Root's enthusiastic MachineWorship is a RunningGag, and she claimed to Harold Finch (the Machine's creator) that her own relationship with the Machine was "more intimate". After Root dies the Machine admits to loving her as well. It's notable that Root's sexual preference is for women and the Machine seems to identify itself as a "she".
