* ChildOfTwoWorlds: He and Vex had a human mother and an elven father, with the former being a peasant and the latter nobility - meaning this trope is doubly so.
* HalfHumanHybrid: Half-elf. Comes with the territory.
* IShallTauntYou: Despite his serious nature, Vax seems to like this, such as telling a duergar about to be attacked by Grog "you are ''so'' fucked," or projecting the image of him flipping the bird into the mind of an enemy with psychic powers.
* KnifeNut: Vax's preferred weapon, he carries several of them which he swaps out to match the situation. He doesn't have any of the ax-crazy connotations sometimes carried by this, it's just the weapon of choice for his class.
* TheSneakyGuy: Being the party rogue, Vax is the one who sniffs out traps and scouts ahead. Also a StealthExpert, by necessity of class.

instead. While her brother tends to be more on the serious side, Vex is more laid-back and humorous. Together, the two make a skilled and stealthy team.

* ArcherArchetype: Wields a bow in battle.
* AnnoyingArrows: Averts this, as rangers are damn good at taking out foes with arrows. For example, that time Vex took out [[spoiler: half a throne room's worth of guards in one attack]]. This was played for laughs one time, though, when the twins both attacked the same guard. Overkill ensued, and the DM described the duergar, already killed by Vax, slumping down the wall only for two arrows to land in him.
* ChildOfTwoWorlds: Much like Vax, of course. The two lived with their mother in childhood, only to be brought to the elven court where their father lived. The reception they faced, both from him and other elves, was icy at best, leading them to seek their destiny elsewhere.
* HalfHumanHybrid: Of the HumanMomNonhumanDad type, though elves are quite close to humans anyway.
* StealthExpert: The twins are both pretty good at this.
* TrickArrow: She has a few of these, including an arrow that explodes in thorns and one that bursts into flame.

bear. Apparently gives excellent massages.

* BearsAreBadNews: ...for the team's enemies.
* FluffyTheTerrible: "Trinket" isn't the most intimidating name for a bear. Anyone attacked by him will likely forget that.

* BackFromTheDead: Well, it's a D&D world, this is a given. Died and resurrected before the show aired, and now determined not to fail again.
* GoodIsNotSoft: Demonstrated when she cuts the throat of a knocked-out duergar to make sure he can't sound the alarm later. The party is surprised by this change in character.
* PlatonicLifePartners: With Grog. The two are best friends. Also a platonic case of HugeGuyTinyGirl.
* TookALevelInBadass: To train herself up, she spent months at sea with pirates to get tougher. Since she managed to find her way into the caverns beneath the dwarven mines on her own, it seems to have worked.

to:

** CombatMedic: She does also wield a mace and a morningstar, meaning she can dish out some damage as well as heal it.

* AnAxeToGrind: Not that he really ''needs'' it, but he is the physical damage-dealer of the team.
* BadassInDistress: Twice now. The first time he got his intelligence drained by a monster, bringing it down to zero and leaving him in a vegetative state (thankfully Pike showed up in time to heal him). The second time, [[spoiler: he got kidnapped by the duergar queen while mind-controlled]].
* TheBerserker: Always prefaced by his request to the DM "I would like to rage."
* TheBigGuy: Grog pretty much lives and breathes this trope.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: Given that he isn't the most mentally fortuitous of the gang, Grog has an unfortunate tendency to be overpowered by enemies that can do this. [[spoiler: Things get really bad when the duergar queen does this and spirits him away.]]
* GentleGiant: Despite everything else about him, Grog has a surprisingly sweet side. After all, he refused to kill a defenseless old gnome, which led to him meeting Pike.
* InLoveWithYourCarnage: More like ''turned on'' by your carnage, as evidenced when he sees Kima use a weapon for the first time.
* LargeHam
* PlatonicLifePartners: Again, with Pike.

* BadassNormal: The only human on the team, and lacks any magical skills.
* GadgeteerGenius: Percy took an interest in mechanics even before the murder of his family. Learning to make and use guns only honed his skills.
* TheGunslinger: While his class is transplanted from another version, he manages to fit right into the world of the game.
* HandCannon: The aptly-named "Bad News." It takes all of Percy's strength not to be knocked off his feet when it fires, and it's been known to turn its victims heads into fine mists.
* OverlyLongName: While his full name has yet to be stated on the show, it was revealed in a Youtube video posted by Ashley Johnson.
* TheQuietOne: The least talkative of the group.
* TrickBullet: Has a few of these, the most-used being his iceshot which is capable of freezing its targets.

