* CombatPragmatist: Double-teams [[spoiler:Adewale]] with [[spoiler:Haytham Kenway]]. Uses a Puckle Gun to [[spoiler:kill Kesegowaase]]. Murders a group of Assassins individually before they're going to mass on attacking [[spoiler:Benjamin Franklin's house in Paris.]] We also see him shoot an Assassin who's downed in the trailer rather than approach him directly. Shay knows how the game works, and more importantly, how to make it work for ''him.''

* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: A commandant in the French Navy capable of slaughtering an entire deck of British soldiers with sword and gun alone.

* StockholmSyndrome: Shay never quite wraps his head around the fact Colonel Monro and [[spoiler:Haytham Kenway]] are manipulating him. Monro takes care of him, places him with a nice family, and showers him with praise but also manipulates him against his enemies, conceals his identity, and hides the fact [[spoiler:he has the Manuscript]]. Shay ends up thinking Monro and the Grandmaster are his closest friends despite how much they use him.

** He's also one for Edward Kenway. While Edward initially worked for the Templars, he quickly became neutral and later became one of their greatest foes. In contrast, Shay started as an Assassin, but by the epilogue of ''Rogue'', [[spoiler: he has become one of the most feared Templars of his time]].

* KarmaHoudiniWarranty: Ultimately a DownplayedTrope as [[spoiler: unlike Haytham, Shay never suffers any direct consequences for his actions. In fact, he lives into old age training both his son and grandson to become Templars. The only blow he does suffer is [[VideoGame/AssassinsCreedIII Connor]] and [[VideoGame/AssassinsCreedUnity Arno]] completely undermining and subverting his efforts to grant the Templars a stranglehold on Colonial America and France respectively.]]

* {{Foil}}: Monro seems to be designed to be the complete opposite of Achilles when it comes to his relationship with Shay. Achilles is [[ConsummateProfessional cold and distant]], having almost no personal relationship with Shay, and only appearing to him when he has a mission to send Shay out for. Monro by comparison is AFatherToHisMen, quite warm to Shay, and trusts him without fail. [[spoiler: Monro inspires so much loyalty out of Shay that his death is the final push Shay needs to join the Templars.]]

* EvilCounterpart: To Connor. Both started out idealistic only to be exposed to the uglier side of the conflict, both were Achilles's prize students, and both were TheDreaded (Connor was this for the Templars, Shay this for the Assassins) for their role in wiping out the other side. Additionally both were the targets of Haytham's manipulation. Connor saw through it immediately, while Shay never really figured out that Haytham was using him. Also, while both were exposed to the positives and negatives of the two ideologies, Connor stayed with the Assassins because he believed in freedom above all else; Shay cared more about protecting people, which aligned nicely with the Templars' beliefs.

* ColonelBadass: A colonel of the Royal Army who leads from the front and is quite capable in holding his own in personal combat. Of course he's nowhere near the OneManArmy Shay is, but what normal man is, anyway?

* HotScientist: She's pretty, knowledgeable about chemistry, and is smart enough to recreate one of Benjamin Franklin's experiments after a single demonstration.

* AnAxeToGrind:
** Concept art has him wielding a very large axe, and a British soldier even describes him as "a man with a big axe" within the game.
** In the game proper, however, he seems to [[TheGunslinger favor pistols]] at long range, being the one to teach Shay about guns and the final encounter involves him trying to snipe Shay from a distance.

* GetBackHereBoss: Kesegowaase attempts to be one of these. Canonically, Shay TookAThirdOption.
* DualWielding: Dual wields [[AnAxeToGrind two tomahawks.]]

* MeaningfulName: Kesegowaase means "swift" in Algonquin.

* TheSavageIndian: He fits every requirement of the trope to a T. He’s a brutal former First Nations Abenaki/Algonquin mercenary turned Assassin with a violent streak that’s extreme even by Assassin standards and a total bastard on a personal level.

* TheUnfettered: He can be pretty ruthless, as shown when he has British troops massacred and an Oneida village held hostage. The Assassins turn a blind eye to his actions due to not wanting to harm relations between the Brotherhood and the natives.

* FriendlyNeighborhoodGangster: What her job is in New York City. She's managed to bring most of the city's underworld under her control. Subverted in the fact the gangsters under her control are decidedly less than friendly to the common people.

* NiceHat: Most of his non-Assassin or Templar outfits, such as the Frontiersman. More specifically, he has wide brimmed hats, berets and hats befitting a captain of a ship available.

* NiceHat: Has a wide-brimmed one.

* WalkingArmory: Shay, with the skills of an Assassin and the resources of the Templars, [[UpToEleven surpasses every other protagonist in the series here.]] He carries multiple pistols, an old school hand-and-a-half Templar sword, and a prototype Air Rifle, capable of quietly killing from a distance and launching a freaking grenade!

* TheHeavy: The Assassins thought of him as this before he defected since, when he in truth was much smarter than they gave him credit for.

* HiddenDepths: Shay turns out to have been a case of this for the Assassins. His fellow Assassins, even his friend Liam, thought of him as TheHeavy of the group. He was a thuggish street-brawler from New York brought in because of his HeterosexualLifePartners relationship with Liam. Shay proves to be the most talented of the recruits and a great deal more philosophical than all of the rest put together.

* GameplayAndStorySegregation: Shay can kill civilians unlike other protagonists in the series. Oddly enough, he never displays any requirement to do so in game and there's no indications he ever did so.
* GameplayAndStorySegregation: Shay's potential piracy can lean into this. The story more or less treats him like he's a Privateer working in service of the Templars and the English army, but he's still more than able to attack British vessels and even soldiers in the city.

* TheHeavy: The Assassins thought of him as this before he defected, when he in truth was much smarter than they gave him credit for.

* DarthVaderClone: Much like [[VideoGame/AssassinsCreedIII Haytham]], Shay shares quite a few traits with the Dark Lord of the Sith. His story resembles Anakin Skywalker's character arc in ''Film/AttackOfTheClones'' and ''Film/RevengeOfTheSith'': An exceptionally talented warrior who is a member of an ancient organization and fights alongside his brethren in a major conflict but begins to doubt their teachings which leads to him eventually joining their enemies for the greater good. He also has a backstory of losing his mother, wears a black and red costume (which matches the colors of Vader's lightsaber), served as an apprentice to a master that will eventually escape his wrath and become an isolated hermit, killed his former friend and he's responsible for initiating a purge that decimates an entire organization leaving it nearly extinct for years. The difference however is that unlike Vader, Shay remains committed to the Templar cause and never pulls a HeelFaceTurn.
