* FalseRapeAccusation: She tells Dexter that she would claim he attempted to rape her, which would justify killing him in a gas station when she confronted him. Dexter points out that the method that she would do it would only end up raising more questions, which causes her to back down.

* MuggingTheMonster: She finds out Dexter is investigating her and assumes he's a harmless lab geek in over his head, thinking she can kill him. Needless to say, she's ''very'' wrong.

* OffOnATechnicality: He gets acquitted of murder after his lawyer is able to produce footage from an arresting officer's bodycam, showing firstly that the officers who arrested him beat him for an excessive length of time, and secondly that he didn't confirm his acceptance of the MirandaWarning. This renders the only evidence the police had against him, namely a MotiveRant he gave while being interrogated by Deb, inadmissible.

* ButForMeItWasTuesday: Inverted. He makes a point to mention to never have killed a kid like the one in one of the photos Dexter shows him, Dexter points out the kid was still one of his victims because he ruined his life by killing his mother. (Not too mention when Dexter caught him he was about to brutally murder a kid for snitching.)

A serial killer who burns people alive before leaving behind the name 'Bobby' at the crime scene. His real name is [[spoiler:Joe Jensen]].

* CreatureOfHabit: Leaves the scrawled message , " It was Bobby" at all the scenes of his crimes.

* ProfessionalKiller: [[spoiler:Deb thinks he is a Fence when he turns out to be this]].
* PunchClockVillain: [[spoiler:Won't kill unless he is assigned a target. He even looks annoyed at Deb constantly trying to attack him and is forced to hit her.]]

* DiscOneFinalBoss: [[spoiler:Initially, the show is led to believe he is the brain surgeon, but is later shown not to be.]]

* ChekhovsGunman: [[spoiler:He is introduced as an unsuspecting janitor called in for questioning merely to ascertain whether he witnessed any suspicious behavior at the scene of the crime where he worked.]]

A computer analyst who is arrested as a likely suspect in the Ice Truck Killer case. He later turns out to be a fake, hungry for fame.

* FreudianExcuse: As a child, he was regularly abused by his mother but did not retaliate. Considering that he mutilated her corpse immediately following her death, it is apparent that his relationship with her was not beneficial to his psyche.

* AttemptedRape: After Paul leaves prison, he arrives to his house and tries to rape Rita, but she is able to fight back.

* AssholeVictim: To get him out of the picture without killing him, Dexter frames him for drug usage while on parole. Paul protests his innocence when he is sent back to prison, but no one buys it. He is eventually killed in a prison fight.

* SmallRoleBigImpact: While he only takes an active role in two episodes, he obviously has a huge part in the show's backstory, seeing how he was the one who murdered Dexter's mother. Additionally, while his shack in the Everglades initially just acts as a handy place to kill him, it ends up being an important location for the remainder of Season 2.

* MuggingTheMonster: Tries to intimidate Dexter. Doesn't work.

* DirtyCoward: As soon as [=LaGuerta=] shows him a severed head, he breaks down sobbing and admits that he's not really the murderer. On top of that, despite his claims that his StartOfDarkness was murdering his abusive mother, it turns out he was too cowardly to even do ''that'', meaning that the only crime he actually had the nerve to commit was social security fraud, by continuing to cash her pension checks after he died.
