* BigBadWannabe: He remains an active threat through the movie and the audience has come to believe that he's the main mastermind, but they couldn't be more wrong. The duke fancies himself as the mastermind, planning to exploit Arendelle for its riches but is unable to hide his intentions. When Elsa runs away and causes the eternal winter, he tries to restore the kingdom [[PragmaticVillainy for his own benefit]]. He sends [[ThoseTwoBadGuys his two bodyguards]] on Prince Han's rescue mission to kill Elsa, but Prince Hans truly upstages him in terms of evilness. saves her. Hans then proceeds to frame Elsa's accidental freezing Anna's heart as intentional murder, leaves Anna to die and sentences Elsa to death, so he can claim the throne for himself. This turns the Duke into a complete non-entity.

The General Ripper trope covers military figures who obsess over an enemy to the point of notable paranoia, seeing conspiracies worth attacking over without any evidence. The Duke isn't military, and although he's wrong about Elsa's intentions and general character, not realizing the Endless Winter is the result of Power Incontinence rather than malice, his accusations weren't without evidence.

* GeneralRipper: Has a murderously judgmental hatred of magic and sorcery and those who practice them as "monsters", and will kill anyone he believes associated with them. The Duke even goes behind Prince Hans' back and orders his two men to assassinate Elsa once the search party reaches her ice palace.

* HateSink: In the film, he's consistently a jerk or an annoyance to everyone. He refuses to admit he overreacted to slipping on Elsa's ice, express anger when Arendelle's tradeable goods are being used and ordered his men to murder Elsa to stop the winter. Even though he shows some sadness for Anna's apparent death, he still uses this to prove Elsa is a monster. Even in non-film material, he still shown to dislike the sisters and at one point cheated in a race against Kristoff.

* DramaQueen: He's prone to overreacting to everything, like claiming Elsa tried to kill him, when all she did was generate some ice in his direction, what with her powers being out of control, something Hans calls him out on. At the very end of the film he even tries claiming he's suffering from trauma after everything he went through.
* EasilyForgiven: Downplayed in the spin-off book''Across the Sea''. It's clear Anna and Elsa are avoiding Weselton for his actions in the film, but they are willing to be friendlier to him during their stay in Vakretta. He also reappears during the 2017 annual comic's story "Sled Race", where it seems he's actually allowed to enter Arendelle's sled race and, until he's revealed to have cheated, Elsa isn't hostile to him. Unlike with Hans, it appears the sisters are at least willing to be more peaceful with the Duke.

Kick The Dog covers when a villain commits a cruel act that does not benefit them and serves no reason other than for the story to establish them as evil. The duke had a motivation (greed) for complaining that Hans was giving things away.

* JerkassHasAPoint: He's [[FantasticRacism prejudicial]] and a [[HateSink definite jerk]], but when he worries, "If we don't do something soon, we'll all freeze to death," it's part of the ramping up of the emotions in anticipation of the climax. This reminds viewers of how high the stakes are, as Anna is on her deathbed and the villainous Hans is extinguishing all light and heat in the room and Elsa's fear is growing stronger and stronger. There ''were'' a ton of innocent civilians who were going to freeze or starve to death if summer never came back, especially with the frozen fjord and blizzard-wracked mountains making evacuation unlikely.
* KickTheDog: He is willing to let freezing people die rather than give them blankets ("tradeable goods"). Hans really doesn't like him for that.

* EasilyForgiven: Downplayed. When he appears in ''Across the Sea'', it's clear Anna and Elsa are avoiding Weselton for his actions in the film, but they are willing to be friendlier to him during their stay in Vakretta.

* EasilyForgiven: Downplayed. When he appears in ''Across the Sea'', it's clear Anna and Elsa are avoiding Weselton for his actions in the film, but they are willing to be friendlier to him during their stay in Vakretta.

[[folder:The Duke Of Weselton]]

[[caption-width-right:244: "If we don't do something soon, we'll all freeze to death!"]]

