Paul A: I figure if we get too many non-costume "conman trading on heroes' reputation" examples, we can spin that off as a separate page. I like You May Have Heard Of Us as a title.

Darci: In Marvel Comics' "The Cat" (1972-1973), a malefactor named Malcolm Donalbain wanted to build an army of super-powered women. Dressed in yellow catsuits, with blue gloves and boots outfitted with retractable steel claws, Donalbain's force would subjugate the entire nation. He funded experiments by University of Chicago Professor Joanne Tumulo, who wanted to allow any woman to totally fulfill her mental and physical potential. When the experimental equipment was ready, he insisted on using his protegee, Shirlee Bryant, as their test subject. Dr. Tumulo had planned on using her lab assistant, Greer Nelson, and only acceded to Donalbain's demands when Greer volunteered to undergo the treatments alongside Shirlee in secret. When Shirlee died in Donalbain's tests of her new abilities, he ordered his henchmen to dynamite Dr. Tumulo's lab. Greer dressed herself in one of the Cat outfits and set out to avenge his betrayal of Shirlee and attack on Dr. Tumulo. Later, in Avengers #144 (Feb 1976), Patsy Walker accompanied the Avengers in a search of Brand Industries on Long Island. (Security at the facility was the responsibility of her estranged husband, Buzz Baxter.) The Beast had promised Patsy, in exchange for preserving his secret identity, to aid her ambition to become a super-heroine. When they happened across what appeared to be one of the old Cat uniforms, Patsy immediately donned it and dubbed herself the Hellcat. Thus, three women (so far) have worn the yellow-and-blue outfits: Shirlee, Greer, and Patsy. Shirlee is dead. Greer and Patsy share the odd quality of using a villain's technology to become super-heroines. (Greer has since gone on to become Tigra, abandoning her two previous identities, BTW.) darci386@yahoo.com

Conversation In The Main Page:

  • Superman #169 (1964) featured a story in which a criminal (who, thanks to Magic Plastic Surgery, actually has Superman's face as well) dressing as Superman to gain access to a top secret prototype.
    • Good thing he didn't try on glasses.
      • You know, the funny thing is, he did. To make his getaway, he disguised himself by changing into a suit and putting on a pair of glasses.

  • .
    • More recently, Damien (Bruce's son with Talia Al Ghul) showed up at Wayne Manor, wearing an close approximation of the current Robin, Tim Drake's costume, although there were notable differences that were easy to spot, a brown cloak instead of a black and yellow cape, for example.
      • Also the fact that Damien is about a foot shorter than Robin and doesn't resemble him physically very much. This was more a case of sibling rivalry gone very, very crazy than an attempt to convince anyone that he was Tim Drake.

  • One of the Superman comics had an issue featuring a country where everyone was required by law to wear a Superman costume.