* BewaretheNiceOnes: Keyleth is introverted, and generally is the most naïve of the bunch, but she's also apparently one of the more sadistic ones, with the way she kills people.
* NoodleIncident: That time she killed a kid. Before the first streamed episode.

to:

* BewaretheNiceOnes: {{Adorkable}}: Although she hasn't had much opportunity to show it thus far (since most of the campaign has been under tense situations for the group), her intro video describes her as this. The time she tried to masquerade as a dwarf definitely fell into this, though.
* BewareTheNiceOnes:
Keyleth is introverted, and generally is the most naïve of the bunch, but she's also apparently one of the more sadistic ones, with the way she kills people.
* ElementalPowers: Her tribe is the Air Ashari, meaning she has strong [[BlowYouAway wind-based]] powers. She's also demonstrated the ability to use [[DishingOutDirt Stoneshape]], which bends rocks to her will.
* HalfHumanHybrid: Same as the twins, she's a half-elf. Her exact ancestry is unclear, however.
* NeutralGood: Confirmed by a picture of Keyleth's character sheet posted online by Marisha Ray.

episode, too, so all we have is Laura Bailey's reference to this.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: Capable of shifting form into a variety of animals, a standard druid trait. Giant eagles and large cats tend to be her preferred changes.

* TheDitz: Tiberius almost always seems to be the one who pays the least amount of attention to whatever happens to be going on at the time, even in times of high stress.

stress. Given his intelligence, however, he might be more accurately called a GeniusDitz.
* DraconicHumanoid: This is what dragonborn are all about, being humanoids descended from dragons.
* {{Flight}}: A spell effect he uses.
* OddFriendship: Seems to have taken a liking to Clarota, who also wields arcane magic, although the "friendship" part might be a bit one-sided.
* PlayingWithFire: He has flame breath as a dragonborn, and fireballs are one of his go-to combat spells.
* TakenForGranite: [[spoiler: Was petrified by one of the duergar king's basilisks. Has yet to be healed.]]

Added DiffLines:

* CasanovaWannabe: Loves the ladies, though we haven't seen him have much luck outside of, as Grog calls it, "places where you pay for lady favors."
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: While he describes his skills with "fighter a distant third," this bard proves to be anything ''but'' spoony in combat. His greatest achievement may well be [[spoiler: decapitating King Murgal in combat]]
* {{Invisibility}}: One of his bard skills.
* LadykillerInLove: While his ladykilling skills might be in dispute, he's definitely smitten with Pike. He also averts CantActPervertedTowardALoveInterest by a country mile.
* MagicalMusic: As a bard, this is natural. Primarily used for healing.
* TalkingTheMonsterToDeath: This is an actual skill of his, where he can ''insult an enemy to deal damage.'' Even better, this can - and has - killed before.

Added DiffLines:

An illithid who was outcast from his people after developing arcane powers. When they began to be controlled by an outside influence, he managed to develop headgear that blocked out the intruder and barely survived until he was found by Keyleth and Vex. Currently allied with the team as they both have a similar goal.

* BrainFood: As a mind flayer/illithid, this is par for the course. He can also gain the knowledge of those who he feeds on, which has come in handy.
* {{Cthulhumanoid}}: Mind flayers are humanoid with tentacled faces.
* EnemyMine: He intends to free his race from Kvarn's influence, and formed an uneasy alliance with our heroes to do so. As time went on, however, he seems to be fitting in more.
* PsychicPowers: Also a trait of his race, though he also has magical powers which led to him being exiled.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: There's no love lost between him and Kima. [[spoiler: This doesn't stop him from saving her life when she's petrified and about to be hit with magma.]]

Added DiffLines:

A halfling paladin of Bahamut whom Vox Machina had been tasked with locating. While bringing her back safe is their primary quest, it turns out that Kima got herself mixed up in something much bigger...

* {{Badass}}: Is probably a fair bit stronger than the party. Plus, take a look at the tropes below:
* ColdBloodedTorture: Was subjected to this by the duergar. ''Never'' gave in.
* GoodIsNotSoft: She's a holy warrior, with emphasis on "warrior." She still serves Bahamut, who is a very good-oriented deity.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: The party finds her tied to a rack, clearly having been tortured for a long period of time. She's covered in wounds and scars, but she's still alive. And still ''very'' angry.
** She gets a second one once she's freed and healed. She borrows Pike's mace and proceeds to go to town on what's left of her former captor, even though Grog already killed him. Not much is left when she's through.
* FantasticRacism: Does not like illithid, and not at all willing to trust Clarota. A milder example, as she's seen some terrible things committed at the hands of the mind flayers allied with the duergar, and doesn't assume that he's not with them.
* PowerGlows: As a paladin of Bahamut, her eyes and weapon may glow with a silver light in battle or when angered.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: Eventually, the party convinces her to put aside her distrust of Clarota and work together.

Added DiffLines:

An unknown entity who has been working behind the scenes, deep under Kraghammer. Somehow, Kvarn is controlling the illithid and got them to ally with the duergar. Has yet to appear in person, but a vision of him suggests he is a large beastlike being with a single prominent horn.

