EntitledBastard: Despite being a prejudicial {{Jerkass}} who tried to exploit Arendelle's wealth and have Elsa killed simply for being a magic user, when everything is resolved, he ''still'' genuinely expects an audience with Elsa to discuss business. Elsa makes sure he's sent home with nothing.

* TheDividual: They essentially act identical in their role, with their only real distinguishing trait being that one has a beard and the other doesn't.

* {{Hypercompetent Sidekick}}s: They're fierce, ruthless, and martially gifted. Compare that with their boss' lack of subtlety and giftedly bad dancing.
