** Cloud Strife got hit by this in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII''. As a teenager, he dreamed of joining the elite [=SOLDIER=] unit like his idol, the great warrior Sephiroth. When Cloud finally gets to go on a mission with Sephiroth, finding out that Sephiroth wasn't as noble as Cloud thought he was is the ''least'' of our hero's disappointments.

* In ''VideoGame/UntilDawn'', [[spoiler: Josh]]'s friendships with the others crumble because of [[spoiler: his horrible and traumatic prank on them]] but Sam in particular felt betrayed the most by the former's actions as the two of them had become close the last year and she felt they had genuinely bonded over the loss of Hannah and Beth together.

* ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfHeroesTrailsIntoReverie'' has a portion of the Imperial Army having this reaction towards [[VideoGame/TheLegendOfHeroesTrailsOfColdSteel Rean]] [[TheHero Schwarzer]] due to his status as the national hero and yet decided to strive to end the war when the reason they enlisted to the army was because of him in the first place.

* ''VideoGame/InFamous'': Cole's girlfriend Trish breaks up with him when the Voice of Survival's MaliciousSlander leads her to believe that Cole deliberately set off the Ray Sphere explosion that claimed her sister's life. Sadly, [[spoiler:[[HeelFaceDoorSlam Regime Superman kills him before he can bail]]]]. However, it does inspire another to do so: [[spoiler:Regime Flash]].

* In ''VideoGame/TalesFromTheBorderlands,'' this is the entire crux of Rhys' CharacterDevelopment from start to finish. In episode one he's a Hyperion employee who deeply admires [[BigBad Handsome Jack]], and his present day self says that back then, he wanted to be "just like him." Come episode five, after he's spent time with [[ArtificialIntelligence a hyperrealistic AI of Handsome Jack constructed shortly before his death]] and seen just how vengeful, self-centered, and gleefully violent he really is, Rhys can't believe that he ever once idolized the image of him that he was sold. If you choose to play him a certain way, you can kickstart this process very early, having Rhys be hostile and uncooperative towards Jack from the minute they meet, and have him call Jack out being a "mass-murdering megalomaniac" who committed so many atrocities while he was alive.
