Working Title: Shadow From The North: From YKTTW

Nerdorama: I've noticed this same thing about the East in fantasy: the original Mordor, almost all of David Eddings's work, etc. Obviously, this is influenced by Europe being regularly invaded from the East by new cultures (Huns, Mongols, and various Turkish groups being the big ones) during the Roman Empire and the Middle Ages. Since we're talking about Medieval EUROPEAN Fantasy...does this deserve to go to YKTTW?

Attilargh: It came up in the YKTTW for this one as well, so I'd say go for it.

Also, for any future editors, please read the page Not A Subversion.

Nerdorama: [huffy]Well, The Place Which Is No More (that island) was some kind of intentional dismissal of this trope, if Not A Subversion.[/huffy] But, the closest thing is a straight aversion, which I guess doesn't really belong in the examples, unless we want to consider Eddings averting a trope as an occasion for hell freezing over.

Johnny E - Oh, this trope should so be called "Lots of Planets Have A North". (Despite the rather staggering Creator Provincialism inherent in the phrase - it's only the north of England, Russell, not of the planet...
