Doug S. Machina: Re: Indians/Pakistanis: Will occasionally appear as corner shop owners or doctors.

I think I've seen this role played far more than "occasionally". (Partly because there are quite a lot of Asian doctors and shopkeepers in the UK, I think.) Is it a UK/US difference?

Xander77 "The first image that pops up in your mind upon hearing the word "hero" will be that of a white man, unless you've been really, really sheltered."

Or, you know, born in a place where whites aren't the majority of the population. Which is most of the world, btw. So Yeah...

  • Tell the media that.

Orange Aipom: Srsly?

Xander77: "No wai"?

Shojo Kakumei Gosalyn: The first image that pops up in my mind upon hearing the word "hero" is Hiro Nakamura. Really.

SpiriTsunami: There has got to be some better word for blacks than "African-American". It's symbolic of the typical overinflated American egoism. And this is coming from an American troper. (White, in case you were wondering, though I score minority points as a Jew.)

  • That maybe, but the people using it are usually trying to be polite.
    • While stereotyping all Africans as Black, and all Blacks as American. What about Afro-Caribbean as an alternative?
halfmillennium: Good point, well made. In fact, All Black People Are American is a borderline trope by itself. 'Afro-Caribbean''s what it says on application forms, it's a good option.

Maybe if you're older but hardly in modern times...Can you name any prominent modern heroes (from the 90s/00s) that are white and male? The biggest cartoons were either female, minority or of an ambiguous race. I changed it to fit the later part of Generation Y. —173.68.39.60

(1) I'm sure you're trolling, but to answer your question, John Connor, James Kirk, Wikus van de Merwe, Harry Potter, Sam Witwicky and Wolverine all starred in major films this year. (2) Who mentioned cartoons? When does "were" refer to, since the 2000s are still going on? (3) I'm not as up-to-date on cartoons, but Batman, Anakin Skywalker and Ben Tennyson all have currently-running series. —Document N
