On the one hand, the "Нарру Warrior" led the doomed fight to make civil rights an official part of the Democratic platform. On the other, Humphrey is the red-baiter who hijacked the Farmer-Labor Party of Minnesota, and whose opposition to the Vietnam War was late at best and opportunistic at worst.\\\
Humphrey began his career as Mayor of Minneapolis in 1945, forming a broad liberal opposition to the Democratic Farmer-Labor Party's far-left Popular Front leadership. Although the DFL would see a pronounced opposition from the former frontists who now held positions within the state's Progressive Party, Humphrey would find himself leading the DFL into a merger with the Progressive party following President Russell's nomination.\\\
The newly-christened Progressive Farmer-Labor party, alongside Humphrey's widespread appeal, would secure Humphrey the Progressive Party's Presidential for nomination in 1964, and, losing the election, into the nor's office in the governor's out the increasingly Party in 1966, blowing out unpopular Minnesota Republican Party in a historic landslide. Though another run for the Presidency was what Humphrey and many others expected, he found himself outmatched by fellow Minnesotan Eugene [=McCarthy=] in the 1968 Progressive primaries. A pro-Vietnam position was unviable for a Progressive candidate, and Humphrey would eventually choose to drop out and support [=McCarthy=]'s pro-peace campaign.\\\
Whatever Humphrey's plans for future politics were, [=McCarthy=]'s assassination and a subsequent military coup did not factor into them. As mass protests against the new government exploded throughout the nation, Humphrey declared that Minnesota would not cooperate with the newly-installed [=McCormack=] administration. Now, as the country descends into further into chaos, many wonder which side of the Happy Warrior will guide his actions the tenacious progressive, or the committed anti-communist?[[/labelnote]]
