Press X To Not Die launched as Press X to Not Die: From YKTTW

Working Title: Press X Not To Die: From YKTTW

Bedinsis: Seriously, why is Press X Not To Die the main title, and Quick Time Event the alternate? One of the phrases is a commonly accepted term for a gameplay mechanic, the other is just one journalist's detractor nickname for the term. I think it should be changed.

Drew: The names for most tropes are not taken from the common terms, but from one incident or name. "Press X To Not Die" captures the frustration many have for the mechanic. In most cases, the button has nothing to do with the action being taken, so it seems less like a quick time event and more like an arbitrary test of reflexes and controller layout knowledge.

Bedinsis: (off topic: nice that someone actually responds on the discussion page:)) Names for tropes are taken from their literary/technical terms where those exist(The Climax,Deus ex Machina), unless their proper terms are too obscure/not really describing what we're going for in the trope description(see Bathos versus Narm). In this case, I think Quick Time Event is an enough commonly used term to motivate not having an invented term for the phenomena (we're trying to have an index over patterns in storytelling media, not invent a dictionary). Regarding the point risen in your last sentence, yes, it's entirely possible that what you do during a quick time event doesn't resemble what you usually do when you e.g. the x-button(I've never actually encountered one). However, the fact that Press X To Not Die match the description of the situation doesn't change the fact that there already exist a commonly used term for the phenomena. Also, that Press X To Not Die "captures the frustration" as you put it only further highlights why Quick Time Event should be the first-hand term: it gives a negative connection to the trope, and we're trying to be somewhat neutral over the tropes (Tropes Are Not Bad).

Cambdoranononononono: Another problem is that people seem to be mistaking this page for Action Commands. I was about to move some until I noticed how many others there were, which killed my work ethic. Quick Time Event might at least encourage people to read through the description to figure out what the trope means, rather than assuming it's in effect any time a button press is important.

Fallen Angel Eyes: I think there definitely needs to be some cleanup done, as we've got a lot of bleedover between Action Commands and this page. I'd suggest putting something like "THIS IS ONLY DURING CUTSCENES PEOPLE" in big, bold letters but I think that may be a bit much. :P Any suggestions on how to go about this? Cleaning the page up will only be a temporary solution, as we need people to actually realize that there's a difference between the two.
