* Manga/MariaHolic is about a sadistic double-faced crossdresser who torments and abuses a perverted misandrist teenager at an all-girls school. It hasn't fared well with many people, especially in the U.S. and other countries due to the homophobic sounding premise, resulting in the translated version being dropped after only a few volumes.

Audience Alienating Premise requires objective proof of a premise (not execution, the premise) leading to failure, ie definitive alienation.

* ''Manga/BurnTheWitch2018'': The biggest problem with the story, is its focus on Balgo, who is a shameless pervert towards Noel. The witch herself is an unlikable IceQueen void of personality or redeeming qualities. Their interactions are just unbearable unfunny cringe to watch unfold.

Gatchaman Crowds got a second season, which, along with lasting 5 volumes, means it found enough success to disqualify despite the backlash. A Girl On The Shore and Koikimo is complaints/bad reviews but nothing suggesting they hurt sales/viewership enough to count.

* ''Anime/GatchamanCrowds'' never became the big hit many were expecting when it aired. The series is a reimagining of the classic ''Anime/ScienceNinjaTeamGatchaman'' with a new group of heroes using video games to help make the world a better place. Gamers weren't interested in the philanthropy concept; while ''Gatchaman'' fans were unhappy with the liberties taken with the source material. It did do well enough to get a second season, but it doesn't have anywhere near as many fans as other shows such as ''Anime/CasshernSins'' or ''Anime/YattermanNight''; and the next adaptation is planned to be a straighter modernization of the classic series as a result.

* The fantasy manga ''Gesellschaft Blume'' has a gruesome premise: TheHero can only defeat the forces of the BigBad [[PowerAtAPrice by killing their own party members and obtaining their levels]]. When both new and old members join his party, [[AnyoneCanDie don't expect them to survive]]. While it did last for five volumes, the majority of readers on both sides of the Pacific shied away quickly and the remaining readers [[TooBleakStoppedCaring mocked it for its extreme edginess]].
* ''Manga/AGirlOnTheShore'' is a depressing story about two 14-year-olds in a graphically depicted sexual relationship. Asano has said in a [[https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature/2016-03-22/interview-inio-asano/.100079 2016 interview]] that he's gotten criticism for depicting sex casually as an everyday part of life, since Japanese readers prefer manga to be clearly divided up by genre that should be visible from a glance at the cover.

* ''Koikimo'' is about a teenage girl who saves an adult {{Salaryman}} who then stalks and harasses her over her protests until she eventually gives in and relents. It is a RomanticComedy. Saying that the reviews [[https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/preview-guide/2021/spring/koikimo/.170963 were not kind]] is a massive understatement.

If it got a successful Kickstarter than enough are the opposite of alienated to disqualify. Other lack required objective proof (like low sales) of audience alienation.

* ''Kodomo no Jikan'' is about a pre-pubescent girl who falls in love with her teacher, and acts overtly sexual to get his attention, which you wouldn't expect to do well in the US. It didn't get a chance to -- it was canceled when the licensing company learned how bookstores and distributors would react: by canceling orders. In much of the Western world, owning something like this could theoretically get you ''thrown in jail''. The US release was also slated to have the audience-alienating ''title'' of ''Nymphet'', which was requested by the author since Creator/SevenSeasEntertainment couldn't use the original [translated] title of "A Child's Time". The series also deals very bluntly with touchy subjects such as incest/WifeHusbandry, sexual development in children, and hitting puberty abnormally early, which probably alienated readers even further. A Kickstarter was later founded and completed to bring the whole series to America regardless of what happened the last time. The result of the Kickstarter, you ask? ''[[http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2016-07-06/kodomo-no-jikan-manga-kickstarter-campaign-ends-with-usd185725/.104004 The most successful graphic novel Kickstarter of all time!]]''

