Paul A: Which of the following is this trope?

  1. Something bad happens to the hero's family immediately after he refuses the call, leading him to accept it after all
  2. Something bad happens to the hero's family specifically, not just as part of a general cataclysm

As it stands, I'm not quite clear on the concept.

Solandra: Er...both? Whichever case, the demise of the family is the final catalyst for the hero's fate-or-enemy-forced acceptance of the Call.

Mister Six: How does Bruce Wayne fit into this? He didn't refuse the call before his parents were killed. In fact, his parents' death was the call. Likewise, Peter Parker didn't exactly refuse the call - the call never occurred to him until uncle Ben died (although I guess that's a borderline case because he did get the powers first and did try to exploit them).

Morgan Wick: Yeah, I say Parker counts. The fact that he didn't figure out what the call (his powers) was saying until it was too late doesn't really change it.

Kilyle: Spiderman is perhaps the most well known example of this trope. His getting superpowers is the call, and his refusal to use them to stop a thief directly lead to Uncle Ben's death. The Batman example does not belong here, since it has nothing to do with the call following you home.

Morgan Wick: Dates back as far as the 1949 classic The Searchers. Is this the one with John Wayne and directed by John Ford that sometimes rankes right up there with films like Schindler's List and It's a Wonderful Life among the greatest films? If so, wasn't that made in 1956?
Fast Eddie: peasantsquestmovie jpg pulled for being way too wide. Try something closer to 250px.
Lale: I don't think Harry Potter counts.
  1. He's never rejected the call.
  2. His parents were killed when he was too young to be aware of the call, so their death did not force him to accept it.
  3. Any losses in his life (ex. Sirius) usually result from his actions, not his lack thereof.

I still wish this one was "The Call Is Coming From Inside Your House".

Tofu: I think it's the awesomest title EVER.
