I've only started getting into Metroidvania's recently but I've definitely played better ones. Arrowfell isn't bad, it's just... mediocre to adequate depending on the moment.
Gameplay wise it's a pretty simple Metroidvania, and the lack of a map is REALLY annoying when you have to go back to an area with a new ability but you can't remember exactly where that spot you couldn't get past before, only to find a dead end as it turns out you've already been through this part. Combat is alright for the most part, but with how the energy/aura works with you having an energy meter that goes down before you get to your real health you can quickly lose health quickly if a couple enemies at once attack you. The game has "ambush" sections where you enter a room and you can't leave till after you kill a couple waves of enemies. At first they're fun, but later in the game they decide to string up to three ambushes in a row it gets damn irritating. After the credits play it gave me a play time of 5 hours and 37 minutes with a 97% completion rate. I wasn't actually trying to 100% the game but early on I was into deliberately going into the wrong direction to find stuff but stopped about halfway through.
Presentation wise the models are good, with Team RWBY being adorable, the enemies are good (their version of the manticore actually looks pretty cool) and the sprites are good for the most part, though some NPC's like Clover and Penny clearly only have one sprite. The music meets RWBY's usual standards, though for some of the vocal tracks they put the singers through some robotic auto tuner for some reason, it would've been better if they hadn't apparently Caleb Hyles came back for some singing but I couldn't tell. Cutscenes are animated just like the show and wouldn't look out of place there.
Story wise the game isn't setting the world on fire, but it's decently presented and while some twists are kinda obvious it's not bad.
Overall if I had to rate it I'd give it a 6 or 7 out of 10 depending on my mood, I might replay it if some good DLC comes out, but if I need to make room on my Switch Arrowfell is going first. Wait for a nice sale or price drop if you want it.
VideoGame Alright-ish