* ''The Lion and the Bride'' stars a high school girl who [[TeacherStudentRomance falls in love with and marries her teacher]]. It isn't quite as problematic as ''Kodomo no Jikan'' [[labelnote:for example...]]though [[SecretRelationship they were secretly an item prior to the beginning of the story]], the teacher marries his student in part because her only living relative passes away in the very first chapter and she has no support system outside of him; he also holds steadfast to his promise to abstain from anything particularly intimate until the girl has graduated (and is also of age) and [[spoiler:eventually calls off the relationship upon noticing that she is developing feelings for a classmate of hers, his son from a previous relationship, and vice versa, citing IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy]][[/labelnote]], but many people who didn't like the {{age gap|Romance}} or the fact that the relationship's between a teacher and a student were turned off.
* The manga series ''Miman Renai'' is a pure tale of a completely non-sexual romance... between a 29-year-old eroge programmer and a 13-year-old girl. Needless to say, many drop the manga before even reading and many others found themselves unable to see this as anything but creepy no matter how "pure" the relationship was.

* ''Manga/RobotXLaserbeam'' attempts to apply the high-stakes and emotion-driven narrative endemic to sports manga...to ''golf'', which is famously one of the slowest paced and least confrontational sports there are. Likewise, the attempt to include special moves in the vein of the author's [[Manga/KurokosBasketball previous work]] came off as harder to stomach due to the change and format, not helped by the use of such elements rapidly becoming a DiscreditedTrope in the 2010's. After it failed to garner an audience outside of the creator's existing fanbase, volume sales dropped to the point that the manga was cancelled a little over a year after it started.

** ''Kiss my Ass'' is a comedy manga about a high school boy suffering from...hemorrhoids, and it's intended for a young adult audience. It's hard to see just who it appeals to--the accurate descriptions of the condition turn off young readers and others who are looking for a comedy, and others find the misfortune of someone suffering from a chronic illness to be more mean-spirited than funny.

* ''Manga/FirstLoveMonster'' seems like your typical shoujo romance with a CastFullOfPrettyBoys...except for the fact that despite appearances, [[YoungerThanTheyLook several of the male characters are actually in elementary school]] and the high school-aged female lead falls in love with one of them even after learning his real age. Unsurprisingly, the anime adaptation flopped in sales because of this.

* ''Anime/FinalFantasyUnlimited''. While the series does thematically adapt some of the main elements, such as summons, the crystal, chaos, and Cid, fans are baffled when the story focused on non-action kids protagonists, despite typically in ''Final Fantasy'', even kids are capable to fight. The angsty caretaker Lisa is even more so, only have defensive kind of magic early on that is unique to the series. For kids, the supposed audience, they're put off by the inappropriate design of some characters, like Lisa, and also the weird imagery of the series thanks to it taking place on a [[EldritchLocation "Wonderland"]]. Action scenes are few and far between, and while there's summons, its generally underused thanks to the uneven pacing, and the anime generally received poorly with the planned sequel (which was adapted into a series of novels and audio plays) being not animated.

* ''Anime/PuraOrePrideOfOrange'' is an ice hockey, SliceOfLife, and IdolGenre mashup. Putting aside that hockey is ''extremely'' niche in Japan, the show has much less in the way of actual hockey action than the premise would suggest (which turned away any pre-existing hockey fans), there are about five minutes of idol performances total across all twelve episodes, and the slice-of-life aspect suffers from the show dedicating time to the other elements. The Blurays flopped by most reports, and the ''[=PuraOre!=]'' mobile game that the anime was made to kickstart lasted a mere eight months before shutting down.

* ''Manga/{{PPPPPP}}'': Manga about music generally tend to be a hard sell because of their focus on music in a soundless medium, but this manga was starkly different from the usual output of ''Magazine/ShonenJump'' and what the magazine's primary audience is used to reading. In a magazine that is known for gag comedies and hot blooded action, ''PPPPPP'' is a slow paced family drama with heavy focus on character exploration. The art, while beautiful in its capacity to create surreal scenes and landscapes, is also quite unusual for shonen manga, with character designs that break from the norm a lot, making it even harder to get interest from the main readership of the magazine. The manga's strong visuals and character writing did earn appreciation among its own small fanbase, but it never managed to attract enough people to leave the very bottom of ''Jump'''s charts. Despite strong critical reception, the manga was ultimately cancelled after its 70th chapter.

There needs to be objective proof for an Audience Alienating Premise, like low sales or ratings.

* ''Anime/VeryPrivateLesson'': It's an OVA about a guy who is constantly getting jailbaited against his will by a 16 year old girl who's mafia boss father forces him to allow her to live with him and serve as her protector, lest he end up sleeping with the fishes. Needless to say, not a lot of people can get past the premise on this one.
