* {{Adorkable}}: He tends to act this way around his human love interests, especially Jane Foster and Roz Solomon.
* AnAxeToGrind: In his youth, he wielded a large battle axe called Jarnbjorn, which was actually used to kill a Celestial. Once he became unworthy of his hammer following the events of Original Sin, the modern Thor began to wield it again.
* ArtificialLimbs: After losing the ability to use his hammer, Thor lost his left arm in a battle with Frost Giants, forcing him to replace it with an Uru-forged arm reminiscent of The Destroyer. Flash-Forwards to centuries later reveal that Old King Thor still has it.
* BadassBeard: For a while, to hide his scars from a fight with Hela.
* BadassBoast: Thor's smack talk skills are legendary.
* BadassCape: His cape is especially notable, because unlike the Distinguished Competition, most heroes in the Marvel Universe lack one.
* BarbarianLongHair: His flowing golden hair, which is one of the key signifiers that differentiate him from his mythological predecessor.
* BattleCry: "For Midgard!" and "For Asgard!" most commonly.
* BeardOfSorrow: He grows a more sorrowful beard when he loses the ability to wield Mjolnir after Original Sin.
* TheBerserker: Thor can enter The Warrior's Madness, which makes his already incredible strength 10 times more powerful, but at the cost of being unable to control himself or tell friend and foe apart.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: When he really cuts loose and gets angry, it's a terrifying sight.
* BigBrotherInstinct: When they were young, Thor was always very protective of Loki, which only helped nurture his complexes that lead him down the path of villainy. When Loki returned to life as Kid!Loki after the Siege of Asgard, this was dialed up to 11 as Thor finally saw a chance to save his brother from becoming a villain. When Thor learned that Loki's evil future self had killed Kid!Loki in secret and had taken control of the body to return to life, he ''lost it'', and even though Loki was trying to change his life and become a hero, Thor intended to bring him back to Asgard and see justice for murdering his baby brother.
* TheBigGuy: In a traditional Avengers line-up, Thor plays this role- he's easily the biggest, strongest gun in the team's arsenal.
* BoisterousBruiser: Thor is loud, proud, and has the strength to back it up.
* BrainsEvilBrawnGood: The good brawn to Loki's evil brains.
* BruiserWithASoftCenter: For all his boisterousness, he shows plenty of emotional vulnerability at times, especially when dealing with his family.
* CainAndAbel: The Abel to Loki's Cain.
* DatingCatwoman: His on-again, off-again relationship with Amora, the Enchantress.
* DropTheHammer: His iconic weapon of choice, the magic hammer Mjolnir.
* DumbMuscle: While Thor isn't actually stupid, he often comes off this way, standing on a team dominated by geniuses like Hank Pym, Tony Stark and T'Challa.
* ElementalPowers: Lighting and Wind, befitting the God of Thunder.
* FlyingBrick: Thor is super strong, incredibly durable, and can fly through the air at incredible speeds thanks to his hammer.
* FunPersonified: A common interpretation of his character presents him this way.
* FriendlyRivalry: His rivalry with the Hulk has grown into this over the years.
* GoodIsNotSoft: And how. Thor shows a great deal of restraint to the criminals of Midgard, because as the mightiest of Asgardian Gods, he could easily tear the whole planet apart if he let loose. Making him angry is not advisable.
* HijackedByJesus: Christian themes and imagery are common with him, and he even quotes the New Testament at times.
* HumanityIsInfectious: Given the choice between Asgard and Midgard, Thor stands with Earth and its people every time.
* HumiliationConga: After Original Sin. Thor loses the ability to use Mjolnir and shames himself in front of the All-Father and all of Asgard, insists he doesn't need it and rushes off to battle only to lose his arm, which a Frost Giant keeps as a trophy, and then discovers that the hammer has found a new host, and she's able to wield it even better than he could. Then, right after, he discovers that his beloved brother he's finally repaired his relationship with wasn't actually the Kid!Loki he thought, and had actually killed Kid!Loki, causing him to vow to bring Loki to justice again and ruining their relationship again. After the time skip, [[spoiler:He finally becomes worthy of wielding Mjolnir again...which ultimately causes him to lose the Hammer of Thorr during his and Hyperion's last stand against the Beyonders, allowing him to die as himself before Secret Wars.]] Thor's had a rough go of it in the modern Marvel Universe.
* LargeHam: One of the largest on a given Avengers team. While many of Marvel's characters have gotten more serious and grounded throughout the years, Thor still speaks like straight out of a 1960's comic, full of bombast and theatrics.
* LeeroyJenkins: Thor is a very capable tactician when he's forced to think things through. Emphasis on forced, because his standard operating procedure is to listen to his emotions and charge into battle, hammer held high screaming in the name of justice before bothering to think things through.
* LightningBruiser: He's not only one of the strongest Avengers, he's one of the fastest as well.
* MagicKnight: An interesting example, in that he doesn't really cast spells and knows little of actual magic, but his weather manipulation is a functional form of magic, in tandem with his warrior ways.
* MayflyDecemberRomance: All of his human love interests are this to him, since he's an immortal Asgardian God.
* MessianicArchetype: Thor often reads less like a depiction of the Norse God and more like a modern version of Jesus Christ with a hammer.
* NiceGuy: Fundamentally, especially in modern times. Thor spends his free time bringing food to starving nations, preparing last meals for sympathetic death row victims, regaling mountain-exiled monks with tales of adventures, and guiding the younger mortals around him with gentle wisdom when he can.
* NoIndoorVoice: It's an Asgardian thing.
* OneManArmy: Thor can take on more foes alone than the entire rest of the team can together.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: When he cuts loose, Thor is easily capable of destroying entire planets.
* PhysicalGod: Sometimes depicted as an advanced alien, sometimes depicted as a literal physical God. It varies by the writer.
* {{Protectorate}}: Has declared Midgard and the people there under his personal protection.
* ProudWarriorRaceGuy: Less so than most traditional Asgardians, but still the most prominent of the Avengers.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: He's a several thousand year old Asgardian.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: He may be the Prince of Asgard, but he's an Avenger first and foremost.
* SiblingYinYang: With Loki, in every meaningful way.
* SleevesAreForWimps: His classic and Marvel Now costumes.
* [[SuperHeroGods Super Hero God]]
* SuperStrength: Thor's strength is so great, that the only time it's up for debate that he's the strongest person in a room at a given time, is if The Hulk is in it too.
* TenMinuteRetirement: When the hammer past to Thunderstrike. Averted when the hammer passed to the current Thor, where he retained membership on The Avengers, only changing his codename to Odinson.
* TokenNonHuman: In modern teams, there's usually plenty of Mutants, Inhumans and Aliens, but a lot of classic line-ups featured Thor as the sole non-human Avenger.
* ThrowingYourSwordAlwaysWorks: Thor's primary tactic in a fight is to throw Mjolnir at his foes.
* WarriorPrince: Crown prince of the warrior culture of Asgard.
* WeatherManipulation: As the God of Thunder.

