Someone needs to put a pic of Gravemind, the king of this trope, here. The guy is formed from the minds of thousands of still thinking, breathing, tortured people.

MCE: Should there by a mention of the difference between a hive mind and a group mind? At least one example (miracle of science webcomic) is a group mind, as each individual is a separate person and can survive without being linked.

I cut three twin examples and put them on Twin Telepathy (except for Samneric, who were already there).

Not looking it up now, but I think there was an interview somewhere where Reynolds said he created the Conjoiners partly to go against the always-evil reputation hive minds tend to have. —Document N

Deleted the following, as it rambled and seemed to have to do a bit more explaining than it should have had to.

  • The Prawns in District 9. Unlike many fictional representations of hive minds, their's is much more realistic as would be found in ants and bees. Inspite of allegly having a queen, leader class, or possibly both, all we are shown in the film are the drones, who appear to be more uninspired, brutish, unintelligent, and overall lacking motivation unlike Christopher Johnson and his son, who may possibly be remnets of the leader class. However, the reason the other prawns may act this way may be simple because they are just as intelligent, if not more so, than humans or even Christopher, but are lacking any initetive to use it properly because of a lack of a leader to tell them what to do, thus explaining why they haven't revolted towards MNU's abuse. The explanation for the appearent lack of a leader class is that they all died out before the much more hardy drones were discovered.

Could someone explain the difference between "Hive Mind" and "Shared Consciousness," and why they are listed separately?