->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/AlanTudyk

A neighboring duke who wants to exploit Arendelle's riches and sees Elsa's powers as evil.
----
* AnalogyBackfire: "Like a chicken with the face of a monkey, I fly!"
* AristocratsAreEvil: His Machiavellian plans to dominate Arendelle's economy place him firmly in this trope. However, his ruthlessness pales in comparison to the thoroughly treacherous and cold-hearted Prince of the Southern Isles, Hans Westergaard.
* BaldOfEvil: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. He hides his baldness with a [[DodgyToupee wig that does its job poorly]].
* BerserkButton: Mispronouncing his home of Weselton as "Weaseltown".
-->'''Kai''': Your majesty, the duke of Weaseltown.\\
'''The Duke''': ''Weselton''!
* BigBadWannabe: He remains an active threat through the movie and the audience has come to believe that he's the mastermind, but they couldn't be more wrong. Hans truly upstages him in terms of evilness.
* BurnTheWitch: His attitude towards Elsa after her powers are revealed, including sending his men to kill her.
* CoolOldGuy: In the ballroom scene, it's evident that he ''thinks'' he's this, but he just comes off as a buffoon. Granted, he ''is'' pretty spry for a man his age.
* DecoyAntagonist: The Duke of Weselton and his guards are set up to be the primary villains from first sight, what with the "exploiting" quote and the guards trying to kill Elsa, but Hans, who seemed to be Anna's love interest, eventually takes over as the main antagonist.
* DidIJustSayThatOutLoud: Does this early on in the film about his intentions for the kingdom.
* DodgyToupee: Wears a wig to cover a bald spot. It flops up and down when he dances.
* EasilyForgiven: Downplayed. When he appears in ''Across the Sea'', it's clear Anna and Elsa are avoiding Weselton for his actions in the film, but they are willing to be friendlier to him during their stay in Vakretta.
* EntitledBastard: Despite being a prejudicial {{Jerkass}} who tried to exploit Arendelle's wealth and have Elsa killed simply for being a magic user, when everything is resolved, he ''still'' genuinely expects an audience with Elsa to discuss business. Elsa makes sure he's sent home with nothing.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: The book "Across the Sea'' reveals he has family in Vakretta, a kingdom Anna and Elsa are visiting. He seems willing to be on friendlier terms with them for this.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: The Duke may be a total {{Jerkass}}, but he was noticeably distraught when he was led to believe by [[ManipulativeBastard Hans]] that Elsa had killed Anna with an ice curse. He's also one of the first men to depart the room when Anna demands that Hans kiss her.
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: His proper name is never revealed.
* EvilOldFolks: He says that he wants to exploit the economy of Arendelle kingdom in his first appearance.
* EvilVsEvil: With Prince Hans but it's largely downplayed since both never really know about each others' plans until the end and any fighting they do is minor. However, it's clear they don't really like one another, and each attempt to back-stab one another.
* FantasticRacism: Given his reaction to Elsa's powers being revealed, it's not hard to guess that the Duke has a certain prejudice towards people with magic.
* FantasticSlurs: As a consequence of the above; he frequently refers to Elsa as a "monster".
* GiftedlyBad: He has an... ''interesting'' dance style.
* {{Greed}}: His main reason for visiting Arendelle is he wants to exploit their wealth.
* IcyBlueEyes: His eyes represent his jerkass and domineering personality.
* ItIsPronouncedTroPAY: The name of his town keeps getting mispronounced as ''Weasel''-ton. Gets turned into MaliciousMisnaming at the end when Kai informs him of the cut ties, makes a point of pronouncing it "Weasel Town". Even Hans snidely calls him a "weasel" behind his back in ''A Frozen Heart''.
* {{Jerkass}}: It's takes a special kind of jerk to turn on the Queen who has benefited your country for many years just because she has freaky ice powers.
* KickTheDog: He is willing to let freezing people die rather than give them blankets ("tradeable goods"). Hans really doesn't like him for that.
* LaserGuidedKarma: He came to Arendelle hoping to gain control of the kingdom's wealth and discover its secrets for himself, even to the point of trying to have Elsa killed. In the end, he's sent home and Elsa cuts off all trade with Weselton.
* LaughablyEvil: He causes a lot of trouble for Elsa, even sending his two bodyguards to shoot her, but then again, this is also the same guy who was afraid he could have died from slipping on ice.
* MeaningfulName: Weselton is frequently mispronounced as 'Weaseltown' throughout the movie. Fittingly, the Duke is a rather weaselly and spineless character. Even Hans mockingly refers to him as a "weasel" behind his back.
* NeverMyFault: Refuses to own up to any part he may have had in causing Elsa to flee and accidentally start the EndlessWinter. Even ''Hans'' calls him out on it.
* NoNameGiven: His real name is never brought up.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: The Duke seems to be a pretty laughably incompetent {{jerkass}} at worst, for the most part. Then he coldly orders his two henchmen to kill Elsa, and he says it in a tone that suggests he is dead-set on having Elsa killed.
* ObviouslyEvil: PlayedForLaughs in his EstablishingCharacterMoment, wherein he catches himself muttering about exploiting Arendelle's wealth.
--> ''[[LampshadeHanging Did I just say that out loud?]]''
* PetTheDog: In ''Across the Sea'', he's grateful to Elsa for using her power to help Vakretta's current heat wave and sees the sisters off as they leave.
* RedHerring: Virtually all promotional materials, including the voice acting leaks, have made him out to be the main villain of the story (and many people would assume seeing how Alan Tudyk previously had voiced King Candy in ''Disney/WreckItRalph'', who was the main villain of that movie), when it's actually the younger and less ObviouslyEvil Prince Hans.
* PragmaticVillainy: The only reason he wants to save the Kingdom in the first place is to make off with its riches and tradeable goods, which would cease to exist if the Kingdom was destroyed.
* RunningGag: His duchy's name is mispronounced as the embarrassingly phonetic "Weaseltown".
* TortureTechnician: ''A Frozen Heart'' has his bodyguards imply that he frequently tortures people for information.
* WouldHitAGirl: By proxy when he orders his bodyguards to assassinate Elsa.
* YouMonster: He shouts this to Elsa after she almost freezes him.

