Jossed Theories:

Parley has Only One Name.
While the other Medium-in-training is sometimes referred to as Smith and sometimes referred to as Andrew, Parley is always just called Parley. It's possible that she does (or did) have a surname, but she insists on being called by one name so she can be more like her teacher.
  • Alternatively, her full name is Parley Parley.
  • Jossed by page 387; her first name is George.

Jones is the third girl in the photo.
She seems to know Eglamore and Annie's dad well enough to be part of the possee and the colour of hair seems very similar taking into account the bleak colour balance of the photo. The expression of the girl in the would also seem to fit a slightly-happier-once Jones.

Parley's natural abilities revolve around creating chaos.
She could be described as the antithesis of almost every one of Smitty's character traits and it wouldn't be that far removed. Her abilities could be the opposite as well. The reason they don't show is because Smitty is much more in control and indirectly cancelling her gifts.

Other stuff:

Meta4: A bit of discussion cut from the main page:

The Court and Gillitie Wood are balanced opposites.
Er. That sounds vague. And obvious. What this troper, who reads way too much comparative mythology, means is that they each represent opposing concepts. Gunnerkrigg Court embodies:
  • Civilization
  • Technology
  • Winter
  • Humans
  • Order
Gillitie Wood embodies:
  • Nature
  • Magic
  • Summer
  • Nonhumans
  • Chaos
This is basically summarized here. Reynardine/Coyote, Moon/Sun, Tic Toc/Alastair, Fire/Earth, Kat/Annie- and in the middle the Ghost With The Sword and the alchemical symbol representing the bridging of opposites. Symbolism overload.

The biggest oddity here is that there is no obvious light/dark pairing; both appear to be dark. Perhaps one has been corrupted from light to darkness in the past. Or, alternately, the Court is light and the tree-hand was kept in a sunny internal environment to neutralize it.

  • While this troper agrees with most of that analysis, he disagrees with the tech/magic and civilization/nature dichotomies. The Court employs Mediums (and teaches a course on the subject), and Kat's parents are science teachers and magicians, so the Wood hardly has the monopoly on magic. And we have not seen enough of the Wood to conclude that they are without laws and government. This troper thinks the proper dichotomy is Technology (Gunnerkrigg) vs. Nature (Gillitie). Even there, the line is somewhat blurry, when you take into consideration the Court's Cherry Tree, Ysengrin's using Robot 13 for his own ends, and the TicTocs (who seem to be both machine and animal, and are not allied with the Court or the Wood).

Meta4: Much as I appreciate the compliment, this comment (originally under the theory about the motivation behind the events of chapter 14) doesn't really belong on the main page:
  • This is too insanely convoluted not to be true. Wild Mass Guessing at its finest.

Stm177: What's a Bifauxen? It's redshifted although Kat is apparently one.
  • A female Bishounen-looking character. This one thinks she would not count, as the eyes (well, mostly the eyes) give it away, but it is a somewhat subjective trope.

Brickman: Is it ok that I placed my new theory (Jones is a very dedicated medium, nothing more) right underneath the other Jones theories rather than at the way bottom? I think it looks neater there, but it might be missed.
Meta Four: Credit where credit is due: The "Jeanne was a robot" and "Diego is a Donlan" theories came from the user Freederick from the GC forum: here's the original posts.
Haven: Blah, the more I thought about that "Reynardine killed Jeanne" theory, the less I liked it (because of "why would Reynardine lie in that particular manner?", basically). Maybe Sivo did it for some reason. Maybe Reynardine did it and he doesn't remember - or, as such a large creature, went on a rampage and killed her without even realizing it, and never actually met or knew them.