A hurricane off the coast of Barbados? Mine again. A brace of tornadoes in Kansas? Aye... mine. All that might, all that destructive force, mine to command. Channeled and guided through the mystic might of this hammer, guided right at thee!"
* WellDoneSonGuy: Not as prominent as Loki's, since he did have Odin's favor, but Thor has his own daddy issues he struggles with.
* WhenAllYouHaveIsAHammer: If Thor is confronted with a problem, his response is generally to throw his hammer at it. If things get really tough, he'll whip out his weather powers.
* WhoWantsToLiveForever: He occasionally struggles with the fact that his long lifespan means that all the people he's grown close to in this era on Midgard will age and die long before he does.

* ArmCannon: Several suits have allowed Stark to access varying arm cannons. Most notable, the Bleeding Edge Armor had specialized ports for attachments, including several types of massive blasters and cannons for the arms.
* TheAtoner: For Tony, Iron Man is a chance to redeem himself for a lifetime of selfish cruelty and a lack of accountability in the creation of weapons that slaughtered countless lives.

* TheCasanova: Tony Stark loves women, and women love Tony Stark.
* ChestBlaster: The iconic Unibeam, his chest-mounted super Repulsor. He traditionally only uses it as a finishing move or as a desperate attempt to damage something out of his league, because it drains so much of his power to utilize compared to the weaker, but faster gauntlet Repulsors.
* ChivalrousPervert: Famously the biggest womanizer in the Marvel Universe, yet he's incredibly polite to the women he's chatting up, cares deeply about most of his exes (the Marvel Now relaunch's opening story arc essentially boils don to him wanting to protect the legacy of one of his exes after her life's work is stolen and abused), is VERY protective of his on-again/off-again love interest Pepper, honestly loved (and still loves) Madame Masque, and is always completely supportive of his female teammates, no matter how they dress and pose.
* CrazyPrepared: Tony has a suit for any and every situation. Sometimes several suits for each situation, just in case he loses one. This has caused friction between team members before, who have been less than thrilled to discover that Tony's built a suit designed to take them down in case he ever needs to.
* CreateYourOwnVillain: A recurring theme for Tony. Crimson Dynamo, Titanium Man, Iron Monger, Firepower, The Hammer Twins and Detriot Steel are all his fault to some extent.
* DatingCatwoman: Unsurprisingly, Tony's lecherous habits don't stop at civilians and allies. He still has a history with villain Madame Masque.
* DeadpanSnarker: Tony always had a sarcastic streak, but it didn't become a primary character trait of his until the movies came out.
* DisabilitySuperpower: For the longest time, Stark's early Iron Man suits were basically glorified pacemakers to keep the shrapnel in his chest from reaching his heart.
* {{Fiction500}}: One of the richest men on the planet. Even when he's not an active member of the Avengers, they're usually bankrolled by Stark Industries.
* FlyingBrick: Thanks to his armor.
* FlyingFirepower: Likewise.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Initially, his selfishness, arrogance and poor communication skills rubbed a lot of his teammates the wrong way, but they worked together long enough to earn each other's genuine trust and respect. After Civil War, he's pretty consistently tolerated at best, even by most other pro-registration heroes, and every time he almost salvages his reputation, he does something else to ruin it with the team again.
* FunctionalAddict: Just how close Stark is to diving head first into a bottle is a pretty major part of his modern characterization.
* TheGadfly: Most modern depictions of Stark depict him as trolling for reactions a lot of the time.
* GadgeteerGenius: Stark is one of the premiere tech constructors in the Marvel Universe.
* GoodIsNotNice: Tony Stark is going to save the world. Even if that means racking up a body count, being a dick to everyone he meets, and even [[spoiler:destroying other universes to protect his own as a member of the Illuminati.]]
* GuileHero: Even with his modern Iron Man suits putting his power level among his more powerful peers, Tony still relies on his guile as his first and most useful weapon.
* HeroWithBadPublicity: After Civil War and Secret Invasion, he became known as the man who's leadership lead to the death of Captain America and allowed the Skrull Empire to nearly conquer the Earth.
* HeroesWantRedheads: Pepper Potts, Black Widow and Bethany Cable.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Rhodey, until Time Runs Out, and Captain America, until Civil War.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: He may not always be willing to admit it, but he does care about his teammates and making the world a better place.
* HonestCorporateExecutive: After becoming Iron Man, he turned his company around and became very concerned with morality and making the world a better place, even in his civilian life. He's turned away numerous projects and dangerous employees on moral grounds, at great expense to both his wallet and his well being.
* InsufferableGenius: Despite being one of the smartest members of the Avengers, most of its members find him rather insufferable to be around.
* ItsAllAboutMe: He's gotten better about it, though.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Rude and abrasive, but he genuinely does good.