* BigBad: He's behind everything - the illithid, the duergar plot, and the capture of Kima, making him the BiggerBad of the story as well.
* EldritchAbomination: What little we know of him points toward this.
* TheGhost: Has not physically appeared yet.

Added DiffLines:

* {{Badass}}: Capable of fighting Kima evenly, and fending off other members of the party at the same time.
* BigBad: For the duergar invasion part of the plot.
* GuysSmashGirlsShoot: With his queen. He wields a huge sword, she has magical powers.
* OffWithHisHead: [[spoiler: Meets his end this way, thanks to Scanlan.]]

Like any good TabletopGame/DungeonsAndDragons campaign, the world of WebVideo/CriticalRole is populated by a wealth of varied and intricate characters. And oh, what characters they are.

[[foldercontrol]]

!The Dungeon Master
!!! Played by: Creator/MatthewMercer

Any good tabletop gaming campaign has someone in charge, keeping the game fun while prevent the players from driving everyone off the rails. Voiceover artist and noted OneOfUs Matt Mercer takes the wheel for this particular group.

Aside from providing the story, battles, and worldbuilding for the game, Mercer also takes on the role of every NPC in the game.

* {{Catchphrase}}: "How do you want to do this?" is his when someone has just delivered a decisive blow, and gives them the opportunity to choose how they dispatch their opponent. Saved for tough monsters or bosses, and has become something of a BorrowedCatchphrase for the Geek and Sundry Twitch chat, who chant it as a way of cheering when they think someone is about to get a kill.
* KillerGameMaster and MontyHaul: Both completely averted. Mercer's style of DM-ing can be described as "challenging, but fair."
* ManOfAThousandVoices: By necessity, as he plays ''everyone'' who isn't the party.
* TheGMIsACheatingBastard: Also averted. Mercer plays entirely fairly, and in fact has been known to sometimes roll his dice in full view of the players (the sign of a confident GM who believes in fair play).

* TrueCompanions: Despite their varied origins and motives, they're a solid team.

!!!Played by: Creator/LiamOBrien
-->'''Race:''' Half-elf
-->'''Class:''' Rogue

The group's rogue, a serious and focused half-elf. Vex'ahlia's twin brother, the two were born of the union between an elven noble and a human peasant. After cutting all ties with the cold and unwelcoming elves and learning of their mother's death when a dragon attacked their village, they struck out on their own and eventually joined the party.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Pike Trickfoot]]
!!!Played by: Creator/AshleyJohnson
-->'''Race:''' Gnome
-->'''Class:''' Cleric

Pike came from a long line of gnome thieves and brigands, until her grandfather was sent a divine vision that led him along a different path. Pike became friends with Grog when the goliath went against his herd to protect her grandfather, by then an elderly and helpless gnome, and the two have been best friends since. Pike died in an adventure that was played before the group began streaming, and came back determined not to fail again.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Grog Strongjaw]]
!!!Played by: Creator/TravisWillingham
-->'''Race:''' Goliath
-->'''Class:''' Barbarian

Goliath both in size and race, Grog hasn't got much in brains but plenty in heart. He was exiled and nearly killed when he went against the orders of his herd and protected an innocent old gnome. Cast out by the herd leader, his uncle, Grog was brought back to health by Pike. Eventually, the two joined the rest of Vox Machina on their adventures.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Percy]]
!!!Played by: Taliesin Jaffe
-->'''Race:''' Human
-->'''Class:''' Gunslinger

One of many children in a noble family, Percy (full name Percival Frederickstein von Musel Klossowski de Rolo III) was the sole survivor when his kin were murdered by a mysterious lord and lady who attended their court. Overthrown by the invaders and traumatized by witnessing the death of his sister, Percy was barely aware until a dark spirit of vengeance visited him and gave him the means to create his first gun.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Keyleth of the Air Ashari]]
!!!Played by: Marisha Ray
-->'''Race:''' Half-elf

[[folder:Tiberius Stormwind]]
!!!Played by: Creator/OrionAcaba
-->'''Race:''' Dragonborn (red)
-->'''Class:''' Sorcerer

Brilliant and a little bit pompous, Tiberius proved a magical prodigy at a young age and became a standing member of his city's magic guild by the time he was twenty years old. Intrigued by the discoveries he made in forgotten lore and bored with the tedium of guild life, he arranged to leave on a sanctioned quest under the guise of a diplomatic mission. Despite his eccentricities and being a red dragonborn (a color of dragon usually considered evil), he is generally quite friendly and open-minded.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Scanlan Shorthalt]]
!!!Played by: Creator/SamRiegel
-->'''Race:''' Gnome
-->'''Class:''' Bard

Last but not least (except perhaps in size), the party bard was raised by a single mother and honed his skills with a travelling troupe organized by a half-orc. Considers himself much more of a lover than a fighter, and believes himself a gnomish Casanova, though has since become smitten with Pike. Still, while his ego might be too big for his body, he occasionally proves that great things... well, small packages, you know the deal.
