From YKTTW Working Title: Strings Tugging at the Heart

  • hordriss: Vader's death 'was' accompanied by his Leitmotif, but the non-music parts of the soundtrack can still be heard clearly. It 'is' an emotional moment, but the musical device used is simply a dramatic alteration of the arrangement of the melody. A similar example is the rearrangement of the leitmotif used in The Matrix trilogy, when Neo saves Trinity in the first two films. When he fails to save her in the third, the musical theme, which until then had been played using a sweeping full orchestra, plays again with minimal strings and the melody on an oboe. The soundtrack still consists of dialogue, background sounds, and music. This trope is specifically about the entire soundtrack being muted or dropped except for the string music.

  • hordriss: I'm currently reconsidering whether or not the muted soundtrack is necessary for this trope, or whether it should be considered bonus points. Should emotional string motifs be a separate trope with this as a subtrope, or should the whole thing be one trope? Any thoughts? I know I started this trope and provided quite a few edits, but I don't own it, and I want to encourage people to make this page the community's.

  • Aelfwine: I think the muted soundtrack is a bit restrictive.
