* BigBad: [[AmbiguouslyEvil Depending on whether the theory of it having ties to the origin A possible, but still [[AmbiguousSituation never concretely confirmed]], interpretation of the Moon Presence has it behind the Beast Scourge - or at the absolute least ''Yharnam's'' Beast Scourge, and thus is true or not]].the cause of the problems you fight through in the main game. Of course, even if this is true, its motives remain [[BlueAndOrangeMorality utterly inscrutable]] The proof is as follows:
** The other time the Red Moon, associated with the Moon Presence (it does, after all, descend from the red moon when it appears), ever appeared in Yharnam was when Old Yharnam went to hell with uncontrollable Scourge Beasts, giving it a potential causal link.
** A note in Byrgenwerth indicates a sort-of prophecy that when the Red Moon appears, a womb (or possibly several wombs, as the original Japanese is rather ambiguous with plurality) shall be blessed by the Great Ones and, most importantly, 'the line between man and beast will blur', indicating that the Red Moon, and thus the Moon Presence's influence on the Waking World, starts to accelerate the process of transformation ''and'' blurs the line between Dream and Waking World, allowing the Great Ones to impregnate human women.
** It's all but stated that the Red Moon doesn't simply 'show up' when you kill Rom - but rather, ''it was always there''. Like the Amygdalas, it was simply hidden by Rom in order to keep up the masquerade - in reality, under this theory, the Moon Presence has been influencing what you fight since the beginning of the game.
** It's also important to note that the original Great one that the School of Mensis seemed to be intent on summoning by using Mergo as an offer was the Moon Presence itself - the Moon rune is found in Yahar'gul, a note found on the ground calls out to the 'paleblood sky', and so on. Another way to interpet it wanting the Hunter to find Mergo and only allowing the night to end after that is ''not'' to kill Mergo...but rather, kill the Wet Nurse and then snatch Mergo for itself. Meaning that its potential motivation might be the same as all other Great Ones: [[ReplacementGoldfish replacement children]].

* LaserGuidedKarma: Assuming the Brain of Mensis is a fusion of Mensis scholars, their fate is quite a fitting: they kidnapped and did horrible experiments on countless people in order to create an artificial 'Great One', until they themselves were sacrificed (or sacrificed themselves) in order to fuse together into a Great One...and promptly turned into the malformed Brain of Mensis, unable to use their newly obtained power for anything.

Trope was cut/disambiguated due to cleanup

* SpellMyNameWithAnS: InUniverse, Micolash [[MemeticMutation mentions that some call her Kosm]], though that's the only instance in the game where she's called anything but Kos, so for all you know it could just be Micolash being [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} Micolash.]]

Not enough context (ZCE)

* EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas: In as much as you could call a possibly infant EldritchAbomination "bad", but you can periodically hear it cry as you attack [[spoiler:Queen Yharnam in the Chalice Dungeons]], and it will implicitly try to protect her by binding you in place if you do it too much.

Of course, it could just be protecting itself.

* Mythology Gag: It's boss fight is similar to the Royal Rat Vanguard in Dark Souls 2, as a horde of identical-looking enemies but only one of them contributes to the boss health bar.

* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: If you subscribe to the interpretation that the Brain of Mensis is literally composed of the School's members, then they definetly got a brain lined with eyes...Too bad that they didn't get ''anything else'', not even basic mobility.

** Due to the ambiguous syntax, especially in Japanese, it's left unknown if the one who granted the School of Mensis its 'failed brain' was Mergo himself, or if the School made a DealWithTheDevil with the Wet Nurse in exchange for being granted eyes. If it's the latter, then the Wet Nurse definetly kept her part of the bargain... [[BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor by turning most of the students into the weak and stillborn Brain of Mensis]].
