At first the basic premise of Purgatory comes off like a typical slasher movie, although considerably darker.
Come the second installment you find yourself completely entangled in a web of conspiracy. The atmosphere is incredibly immersive and chilling. Lost inside a virtually endless complex of massive dark metallic corridors, devoid of any life, yet you still sense a lingering presence of something stalking you from afar. Slowly unraveling the structure's ominous purpose relentlessly drives you forward. From time to time you stumble upon some freaky thing, which hardly resembles anything you've had a chance to see. And there's still the constant unnerving threat of D-033 relentlessly pursuing you.
Gameplay fares a bit worse. At first the mechanics work fine and the pacing is steady, there's a long stretch before the finale, where basically nothing happens. You just stroll on while your latest ally spews endless exposition and basically does everything in your stead. The chases quickly turn from challenging to annoying as the creatures chasing you blatantly cheat and the whole ordeal is painstakingly repetitive. Especially the final chase which is divided into four phases but you can't save in between them, so if you fail, you have to start all over again.
There's one final thing that ruins the experience for me. No matter how much frightening is it meant to be, I simply can't take creatures impervious to anything seriously. That's just going overboard. The protagonists already are close to helpless, most of the time all they can do is flee. The world itself also doesn't seem capable of taking on a massive swarm of murderous abominations, as despite arguably advanced technology, the military is still limited to medieval knights. What do you possibly want the D-033 to take on. The sun? Give me a break.
I'm still curious about how the story is going to unfold further. Even though there are a tad too many endings with only slight differences.
VideoGame Interesting to read, boring to play.
