* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: Zack is the archetypical StockShonenHero, with charisma, skills and a can-do attitude that make him likable as well as approachable. Unfortunately, he is also an example of one who isn't blessed by the world to face its evils and triumph, while his naive "country boy" roots and simple-minded understanding of the bigger world proved to be flaws that led him down the wrong path instead of complementing his innate virtues and incorruptibility. Even after breaking off from Shinra, Zack is prenatally dispositioned to not be exactly where he is needed and his skills and demeanor end up going towards other efforts than fighting for the fate of the world. Where your typical Shonen Hero is prone to have people rally around them, Zack's unusual chipper attitude and boundless optimism are so foreign to other people that his encouragements tend to be perceived the wrong way. Cloud gets the idea that a true SOLDIER is one who writes his own rules and damns the consequences, while Biggs continues the fight regardless of his abilities and support. In ''Rebirth'', it is shown that the reason he is alive is because the wheel of fate has been breached, giving him a new chance to become a better hero, albeit still a lesser one, by assisting Cloud and Aerith's efforts in bringing down Sephiroth and Jenova.

* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: As seen in Cloud's [[spoiler:flashback of the Nibelhiem incident shows that he gave Cloud and Tifa the exact wrong impression of a SOLDIER, a consummate, and detached company man who has unlimited confidence and strength, who isn't afraid to get in anyone's face for what he believes. For Cloud this means his major role model is the technical definition of a badass but the fact that he didn't see the worst of Zack's turmoil's with his own mentor figure means that he didn't pick up why he was often so brusque and daring. For Tifa, her picture of a man on a mission means that Cloud's facade of an aloof warrior who still holds a candle for Shinra works for her and between her already preconceived notions of him, she often doesn't see the real Cloud underneath the facade. Unsurprisingly, it is Aerith who can see past Cloud's exterior because she saw Zack's turmoil in ''Crisis Core'']].

He is also a staunch idealist who, at his worst, naively puts his faith in others even if there is good reason to believe that they're not as benevolent as they claim to be, or are hiding less savory details from him. This is shown throughout his time working for Shinra, who kept him loyal by steadily feeding him empty platitudes about honor and heroism while making him participate in their heinous warmongering activities, some of which sickened Zack, but not enough to make him turn against Shinra on his own terms. Even so, his innate compassion and ideals do prove to be his biggest strengths when stirred in the right direction, as they not only led to Cloud's survival after the Nibelheim tragedy, but also ultimately spurred Zack into following a much more substantial path to heroism after his survival in an alternate reality: by taking on the mountainous task of opposing Sephiroth himself across different worlds.

** He also becomes one to Biggs in ''Rebirth''. Due to their similar friendly and kind-hearted dispositions, the two manage to get along fast and strike a friendship, especially upon learning that both cheated death under mysterious and unknown circumstances. While Zack remains a staunch optimist and sees his situation as a new chance to start over and make better choices, Biggs becomes riddled with SurvivorGuilt and struggles to hold on to hope, often finding himself on the brink of despair and only pushed forward through Zack's encouragement. Zack decides to follow a different path and refuses to be held down by his past ties to Shinra, while Biggs finds himself unable to let go of Avalanche and feels compelled to continue their work, no matter what.

Zack decides to follow a different path and refuses to be held down by his past ties to Shinra, while Biggs finds himself unable to let go of Avalanche and feels compelled to continue their work, no matter what. Most notably, Zack's strong will to live and desire to make the most out of his second chance at life helps him to survive the events of ''Rebirth'' in one piece. In contrast, Biggs wastes too much time questioning the validity of his own survival and makes even worse mistakes than before, culminating in at least one variant of him from a branching timeline to die weak and pathetic, without even leaving an impact.

* NotQuiteTheRightThing: A major problem with Zack's strong sense of altruism is that his noble intentions never quite worked in practice while he was in SOLDIER. He loyally carried out Shinra's interests for years under the naive impression that he was living a hero's life and doing a lot of good for the world by trying to unite all under Shinra's banner, only to find out the worst way that he was nothing but an UnwittingPawn of a tyrannically corrupt and power-hungry corporate empire. It takes being betrayed by his employers and later escaping them that truly sets him down the path of genuine heroism.

* {{Foil}}: Zack embodies everything Cloud isn't, and a lot of what he wants to be. Zack has confidence and charm that makes everyone find him friendly and approachable, while Cloud has issues that often express themselves in ways that get him lonelier at the end. Notably, it doesn't take long for Biggs to consider him a friend while Cloud had issues to iron out after the Reactor 1 bombing. Zack isn't afraid to voice his thoughts but always able to take one for his loved ones, while Cloud often covers up his thoughts, especially if it would hurt them. This difference in approach is best shown when Marlene says Aerith has feelings for Cloud, which hurts Zack but he accepts it and tries to get them together. Meanwhile, Aerith barely has to peak Cloud's jealousy at the Gold Saucer and he becomes a stammering mess who has to change the subject to Shinra spies to avoid letting his jealousy show.

* TheIdealist: Zack's biggest strength, and also his biggest weakness, is his undying faith in the concept of "heroism" and "honor", believing that it's his duty to serve the world and its people for the greater good until his last breath. This has shaped his entire life, for better or for worse. Although a kind and compassionate person, he can also be naive, gullible, and easily exploitable by those with malicious intent as proven by his corporate superiors throughout ''Crisis Core''. Zack genuinely believed for most of his time in Shinra that he was on the side good and trusted in their stated ideals, even when sent out to do their dirty works, where he'd complain and angst about their more unethical actions, but didn't waver enough to seriously reconsider his stance with the company until shit hit the fan and he was forced to change course. Nonetheless, his faith in his ideals remains strong, and it continues to drive him to do better for the people he cares about, especially Cloud and Aerith.

* DamageIncreasingDebuff: Cait can learn the Moogle Knuckle, a two-hit punch that increases stagger % by 40. If he does it fast enough, he can get even higher percentages than Tifa in a shorter timeframe.

* TheGambler: Owing to his fortune-telling specialty and role as a mascot for the setting's biggest casino, many of Cait Sith's abilities involve games of luck like rolling a die or pulling slots. This can cause his battle performance to fluctuate based on your luck and skill at nudging the result with timed button presses.

* LogicalLatecomer: As the last full party member, he often questions the group on what sort of crazy idea that they are going after this time. Note that he is this despite being a robot cat mascot in his day job. Pointedly, he has this to say about something TheTeamNormal and all around nice girl Tifa does.

* SharedSignatureMove: He has his own variant of Cloud's Braver called the High Braver that he can use at Charge level 3. Downplayed in that his variant is very different, looking like a combination of Cloud's Aerial Assault and Braver while needing precise button presses to use properly.

* HidingBehindYourBangs: Vincent's bangs hide his more monstrous left eye. Symbolically, the trope both represents the many dark secrets Vincent is concealing as well as his introverted nature and his isolation from the world around him.

* AdaptationalNiceGuy: Though still a gruff SirSwearsALot, this version of Cid is much nicer and even treats Aerith with exceptional kindness due to being acquainted with her mother in the past. It does help that his storyline (and ''tense'' relationship with his future wife) are AdaptedOut, presumably saved for the final game.

It does help is worth keeping in mind that in this game, (outside of talking about Ifalna with Aerith) he is only interacting with the party on a professional level offering his storyline services as a transport pilot. His personal life (and ''tense'' relationship with his future wife) where his most unpleasant traits are AdaptedOut, on full display, have not been introduced yet, presumably saved for the final game.