[[folder:The Duke Of Weselton's Bodyguards]]
[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dukes_bodyguards.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350: Erik (left), Francis (right).]]

The two bodyguards of the Duke. They serve as tertiary antagonists. Their main job is to protect the Duke at all costs.
----
* BadassBeard: The bearded one is a competent soldier, and so is the non-bearded one. It's more likely to tell them apart.
* BadassLongCoat: With RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver coloring they are dangerous.
* TheDividual: They essentially act identical in their role, with their only real distinguishing trait being that one has a beard and the other doesn't.
* HollywoodTactics: Averted on the small scale. After their initial shots on Elsa fail, they split up to surround her.
* {{Hypercompetent Sidekick}}s: They're fierce, ruthless, and martially gifted. Compare that with their boss' lack of subtlety and giftedly bad dancing.
* NoNameGiven: Their names are never revealed, though the Fan Nickname for the beardless one of the pair is "Fritz". The novelization gives them the names Erik and Francis.
* NumberTwo: They are the trusted and strong bodyguards to [[BigBadWannabe The Duke of Weselton]].
* PermaStubble: "Fritz" has a nine o' clock shadow.
* PerpetualFrowner: 99% of the time but that's just their look of concentration.
* RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver: Both wear red and black long coats.
* TheStoic: They're usually seen with straight faces.
* ThoseTwoBadGuys: They're always seen together and doing Weselton's dirty work.
* VillainousValour: Despite Elsa's vast powers, the two are willing to attack her armed with only crossbows.
* WeaponOfChoice: Both prefer a crossbow.
* WouldHitAGirl: Neither one shows any moral problem with trying to assassinate Elsa.
