Working Title: Complacent Gaming Syndrome: From YKTTW

Tanto: Let's see. We've got "Stop Having Fun" Guys, That Damn Ken, Easy Mode Character, and this. (It's only not in Character Tiers too because I've been vigilant in keeping it out.) Is there any place on this wiki where we're not going to gratuitously bash competitive players? I mean, I know it's not for everyone (it's not for me, even), but god damn. Most games are big enough to accomodate more than one type of player.

Fast Eddie: I'm not seeing the bashing. The article observes that there is a certain type of player. No name-calling or anything else I'd characterize as bashing.

Tanto: However, that "certain type of player" is essentially the same as one who has already been covered elsewhere on the wiki, and in less-than-flattering terms. In my experience, you can't bring up Final Destination or snaking on this wiki without attracting "hur hur, tourneyfags, why don't you play it the way it was supposed to be played?" nonsense.

It may not be openly inflammatory at the moment, but if its companion tropes are any indication, the potential is certainly there. I'm not sure how many of these we need, honestly.

Fast Eddie: Perhaps the complaint is against those articles, then, rather than this one?

Anonymous Mc Cartneyfan: This isn't just about the "Stop Having Fun" Guys type of player, in theory. Fans of the Hyrulian Temple are listed, after all, and apparently that one's not suited to sane tournaments. This could apply to Munchkin or Scrub alike, just so long as it involves one fixed pattern of play. There could be people who play nothing but the curviest Mario Kart paths (likely aren't, but there could be), or people who only play the Joke Character. Keep this trope.

Gizensha: Apparently, Hyrulian Temple isn't suited to tournaments because a fast character can get a KO in, then dodge for the rest of a survival match. (I'm reluctant to say 'quick KO' given that the size of that stage makes it hard to get KO's at less than about 200-300% damage in my experience of it) What's wrong with Stock matches, though, I'll never understand. Anyway - Definitely nothing to do with "Stop Having Fun" Guys, I had a bit of an incident of this trope after discovering the joys of Pichu Only, Tiny Melee, on Pokefloats, with every item but poison mushroom turned off and poison mushroom set to high. Why? Because it was freaking hilarious.

Degraine: This doesn't strike me as a 'bashing competitive players' article at all, save for that last sentence which is really out of tone with the rest of it. It's more about laziness or lack of imagination on the part of players, as exemplified by the two example quotes. Admittedly, it has some crossover with The Scrub, but that article's more about the diametric opposite of the "Stop Having Fun" Guys guy, whereas this one is focused on the phenomenon of uncreative playing of games.

Regiment: Cut from Smash Bros:

because, although true, it's also intentionally misleading (and perilously close to Two Words: Obvious Trope). Naming one easy, random game and one difficult, standardized game and using them as proof that random = easy and standardized = hard is not proof. I could use baseball (random; balls can be hit nearly anywhere, players can misthrow and run at different speeds, etc.) and Tic-Tac-Toe (standardized; players only mark predetermined spaces on a predetermined grid), but that also wouldn't be conclusive proof.

Chad M: Cut the following:

  • Defense Of The Ancients. Ever since this little blip of a map appeared on the Warcraft 3 radar, the Battle.net maplists have been filled almost entirely with nothing but DoTA and their respective clones and versions. That's not to say that it lacks its own merits, as apologists will tell "ladder"-lovers.

This is not an example. Dot A is a DIFFERENT GAME from War3, they just happen to use the same engine. This is literally the same thing as observing that there are people who play Counterstrike but not Team Fortress, and acting as though this is more remarkable than people who play TF 2 but not Halo.

Chad M (at a later date): After thinking about this some I'm inclined to agree with Tanto's first impression, but it's not just trolling competitive players; it appears to be trolling anyone who doesn't play every option in every game, even if some of those options are of a completely different GENRE from what the player wants. Pretend this article is neutral if you want, but most people associate "syndrome" with "disease." I was going to make some more edits to get rid of all the miscategorized and/or ridiculous sentiment from this page until I realized how much of the page I'd be slashing. I mean, look at the kind of comments this is attracting:

"Guns that are easier to use in comparison are regarded as cheap, and guns that are tricker to use effectively are regarded as worthless. Naturally, shooters such as Team Fortress 2 where every weapon and class is useful (and they actually die once or twice) has too many options for them, so it's "dumbed down for casuals". "

Yeah, never mind that most of the people calling TF 2 dumbed down played TFC, which featured all the same classes except those classes had more abilities and were reportedly more evenly balanced.

"And, as in the trope description, Fox (and Falco) in Melee. And Melee itself for some who feel Brawl is too different."

I guess when a new game comes out, you're not allowed to like the old game more. Even if it's a series which is notorious for not even trying to balance its Pv P play but having a dedicated competitive community anyway.

"Street Fighter 3: Chun Li, Ken, Yun."

That's what happens when a game is badly balanced and only has 3 playable characters. Shouldn't this be on the Game-Breaker page?

"The only character in Puzzle Fighter is Ken."

That's what happens when a game is badly balanced and only has 2 playable characters. Shouldn't this be on the Game-Breaker page?

"Marvel vs. Capcom 2's "God Tier": Magneto, Storm, Sentinel and Cable. Most team consist of a pairing of two of these characters and Cyclops, Captain Commando or Psylocke on third just to abuse their assist."

Doesn't "God Tier" imply people who want to win should play those characters? Shouldn't this be on the Game-Breaker page?

I mean, I could go on, but seriously. I guess the only way not to have this "syndrome" is to play every version of every game regardless of whether they're any good or not, play every character or faction regardless of whether they're any good or not, and play every map or mod for all those games regardless of whether they're any good or not. Proposed new page name: Complaining About People Playing Games the Way They Want!

PuppetChaos: Whut.

Also, I changed the image to something lulzy I found on the internet somewhere that I thought would fit better.