* LikeASonToMe: This was his relationship with Peter Parker, when he brought him under his tutelage right before the Superhuman Civil War, and using this relationship was how he convinced Peter to unmask as Spider-Man. * NotGoodWithPeople: He just doesn't relate to other people very easily, and it leads to huge communication problems that only widens the gap between himself and his teammates.
* NotSoDifferent: Stark is often just one step removed from the people he's fighting.
* OffTheWagon: Currently, he fell off due to the stress of dealing with Incursions in secret from his Avenger teammates, and proudly embraced it when his personality was inverted and he became the Superior Iron Man after Axis.

* PoweredArmor: The Iron Man suits are among the most famous, if not the prime example, in comic books.
* PowerPalms: His gauntlet mounted Repulsor Blasts, which provide the current page image.
* ReallyGetsAround: It would take less time to name off the women he ''hasn't'' slept with than the ones he has.
* RichIdiotWithNoDayJob: He was this until he became Iron Man. He kept it up as a facade to make the idea that Iron Man was just Stark's bodyguard more believable. Once his identity became public knowledge, he dropped the act.
* ScienceHero: Less so than most other Science Hero Avengers; he's less of a scientist and more of builder, and is generally referred to, not as a scientist, but as an engineer specifically.
* TheTeamBenefactor: Even when he's not an active member, he's usually funding the Avengers.
* TenMinuteRetirement: A couple times, most notably, Tony secretly retired and passed the mantle to Rhodey without actually telling most of his fellow Avengers that they weren't the same person under the armor.
* ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill: Tony's plan of attack? Hit the target with every weapon he has until they stop moving.
* TookALevelInJerkass: During Civil War, and then again when he became the Superior Iron Man following Axis.
* {{Transhuman}}: In order to get stronger to face the escalated threats of more modern Marvel power levels, Tony went through the process to become Transhuman, keeping the Extremis Armor inside the hollows of his bones and becoming a functional cyborg. Taken a step further with the Bleeding Edge armor, which gave an even greater boost in power. This is no longer the case, however, as he's lost both armors.

--> '''Superior Iron Man''': "I'm the most intelligent, capable person on the planet. I'm not '''playing''' God. All this time...I've been playing human."
* TheAlcoholic: He fluctuates between recovering from his alcoholism to falling off the bender. Events like Civil War, Fear Itself and Secret Wars tend to push him back into it.
* ArmCannon: Several suits have allowed Stark to access varying arm cannons. Most notable, the Bleeding Edge Armor had specialized ports
page]] for attachments, including several types of massive blasters and cannons for the arms.
* TheAtoner: For Tony, Iron Man is a chance to redeem himself for a lifetime of selfish cruelty and a lack of accountability in the creation of weapons that slaughtered countless lives.
* BadassBookworm: He's incredibly well studied.
* BadassMustache: His beard may come and go with the artist, but his mustache is eternal.
* BashBrothers: With Captain America and War Machine.
* BroughtDownToBadass: He recently lost the Bleeding Edge armor, his most powerful suit yet, and had to return to
more traditional armor. He's every bit the badass now that he was before in spite of the downgrade.
* TheCasanova: Tony Stark loves women, and women love Tony Stark.
