Another example comes with "howlers", bright red mail which must be opened immediately by whoever receives it or really bad things happen. In this case, it's not really much of a plot point; it's a one-off gag meant to show that Ron has really, really ticked off his mother to get her to send one of those to him.

Since I'm pretty sure that the bad thing which happens if you don't open it is that the howler becomes even louder than if you had opened it.

Some Guy: A clarification for Andyzero- Faustian Rebellion in this context would mean a characters rips the contract up and gets whatever the contract-maker promised them without having to fulfill their end. You are right, however, that the contract-maker can and often is screwed over by their own contract in the end.
