The plot of the two parter (doing both together, for ease) is that Discord escapes from his stone prison thanks the Elements having changed hooves and the spell imprisoning him having degraded over the centuries. Discord quickly steals the Elements Of Harmony, the only thing capable of defeating him. He tricks the mane cast into going in a nearby maze, where he proceeds to perform Break The Cutie and brainwashing on every last one of them except Twilight. He finally breaks Rainbow Dash, sending her flying to Cloudsdale and allowing him to win the game.
He then allows the group to find the Elements, his manipulations rendering them useless. With her friends jerks and bullying her then the Elements failed to stop Discord, Twilight loses all hope...until Princess Celestia sends back all her letters, reminding her of what she has to fight for. She goes about using a memory spell to do the same thing with her friends. Discord's own over confedience in his manipulations leads him to not see the mane cast as a threat until it's too late and he's sealed away once again.
The first two episodes of season two are amazing, as I've come to expect from this show. The characters are well balanced and fun to watch, the flash animation has gotten much better, and we actually see a side of Princess Celestia we really don't see all that often, that she can fail and be scared, even angry.
But Discord, voiced by John De Lancie, is one of the major pluses of the episodes. He stays funny, but at the same time the things he does are so absolutely terrifying and dispicable, I can't wait for him to get his just desserts. And that's really what a villain is meant to do, be entertaining, but hateable at the same time.
But despite all the good things about it, why do I find it hard to make myself watch it again? I think it's honestly a testiment to this show's effective characters. It makes me care about them so much, seeing the absolutely horrific things Discord does to the characters makes it painful to rewatch the episode. Which is really kind of a positive thing, because it shows how much a well written cast of characters can effect our emotions.
If I had one complaint, it's that the episode honestly feels like it should've been a three parter, there was so much more they could've done with just a little more time. Still, awesome episodes, recommended!
