Genesect and the Legend Awakened (known in Japan as [=ExtremeSpeed=] Genesect: Mewtwo Awakens) is the 16th movie entry in the Film/Pokemon movie franchise. It marks the anime debut of the legendary Pokémon Genesect as well as Mewtwo's Mega form introduced in VideoGame/PokemonXAndY. The movie follows Ash, Iris, Cilan, and their Pokémon as they arrive in New Tork City, which is being attacked by the Genesect Army, a group of five Genesect led by a Shiny one known as the Red Genesect. The only one who can stop them is Mewtwo, who notes that the Genesect are made by humans, just like it was.

Despite the CoolVersusAwesome premise, the film is one of the most controversial entries in the series, due to replacing the established Mewtwo character from the first movie and its sequel with a SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute.

The film was released in Japan on July 13th, 2013 and will debut in America on October 19th of the same year.

!! [=ExtremeSpeed=] Genesect: Mewtwo Awakens features examples of the following tropes:
* Alpha Bug: The Red Genesect is an asshole (and extremely violent, to boot) towards anyone who isn't on its side...even when "anyone" includes one of its own kind, like the Douse Drive Genesect.
* BigBad: The Genesect Army, and by extension, the Red Genesect.
* BigDamnHeroes: Mewtwo, at least according to what the trailer shows.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: The Red Genesect can bend the other Genesect to his will and force them to do his bidding. This becomes a recurring plot point with the Douse Drive Genesect, who's pulled a Heel Face Turn and is traveling around with Ash and co.
* CheerfulChild: The Douse Drive Genesect is apparently this...which can come off as kind of odd since it's a scary-looking cyborg bug with a BackpackCannon.
* ColorCodedForYourConvenience: All the Genesect use different colored Drives. Red also shows itself as the leader with its (obviously) different color scheme.
* Distaff Good Counterpart: The Mewtwo in this movie has a female voice, unlike the one in the Kanto movies, and is also more of a straightforward hero rather than a villain turned anti-hero.
* EarlyBirdCameo: Mega Mewtwo and Sylveon.
* [[spoiler: EasilyForgiven: Everyone forgives the Red Genesect (as well as the others) in the end. Never mind that they caused several thousand Pokédollars-worth of damage and endangered all life in the city - apparently saying "Everyone is my friend" is enough for New Tork City to wholeheartedly forgive you, no matter what you did.]]
* FishOutOfTemporalWater: The Genesect Army, who died over 300 million years before their revival by Team Plasma.
* HeelFaceTurn: The Douse Drive Genesect is kind-hearted and befriends Ash early on.
** HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: As a result of Red's mind controlling powers, the Douse Drive Genesect suffers this.
* JapanesePronouns: This Mewtwo uses watashi to refer to itself, and seems to have a feminine persona in contrast with the original Mewtwo's male persona.
* JerkAss: The Red Genesect, apparently. See Alpha Bug above.
* LawOfChromaticSuperiority: The Red Genesect is the Army's leader.
** RedOnesGoFaster: It also happens to be the fastest.
* MultipleChoicePast: Mewtwo's backstory contradicts a bit of what was established in the prologue.
* MythologyGag: When Mewtwo and Red Genesect fly through Times Square counterpart, some video screens show Pokémon Baccer.
* NoCommunitiesWereHarmed: New Tork City is an obvious reference to New York City. Likewise, Pokémon Hills is simlar to Central Park.
* SoundtrackDissonance: In the trailer, Smiling Face (a happy upbeat J-pop song) plays while the Genesect Army attack Mewtwo and destroy New Tork City. Fits that scenario like a glove.
* SuperMode: Mega Mewtwo appears to function as such in the movie.
* TakingTheBullet: leaps to take the combined attack of the Genesect Army aimed at Ash at one point.
* TheresNoPlaceLikeHome: This is the Army's main motivation: however, their home has changed over 300 million years and they come across New Tork City while searching for the landscape they're familiar with.
* TransformingMecha: The Genesect Army, who can turn into a High-Speed Flight Form to achieve flight.
* UniquenessDecay: Prior to this movie, Mewtwo was portrayed as a unique specimen with a unique personality; this movie introduces a second Mewtwo into the anime's canon, and essentially turns Mewtwo from a one-of-a-kind character into a race of two.
* ViewersAreMorons[=/=]ViewersAreGoldfish: An easy (and otherwise strong) defense for the entire Newtwo controversy would be that Pokémon is for a FleetingDemographic of young children...except that the powers that be promoted this movie using the original Mewtwo's movies and specials. And advertised their remastered TV broadcasts to those very same children.
* VocalDissonance: The Douse Drive Genesect telepathically speaks with a little boy's voice that sounds VERY much so like a little girl's. And this is coming from a 4'11" tall cyborg insect with a cannon on its back, red eyes and a permanent SlasherSmile. Made even more jarring when you hear the Genesects' real voices - garbled Dalek-esque noises.
** Mewtwo itself also comes off as this; it's a very tall and intimidating mutant humanoid feline, and thanks to the original Mewtwo the species has been forever associated with a more menacing, male voice. It can be said that its female voice suits Mega Mewtwo better, with it being smaller and more graceful-looking.

Too much YMMV stuff

Despite the CoolVersusAwesome premise, the film has quickly become one of the most controversial entries in the series. Why, you ask? Allow us to do some explaining...

Back in 1999, you may have heard of a little movie called Mewtwo Strikes Back. While not exactly loved by critics, in part due to FourKidsEntertainment's heavily edited dub, it introduced one of the franchise's biggest icons - Mewtwo - to the anime and gave it a deep backstory and consistent story arc. Along with its OVA sequel, Anime/PokemonMewtwoReturns, it covered the story of Mewtwo, from newborn clone to tragically broken villain to AntiHero.

When Mewtwo was announced for this newest movie, many people believed that we would be seeing a continuation of the original Mewtwo's story. However, it soon became clear that this was merely an Expy of the original Mewtwo with a more feminine voice, and no ties to the original. Naturally, this has stirred up a lot of controversy among the fanbase, with the writer's own reaction to the debacle not helping matters.

Other than the entire Mewtwo controversy, it's generally regarded to be on par with most other films in the franchise, with gorgeous animation, a simplistic plot with greater emphasis on action befitting its MerchandiseDriven nature, and some genuine emotional moments.
