The entry for Hyper-Awareness is completely inaccurate for a couple of reasons. The first one is that this story is not a part of the Jack Ryan Verse, instead it uses an Expy of him in the character of Commander Robert Toland. Secondly, the warning that NATO received about the impending attacks had to do with, as I recall, stirring propaganda using classic Soviet cinema, as well as a traffic accident involving a Spetsnaz officer in West Germany. NATO didn't discover the true reasons behind the invasion until much later.

Admittedly, I no longer own a copy of the book, or I would look up the relevant information and post the correction myself. But I wanted to call attention to it in the proper way.

Silent Hunter: You're entirely correct. Pulled:

  • Hyper-Awareness (Jack Ryan saves the Western World when he examines recent satellite footage of Soviet farmland and notices that the growing fields are being rapidly subdivided. Ryan surmises this is likely happening to accommodate older farmers as if the younger personnel are being made unavailable on short notice. The alarm bells go off when Jack realizes that only reason an entire demographic profile of a population would be diverted that suddenly would be a major military mobilization, which means the Soviet Union is preparing for a major total war against Nato. Obviously, Ryan alerts his superiors and the alliance is at least partially ready for a fight when it comes.)

This might be another book.

PG 556: I can confirm this- the tipping point is when someone mentions a battery shortage, despite the factories running at triple-pace, which they believe points to the Russians gearing up for something (stocking batteries for their tanks, fighter jet starters, navy, etc) Then there is the classic Russian movies (most of which focus on the Germans as the BBEG) While note is made of the farm sub-division (to free up both conscript-able men and fuel reserved for tractors) it's a fairly minor detail comparitively.

Silent Hunter: Great improvement on this by the way.
