Chuckg: Took out the Willow entry. The reason she went from zero to the world's most powerful witch in four years is because she was born with more inherent potential for sorcery than anything else in centuries. Pretty much every Buffyverse practitioner of magic learns first by apprenticeship and then by hard knocks, there aren't any mage academies.
KJMackley: I put it back in because this trope has nothing to do with the potential a character has or if there is even a school for what they learn on their own, it is about being pushed to your limit and becoming stronger because of it. The Watchers Council had a ranking system for wicca's that Willow and Tara knew nothing about, meaning they weren't part of any organization. They only knew what they had to learn to survive on the hellmouth. That is the trope.
