Survivalist is an indie open-world sandbox zombie survival game developed by Bob the PR Bot, in which you build up a community of survivors in the apocalypse wastelands. The plot revolves around a sociopath named Joe Wheeler, who was hedge fund manager before the outbreak. He had constructed a secret bunker in the desert, stashed with a years worth of rations and holed up in there as soon as the infection started. The game begins with him running out of supplies and venturing into a nearby town in search for more.
What I like about the game:
The only bug I encountered in the entire game was when two characters got stuck in a loop during conversation, but when I walked away and came back later it stopped.
There is a plot for the game (Which actually makes sense and has engaging characters and events, but I'm not gonna spoil) but most of the quests are optional. You can make choices that impact the story, similar to Telltale's The Walking Dead, and none of the characters have Plot Armour - they can die at anytime from any reason. You even can kill off the tritagonist of the story by letting the zombies bite her to death and the game will just keep on rolling, but this locks out certain side quests and endings.
Survivors you recruit can carry out the tasks you assigned to them on their own while you are away doing more important stuff. They are also capable of fending for themselves.
You can chat with any character you come across that isn't dead or zombified, and they all play a role in their community. Some of them are farmers, some of them are guards and so on. They all have their own personality traits which influence their behavior and what they say during conversation, and they have their own relationships with others which can change over time depending on your actions.
Players can be initially turned off by the music, graphics or mechanics, but once you get used to it it will start growing on you. The game can be hard in the beginning but if you manage to finish the Golden Ending, it's worth it as it delivers a satisfying conclusion to the conflict.
The dev is working on a sequel and I can't wait for the full version to be released.
