From YKTTW Working Title: Cult Colony

Deleted this: "When Mexico ceded the area to the United States a few years later, the Mormons fought a brief but fairly bloody war with the American authorities over polygamy and other religious issues."

Since it is false. In fact Mormons were recruited for the war against Mexico, so the later "Mormon War" had nothing to do with America gaining the territory, the war happened much later when some corrupt federal judges ran back to Washington DC and claimed the Mormons had burned the courthouse and run them out of town. (In fact the Mormons had not- instead they had just ignored the judges and pretended they didn't exist which really bugged the judges). Buchanan decided to make an example of the Mormons (hoping to intimidate the South) and sent an Army before finding out what had happened. The Mormons then ran off all the army's cattle and stock delaying them so they got trapped by winter, allowing for a peaceful resolution to be found. There was no bloodshed in the actual war. Perhaps the original poster was thinking of the Mountain Meadows Massacre which did occur at the same time, and was related, but involved only civilians on both sides (and possibly Indians).
